AUBURN ALLIANCE CHURCH 2016 Annual Meeting Minutes

January 27, 2016

Pastor Mark Mindek opened the meeting and led the congregation in song, “The Old Rugged Cross.”

Pastor Mark Mindek opened in prayer.

The Membership List was read, and a quorum was reached with 50 members present. (Note: 42 members are required for a quorum.)

Pastor Richter asked those present to review the minutes from the January 27, 2016 Annual Meeting. A motion and second were made to accept the minutes as written. The motion was approved.

Pastor Richter stated that, in the past, the reports read during the Annual Meeting included the Pastor, Associate Pastor, Elders. A motion and second were made to read those reports. The motion was approved.

Eric Quinn talked about the Connection Ministry, an assimilation and mobilization ministry. We want people to understand the church, who we are, what we are, what our culture is. The mobilization part is taking people in the church, finding out where their gifts are in the church, moving people into leadership positions, servant leaders. There is a list of all positions, and we will try to plug people into ministries. This will all start with Link classes. The first Link group is meeting Pastor Richter. Pastor will go over the Fourfold Gospel. The second Link group is led by Eric about spiritual gifts, where the group will talk about ministries in the church. The third Link group is led by Pastor Mark, and will talk about baptism, membership, small groups.

Treasurer’s Report Tim Littlejohn read the Treasurer’s Annual Report.

There was a motion and second made to accept the Treasurer’s Report. Motion carried.

2016 Budget Tim Littlejohn asked for people to review the 2016 budget, which has increased.

Rhonda Delaney asked if we still take out Council money, even though there is not Council this year. Yes, and the money sits in the account for next year. Will the Life conference money be taken out before the Life conference in July? Will the money be available for this year? Yes.

George Allhusen asked about Snow Removal, 5130, budgeted at $3,000, as to whether we paid out more than $2,200 last year? Yes. Becky Ketchum asked if the excess would roll over if there is a light winter. No, we pay in two installments. Mark explained that we pay for a certain number of plows, and the maximum number for the base rate is 21 plows.

Mickey Brown, asked about line 5220, Custodial services and supplies. Matt Noll spends a lot of time here cleaning the church, and we wanted to give him a raise for cleaning the church. Eric said several things are rolled into here, custodial services and supplies. We are talking about getting a supply service that would help out. The number of hours was increased from where it was, 10 man hours to 13 man hours per week. And the rate went up from $11 to $13/hour. Mickey asked about actual numbers, $515, which is just supplies. Where is his salary in the budget? It is in the top line.

Don said that it looks like the line 5220, December 2015 number is not correct, that is only the supply portion. The total number for 2015 for 5220 is $3,263.96, which would include the salary and supplies.

Becky asked if there was any way to increase the man hours. Mark said that we are looking at Cintas, a service provider to supply soap, towels, dispensers, and fill all of supplies. For the sake of time, Mark is looking at the service providers, trying to get them to $100/month plus materials. Mark said that we should set a trigger point to get this service going; that trigger point should be averaging regularly about 300 in attendance per week. This would not affect Matt’s time; it would alleviate his time and let him address other aspects of our building.

Hector Lowery said that he works for a chemical company and could assist with this.

Howard said that Matt and his family are very hard workers, and wanted to say thank you.

At this point, Eric Quinn put a new budget spreadsheet on the screen, as the one in the packet was incorrect.

Mark said we need approval for two potential capital improvements in the coming year:

Hot water boiler unit (original building) - This is the original heating unit from 1981, Weil McLean, 76% efficient. Mark asked for advice from Mark Kepple. He has done research over the last few months, and Mark wants to present a potential option for a Gas fired, wall hung modulating condensing boiler plus Utica indirect water heater, 95% efficient, with a cost of $11,000 installed. This would save $1,150 per year by changing out the old boiler system into new boiler system, with a 10 year payback. Second Baptist Church is using this kind of unit.

Bucky asked about the maintenance program. We may save money per year, but he wondered if there were any higher costs in maintenance. There have been some issues with high efficiency units and maintenance costs. Becky Ketchum asked about a survey to see how much heat we need. Mark Kepple has looked at these

2016 Annual Report Page 7

items. Fran Herrick asked about the projected life expectancy of these units, as well as the warranty. The answer was not readily available. Lee Casler said that we are on borrowed time with the old unit, and that thousands of dollars could add up fast if this fails.

Discussion returned to the 2016 budget. The 2016 budget had three line items that were incorrect in packet. The correct numbers follow:

5130 Snow Removal is $2,500

5150 Prayer conference is $500

5190 Contribution to District HQ is $19,372.

Total 2016 Budget is $380,177.

On Miscellaneous, there was a lot more spent than budgeted for, some of which was NE district travel, which has all been paid back. Pastor and Renee’s celebration were also part of the number, as well as concerts and the church picnic. Howard Haines asked what the control is on this account. The bookkeeper puts the expense in miscellaneous if there is no account. The Budget Committee tried to fine tune and add categories so that this does not happen. Expenditures are voted on by BOM. Don Delaney said that BOM does review expenditures. Anything that is an in-out goes into the miscellaneous line as well. If any major expenditure that hits the account, the BOM is made aware of it. Eric talked about expenditures in Miscellaneous account, went through the spreadsheet January – October. Some of these expenditures can be put under different existing budget accounts. Revenues and reimbursements are not shown here, and maybe that could be shown in future budgets.

