The torch, a gold colouredaluminium frame decoratedwith the London 2012 logo, was designed by EdwardBarber and Jay Osgerby. Itweighs 800g and has threesides representing the threeOlympics held in London in1908, 1948 and 2012. Itcontains 8,000 holesrepresenting the 8,000torchbearers – 110 peopleeach day – who will take partin the Olympic Torch Relay.

The relay route is expectedto come within one hour ofevery person living within theUK and Ireland, and will startat Land’s End next May. Thefinal leg of the relay is usuallyundertaken by a sportinggreat, and is likely to beperformed by five timesOlympic gold medal rower SirSteve Redgrave in 2012.

Sebastian Coe, chair of the

London OrganisingCommittee of the OlympicGames and ParalympicGames (LOCOG), said: “Thetorch that carries the OlympicFlame during the OlympicTorch Relay is one of themost recognisable andsignificant symbols of anOlympic Games. Members ofthe public right across the UKare busy nominating inspiringpeople to be torchbearers, and I am thrilled we have abeautifully designed, engineered and crafted torchfor them to carry.”

The Olympic Torchdesigners worked withBasildon based engineeringcompany Tecosim andCoventry based manufacturerThe Premier Group to developthe prototypes. Massproduction of the torches willstart later this year.

Edward Barber and JayOsgerby said: “Ever since wewere young, we have lovedthe Olympic Games. Asdesigners, this is quite simplythe best project going – todesign an icon for the games. We’ve wanted to be involved

since July 2005 when wewere celebrating winning thebid with the rest of the UK.

“We have worked hard todevelop a torch thatcelebrates the relay andreflects the passion forLondon and the OlympicGames. We wanted to makethe most of pioneeringproduction technologies andto demonstrate the industrialexcellence available in theUK – it’s a torch for our time. This is our opportunity to

represent the UK in designterms, and we are incrediblyproud to be doing so.”

The torch is made up of fourkey pieces – an inner and anouter aluminium alloy skinperforated by 8,000 circles thatare held in place by a cast toppiece and base. The circlesallow the burner system thatwill keep the Olympic Flamealive to be seen and helpensure heat is quicklydissipated without beingconducted down the handle.

undoubtedly very demanding, both in terms of tight timelinesand the very absolute necessityof not disrupting production, andon both counts we’re delightedto say that Flogas has delivered. We are delighted with the newsystem and the service we havereceived from Flogas. We haveno doubt that the new tanks willenable our operations to runmore effectively and efficiently.”

Lobbying from UKLPG and itsmembers has seen theextension of EN12493 (Annex C)of the Carriage of DangerousGoods & Use of TransportablePressure Equipment Regulations2009 (CDG) until 2013.

Amendments to the EuropeanAgreement Concerning theCarriage of Dangerous Goodsby Road (ADR) could potentiallyhave seen lpg road tankersdesigned to ADR requirementsthrough CDG, making themheavier and reducing payloads, resulting in additional journeys.

Jeff Watson, technicalmanager at UKLPG, said: “Thechange could have had anumber of consequences thatwould go against governmentpolicy, particularly by increasingthe environmental impact androad traffic.”

Roger Adams of LakelandTankers Ltd, a member ofUKLPG’s technical management

committee, which was taskedwith achieving the extension, said: “The fact that thelegislators have reconsideredtheir position on tanker designcodes illustrates what can beachieved through the joint effortsof the UKLPG, lpg companiesand tanker manufacturers inpresenting a unified case and inmaintaining our currentstandards. This is a situation ofwhich we can feel justifiablyproud.”

Rob Shuttleworth, chiefexecutive of UKLPG, said: “Thisis good news for theenvironment and our industry, asmillions of pounds ofunnecessary costs will beavoided. This has involved a lotof hard work for the association, its members and officials. Wewould like to thank everyone fortheir active support on thismatter and, in particular, JeffWatson, John Williams and Paul

Blacklock for their persistence inputting our case to civil servantsand politicians.”

The amendments to ADR alsoinclude changes to theconditions under which lpgcylinders can be retested every15 years. Currently, theDepartment for Transport (DfT)grants retest intervals at itsdiscretion. The change will bedeferred until 2015, when DfTwill grant formal permission for15 year retesting for each batchof cylinders.

