Lina is our MasterChef TV CelebrityLina Nordström is one of the finalists in the popular Swed-ish TV-show ‘Mästerkock’ which is a competitive real-ity tele vision cooking show based on the original British version of MasterChef.

Most of the locals in Arjeplog are following the program on TV4 that will present the best amateur chef in Sweden in March.

Linda Nordström is 31 years old and she has been fond of cooking for as long as she can remember.

She says that her parents are fantastic and always let her do whatever she wanted in the kitchen at home in Vidsel.

She believes that her freedom to mess around in the kitchen is an important reason why she loves cooking. And her favourite saying is “the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach”.

She also feels that cooking is an art form similar to painting.

The TV show MasterChef is very popular and has been running for years in England. Swedish TV4 started a version of this show last year. Lina’s sisters Louise and Linnea kept nagging Lina to sign up for the show. Finally Lina decided to give it a try and now she is doing very well indeed.

In the first program she won the hearts (via the stomach) of the three male jurors when she presented a dish made of moose calf fillet, mashed almond potatoes and Jerusalem artichokes with Chèvre (goat) cheese and exclusive mush-rooms that she had picked herself.

One of the jurors spontaneously said, ‘This is finalist stuff’.Since then, Lina has passed more hurdles and completed

various tasks in the art of cooking on the way to becoming (maybe) the best amateur chef in Sweden.

About 2000 people were accepted into the competition from the beginning. Lina is one of the fourteen finalists fighting, or rather cooking, for the title. The winner gets 250,000 kronor, a lot of fame and gets to make a cookbook.

Lina is the talk of the town in Arjeplog and in the north of Sweden and everyone is hoping she will win. She is a very popular person, always smiling and happy.

She has also lent her name to the new restaurant opening tonight in Kraja, Linas Kök (Kitchen). How fitting!

Nelly’s – a Café in Arjeplog, at long last!

After several years of strugg ling with bureaucrats and politicians Nelly’s Café is now a reality. It opened last summer and this is the first winter season.

For many years a café has been on top of most people’s wish list for Arjeplog. Whenever we have asked people what they are missing in Arjeplog the reply has been the same: a café.

If the German owners had known about all the struggles they had to go through in order to get all the papers and permits required to build on the market square, they probably would never have come here in the first place.

Nelly’s offers a mixture of German

and Swedish cakes, pastries and cookies as well as special lunches and of course very good coffee.

Lunches in the form of soups, croissants and waffles and most impor-tant of all they serve a large brunch on Sundays with German specialities such as Leberkäse and Bavarian sausages or Weißwürste.

Nelly’s attracts a variety of peopleSome days you can find local pension-ers sitting and discussing world events and local happenings. Sunday Bruch is popular with car testers. Mothers with babies, students, car testers and many others find the time to enjoy ‘fika’ in the tastefully renovated café.

What is ‘Fika’?Fika in Swedish means taking a break from work or other activities and having coffee or tea and a light snack (biscuits, cake or a sandwich) with colleagues, friends or family.

This practice of having fika between meals is central to Swedish life.

Recently, fika has also come to mean simply going to a café (or home) and having something light to drink and eat as opposed to having a full meal.

The word is also used as a noun, referring to the snacks and coffee eaten during fika.

It can also be found in many combined nouns, especially in the word fikabröd (fika bread) which is a collective name for all kinds of biscuits and cakes that are usually eaten during fika.

What is good in Arjeplog?People are very friendly here. The sky is really beautiful, the best in the world!

What is bad in Arjeplog?It is too dark for me. I am used to going home from work when it gets dark, and here it is so dark in the day.It is bad to be so far from my family.

What music you enjoy?Samba music, it makes you want to get up and dance.

What is important in life?Love is important and also to have respect for other people and for other cultures.

Stefan Hallnor prepares ice tracks which you can rent as well as wrecks which can be driven on the ice for fun.

The tax rate on restaurant and cater-ing services has been reduced from 25 percent to 12 percent. The lower rate applies from 1 January 2012.

The reduction does not apply to sales of spirits, wine and beer.