Custodial expenses are shown at $3,551. There was a question as to why the budget number is $12,000. Approximately $8,800 is for Matt, and the additional money is for services.

Becky Ketchum asked about line 5380, Adult Education material. This includes anything that is not CE related, like the Gods at War book. There needs to be an account to track where it is coming out of when we were purchasing material ahead of time, then reimbursed by people buying books. That number also included membership books, video purchased for membership, and pre-marital counseling sessions. Sunday School is under CE.

Motion and second were made to approve the 2016 budget. Motion carried.

Bylaw Changes See handout. Each bylaw change is represented as written in the handout, with discussion following. Language with a strikeout is proposed to be deleted; language that is underlined is proposed to be added. Bylaw Change #1

Article 5 - ELDERS

Section 2 - Membership a. The Elder board shall consist of the Senior Pastor and a senior pastoral staff member (at the senior pastor’s discretion) plus nine members elected for a term of three years. One-third of their number shall be elected each year. b. Due to the important nature of this postion, Section 5 - Eligibility shall be read before accepting any nominations from the floor for this office.

Motion and second made to approve Bylaw Change #1. Motion carried.

Page 8: Auburn Alliance Church 2016 Annual Report · 2020. 3. 14. · Auburn Alliance Church 2016 Annual Report January 25, 2017 Calling Statement: We are a family of believers, called to

2016 Annual Report Page 8

Bylaw Change #2

Section 5 - Eligibility Their character shall be in harmony with the requirements stated in I Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:5-9. An Elder shall be knowledgeable in the word of God and have an ability to exhort the Word. They should, also, be men of prayer. A divorced person who is remarried may be elected or appointed to the position of Elder only if the divorce(s) in question meet the criteria for biblically permissible divorce as outlined in the Christian & Missionary Alliance Statement on Marriage - Divorce - Remarriage. shall not be elected or appointed to the position of Elder.

Section 6 - Election to Office At the Annual Congregational meeting, the election of elders will be by secret ballot. The field of nominees will be equal to the number of open positions plus one. Nominees will be provided by the nominating committee. The nominees who receive the highest number of votes and the majority vote (51% of present members) for this office will constitute the election of these persons to office.

Section 7 - Nomination of Elders The Elder Board will provide a list of approved men to the Nominating Committee 90 days before the annual congregational meeting. Nominations for the office of Elder by a member must come 90 days prior to the annual meeting, through the Nominating Committee. No nominations for Elder from the floor of the annual congregational meeting shall be entertained. A nomination for the office of Elder by a member must come in written form to the nominating committee 90 days prior to the annual meeting with the expressed consent of the individual being suggested. The Nominating committee bears the responsibility of either accepting that nomination as their own, or as a nomination from the congregation separate from the names the nominating committee will put forth. Those names presented to the Nominating Committee by a member, approved by the Elder Board, may be placed upon the official ballot. They will be identified by an asterisk (*) and an appropriate footnote explaining that they were nominated by a member.

Eric Quinn made a motion that we divide the question so that Section 5 - Eligibility, Divorce and Remarriage clause, be separated from the rest of the discussion. Second was made, and the motion carried with one no vote.

Section 5 – Eligibility:

Eric clarified that there is no agenda from the Elders on this, that there is nobody in mind. Eric read from the Alliance bylaws about divorce and remarriage and licensing for workers. The Alliance bylaws include discussion about the candidate being married and divorced before becoming a Christian, abandonment, the other spouse being unfaithful. The language includes a condition that the candidate has done everything he could, and the marriage cannot be saved. The statement was adopted in 1977.

AAC bylaws are not in line with the CMA guidelines. Ken Bohman asked whether it is an option, and whether it has to happen. AAC can be more conservative. In the CMA guidelines, the district vets the person. What happens here? There is more work for Elders.

Bucky Haines disagreed with the proposal, that it should even be coming up or considered, as it is against scripture and context of scripture. Mark gave the framework, and the Pastors are together on this subject. Pastor Mark said that CMA believes as a denomination that there are some parties innocent in the divorce process through the vetting process. How can we hold that against them? Pastor Richter and Pastor Mark reviewed scripture to give context to the discussion.

Page 9: Auburn Alliance Church 2016 Annual Report · 2020. 3. 14. · Auburn Alliance Church 2016 Annual Report January 25, 2017 Calling Statement: We are a family of believers, called to

2016 Annual Report Page 9

Motion and second were made to hold off on voting. Vote: 14 in favor, 26 opposed. Motion failed.

Sandy Phetteplace said the Lord forgives.

Pastor Richter made the decision as the Chair to hold off on the vote for this bylaw change. We will postpone, and we will come back to it and address it from the pulpit.

Discussion continued to address Sections 2, 6 and 7.

