40 years of car testing in Arjeplog. 40 million in turnover and 40 employees. Icemakers turns forty this year and they are very closely linked to the history of car testing in Arjeplog. Today the company has a turnover of nearly forty million kronor and guess how many people work for the companies? Around 40.

Th e offi cial start of car testing in Arjeplog was in 1973. Th is was the year that BOSCH came here with three people and three cars. Th eir purpose was to fi nd good testing conditions for the newly invented lock-free brakes.

Th e pioneers met some locals who can be considered responsible for the fact that today, Arjeplog is the largest winter test centre in the world.

First of all, they met the late Harold Tallfeldt, who had just built a hotel called Silverhatten on Öberget Moun-tain, overlooking the town of Arjeplog.

The traditional winter market, also known as the Lappish market, dates back to 1640 or maybe even earlier. The market has changed in many ways but many things are still the same.

In the beginning the market was the place and time of year when people traded what they had hunted and fi shed during the winter months for necessities such as salt, sugar, fl our and, later on, coff ee.

Th e weekend began when the Saami arrived on sledges pulled by reindeer. On Th ursday people met their friends and drank schnaps. Friday and Satur-day were spent shopping and bartering.

Many took the opportunity to go to the doctor, to get married and to go to court while they were in town. On Sunday morning, church services were held as well as burials and christenings.

Nowadays, it is a open-air market with a variety of articles for sale: everything from local food-stuff s, Saami and local handicraft and clothes to machinery, jewellery, sweets and knick-knacks from all over the world.

Th e market fulfi lled a social need and family and friends spent the weekend together talking, eating, drinking, doing business and having fun.

During the market weekend, the streets in the centre of town will be closed to traffi c from Th ursday afternoon until Sunday at 20.00. Drott ning gatan becomes a two-way street and should only be used by people who live there and Konsum Coop customers. Most of Storgatan and the streets by the market square will be closed to traffi c.

Today, the market weekend is often a time when those who have left Arjeplog come home for a visit. It also attracts visitors from near and far.

Th ere are many things to buy, exhibitions to see and entertainment, pubs and dances at night. Th ere are many diff erent foods to taste and to buy. Many of the restaurants off er special meals and are open late.

Most of the shops are also open on Saturday and Sunday, have special off ers and some also serve coff ee, etc.

Present car: I think it is important to have a reliable car that gets me where I want to go. I have a VW Tiguan (with a BorgWarner clutch), clear blue colour.

Spare time activities: I spend time with my family. My children play a lot of team handball and a lot of our spare time is spent around this sport and all the practical details involved. I do zumba and go running. I also like stand-up comedy and enjoy concerts. I read a lot and like to work in my garden. If and when I get more time, I would like to study psychology. I think it is important to be able to understand people, especially in my line of work.

What is good in Arjeplog?I usually come to Arjeplog one week every winter season, mainly to meet our customers.

It is a long journey but when I get here I feel the tranquility and quietness. It is like being in a bubble and it is very conducive to working well. It feels like being in another world, everyone is relaxed and we can concentrate on our work and really be focussed.Th e nature is wonderful and so is the scenery - it is beautiful wherever you look.

What is bad in Arjeplog?Nothing at all, we enjoy the good service and everything works very well for us here.

What music you enjoy?Mostly the music that my children like, such as Timbuktu, Stiftelsen (a Swedish pop-rock band).I also enjoy listening to classical music.

What is important in life?It is important to make active choices in one’s life in order to be happy. And to fi nd a balance when it comes to work, family and spare time.

The story of Haldex becoming giants in 4x4 systems has certain similarities with the story of Apple computers. It all started when former rally driver Sigge Johansson invented a crude but smart system for a four-wheel drive. Some engineers from Haldex, then a Swedish company producing brakes, saw his prototype and really believed in its potential.

“We fooled the board saying that we wanted to develop a new brake system and got money for that”, admits CEO of BorgWarner, Charlotte Samuelsson and adds laughingly that this could never happen today.

Th ere is no mistaking her pride as Charlotte tells the story of the Haldex 4x4 system. A handful of dedicated engineers, including herself, put their skills and energies into the project

and even though it was tough in the beginning, it became a success.

During the fi rst year of production, in 1998, they were 30 employees in total and they made about 30,000 systems for VW. Today there are 430 employees and they produce close to a million units per year.

In 2011 BorgWarner TorqueTrans-ferSystems Europé bought the system from Haldex.

Some people have wondered when and why the church bells ring.

Ringing of the Church Bells

According to Reverend Anders Mattson, the vicar of the parish of Arjeplog, church bells used to be a way of calling people to church services. Th ere were no clocks so by ring-ing the bells three times, people knew when to come to the church. Th e fi rst ringing was one hour before the appointed time, the second 30 minutes before and the third was at the start of the services. Th ere were often one or more worship services on Sundays as well as meetings on weekdays and the only way to call the people to church was by ringing the bells.

Th e oldest bell is the small one, which was a gift from Queen Kristina in 1648, seven years after the church was built. Th e other two bells were from a later stage, during the restoration in the late 1800’s.

Anders explained that in Arjeplog, they ring the bells on Sundays at 10.00, 10.30 and again at 11.00.

On Saturdays, they ring them at 18.00 because, according to biblical timeline, that was the start of Sunday.

During Catholic times the ringing of the bells was also a way of sanctifying and blessing the land, the people and the time.