This has resulted in some restau-rants lowering their prices and some keeping the same prices instead of increasing them.

Hornavan Hotell has lowered the price of their daily lunch special from 90 kr to 85 kr.

Reduced VAT for Restaurants Doctor on Call at Night?

In the first issue of The Arjeplog Times, we wrote about the proposal of the Norrbotten county civil servants to save money by not having doctors on call at night and on weekends. The reaction in Arjeplog has been very strong and everyone is outraged by the decision.

Now there is a glimmer of hope that this suggestion might be reversed. Thanks to all the protests, the politicians will take up the matter for discussion during the month of March. One doctor told me today that he may have to climb the chimney of the hospital in order to get a reaction!

Fresh Start in the New Year

How wonderful with a new year! I think that every chance you get to have a fresh start in

life, is good. For me, this tends to happen after the summer holidays and when the bells ring in the New Year. “Now I will do more physical training. Now my life will become more structured. Now I will finally get better at handling my setbacks - I’m doing my job as well as I can and who could ask for more?”

According to the Swedish system of income-taxes, the amount of money the municipality gets from

the state is based on the number of people living in the municipality. Therefore, we need more inhabitants in Arjeplog. At present, we are not able to carry on as usual because we do not have the money and for 2012 we have been forced to make large cuts. Our revenues are also affected by how well Europe and the world are doing and we all know about the financial turmoil in Europe. The fact that we have less money at our disposal will be seen, for example, in the maintenance of streets and roads and lawn-mowing in summer. We simply will have to ignore some tasks that we really would like to do. At the same time, however, we will continue working for the development of the munici-pality. We, who live here, have an amazing life and do not really lack anything.

Scientists believe that in the future people will be travelling more and technology will continue to

offer more opportunities to be able to work from anywhere. People will be working in “the business of thinking” and looking for the extraordinary. At the same time a feeling of common identity plus being able to choose where one wants to live, will become more important. These ideas are good for a place like Arjeplog as we live in a safe environment where we can, if we want, eat lunch sitting on a reindeer skin in the snow - to take an example from my own life. That to me is quality of life and I am convinced that a lot of people want the same.

As for myself, I’m going to try and devote the weekend to skiing, weather permitting. And

maybe a cup of coffee with family and friends. Then I will go back to work on Monday full of energy. And I hope to do that all through 2012 - because that is what I promised myself on New Year’s Eve.

Home: Arjeplog since 2002 when I came here as a BST student. I gew up in Borlänge, middle of Sweden.

Occupation: I run my own business in the car rental business for Sixt in Arjeplog and Arvidsjaur.

Favourite food: Fillet of beef and I also love my grand-mother’s husmanskost which is classical every-day Swedish dishes with local ingredients.

Dream car: I have always been interested in cars and from when I was a child I wanted a Ferrari. But right now I think a black Porsche Panamera is my dream car. If I only think about myself, my dream car would be a Koenigsegg CCXR.

What’s good in Arjeplog?The car testing industry is good, it gives lots of possibilities and work opportunities, it brings light and life in the darkness and cold.

I like the Nature here and there is less stress than in larger places. I also like the mentality of the people in the north.

There is a familiar feeling in Arjeplog in general and in particular in the Pentecostal community to which I belong, that is based at Hotell Lyktan.

What’s bad in Arjeplog?The long distances to other places, for example to Borlänge where I have family.

What music do you listen to?All kinds of the latest popular music.

What’s important in life? My family, of course.My Christian faith is important to me and gives me peace and stability. I believe in the power of prayer and my relationship with God is important.

Spare-time activities: I like travelling, sports, snow-mobiling and spending time with friends and family.

Oskar Stålnacke came to Arjeplog to study the BST (BilSystemTeknik) programme at the secondary high school.

He has always been interested in cars and during his student days, he spent a month doing work placement at Jaguar in England, which he enjoyed very much.

After his high school studies, he went to Kenya for six months and worked as a volunteer with street children.

On his return to Sweden, he did some Bible studies and then when

he married Rebecca they went to Thailand for one and a half years as volunteers and missionaries.