Rhonda Delaney made a motion, and second was made, to take each section separately. Motion carried unanimously.

Section 6 – Election to Office

Eric made a motion to change language to “not more than.: Second. Motion carried.

Bucky asked if this change can be made because it was not posted for two weeks. Eric said that we can because we are in the scope of the bylaw.

Eric made a second motion, to strike “51% of present members.” Second. Motion carried.

Mark said that the reason for this was to provide more freedom to members to vote in secret ballot, instead of having to vote people up and down in front of them. Becky Ketchum asked about absentee ballots. Eric said it could be an option. Rhonda asked why we would need to have a number of names plus one more than needed. It creates competition and division. Especially if Section 7 is approved, the congregation can have a say in bringing forward names. Eric said that Robert’s Rules said that it is good practice not to bring more names than needed. Mark said the intent is to empower the congregation. Sandy said that the nominating committee struggles to get the number of names needed as it is. Bucky said that one time there was a nomination from the floor, and that person was not voted in. It is good to have lack of nominations from the floor.

Motion to approve section 6 as proposed and amended. Second. Secret ballot vote: 39 in favor, 6 opposed. Motion carried.

Section 7 - Nomination of Elders:

Motion and second were made to approve. Motion carried

Section 2:

This section becomes obsolete because of the passage of section 7. Motion and second were made. Motion carried.

Bylaw Change #3

Article 6 - BOARD OF MINISTRY

Section 1 - Membership The Board of Ministry shall consist of the Senior Pastor, a pastoral staff member (at the Sr. pastor’s discretion), Secretary, Treasurer, Assistant Treasurer (Financial Recording Secretary), Chairman of the Elders, Chairman of the Trustees, and Chairman of the Committee on Christian Education, Business Administrator. One additional member to the Governing Board shall be elected at the Annual Meeting (if the Business

Page 10: Auburn Alliance Church 2016 Annual Report · 2020. 3. 14. · Auburn Alliance Church 2016 Annual Report January 25, 2017 Calling Statement: We are a family of believers, called to

2016 Annual Report Page 10

Administrator position is vacant a second member at large shall be elected at the Annual Meeting). In the event the Chairman of the Elders is already a member of the Board of Ministry, the vice chairman of the Elders shall serve on the Board of Ministry. In the event the Chairman of the Facilities Team Trustees, or the Chairman of the Committee on Christian Education is already a member of the Board of Ministry, that particular group will elect another representative from their number to serve on the Board of Ministry.

This language is proposed as previous by law changes missed changing “Trustees” to “Facilities Team.”

Motion and second were made. Motion carried.

Bylaw Change #4

Article 8 - DEACONESS Section 2 - Membership The Board of Deaconesses shall consist of at least six members elected for a two year term. One half of their membership shall be elected each year. Additional members may be added at their discretion to complete the current year.

There were questions around whether Deaconnesses could be added without congregation vote. The answer is yes, these positions would be self-appointed. This would allow for flexibility when more deaconesses are needed.

Motion and second were made. Motion carried.

Bylaw Change #5

Article 10 - COMMITTEE ON CHRISTIAN EDUCATION Section 2 - Membership The Committee on Christian Education shall consist of at least eight members. These shall be the Pastor, or another member of the Pastoral staff, the Children's Coordinator, the Youth Coordinator, the College and Career Coordinator, the Adult Coordinator, the Christian Service Director, a Chairman and a Secretary. Additional members may be added at their discretion to complete the current year.

Section 3 - Term of Office The term of office shall be one year. The Chairman, Secretary and Christian Service Director Members of the Christian Education Committee listed in section 2 - Membership shall be elected by the congregation at the Annual Meeting of the church. The four Coordinators shall be elected by the congregation at the Semi-Annual Meeting of the church.

Section 2 – Membership: This proposal is the same idea as the proposal for the Deaconesses. There was a question as to what the titles would be for new members added. Chad Mitchell talked about the reasoning for this proposal. A person stepped down from a position, and the position really needed to be split into multiple positions because there was so much work. CE took a look at all positions as a whole and what is practical for one person to do. Ken said there are job descriptions for every member of the committee. Chad said that separate job descriptions are being made for each function. Eric said that he had suggested a change to this, so that CE positions should not be voted by title, just that they are on the committee, and that they split up responsibilities once they get there.

Page 11: Auburn Alliance Church 2016 Annual Report · 2020. 3. 14. · Auburn Alliance Church 2016 Annual Report January 25, 2017 Calling Statement: We are a family of believers, called to

2016 Annual Report Page 11

Motion and second were made. Motion carried.

Section 3 – Term of Office:

The term of office does not have to be discussed if there is a bylaw change in section 2.

Motion and second were made. Motion carried.

