A MESSAGE FROM FATHER PHIL
Welcome to Christmas at St. Raphael!
Merry Christmas! Whether you’re here at our church a lot, or
visiting with family or friends today, or even joining us for the "irst
time – welcome! This year, as I jump into my fourth time
celebrating Christmas with the thousands of people who come to St.
Raphael each December 24th and 25th, I’ve been remembering my
Christmas 2013:
I was living and studying in Santiago, Chile for a year. I was asked to
celebrate Christmas Mass (en Espanol, of course) at a little chapel. It
was just me, a few of the sisters who lived there, and a few families.
One of the young couples, with a little girl and a new baby on the way,
let me know they had not been to church for a while but had been
moved to come back for Christmas. What a joy it was to be with them,
knowing that with all the reasons they had felt distant from God and
church, Jesus had invited them back for his birthday celebration. It
was clear that Jesus, “Emmanuel” (which means “God-with-us”) had
been with them all along, loving them and leading them.
I recently shared with everyone at St. Raphael part of my own story of being drawn back to Jesus and his
Church after some time away. A special person in my life invited me to spend some time with people
exploring the most important questions in life – and when I accepted I found, somewhat to my surprise,
that God was there waiting.
You’ll see information in this bulletin and around our church about Alpha. Alpha is a series of evenings
with great food, a presentation on big questions about life and faith, and time for an open discussion
about those questions – anybody can share anything they want. We have an Alpha series beginning
January 18, and will have others later in the year. If you have, like I did, a lot of questions about life and
faith, I think you might like Alpha and I invite you to try it! We’re going to take as many people as we can
in January, but we’ll also let you know when other opportunities for Alpha will be happening in the near
future.

CHRISTMAS FROM AROUND THE WORLD RIGHT HERE- At St. Raphael we are blessed to have parishioners that hail
from over 100 different countries, and this time of year is especially rich with different traditions. This Christmas, parishioners
from African countries have teamed up to create our nativity scene in the Atrium. And, at the end of the 6pm Christmas Eve
Mass, Bengali members of our parish will join together to offer songs from their country that celebrate Jesus' birth. It is a
special and unique charism of the St. Raphael community, that we can celebrate the faith that unites us with so many beautiful
traditions from our different cultures. It's also a wonderful time to honor and celebrate the tradition of those who have been a
part of our parish for a long time. Please take note of the large Nativity that's in front of the music are in the sanctuary. The
beautiful wood #igures were made by one of our own, long-time parishioner Paul Ruocchio.
Condolences to the family of Police Of#icer Justin A. Leo, who recently died in the line of duty in Girard, OH.
