Still Needed: Singers for Sodalis, Englewood, and Legacy OaksFrom David Vernon: Since 2004 Cissy and I have done music outreach to long-term health care facilities in our area. We simply go and sing—as music is great therapy—and this is an opportunity to invite folks to join us.

The music at Oak Hill UMC is rich and strong, and over the years many in the church have participated with us. Our activity level waned about three years ago. Then last year after a little body work, (bioprothesis), we began to pick up our pace once again. I do feel an urgen-cy that I didn’t really feel before. I was also blessed with Sarah Jackson, a young cello player in our congregation. Having a high schooler in our group is refreshing and inspiring. We’ve already been pretty active, and we plan to finish the year with a regular visit to Sodalis, two hootenannies at Englewood, and Christmas music at Englewood, Sodalis, and Legacy Oaks. Our visits are sing-a-longs, as we have words to all the music and invite all to sing along. We sing “oldies but goldies” hymns, and at Sodalis Memory Care, this is a good way to reach people (there are some acute cases of dementia and Alzheimer’s here).

If you would like to join us for singing, or to just hold a hand, there is plenty of opportunity. We would love to have you! Current partic-ipants are Sarah Jackson, Amy Jackson, David Vernon, Cissy Vernon, Jan Roberts, Don Kerr, and Debbie Spurlock. Sodalis dates are: Aug. 20, Sept. 17, Oct. 15, Nov. 19, and Dec. 17. Englewood and Legacy Oaks dates will be announced when confirmed.

For more information, and to volunteer, please contact David Vernon at [email protected].

Early Response Training OpportunitiesWhen disasters occur, the United Methodist Church is equipped with a team of volunteers ready to be among the first to help. In order that we actually help rather than get in the way, training is required.

Basic Early Response Training (ERT) is open to folks who have no previous training. This basic course will be offered Saturday, Oct. 7, at First UMC Austin from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. The $30 fee covers cost of training, your badge, an official ERT t-shirt, manual, and a meal.

Advanced training for persons interested in joining the chainsaw team is available at First UMC Boerne on Saturday, Oct. 21. This pro-gram requires completion of Basic ERT training prior to participation. The session runs from 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m. and the cost is $80.

If you have a badge that is not up to date, that means you need to renew your training, which can now be accomplished online at www.riotexas.org. Use this same website to sign up for either of the two training opportunities. You may pay the registration fees for the training opportunities as you register online or when you arrive at the training site for the event.

If you were previously trained, but are not interested in continuing to serve in this ministry, please contact Adam Matustik [email protected] or by phone at (512) 971-3539. You can also use this contact information if you have any questions.

Reconciling CornerAt Annual Conference the Rio Texas Reconciling Ministries Team staged a peaceful protest to the discriminatory language against LGBTQ in the “United Methodist Book of Discipline.” We sang the hymn What Does the Lord Require of You. The second verse says “to seek justice and love kindness and walk humbly with your God.” It’s important to note it says seek justice; not hope for justice or depend on others to bring about justice, rather we are to seek justice.

The Bible has a lot to say about justice. Just a few of the many passages:

• “You must pursue justice alone so that you may live and inherit the land the Lord your God is giving you.” Deuteronomy 16:20• “The godly speak wise words and promote justice.” Psalm 37:30• “Learn to do what is right! Promote justice! Give the oppressed reason to celebrate! Take up the cause of the orphan! Defend

the rights of the widow!” Isaiah 1:17• “This is what the Lord says “Promote justice! Do what is right!” Isaiah 56:1• “Hate what is wrong, love what is right! Promote justice at the city gate!” Amos 5:15v• “He has told you, O man, what is good, and what the Lord really wants from you: He wants you to promote justice, to be

faithful, and to live obediently before your God.” Micah 6:8• “But woe to you Pharisees! You give a tenth of your mint, rue and every herb, yet you neglect justice and love for God!”

Luke 11:42v

Justice means fairness, equity, impartiality. God expects us to work for justice. It takes the actions of those in the oppressing group (yes, that is we Methodists), who after realizing the injustice, work to accomplish change. And it is not an excuse to say we personally don’t oppress so we don’t need to do anything. Not seeking change for injustice is the same as condoning it. As executive coach Sara Caputo says, “If you permit it, you promote it.” Martin Luther King stated, “In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemy but the silence of our friends.”

— In the fight for women’s right to vote it took men to join to bring about change.— In the civil rights movement it took white Americans to join to bring about change.— The Reconciling Movement in the United Methodist Church requires all justice seeking Methodists to call for the discriminating

language in our “Book of Discipline” be removed.

In the immortal words of Mahatma Gandhi, “Be the change you want to see in the world.”

Will you stand with us to tell the Methodist Church to be just?

It’s time.

UMW Wednesday Morning Study Group Begins Sept. 13All are welcome! The United Methodist Women (UMW) will resume Wednesday morning studies Sept. 13 at 10 a.m. in Room 206 of the Adult Education Building. The first study is “The Wesley Challenge” with Jeannine Inbody leading, and it will continue through Sept. 20 and 27.

“The Wesley Challenge” is about going beyond words to develop the spiritual habits, practices, and actions that can lead toward a thriv-ing Christian life. Using the 21 questions developed by John and Charles Wesley, you’ll be challenged to work with one question a day for 21 days. For each question you’ll receive a few practical ideas to help you develop a healthy, sustainable rhythm of faithful Christian living.

With fast-paced emphasis on graphics and short content bits, “The Wesley Challenge” will inspire us to a new kind of commitment—one that is more authentic, vulnerable, and soul shaping, resulting in a renewed passion to discover deeper levels of commitment to God and others.

If you would like to participate, and would like to order a book, please contact Gail Jones at [email protected] or call her at (512) 906-0790. Cost of the book is $10,and the deadline to order is Sept. 3.