Bylaw Change #6

Article 11 - OFFICERS

Section 1 - Qualification of Officers a. Only those persons having been official members of this church for a period of at least six months, or who are members and have completed the assimilation and mobilization process (Connection Ministry) of the church shall be qualified to be elected to and to hold any office listed in Paragraph b. Only those persons having been official members of this church for a period of twelve months shall be qualified to be elected to an hold any office listed in Paragraph b; except that if a person has been a member in good standing of another Alliance Church for a period of one year immediately before joining this church; he then need be a member of this church for a period of only six months before being qualified to hold such elective office. b. Offices requiring church membership, shall include the following in addition to those listed in the Constitution - (Reference: Manual of the Christian and Missionary Alliance) additional members to the Board of Ministry, Elders, Trustees Facilities Team, and Committee on Christian Education.

Becky asked about Connection ministry. People do not have to fulfill the requirement of six months if they go through connection. Bucky said that you cannot necessarily know someone in that time frame. Becky said that connection ministry is so new, that we do not know how thorough it is. Bucky said that this involves the position of Elder, and you cannot know someone in that time frame. Eric said that the Connection ministry will allow people to have a base knowledge of the Alliance and agree with it. Connie York asked if people who go through Connection are going to be members automatically. No. Connie said that there is something special about loving your church enough to be a member.

Motion and second were made. Motion carried, 6 votes opposed.

There was a motion and second made for the change to include Facilities Team. Motion carried.

Bylaw Change #7

Section 5 - Effective Date and Definition a. Persons now holding office, including those elected for a full term at the 2004 Annual Meeting, shall be entitled to succeed themselves per Section 4 – Succession in Office. Their previous terms of office shall not be considered in determining their eligibility. Due to the small size of the current congregation and the need to have qualified officers, Section 4 - Succession in Office will not become fully effective until the By-Laws are duly amended to remove this paragraph. Until that time, Section 4 will serve as a guide only for the Nominating Committee.

Motion and second were made. Motion carried.

The Nominating Committee shall consist of the senior pastor, two members from the church Membership elected at the Annual Meeting, and two elected by, but not necessarily from the governance authority, at least three months prior to the annual meeting for a term of service for one year.

Kitchen Project

Mark talked about the kitchen project. Mark referenced the power point, which outlined transforming space in the fellowship hall into a kitchen. We need a warming kitchen. Mark showed drawings of what the fellowship hall would look like. He discussed all appliances that would be included. Mark broke the project into 5 stages. The grand total of cost is $38,800. We have approximately $16,000 right now. There will be a lot of work done by congregation. A vote on this project will be at a future meeting.

Howard said we should get rid of our mortgage before doing a big capital expenditure.

Denise Littlejohn thanked guys that have been doing work around the church.

*Christmas Day Service – December 25 I thank God for each and every one of you who give sacrificially of your time, money, and talents! Praise God for those who have a servant’s heart.

I am excited about the new assimilation program and deeply appreciate those who have taken on the tedious task of putting all the information provided together every week. The Communication Cards that people are filling out each Sunday are making the church office aware of information changes (addresses or phone numbers), prayer requests, and the desire to become part of a ministry here at the church. These cards go a long way in helping us stay informed.

I have enjoyed being involved in the link classes that have taken place five times this past year. There are many who have been here for years who have become more aware of our beliefs, our denomination, and our passions just by attending these classes. Please consider attending if you haven’t already done so!

Finally, I would encourage you to be involved in our new Connection small group ministry. Small groups provide a non-threatening environment where one can invite friends and neighbors who might be too intimidated to walk into a church building. They can also help in the process of assimilating new attendees to our church, as well as promoting more fellowship, encouragement, and prayer. I would love to see more participation in these small groups! I was reading an article recently about the top seven methods of church growth. One way a church grows is by being visible in the community. I think that we have come a long way in this area. Very few people that I talk to are not familiar with our church in some way. The most important method of getting people to come to church is when those who attend invite others. Consider promoting Auburn Alliance this year with friends and family. At our Christmas Eve service I challenged everyone to bring one person to Christ this year…at least one. What a difference that would make in our church.

I want to thank Julie Lovell for her dedicated service in the church office as Secretary, and Mark Mindek for his hard work as Associate Pastor. He has been a blessing to me as I’m sure he has been to you. Also, I am thankful for my wife Renee’ for her listening ear, encouragement, and involvement. Also, I appreciate the help of Matt and Diana Noll and family, as well as Sue Watson, for keeping our facilities clean and presentable.

I am excited as we enter into this New Year! But, my constant concern is that we do not become complacent, and forget that there is a great amount of work that still needs to be done in this community! May God find us being faithful when He returns, because in the final analysis that is really all that matters!!

Respectfully submitted, Rev. David L. Richter

Associate Pastor’s Report As I begin to write this annual report, I am immediately filled with honor and appreciation for being able to be one of your pastors at Auburn Alliance Church. Probably the most astounding truth that has risen through this past year is the many talented and gifted people that make AAC their home church. I marvel at how so many of you are using your gifts when I see how your talents fit into the mosaic of what God has put together to accomplish His Biblical truth of Ephesians 4:16:

“From Him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.”