Jeff Watson said: “In thecurrent climate, DfT do not wantextra work and we will seek tofind a mechanism that fits boththeir duties and our industry’sneeds.

“Looking further ahead, therewill be a change in the 2013ADR relating to the definition oflpg. UKLPG is already indialogue with DfT on how thismay be managed.”

“The key to its cookingcapabilities lies in the patentedfunnel inside the kettle, whichcan be placed in the ‘volcano’position to use for grilling directlyat very high temperatures, orturned the other way to cook orroast food indirectly and evenly, similar to cooking in an oven –with the lid on, you don’t evenneed to keep turning your food! This means that consumers canhave more control over the waythey cook – everything fromsausages to a gourmet meal.

“The funnel also makescleaning easier, as it directs allthe excess fat and juices outsidethe barbecue and into acollector located below thebowl. Simply brush away anyleftovers from the funnels. Anydeposits then fall into the

collecting pan below for easydisposal.”

A MATTEROF TASTEEarlier this year, barbecue supplier Outbackwas taken over by shareholder China-basedTPA. After his first 100 days at the helm ofOutback UK, chief executive Mark Osbornesays he is confident the company will continueto build on its success to date.

In spite of a difficult economy thatcertainly adds challenges foreveryone in the lifestylemarketplace, I’ve been pleasedwith the trade response to thetraditionally high seasonaldemand for the Outbackbarbecue range this year. Goodweather in early summer saw anearlier than usual peak toconsumer demand and ourproducts were flying off theshelves as early as April and May.

This impressed the chairmanand directors of Outback’s newowners and Chinese suppliersTPA Metals & Machinery, whocalled in at our Coventryheadquarters during a Europeanvisit from Shenzhen. We shareour Coventry base with UnipartLeisure & Marine, new partnersfor Outback and TPAEngineering since the takeover,

who now provide theirdistribution and storageexpertise as an added companystrength, allowing the sales andmarketing side of our businessto focus on growing our brands.

Previously a family ownedbusiness started in 1979,Outback was purchased inMarch this year by majorityshareholder TPA. TPA is aleading global manufacturer inthe lpg industy for domestic andcommercial appliances, withCalor, Shell and BP among itscustomers, as well as aworldwide reputation andmarket for its barbecues, keygas and valve regulators, cylinders, heaters and camperappliances.

Since then, Outback UK hasunderlined its commitment to aquality portfolio with two new

products for 2012, award-winning tributes, and a catchybarbecue marketing theme basedon ‘It’s simply a matter of taste’.

We unveiled the new CometSear Gas model, which featuresthe latest barbecuecookingtechnique with itsown high-speedsear burner, andthe Plancha Gas series withits continental-style cast ironcooking plate, at the Solexexhibition at Telford in July, and were delighted with thepositive response from tradebuyers visiting our stand. Wealso launched our 2012 newlook full colour Outbacktrade brochure at the showto reinforce the tasty benefitsavailable to both trade andconsumers looking ahead tonext year.

In today’s highly competitiveoutdoor leisure marketplace,Outback executives weredelighted when a selection of itsbarbecues scooped premiumplaces in recent independentsurveys carried out by consumerwatchdog Which? and lifestyleeditors on the Mail On Sundaynewspaper. Expert testers wereinvited by Which? to sample 22barbecues from across thesupply chain, and they ratedthree Outback models as BestBuys, while the Mail OnSunday’s survey panel awardedOutback its only five-staraccolade.

The Outback Spectrum 3Burner Hooded gas barbecue, the Excel 300 gas barbecue andthe Omega 200 charcoalbarbecue were singled out byWhich?, while the Mail OnSunday selected the OutbackGas Meteor as its only five-starlifestyle buy, with a four-starrating for the Omega 200.

I think it’s true to say that, whilethere are chilly economic timesahead, Outback is more thancapable of adding some heat intothe barbecue marketplace, andproving that, for us, it’s simply amatter of taste.Contact Outback UK on02476 466461www.outbackbarbecues.com

EASTERNGROWTHFollowing on from the AEGPL Congress, hosted by Bucharest in Romania in June, Ion Andronache, CEO of Romanian companySyscom18, gives an overview of the automotivelpg market in south eastern Europe.

New European environmentallegislation and the growth oflocal lpg markets havepresented lp gas operators inEastern Europe withunparalleled opportunitiesrecently.

