How Will You React? A Simple Approach to Transfusion Reactions
D. Joe Chaffin, MD, FASCP
1.5 CME/CMLE Credits
Thursday, September 15 | 3:00 PM – 4:30 PM | Islander EI
This session will primarily serve as a topical, in-depth resident-level review of transfusion reactions. Dr. Chaffin has helped prepare pathology residents for board examinations for over 20 years, and he brings his unique, lighthearted approach to this review of details of the 2016 National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) classification of transfusion reactions. First, we will discuss a simple and practical strategy that allows rapid initial characterization of transfusion reactions by evaluation of a single vital sign. Attendees will then learn practical and memorable details about the recognition, management, and prevention of the twelve reactions detailed by NHSN. This discussion will serve as a useful review for standardized examinations, as well as a practical framework for future or current practice. This session will also include a brief look at the past, present, and future of Dr. Chaffin’s award-winning transfusion medicine educational site, ‘Blood Bank Guy’ (bbguy.org)

Lynch Screening in the Female Genital Tract: Where Are We Now and Where Are We Headed?
Teri A. Longacre, MD, FASCP
1.5 CME/CMLE Credits
Friday, September 16 | 2:00 PM – 3:30 PM | Islander EI
Lynch syndrome is responsible for approximately 5% of endometrial cancers and 1% of ovarian cancers. The molecular basis for Lynch syndrome is a heritable functional deficiency in the DNA mismatch repair system, typically due to a germline mutation. This presentation discusses the rationales and relative merits of current Lynch syndrome screening tests for endometrial and ovarian cancers and provides attendees with an informed algorithmic approach to universal Lynch syndrome testing in gynecologic cancers. Pitfalls in test interpretation and strategies to resolve discordant test results are presented. The potential role for next-generation sequencing panels in future screening efforts is also discussed.
Session Timetable
2:00 PM – 2:15 PM Awards Presentation
2:15 PM – 3:30 PM Lecture

Wednesday, September 14 | 1:00 PM – 2:30 PM | South Pacific D
There are many complexities associated with this disease the multispecialty team must address as a clinical care unit. They include obtaining adequate bone marrow specimens, identification and classification of MDS, the comorbidity rate of MDS patients and the decision-making process for treatment. To address the educational gaps associated with these complexities, the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) and the American Society of Hematology (ASH) have designed a comprehensive MDS-directed educational curriculum that features a live summit event designed by world-class subject matter experts. This curriculum also includes pre-learning activities including articles, CheckPath Case Studies, and Multimedia Case Studies. Hosted by American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Society of Hematology (ASH), and The France Foundation, the goal of this summit is to improve performance diagnosis and treatment of MDS patients. Participants will actively engage in two multidisciplinary, interactive case-based tumor board discussions.

Genomic Testing: What Pathologists Need to Know
Richard Haspel, MD, PhD, FASCP and Laura Tafe, MD, FASCP
1.5 CME/CMLE, 1.5 SAM Credits
Friday, September 16 | 3:40 PM – 5:40 PM | Islander D
Pathologists, in their key diagnostic role, must understand genomic testing. A whole exome sequence currently costs less than $1,000 and next-generation sequencing techniques have already led to personalized chemotherapy for cancer patients. This session will focus on practical issues for the pathologist utilizing both lectures, covering current methods in genomic testing and evidence for clinical benefit, and interactive approaches related to interpreting genomic data and communicating results to other health care professionals. Using actual genomic data sets, participants will be taken through the process of data collection, analysis and annotation. To foster communication skills, participants will generate pathology reports containing genomic information. The session will be led by members of the Training Residents in Genomics (TRIG) Working Group. The TRIG Working Group is nationally recognized in the pathology community for developing tools to educate pathologists in genomic medicine.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
• Identify the technical and interpretive limitations of microarray testing and next-generation sequencing of importance to a pathologist.
• Evaluate the clinical applications of currently available genomic testing and evidence for benefit.
• Develop skills needed by pathologists in order to interpret genomic testing and communicate results.

Genomic Pathology for Residents
Richard Haspel, MD, PhD, FASCP and Laura Tafe, MD, FASCP
7 CME/CMLE Credits
Saturday, September 17 | 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM | Banyan F
Next-generation sequencing methods and multi-gene panels have entered clinical practice. Pathologists, as directors of molecular pathology laboratories, are already playing a leading role in applying genomic technology to patient care. Regardless of your planned specialty, genomic pathology will become an important part of your career as a pathologist. Using a case-based, interactive small-group approach, workshop participants will learn principles related to the development of genomic assays and interpretation of results. The workshop will also include practical hands-on instruction with the use of online genomic pathology tools. The session will be led by members of the Training Residents in Genomics (TRIG) Working Group. The TRIG Group is nationally recognized in the pathology community for developing tools to educate pathologists in genomic medicine.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
• Using online tools, determine the clinical significance of genetic variants. • Describe the benefits and limitations of integrative genomic analyses.• Describe the reporting issues related to genomic analyses.

Cancer Immuno-Oncology: Changing the Way We Diagnose and Treat Patients with Cancer3.0 CME/CMLE Credits
Friday, September 16 | 8:00 AM – 11:10 AM | South Pacific D
As healthcare team members, pathologists and laboratory professionals must understand recent breakthroughs in immuno-oncology diagnosis and treatment to be able to perform and interpret tests according to emerging evidence-based best practices. In addition, pathologists and clinicians who use academic reference laboratories for immuno-oncology testing must be able to integrate ancillary test results with the full range of clinical-pathological findings and resolve potential discordances. This program will examine the impact of breakthroughs in immuno-oncology that are shifting diagnostic and treatment paradigms for patients with cancer and will explore new therapeutic antibodies as well as genetically engineered cellular therapies such as T-cells with chimeric antigen receptors (CARs) that augment immunity to cancer. These therapies, which have generated exciting results in patients with advanced cancers, also create new diagnostic challenges. Pathologists and laboratory professionals will be introduced to this rapidly evolving field with a focus on results from clinical trials and the impact that some of these new therapeutic approaches have on current diagnostic medicine including:
• Different forms of immuno-oncology that are currently FDA approved or under development for the treatment of cancer
• New diagnostic challenges created by immunotherapies• Cytokine release syndrome• Programmed death ligand 1 and programmed death 1 [PD-L1/PD-1]
immune checkpoint pathways
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
• Describe the different forms of immuno-oncology that are currently FDA approved or under development for the treatment of cancer
• Discuss new diagnostic challenges created by immunotherapies, including cytokine release syndrome and autoimmunity induced by these novel therapies
• Describe the impact of immuno-oncology drugs on CP laboratory diagnostics and AP diagnostics challenges
Cancer Immuno-Oncology: Changing the Way We Diagnose and Treat Patients with Cancer is supported by an educational grant from Janssen Biotech, Inc.