Then they decided to settle down in Arjeplog and bought a house. Oskar has had a variety of jobs such as test driving cars and marketing the BST program to future students in the whole of Sweden.

Sixt Car RentalLast year he started his own business and decided to work with Sixt Car Rental in both Arjeplog and at Arvid s-jaur Airport.

Sixt’s business idea is to offer premium cars at standard prices and Oskar hopes that his car rental business will do well here, especially during the car testing season.

There has often been a shortage of cars for rent during the season and now he hopes his business will alleviate the situation.

He offers high quality cars and good personal service and the cars can be fetched and dropped in Arjeplog and at the airport in Arvidsjaur.

Oskar is also working together with a branch of Sixt in Luleå.

Ida-Marie Westerlund and her Dutch boyfriend Guido Van Der Berg started the power generator when there was a power cut.

What do you do when it is minus 30 and there is a power failure? The people in the villages west of Arjeplog know. They have a lot of experience in surviving power outages.

Last week, when it was about - 30°C there was a power failure in a few villages west of Arjeplog.

At those temperatures, it only takes a few hours before it is minus degrees indoors, if you do not have backup heating systems.

There are a number of strategies that people use to survive and to keep their houses from freezing.

Ida-Marie Westerlund is 21 and lives with her boyfriend, Guido Van Den Berg in Jutis, also called Moose Village. They experienced the power outage last week.

Surviving Power Cuts in Freezing WeatherShe said that it was not so bad because they started up their portable power plant to get electricity. They also have an old kitchen stove that they use with wood. She said that it was pretty cool inside, but they managed to keep warm. It was no big deal.

People survive because they are prepared for problems and don’t just expect things to work all the time.

The electricity company admits that previously these villages suffered many power cuts. Two years ago they installed a new transformer which has worked very well until the cold spell last week. Suddenly it broke down and it took several hours for it to be fixed.

The people in the villages are annoy -ed when there is a power failure but they are prepared. They often build houses like in the olden days, before there was electricity. For example, if

you have wider pipes in the central heating system, it will work without an electric pump.

The houses are also well insulated and most people have a gas or wood heater stowed away for a cold day.

Today, Friday January 20, Linas Kök (Kitchen) will open and once again Kraja will be a place to enjoy Friday nights.

In July 2008, there was a fire at Kraja and when it was re-built it became less casual and cosy than before. People felt that it had lost a bit of its soul.

Lina Nordström, the new Market-ing Event & Concept Manager for Silverhatten and Kraja said that they are changing the interior design of the restaurant and pub and hope it will be warmer and more inviting.

Kraja used to be a place where locals and car testers could meet informally on a Friday night and many people were upset when the music evenings were no more.

Lina said that they listened to what people have had to say and will now be serving buffet dinners and are arranging free pub evenings with live music. This season the local blues and rock group 'Painters' will be the house band and other musicians, including the popular singer Stina Laisfeldt, will be performing.

Other news from Kraja is that the restaurant will now be called Lina's Kök (kitchen). She agreed to lend her name to the restaurant and together with Alexander Sundkvist, the head chef, they have planned the new menu.

We are sure both locals and testers will be happy that Kraja once again will be a nice place to be on Fridays.

Positive Changes at Kraja

Lina is Here to StayLina Nordström came to Arjeplog in 2005 to work for IceMakers where she stayed for three winter seasons.

One day Janne Edwardsson (the boss of Silverhatten/Kraja) dialled the wrong number and she answered. Instead of hanging up he offered her a full time job organising events and bookings. She accepted the offer and worked there for two years.

Then she felt like doing something different and applied for an art course. Once again things happened that changed her life. She saw an advert for a bank job here, sent in an application for fun and got the job. She loved working at the bank, the hours were good and her colleagues fantastic.

Then, once again Lina was contacted by Janne Edwardsson, this time it was not a wrong number, he wanted Lina to come back to Kraja/Hatten.

She said she refused at first but Janne did not give up and after a month and a half she decided to accept the job. “I am happy wherever I work and I love Arjeplog”, she said with a beaming smile. Lina smiles a lot and has a lot to smile about.