Page 16: Auburn Alliance Church 2016 Annual Report · 2020. 3. 14. · Auburn Alliance Church 2016 Annual Report January 25, 2017 Calling Statement: We are a family of believers, called to

You may not know this, but many of you have ministered to Becky and I through this past year by simply being YOU, and we so much appreciate your clear demonstration of love and sacrifice to us and to the ministry of our church. I love seeing how great God is in your lives, how He is working and bringing you into a deeper and more intimate relationship with Him and using all of us together to accomplish His will. I truly am thankful for being here and for working alongside of you in God’s call upon our church family. It has been a blessing to pray, preach, counsel, support, enjoy, laugh, cry, listen, share, be encouraged by, work with and live life with you.

This past year I was able to focus on formalizing the creation of an Advisory Team that assisted the Elders in administering, implementing and launching the Connection Group Ministry for 2017. I thank the Advisory Team for putting in many hours in preparation and brain-storming with me in this process. I am truly excited about what will happen in this coming year as we meet together to study, share, grow and learn from each other through the Connection Groups.

For the second year in a row, the use of our talented and skilled retirees has accomplished many tasks and duties that needed attention. I am very much appreciative of these men, giving of their time and skill in finishing these endless tasks.

This past year also saw the securing of a fill permit to begin the process of filling in over the hill with the intended purpose of expanding our parking lot and giving us as high as 40-44 more spaces to park. This past year has also seen the securing of a remodeling permit for the kitchen, which we hope to be completed by the end of March. It should not be long before we don’t have to make the long journey to the basement for kitchen supplies in preparation for times of fellowship.

I want to be sure to thank Pastor David Richter and Renee’ for their faithful and abiding service to the church and to Becky and I; as well as Julie Lovell’s consistent management of a million unseen responsibilities for AAC in keeping us moving forward for the cause of Christ. Thank you very much!

This coming year I hope will yield the formation of a long-term planning committee to come alongside of the Board of Elders and Board of Ministries, to begin drawing out, in pencil, where we are going as a church, both as it relates to facilities and ministry. We have been truly blessed as a church in so many ways, financially and with personnel that are not by coincidence, but divinely appointed by God for the proclamation of His Name in our community.

Thank you for your trust and support. It is truly an honor for Becky and I to minister with you!

In His Service, Rev. D. Mark Mindek

Elders’ Report From the perspective of the leadership team, 2016 has been a year of transition for Auburn Alliance. Transition that we have prayed will lead each person to find and use their gifts to share God’s love along the way.

While the increase in numbers is easily sensed, the most wonderful observation at Auburn Alliance is that more people are just hanging out; spending more time with each other; laughing with each other; loving on each other; caring for each other and enjoying the growing relationships that are building in our congregation. The beginning of 2016 saw the institution of the Auburn Alliance Connection Ministry. Through this ministry there were about 45 people who completed the three sessions of the Auburn Alliance Link classes, where they got to interact with the pastors and others to learn about what Auburn Alliance believes, and what makes up the vision of our ministry. The Link classes have become “Step 1” for people who are considering member-ship. Everyone is encouraged to go through the Link classes, even if you have been a part of the church for many years.

Another part of the Connection Ministry that has proven highly valuable is the weekly Connection Cards that we ask everyone to fill out. These cards have given the Pastors much more insight into how we can better care for our congregation; have given us the tools to follow up with new attendees; and has provided an avenue for helping to keep up with those in the Auburn Alliance family that have needs that we never would have known about before these cards were put into place. PLEASE take the time to fill out these cards every week so that we can help you and your family connect better with the leadership of the church.

We saw many great events in 2016 that continue to impact our church. There were over 2000 kids that came through at Trunk-or-Treat… And that number does not include the adults that came through with them! There were events that focused on outreach such as the Blessing of the Bikers, Vacation Bible School, the Christmas Musical and the Drive-Through Living Nativity.

We also held events that were focused on those in the congregation. There was a focus on prayer during which there were two concerts of prayer. We had good turn-outs for our February marriage conference, and our Missions celebration in October.

One of the major items on the list of accomplishments in 2016 was the preparation for our Connection Groups ministry. It was a heavy lift by a lot of people to get the logistics taken care of so that we could have a successful Connection Group launch at the beginning of 2017. We are grateful for the hard work of those on the Connection Group Advisory Committee (Mark and Becky Mindek, Dennis and Janice Lio, Dave Carlson and Nicole Quinn). There were four training sessions for small group coaches and hosts that were very well put together, and we look forward to training more of the Auburn Alliance family as the Connection Group ministry grows.

As I write this report, the first week of Connection Groups is just wrapping up and we are excited to note that we had over 70 people attend a small group in the first week of the ministry. We are praying for relationships to build, and for God to lead in helping people find deeper personal application of the teaching and scripture through this ministry.

In 2017 the Elders are focusing on spiritual growth. We are focused on understanding how people grow spiritually, what the signs of spiritual growth are, and what we should expect for a church that is driven by people that are growing in their faith. As Auburn Alliance grows in numbers, there is a greater and greater

2016 Annual Report Page 18

need for everyone to use their gifts and talents for God’s glory, and to help others in the Auburn Alliance family to become the effective Christian that God desires them to be.

As Elders, we ask that you join us in praying that each person that attends Auburn Alliance hears and answers the call to be used by God to share their love with everyone he puts in their path.

