Welcome from the Morris County Board of Chosen Freeholders

The Morris County Board of Chosen Freeholders welcomes you to the Atrium Art Gallery and the hundreds of pieces it contains on a rotating basis.

Designed to fill the need in Morris County for a location for artists to exhibit their work, the gallery offers four floors of atrium and lobby space for exhibition in the County of Morris Administration and Records Building located on Court Street in Morristown.

The exhibitions have been viewed by hundreds of residents. Indicative of the support the Gallery has received from artists in Morris County and throughout New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania, is the long list of advance bookings and ongoing requests to exhibit.

The Art Gallery started in 1977 in a small waiting room in the former County Administration Building, now the Courthouse Annex. In this room, the Morris County Heritage Commission held numerous small exhibitions of paintings, prints and photographs by well-known New Jersey artists. The Heritage Commission continues to contribute artwork to the Atrium Art Gallery.

In January 2008, at the request of the County, Morris Arts assumed oversight for planning exhibitions at the Atrium Gallery.

As you walk through the corridors viewing the artwork, the Board of Chosen Freeholders is certain you will enjoy the exhibition and be enriched by its contents.

Kathryn A. DeFillippo, Freeholder Director

ARTSee ARTsee is an artist’s collective founded in 2010 upon the fortuitous meeting of two artists. After living and teaching art in Asheville, NC for several years, Caren Frost Olmsted returned to her hometown of Basking Ridge, NJ but she missed the Asheville experience of being surrounded by art, constant creativity, and the inspiration that fellow artists provide. Caren was introduced by a mutual friend to Bernardsville artist and art educator Gail Mardfin and proposed, “How’dya like to start an artists’ studio tour with me?” The rest is history! ARTsee currently sponsors two annual free community events – the ARTsee Happening in the spring and the ARTsee Open Studio Tour in the fall. On display in the Atrium Gallery are works by ARTsee’s painters, photographers, and mixed-media artists. Also included in the group and on the Tour are artists working in three dimensions, including ceramicists, jewelers, and sculptors. These visual creators are happy to welcome visitors, answer questions about the processes they use, and sell their work. ARTsee members meet monthly in each other’s homes and studios, where information about exhibitions, workshops, marketing, and new ideas are shared, and feedback on works in progress can be solicited. The group continues to attract more artists from areas around Basking Ridge and Bernardsville, NJ. This Atrium exhibit offers a sampling of the work of ARTsee members. See artseenj.org for more information. ARTsee welcomes visitors and new members at all times! Our mission is building camaraderie among area artists and promoting our vibrant arts community. For more information please visit http://www.ArtseeTour.com or contact Tracy Fox at [email protected]. To purchase artwork, please contact Gallery Director, Dr. Lynn L. BLACKWELL STREET CENTER FOR THE ARTS In 1983, a group of local artists interested in establishing a permanent space in which to exhibit their work founded The Blackwell Street Center for the Arts as a cooperative gallery in Dover, New Jersey. Over the years, the group evolved, becoming a nonprofit corporation in 1989, with the additional aim of providing education and information on fine arts to the public in the form of lectures, seminars, workshops and community programs. In 1996, the Blackwell Street Center for the Arts became an internet “cybergallery” under the web name of “Blackwell St. Artists,” shedding its physical location but remaining dedicated to its mission of exhibiting art, educating the public about art and providing opportunities in the visual arts to the larger community, especially students. Its members continue to mount exhibits at various venues throughout the metropolitan area. In recognition of its work over the years, The Blackwell Street Center for the Arts has received grants from the Dodge Foundation, Casio Corporation and Morris Arts. One of this organization’s most outstanding contributions and important legacies in the arts is its annual Blackwell Street Juried Student Exhibit which, over the past 29 years, has grown enormously in size and scope and developed a reputation as one of the most prestigious exhibits for student artists in New Jersey. During the two-plus decades that this exhibit has existed, nearly 15,700 works of art by approximately 1,800 young artists have been selected, juried and professionally exhibited. Additionally, BSCA has sponsored Hispanic and Irish Art exhibits; participated in First Night on New Year's Eve and has mounted exhibits at Lever House Gallery (New York City), Johnson & Johnson, Nabisco, and the Cork Gallery (NYC), to name just a few prominent examples. Member artists work in a variety of media and styles. All membership applications are juried by the current members. For information or to join, call (973) 337-2143, visit the website at: www.blackwell-st-artists.org or write to: Blackwell St. Artists/ PO Box 808 / Denville, NJ 07834-0808 On May 12, 2011, The Blackwell Street Center for the Arts received the coveted Outstanding Arts Organization Award from Morris Arts for its outstanding work in promoting visual arts and particularly for its now 29 years of mounting the Blackwell Street Juried Student Exhibit. MYHELAN ARTISTS NETWORK, 4th Floor May 18 – August 31, 2017