In Romania, the lpg market, including cylinders, autogas andbulk, is estimated at around440,000 tonnes annually. In2009, cylinders made up almosthalf of the Romanian lpg marketbut, by 2010, autogas hadgrown by 10 per cent on theprevious year to dominate themarket with a share of about 45per cent.

According to ARGPL, theRomanian lp gas association, almost 200,000 tonnes ofautogas were traded fromaround 1,200 lpg outlets inRomania in 2010. Romania hasfollowed the European trendconcerning lpg in that the fuel isintensely promoted as a viablealternative to traditional fuels, both through legislation and byvehicles manufacturers, whichdeliver cars with factory fittedconversions.

The lpg sector is growing Inneighbouring countries as well.Although Serbia remains an

import oriented market, theshare of big players in theautogas retail market hasincreased. Since 2007, the stateenergy authority has issuedenergy licences for all lpgactivities, including wholesale, storage and retail. The minimumlpg storage capacity in onedepot is 1,000m3, but aminimum of 3,000m3 is requiredfor an energy licence for tradingand production.

Autogas makes up 78 percent of the lpg market in Serbia, equivalent to around 320,000tonnes. There are around500,000 autogas vehicles, about a quarter of the cars onthe road in the country, andmore than 650 lpg refuellingstations. In the last couple of

years, companies like OMV,EKO Hellenic, MOL, Lukoil, MBGas and Eurogas haveestablished their own networks.

In Bulgaria, autogasrepresents about 90 per cent ofthe entire lpg market. Retailchains, such as Lukoil, OMV,Shell, Eko, Petrol andRompetrol, represent more than60 per cent of the autogasmarket, and independent sitesmake up the other 40 per cent.Autogas is very popular withcommercial users in Bulgaria, as90 per cent of minibuses andtaxicabs run on the fuel.

It is clear that theconsumption of lpg will grow inthe coming years. Therefore, it isimportant for lpg dealers toexpand supply, but at the sametime provide services safely and

reduce the risk of gas leaks thatcan occur when systems are notinspected properly.

Syscom18 is a national leaderin the process control andautomation market and providesfiscal metering systems for lpgapplications. Over the last fiveyears, I have seen a real increasein the local lpg market, reflectedin new orders placed. One of thelatest projects we’ve completedis a warehouse automationsystem at ButanGas, one of thelargest lpg distributors in Europe.

The international lpg industryhas expanded rapidly over thepast decade and undergonemany profound changes.Utilisation of lpg as a residentialand commercial fuel has grownin many developing countries, such as Romania.

As long as lp gas companiescontinue to increase production, turnkey automation serviceproviders will expand theirservices to meet demand, including upgrades andmodernisation solutions toimprove the performance andextend the life of existing assets. Contact Syscom18 on +40 213 102678www.syscom.ro

LP GAS MAGAZINE AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 201120

AUTOGAS CONVERSION EQUIPMENT

LIQUIDILLUMINATIONIn September, Prins will launch its new DirectLiqui Max liquid injection lpg conversion kit, the first system to deliver liquid lpg throughpetrol injectors.

Prins Autogas UK Ltd hasannounced two new autogasconversion products – the DirectLiqui Max, a new liquid injectionsystem, and the Prins VSI2, whichreplaces its universal system.

The VSI2’s ECU is now twiceas powerful at 32 bits, has theRPM and emulators built in, andcomes with a three yearunlimited mileage warranty.

Will Putter, commercialdirector at Prins Autogas UKLtd, said: “The VSI2 is stilluniversal. There are many newfeatures in the software, likebeing able to take real timescreenshots of any faults thatoccur to the car, which makes itvery easy to diagnose theproblem accurately and quickly.

“We can turn the lpg injectorson and off one at a time, or wecan turn the lpg system off aftera set amount of hours driven, meaning the customer will needto keep to specific servicingschedules or incur higher fuelcosts and drive the car onpetrol. The driver never has totouch the switch anymore as,when the car changes topetrol after running out of

autogas, they can fill the car upwith lpg and the system willautomatically change backto lpg.

“We also now have a newswitch, which is round, and thedriver can choose from 3,000different colours they would likeit to illuminate. Most peoplematch it to the dashboard lights, and I’m sure some ladies willwant it pink!”