Th e smallest and oldest bell is also rung every hour on the hour to tell the time and once every half-hour.

Reverend Mattson said that when the Russian priest, Father David visited Arjeplog, he was very pleased to see that there are three bells because, he said, “Th e chiming of the bells is good for all people, both living and dead”.

Th e chiming of church bells have played a major role in folklore and superstition and have always been regarded as a remedy for evil and the ‘evil one’.

Th ere are three bells in the church tower in Arjeplog. Th e biggest one was cast in metal in Stockholm 1898 by Johan A Bäckman & Co and donated to Arjeplog by a few forestry companies.

Th e clockwork that regulates the church bells was built by A Linderoth Co in Stockholm in 1947.

Marital Status: Single.

Home: Arjeplog, at the moment. I have lived here for one year. I grew up in Arvidsjaur and have also lived in Slagnäs. I spend a lot of time at my parents’ place in Gasa, a little village 50 km south of Arjeplog towards Slagnäs.

Company: I am employed by Arjeplogs Kommun (municipality). My offi ce is in the same place as Destination Arctic Circle in central Arjeplog.

Right now, I am the ‘Market General’ and I am responsible for arranging and organizing everything that has to do with the winter market.

From April I will continue working for the kommun in order to develop activities, events and entertainment.

Favourite food: Reindeer meat, every part of the animal except the liver. My family are reindeer herders and I was brought up on reindeer meat.

Dream car: Ford Mustang, black.

Present car: I love driving. I have 3 cars:Fiat 127 Special from 1976, a

veteran car that is my toy.I have a VW Passat which is a stable

car with the best road holding.

I also have a Ford Fiesta from 1985, a spare car when the Passat is being repaired (like now).

Spare-time activities: I love driving my car all over the place and I like to spend time with my friends.

My hobby and my heritage is to work with reindeer. I love to be in the forest with the reindeer, doing whatever needs to be done.

I help my father with the reindeer in the winter grazing pastures and I help my mother Lotta at Båtsuoj Saami Centre in Gasa.

I spend time with my dogs and am training the one to compete in elite obedience. I hope to partake in the Obedience Trial Championships with ‘Van’ who is a Working Kelpie. Th is project is in progress and we still have a lot of work to do.

My other dog, ‘Mint’, is an Austral-ian Shepherd, a good herding dog, who works with the reindeer.

What’s good in Arjeplog?It is easy to get to know people and there is a sense of community here.I like the closeness to Nature.

What’s bad in Arjeplog?It is so un-central. Even Arvidsjaur is more central and closer to everything. Th ere are not so many shops and for example you cannot buy electronic things such as mobile phones. I could not even get a charger for my mobile phone in Arjeplog.

What music do you listen to?All kinds of music except dance band music. I like hip hop and dubstep, a genre of electronic dance music.

What’s important in life? To have fun is important.

To reach the goals you set for yourself, to be satisfi ed with yourself and your achievements.

My dogs are important to me as is my Saami heritage.

Th en they met some people who ran the local company called Turistfl yg. Two of the owners were Per-Axel Anders-son and David Sundström and they helped these fi rst car testers to prepare a small test track on the landing fi eld that was on Lake Hornavan.

David and Pelle soon realised that this could become a new line of business and made every eff ort to help the German engineers with anything they wanted.

After some time, Pelle-David, as they were sometimes called, started a company called Andersson & Sundström, with the sole purpose of servicing car testers. Th e entre-preneurs used all their skills and creativity to develop this new industry. Th ey each had a son and Stefan Andersson and Lars Sundström were introduced into the business and gradually worked more and more with the car testers.

Each year the winter testing industry grew and so did An-dersson and Sundström. Th ey acquired land and industrial buildings to provide everything the German testers needed. In the beginning there were mostly German companies testing here and the locals called every foreign person, who came here to test, German, regardless of their origin.

Porsche, BMW, Mercedes and VW eventually built or rented their own facilities and Andersson & Sundström started another company called Icemakers. Lars and Stefan took over the company from their ageing fathers and ran it together until 2001 when Stefan Andersson sold his share of the company, because of poor health.

Today Icemakers is is made up of three companies, the original company that is owned by Lars Sundström, Icemakers Facilities which is also owned by Sundström, and Icemakers Test AB that is primarily run by a relatively new partner, Michael Lindeman from Arvidsjaur.

Lars explained that this last company takes care of all their new customers, like Conti/Teves in Arvidsjaur which they took over from Stig Holmgren who tragically drowned while preparing test tracks in December 2011.

Today Icemakers have many customers from all over the world. Th ey provide test tracks on several lakes as well as all kinds of services and buildings for offi ces, workshops and the like.

Lars says that one big diff erence now is the level of safety for customers and employees. Today Icemakers (as well as

the other companies) have a specially developed ice radar that tells them exactly how thick the ice is.

“Another thing that has changed over the years”, says Lars, “is the intensity of the work. Today I barely have time to have a beer with my customers. Everybody is working all the time”.

What about the future?Lars believes that in the future there will be more companies coming to Arjeplog to show their products because it is here they fi nd their customers. For this reason, more hotel accommodation and hotels with even higher standard including suites are needed.

Sundström sees his 18-year-old son Josef taking over Icemakers one day. In the near future, however, they will be celebrating with cakes for their clients and their employees. After the winter season, Lars says they will fi nd a way to celebrate their 40th birthday in style.
