Please partner with us!In order to give people in our community a hand up, we depend on the generous donations of others. Donating is easy online at habitatpwc.org or with the enclosed envelope. Your donation will help residents right here in our community live in safe, decent and affordable housing.

GivingahanduptoourfamilypartnersHabitat for Humanity Prince William County is dedicated to eliminating substandard housing in our community. Through our Homeownership, Home Preservation, Critical Home Repair and Weatherization programs we have helped more than 140 families achieve decent, safe and affordable housing since 1994.Retired Great-grandmother and Proud Homeowner Receives Hand Up Margie, retired, is 85-years-old and lives in the Dumfries townhome she purchased four years ago. Margie grew up in Chicago and was the youngest of six children. Her father was a Pullman porter. She has four kids of her own, spread across the country, 15 grandkids and 10 great grandkids!

Margie’s pride of ownership shows as soon as you walk up to her home. She decorated her entrance with beautiful planters and flowers to welcome all of her guests. “I am frugal and purchase just about everything second hand, but I like to keep everything I have in good repair and tidy,” says Margie. “I believe that if I beautify my house, it may be an inspiration for others in my neighborhood to do the same.”

In November, Habitat for Humanity Prince William County, along with a total of 23 volunteers replaced the roof shingles; installed railings on the front and rear porch steps; repaired and sealed the very drafty front door; caulked, sealed and painted the windows and doors; replaced the rear sliding glass door; repaired the attached rear shed; sealed and insulated the attic to lower utility bills; secured the stair railing; replaced her stove; painted the rear fence; and replaced the HVAC unit. Thanks to our volunteers and sponsors, Margie will spend the winter months in a newly insulated and more energy efficient home.

Wet and Drafty Home Causes Concern for Manassas CoupleCarlos and Margaret Orama purchased their Manassas home brand new in 1987. Manassas residents since 1982, Margaret is now retired on disability and Carlos, also disabled, works part time at a local grocery store. The Oramas are a loving couple who have known each other since they were teenagers. They discovered later in life that they grew up just blocks from each other in Manhattan but didn’t actually meet until both of their families moved to Puerto Rico. After meeting in Puerto Rico they got engaged and moved back to the United States.

In the 26 years since purchasing their home, wear and tear has caused some repair and safety concerns that required attention. The front door was terribly uneven and was not flush with the front stoop, causing water to seep into the basement. The door frame was damaged and rotted, causing even more water leakage and substantial air flow into the house.

In December, with the help of volunteers, Habitat made the much needed repairs to the Orama’s home including:

replacing the front door and framing; securing the iron railings on the front steps; replacing the front and back gutters; replacing, painting and caulking the fascia and trim boards; repairing and staining the fence; plus, insulating the attic.

Bright Outlook and Community Spirit Drives Habitat Office VolunteerVivian Mays has been volunteering in the Habitat for Humanity Prince William County office since June of 2013. Dependable and incredibly smart, Vivian’s work ethic is second to none. She has done everything from large mailings to complex spreadsheets to working in the Habitat ReStore —and much more.Vivian helped organize our Un-trim-a-tree program to benefit needy children in Manassas and she was instrumental in updating and organizing our donor and volunteer database management system. Vivian also secured donations from local companies for two Habitat events and assisted with logistics for EXIT Realty’s Cornerstone Sponsor community event. She also keeps Habitat’s email and contact lists up to date and provides impeccable and friendly customer service to all callers. When we moved offices, Vivian

helped set up our new office, organized supplies and prepared volunteer work areas.Vivian recently started a full-time job with a government contractor. A single mom with one daughter, Vivian is also in the process of obtaining national certification in massage therapy. Her ultimate career goal is to start a mobile massage and spa business.Even with everything going on in her life, Vivian comes into the Habitat office with a bright smile and a can-do attitude. We are so appreciative of everything she has done for our office. “I want to help people and I enjoy doing different things every day,” says Vivian when asked why she volunteers. “That’s why I chose to volunteer at Habitat – because I know they’re helping people in our community.”

Habitat office volunteer, Vivian Mays, is always ready for new challenges. She personifies Habitat for Humanity’s spirit of giving back to the community.

HeritageHuntPitchesintoSupportHabitatRecently, the Heritage Hunt community in Gainesville invited the Habitat ReStore truck to pick up donations from the entire community during their annual Community Clean-up and Recycle Day. Many residents of this 2,000-home, 55+ active living community took the opportunity to clean out their garages and homes while also serving the community. We’re grateful to Heritage Hunt for including Habitat for Humanity in their efforts for the second straight year. Donations to the Habitat ReStore are sold to the public for 40-90% off retail prices. The proceeds then support Habitat’s homeownership and home repair programs for low-income families in Prince William County, Manassas and Manassas Park. Donations—which may include furniture, appliances, building materials, doors windows and household items—are also tax-deductible.If your community is interested in the ReStore truck picking up donations, please call 703-369-6145. We hope to see you soon!