Prins’ new Direct Liqui Maxsystem will be launched inSeptember. A high-pressurepump drives liquid lpg from theautogas tank and injectsit through the car’s petrolinjectors into the cylinders. A listof vehicles the kits willbe available for will also beannounced in September.

Will said: “This is thefirst system that uses the car’spetrol injectors and that has areliable lpg pump. It will alsomean that you can start the caron lpg and, if you keep the tankfull, you will never need to run onpetrol again.

“We say its a mono fuel carwith the most expensive ‘get youback home’ system ever – the

petrol engine. The benefits arethat you can run on cheaper fuelall the time, and it’s designed fordirect injection cars, socustomers can drive the latestcars on lpg. Also, because weuse the petrol injectors and keepthe lpg in a liquid state, the driverwill get a better mpg return thannormal vapour lpg systems.”

Prins Autogas UK recentlymade a deal with Mazda to carryout its aftermarket lpginstallations, and has alreadyconverted vehicles for BP Gas,Calor Gas and Gleaner Oils.

Will said: “Mazda is activelyoffering cars with our systeminstalled to potential customers. We will complete the conversionsas the orders come in.

“We have also partnered witha company called Square 1Leasing. We have been workingwith Andrew Poole at Square 1Leasing for the last couple ofyears, and he has now managedto secure us approval on theMazda product with one of thelargest lenders in the country toenable the cars to be offered oncontract hire at very good rates.”

Square 1 Leasing offers

finance solutions for fleets andhas a panel of twelve lendersoffering contract hire, personalleasing and hire purchase.

Andrew Poole said: “Square 1Leasing set up the trading nameLPG Fleet Solutions when wenoticed a gap in the marketoffering finance options tobusinesses taking dual fuelvehicles. We quickly realised thatthe offering from Prins was thebest product to offer ourcustomers because of the qualityof the product and after salesservice, and Prins’ network ofdealers spread around the UK.

“Square 1 Leasing has nowchosen Prins to convert all thevehicles we sell through thevarious leasing options we offerson lpg. Square 1 has beenworking closely with Prins overthe last few months to secure avery attractive rate for Mazdaproducts on contract hire.Square 1 can also offer verycompetitive rates on othermakes and models of lpgconverted vehicles.”Contact Prins Autogas UKLtd on 02380 446467www.prinsautogasuk.co.uk

BRC (GB) also recentlyintroduced its AutomaticLead Forwarding & Assist(ALFA) scheme, which aimsto directly distribute qualifiedleads to its installer network,as well as support the salesand ordering process.

BRC Takes ALFA Position

Autogas Worldwide Ltdchanged its name to mintLPG inMay this year.

Founder and technicaldirector Edward Davies, whohas 15 years’ experience in thelpg industry, said: “With petrolprices rising and concerns aboutclimate change, our mission topromote the environmental andeconomic benefits of lpg andrunning a dual fuel vehicle isbecoming increasingly relevant. We are full members of UKLPG,which provides a guarantee thatall of our technicians are fullyUKLPG certified, and we also siton UKLPG’s management boardand technical subgroup.”

Based near Newport in Wales, mintLPG is the exclusive stockistof brands, such as Romano,Ultra-Gas, mintXI and AEB, andstocks a range of components.

Edward said: “We havealways worked hard to developstrong relationships with oursuppliers to the extent that wehave been able to co-developboth mechanical and electricalcomponents aimed at UKdriving conditions and vehicles.”

Edward and his team of fourfitters are qualified to install a

range of conversion systems.Ultra-Gas’ Classic system isrecommended for vehicles overfive years old where budget is aconsideration, and mintXI’sUltimate system uses similarmechanical components as theClassic, but its single injectorsallow more accurate fuel controland its electronic control unit(ECU) is more sophisticated. There are three driving modes –economic, normal and sport –and the system is suitable for themajority of vehicles.

The Romano Premium systemis suitable for new, high mileageor high performance vehicles. The ECU, manufactured byAEB, is probably the mostwidely used in the industry.

Edward said: “Safety is alwaysparamount when installing lpgsystems. Particularconsideration is paid to makingsure all installations comply withthe UKLPG Code of Practice 11(CoP11). This, together withattention to detail during thefitting of all components, ensures that the conversionenables the vehicle to performas well as on petrol, if notbetter.”