Lastly, I want to say a special thank you to Don Delany who was my predecessor as the Elder Chairman. Don has shared his experience, his notes and his wisdom with me to help guide me in my first year as the chairman.

Treasurer’s Report

I would like to start by stating 2016 was a very positive year financially for Auburn Alliance Church. Our operating income exceeded our expenses by more than $10,000. Here are the 2016 financial highlights:

Total giving for operating expenses was $372,366.37 which averages to $7161.90 per week. We spent $362,342.97, or an average of $6968.13.

Mortgage payments totaled $76,618.17. Of this amount $28,454.30 was interest. The principal was reduced by $48,163.87 bringing our mortgage loan balance to $595,015.61.

In January we finished paying the back dues we owed from 2012-2013 to the Christian and Missionary Alliance Northeastern District.

The church received a $10,000 grant for the kitchen remodel from the French & Metcalf Foundation.

As a church body, we gave $49,377.32 to the Great Commission Fund.

God has blessed Auburn Alliance Church financially. I am looking forward to seeing Him continue to meet our needs in the future.

Deaconess Report This has been a pretty quiet year for the Deaconesses. Only one funeral arrangement was sent and only a handful of flower arrangements were called for.

Denise Littlejohn continues to keep the prayer chain running smoothly.

Linda Eldred has furnished beautiful and much-appreciated dish gardens as needed.

Kathy Parker has kept us well-stocked with communion supplies and the Deaconesses have continued to rotate preparation of Communion elements, each one covering two months. This year we decided to try collecting the Communion cups in baskets near each door at the close of service, making it easier for collection and cleanup. While people are still getting used to the new practice, it seems to be going well.

Kathy Beaver has continued to organize meals for those in need due to hospitalization, illness, etc. Kathy Parker volunteered to head up that ministry when the Beavers are in Florida.

Debi Dineen has done an excellent job of accurately and concisely recording the minutes and sending them out to us almost as soon as our meetings are over.

We continue to be aware of the need to be available to those who come forward for prayer. It occurred to us that nearly all of us had been sitting in the same section on Sunday morning and don’t always see those who go forward. We have made an effort to try and change locations in order to be able to more quickly identify when someone has gone forward for prayer so that we can pray with them if they desire.

In August it was again our privilege to assist with the Baptismal service. We all count it a blessing to be a part of such a sacred occasion.

A String and a Prayer Quilting Ministry Report String and a Prayer Quilt Ministry has been very busy making quilts. Sixteen quilts were sent out this year. As a ministry we not only have the privilege of making these, but we are also on the receiving end, hearing how each quilt has blessed the recipient. As we hear how they have been encouraged through receiving, we are also encouraged.

Thank you to all of you who have faithfully tied knots on the quilts and prayed for people who are hurting.

SCOPE Report (Sending Cards of Prayerful Encouragement) Our group meets from January through October on the fourth Thursday of the month. We pray for those in our church body, community, and others that we know are facing difficulties. Then, we use an assortment of materials to design handmade cards for those who are ill, have lost loved ones, need encouragement, or have other needs. During our October meeting we made Christmas cards to send to International Workers.

We welcome any ladies or teens who are interested to join us.

Fellowship Committee Report The Fellowship Committee serves our church body by coordinating food and hospitality for our fellowship gatherings and outreach events.

In 2016, the Fellowship Committee served in the following areas:

Set-up refreshments for Annual Meeting

Refreshments for Art of Marriage Seminar

Dish to pass dinner accompanying Living Lord’s Supper

We look forward to administering God’s grace in this practical way in the coming year.

Great Commission Women Report God has continued to use women in our church as we grow in the Word, do the work and engage in the world. For the second year, the national theme has been GPS...God’s Positioning System...assisting International Workers to help displaced people. Besides raising money to support this work, this theme has reminded us that God has placed each of us for a purpose to reach people in our sphere of influence. (In other words: "Everyone he places in our path"...sound familiar?)

This year in order to come in contact with more people on our individual paths, we decided to meet in homes and community events for our monthly meetings rather than sit comfortably in our church. This meant visiting several living rooms in surrounding towns, as well as engaging as language partners during VBS, enjoying an evening at Strawberry Fields, reaching out to our second-language community women at their annual International Fashion Show, hosting our International Workers during Missions Conference and discovering and appreciating our church families' talents at our first Christmas craft show to benefit the GPS project. We also engaged in our district events at Delta Lake Camp in Rome, NY and Auburn Holiday Inn retreat. The Connection Cafe, with donations by so many, continues to allow us to form relationships with friends, as well as visitors, and enables us to send financial support to our International Workers. Our annual, church-wide

Auburn Rescue Mission Hot Meal Ministry Report Since November 2014 volunteers from Auburn Alliance have been providing hot meals every first Wednesday of the month to the Auburn Rescue Mission for those in need.

Every month there is a sign-up sheet placed at the Welcome Center for grocery donations. On the designated Wednesday, I arrive at the church to prepare and deliver the meal to the Rescue Mission Transitional Housing office at Malone Village.

Thank you to all who have provided donations to this ministry this past year.