MYHELAN ARTISTS NETWORK Native American linguist Lucy Blalock gave Myhelan its name (pronounced mah-hay’-lon), which means, in the Lenape language, “a gathering together of people.” Founded in 1993 Myhelan Cultural Arts Alliance, Inc. does business as Myhelan Cultural Arts Center, a non-profit 501©(3) corporation. In approximately 1997, a group of artists who were friends of Myhelan Cultural Arts Center, came together to form Myhelan Artists’ Network. Members lived in the Long Valley/Hackettstown/Chester and other surrounding areas. Its purpose was to provide camaraderie for area artists in monthly meetings. Members presented annual summer exhibitions at the Center and supported the Center financially.

In 1999 Myhelan Cultural Arts Center rented its first home in Long Valley and then, in 2001, bought and moved to 18 Schooley’s Mountain Road, Long Valley, NJ. The Myhelan mission was to be a resource for hosting world cultures, promoting understanding, and offering rare glimpses into the many faces and functions of art; essentially using the arts as a tool to build cultural understanding locally. Yearly exhibitions explored different countries and cultures like Nepal and Cuba to further manifest the mission. Approximately 13 years after its inception, Myhelan Cultural Arts Alliance, Inc. disbanded and the Myhelan Cultural Arts Center closed, but to present-day, Myhelan Artists’ Network has remained steadfastly active.

Today, this community of artists is spread throughout North and Central New Jersey and Eastern Pennsylvania. Over 20 artists’ strong, each member works in a range of media from painting, drawing and photography to pottery and mobile art. The group has exhibited at the Atrium Gallery 6 times, as well as various other local venues. Currently, meetings are held at the Center for Spiritual Living, in Morristown, NJ. DREW ART ASSOCIATION, 5th floor May 18 –August 31, 2017

L-R: Lyle Brehm’s watercolor, Monet’s Giverny; Celia Shaflucas’ oil, Saffron Roses in front of Window (Matisse); Ann Piekarz’s version (watercolor) of Klimt’s Lady in Gold; Kathy Haven’s oil, Solarium; Medy Bozkurtian’s oil, Manet’s Roses (Manet); Ann Piekarz’s version (watercolor) of Van Gogh’s Irises;

DREW ART ASSOCIATION - “Fabulous Fakes” In the early 1970's a small art group formed under the guidance or Dr. Lee Hall, Chair of the Art Department at Drew University. Studio space was made available to the artists, along with involvement in activities of the department. Since that time, the membership of the association has gained dimension and quality with ever-expanding exhibitions at public places and corporations which support art in public places.

The members of DAA are bound together by a love of the visual arts and the artists's universal need to share and show. We see art as a communication and each piece of work, whether it be a portrait, a scene, or a flower, is a message delivered from the artist through the medium to the viewer. Our communication to you is in group form, with respect for our various techniques, degrees of professionalism, and choice of medium. With each work of art we present to you, the viewer, an interpretation through color, line and form, of a moment captured in time.

The Drew Art Association has for the past five years enjoyed doing interpretations and copies of famous artists or famous paintings for exhibiting at our local library each Spring. We are excited that we can participate in the Atrium show which gives us opportunity to show most of the members' past and present works at one time.

To purchase artwork, please contact Gallery Director, Dr. Lynn L. Siebert, at [email protected]
