Welcome to New Knowledge Adventures Treasure Valley (NKA-TV)!

Founded by volunteers over a decade ago at Idaho State University in Pocatello, New Knowledge Adventures has grown into a vibrant, volunteer-driven organization dedicated to meeting the needs of adult learners 50 years or better who want to continue the joy of learning.

There are no grades or tests in NKA-TV. Learners from all backgrounds and levels of education are welcome — all you need is an inquiring mind, an adventurous spirit, and the belief that learning and discovery are lifelong pursuits.

We greatly appreciate the contributions of our partners at Idaho State University-Meridian, the Treasure Valley YMCA, and AARP Idaho. But this organization wouldn’t run without its volunteers. We’ve been lucky enough to tap into the great wealth of experience and talent in our community, and our volunteer leaders have worked hard to bring you a huge array of offerings and activities. They’ve worked diligently to select classes, recruit instructors, manage classes — even create this catalog.

Our volunteers also govern NKA-TV through the board of directors. Our board includes:Cathy McDougall – Board Chair, AARP RepresentativeDennis Fetzer – PresidentKaren Walsh – Secretary, Idaho State University RepresentativeJane Hardison – Treasurer, Treasure Valley Family YMCADr. Patricia Flanigan – Member at LargePeggy Munson – Member at LargeValerie Platt – Member at Large

You, the people who take our classes, own this organization. As demand for NKA-TV grows, we’re working diligently to make the experience even better for you. We’re addressing waiting lists by expanding class sizes, offering new sections, filling in for cancellations, and repeating classes the next semester. You can learn more about the signup process, and any questions you may have, on our FAQs page.

We urge you to become more actively involved in NKA-TV by attending classes, teaching, recommending courses, spreading the word about the program to friends and family, or offering to serve on the volunteer curriculum committee.

Just like you, we’re always looking for ways to improve. If you have a suggestion, please email [email protected].

Enjoy your New Knowledge Adventure!

Sincerely,

Dennis Fetzer

FAQ

sHow do I sign up for a class? You’ll find a class index and calendar at the back of this catalog. Check off the classes you want to take, then sign up for them, PUT THEM ON YOUR CALENDAR and you’re done. Sign up by calling, or registering online (mail-in registration is not available this year). Registration begins February 21.

What are the class fees for? Class fees cover all supplemental expenses (materials, rental, admissions, etc.) associated with the class. Fees are non-refundable. If a spot opens on the waitlist, the class fee is payable in cash at the beginning of class.

How many classes are available? For $35, you’ll get access to unlimited classes — and you can choose from more than 80 class sections! Classes reach capacity quickly. Don’t put off signing up.

The class I want to take is full. Is there a waitlist? If the class you sign up for is full, you will be added to a waitlist. We will do our best to accommodate unexpectedly large enrollments by expanding class size, scheduling additional classes, and replacing cancellations with waitlisted members.

Is it possible that my class might change times, dates, or locations? Yes. We might need to reschedule or move classes for a variety of reasons, such as instructor illness or last-minute venue complications. If that happens, we’ll be sure to call you beforehand to alert you.

What if I can’t make a class? If you’re unsure about whether you’ll be able to attend a class, don’t sign up — you could be taking the spot of someone who really wants to attend. Wait until your schedule is clear. If you need to drop out for any reason, let us know as soon as possible so another person from the wait list can take your place. Call or text 208-899-1226.

Will parking be available?Free parking will be available for most classes, but please check with special venues and plan accordingly. Parking is free at all YMCA locations and ISU-Meridian, on Saturday only. At AARP Idaho, parking is free up to two hours in the visitor lot. If the visitor lot is full, ample paid street/lot parking is available.

How can I tell if I’m supposed to attend all the classes listed or just one? Sequential classes — meaning classes that you have to take in order — are listed like this: March 16, 18, 20

Sequential classes are also marked by this icon:

Classes that are not sequential — meaning you can choose which date you’d like to attend — are listed like this: March 16March 18March 20