Christian Education Committee Chairman’s Report I am so thankful for the opportunity to serve as the Chairman of the Christian Education Committee. The members are so dedicated to reaching the lost and making Disciples of Christ through Christian Education. Throughout the year we continued to spend a lot of time looking at why we do what we do and making sure that our efforts and activities align with the mission of Auburn Alliance.

I want to thank all of those who have given of their time and energy and participated in Christian Education activities throughout the year. Whether it was Junior Church, Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, Youth Group or Nursery…THANK YOU! Without your willingness to serve, we would be unable to do what we do.

In addition, I want to thank Jessica Kent for her service to the Committee over the years as Service Director. Her knowledge and input has truly been invaluable. Thank you for your commitment to making disciples!

Children Coordinator’s Report The children’s classes and ministries we provide on a weekly basis are pivotal to our church body. Each week we have Sunday School, Nursery and Junior Church volunteers spending time with our children, teaching them about Jesus and our Christian faith so they can grow spiritually. Parents thank our volunteers every week as they pick up their kids, and I want to thank them as well.

Thanks to Jena and Tim Vargason, Michelle Wright, Michele Haga, Jessica Kent, Jenny Haines, June Quigley, Rhonda Delaney, and Tim Kent for their weekly commitment of teaching Sunday School. Also, a big thank you to Mickey Brown, Michele Haga and June Quigley in organizing the summer quarter of guest speakers for our grade-school children so our regular teachers could have a summer break.

Thanks to Paula Koffler, the Junior Church Coordinator, and Lindsay Swab, Nicole Quinn and Jena Vargason, Co-Nursery Coordinators for helping to schedule volunteers and jump in to fill vacancies every Sunday.

Thanks to Kelly Grieco in planning, directing and serving our community through Vacation Bible School this past August. This was Kelly’s 19th VBS!

I would also like to thank Rhonda Delaney in helping me transition to this new position and her dedication to serving many years before me.

During the 2015–2016 Sunday School contest we had 10 winners awarded $100 each for Delta Lake Bible Conference Center: Jake, Mallory, Mickey and Troy Brown, Jesse and Kerri Carlson, Annie & Rhonda Delaney, Bill Schultz and Jacob Wright. Congratulations to all of our participants and winners!

I am so thankful for the opportunity to serve our children and give their parents the chance to have their own time of fellowship with other Christians.

In Christ’s Name, Jeannette Mitchell

Youth Coordinator’s Report As I look back over the last calendar year I am taking time to reflect on a crazy adventure shared with teens called youth ministry. A lot of amazing, but also challenging things happened including taking a group of 45 to Teen Chill in February, Life 2016 in Kansas City, MO, summer slip-n-slide, Friend Night, laser tag and more. There were a couple of things throughout the year that would not have been chosen or even experienced without God's leading, but I can look back now and see the intricate working of God. This happened not only in the lives of teens, but also the leaders involved.

Our main purpose and goal is to connect teens to Christ and also this body of believers. There are several ways we try to accomplish that goal and at times will look different depending on where the student is at in their spiritual walk. As a youth ministry we are looking to provide a three axis approach where students grow in a relationship with Christ, connect with others, and share their faith through the gifts God has given them. We have been moving toward a student led youth night during Sunday evening Youth Group and have recently launched this to allow a place for teens to minister to each other. Staying connected is always a challenge, but thanks to the new social media avenues recently set up for us we are starting to use that tool as most teens use one or more of these tools. I hope you all take time to connect with us through the website, Google calendar, or the social media linked to the youth website, www.aayouth.com, to stay up to date with us.

Thank you for your continued support of not only myself, but the youth leaders, and most importantly, our teens. We have been given this incredible resource of youth to help mold and shape a generation that has incredible potential to reach our world for Christ. We are striving to walk alongside families to encourage that positive growth. Please stay connected as much as possible, and continue with your prayers and support.

College & Career Coordinator’s Report The College and Career group continues to meet on Sunday evenings in room 105. The primary goal of the ministry is to encourage growth in young adult’s relationship with God as they transition into their adult life. In 2016, we covered three major topics of study: Our part in God’s big story using “I Am Not, But I Know I Am” by Louie Giglio, “Epic” by John Eldredge and Sabbath rest using “The Rest of God” by Mark Buchanan as our reference text. The College and Career group also meets Sunday nights after church for a relationship building time. It is another goal of the College and Career ministry to provide a “home base at church” for young adults who go to school or work in the area, as well as students returning home from college. We attended the Passion 2016 conference in Atlanta, GA with two students this year. We are currently launching into the Connection Group study “The Real God” with the rest of the church family.

Our C&C age folks continue to step out in their relationships with God and follow His leading into service for Him, both at home and away. Many of the C&C students serve as teachers and leaders in many programs at AAC and many have served at Delta Lake, Camp of the Woods and have participated in short/medium term missions trips in the past year!

I thank you for your prayer for this age group in our church and for your financial support for those who have needed it to follow God’s leading in their next steps with Him!

