Introduction

Welcome to the Assignment Book for Exploring the Old Testament. Please write your name on

the front cover of this and your workbook as soon as you receive them.

This Assignment Book contains information on the assessment that is needed for participants in

the unit to demonstrate competency in reading and understanding the Hebrew Scriptures, the

Old Testament in the Christian Bible. The unit acts as a foundation for the subsequent exegesis

of the Old Testament, whether for personal study of the scriptures, discipleship formation,

further formal study, preparation of worship services /sermon or Lay Preacher accreditation.

The assessment for this unit includes both formative and summative elements.

Formative tasks help to form your skills so you can complete the assignments.

They are mostly completed in the Workbook.

Summative assignments assess your knowledge and skills, and are to be completed in

this book.

The unit is offered over a period of twenty sessions, which include five sessions for completion

of some of the tasks and assignments. However, you will need to do some homework for both

formative and summative assessments.

Exploring the Old Testament is one of five units offered by UME, which together provide the

necessary educational component for those seeking accreditation as Lay Preachers within the

Uniting Church in Australia. The course is also open to any interested lay person to attend,

complete all the assessment tasks, and gain a Certificate of Completion.

If you complete an electronic version of this Assignment Book, after you have completed the

tasks and typed your full name into the declaration on page 2, return it by email to:

Assignment 2: Word Study

The culture and language of the Hebrew Bible is, in most cases, quite foreign to our own language and culture. This assignment encourages you to explore some of those differences by using a word study.

Refer back to your choice of Scripture and its associated word on page 19. This task will require you to study your chosen word to find out how it may have been understood and used more broadly in the Old Testament.

A Concordance lists every use of the word in the Bible. The relevant pages, extracted from Bible Gateway,

have been included in your workbook for your convenience (see pages 120-123 of Student Workbook).

Complete the questions that follow:

1. How many times is the word used in the Bible?

2. In what book or books of the Old Testament does the word appear more frequently? Why?

3. Look up some (or all) of the Old Testament listings of your chosen word, including in the passage

you have chosen. Think about the different ways it is used depending on the context. What does

the word mean in different contexts?

Page 20: Assignment Book - Uniting Mission and Education · Task D: Final Reflection (Pages 15-16) Complete in session 19. Re-read your initial reflection in your workbook. In this Assignment

20 Living Our Faith: Exploring the Old Testament – Assignment Book

4. Briefly look up some New Testament uses of your chosen word. Is the word used differently in

these texts? Describe the difference, if any.

5. Write a statement which summarises your findings and begins to answer the question of what

your chosen word can mean, especially within the text you have chosen.

Assignment 3: Exegesis

Once you have completed your word study you should consult other reference works to determine answers to the following questions. This is also called exegesis – unpacking what the text means

1. What are the themes of this passage?

2. How does the passage relate to Israel’s history? You should consider when it was written or edited, and when it might have been especially important in Israel’s life.

3. What theological issues does the passage raise?

4. What relationship do the themes and theological of the passage have to our 21st century context

or to your preaching/worshipping context?

22 Living Our Faith: Exploring the Old Testament – Assignment Book

Continue examining the passage by considering the following questions:

5. What does the passage say to you in your own faith journey?

6. How might you preach on this passage?

Assignments 4a & 4b: Prepare and Deliver a Narrative Sermon

a). Narrative Sermon Preparation

Once you have completed the exegesis of your passage, you can start planning your narrative sermon. It should be no more than 10 minutes in length.

Thinking about your ministry context, choose an audience to whom you would be delivering the sermon. Although the actual audience will be the class, your intended audience can have a different make up. It might be a mixed group of children during a Sunday worship service, or it could be a group of old people at a nursing home. You should select an audience who are appropriate to your ministry setting, or your future ministry setting.

1. Who is your intended audience of your narrative sermon? Briefly describe them… Age, culture, theological context

2. With this audience in mind, what is the relevance of your chosen passage to that group? That is, what difference does this story make in the lives of your chosen audience? Refer back to your exegesis on previous pages. Which themes, issues or highlights would you emphasise with this audience?