Adult Coordinator’s Report In my first year as the adult Sunday School Coordinator, I have had my struggles finding the right topics and the right person to teach each topic. By God’s grace, we were able to offer several classes on several topics with the help of some very capable teachers.

In the spring quarter we offered the following classes: HIS Story - MY Story - a combined group class taught by Pastor Mindek Women with Infants/Toddlers Class studied "Boundaries for Children" by Henry Cloud

In the summer quarter we offered: A study on the book "Sticky Church" by Larry Osborne A study on evangelism A women's class study of the book "Experiencing God’s Peace (Philippians) - Women After God’s Own Heart Series" by Elizabeth George Women with Infants/Toddlers Class continued the above mentioned study

The fall quarter classes were: A study on the importance of prayer A study on the book of Acts A women's study on the book "Your Sacred Yes: Trading Life Draining Obligation for Freedom, Passion, and Joy" by Susie Larson Women with Infants/Toddlers Class began a study on the book "Messy Beautiful Love" by Darlene Schacht

The winter classes offered that are still currently in session are: A study of theological benchmarks A men’s class studying relevant topics to men A women's study on the book "Uninvited: Living Loved When You Feel Less Than, Left Out and Lonely" by Lysa TerKeurst

With the upcoming marriage seminar, it is my desire to follow up with a couple’s class in the spring. It is my hope and prayer that more individuals will take advantage of these and future learning opportunities.

I look forward to having the opportunity to continue serving in this position preparing, teaching, and coaching as we grow together in our church community.

Facilities Team Report The facilities team is a volunteer group from the church responsible for ongoing maintenance, as well as special projects at the main church building and grounds, as well as the parsonage.

As in the previous couple of years, we would like to extend a thank you and special recognition to the group of retired volunteers (Golden Guys) who have given of their time and talents again. This year I understand they took on and completed over 60 projects! Thank you!

One of the larger projects also ongoing and outside the scope of the facilities team is development for the future expansion of the parking lot. Engineering and permitting has been accomplished, trees have been felled and cut up, a road was established to the bottom of the embankment, retaining blocks were placed and filling has begun. Countless hours and plenty of money for that matter have been given without a request for compensation or recognition. If you happen to be aware of someone who has been involved, please thank them. We do!

The basement experienced flooding early in the year. We sincerely thank those who volunteered their time and use of equipment for the clean-up. Other than the typical mowing, snow removal, and salting, as well as approximately 30 repetitive maintenance tasks that are performed by the facilities team, this year one of the larger projects was to clean and resurface the roof on the parsonage. We appreciate the facilities team, as well as those who went above and beyond their assigned responsibilities to help!

As we move into a new calendar year, there are some major projects in the near future, namely a new kitchen area and reconstruction of the adjacent space. Also a new boiler/heating unit in the older portion of the church facility.

Anyone who owns a home realizes the maintenance and/or upgrade issues never end. It is the same with our church facility only multiplied by the sheer square footage, as well as approximately three to four hundred people in and out every week. We truly appreciate all those who unselfishly give of their time and talents to ensure people feel safe, comfortable and welcome when they enter our facilities. Thank you all again!

Missions Committee Report “A voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him. Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill made low. The crooked roads shall become straight, the rough ways smooth. And all people will see God’s salvation. Luke 3:4-6

Our annual Missions Conference was held October 2-9, 2016. Our IW’s for the week were Mark and Kathy Eikost. This was different from any other year as we have never had a couple come and present together. This meant we only heard from one country, but it was easier for our committee to plan for housing, travel and meals.

Throughout the week we heard Mark and Kathy share from their hearts about the people of Bosnia and their work there. We had the opportunity to shop throughout the week at the Bosnian Handcraft Project. These items are made by women from Bosnia. This is how they help support their families.

Thank you to everyone who either came to the different events, or who helped in any way. A special thank you to our committee: for all the hours of planning for the conference, and the work at each event. Thank you to all who gave to the love offering for the Eikosts and to all of you who continually give to the Great Commission Fund. This keeps workers in the field around the world sharing the Good News. Please remember the Eikosts as they will be starting their winter/spring tour to more churches. Also pray, as they wait to see where they will be sent when they go back to the field later this year.

As you look at the budget, the Missions Committee has asked for an increase in funds. This increase not only helps meet expenses for our weeklong conference, but will also be used throughout the year for other missions events. Stay tuned!

Trunk or Treat Report This year our church hosted the 7th annual Trunk or Treat event on October 29, with a follow-up Award Night held on November 13.

We were overwhelmed by the support of the many church members who turned out to volunteer, both prior to, and during the event, as well as an estimated 35 faith and community-based sponsors, who donated candy, supplies, over 80 prizes, and advertising. An approximate 2,500 youth and families attended the Trunk or Treat event, and received the Gospel of John, a youth-friendly gospel comic, information regarding the Alliance, and an invitation to the follow-up night, in addition to candy and game prizes!

Approximately 80-100 youth and family members also attended the Award Night, and were introduced to youth workers and church leadership, received their prizes, participated in an ice cream social, and heard the gospel.

We continue to pray that this event will bear fruit within our community, and look forward to expanding this ministry during the upcoming years.
