In the earliest days of the automobile,
navigating America’s roads was a chaotic
experience, with pedestrians, bicycles, horses & streetcars all competing with motor
vehicles for the right of way. The world’s first electric traffic signal was put into place on
the corner of Euclid Avenue & East 105th Street in Cleveland, Ohio, on August 5, 1914.
Based on a design by James Hoge, who received U.S. patent no. 1,251,666 for his
“Municipal Traffic Control System”, it consisted of four pairs of red & green lights
that served as stop-go indicators, each mounted on a corner post. Wired to a
manually operated switch inside a control booth, the system was configured so that
conflicting signals were impossible. According to an article in The Motorist, published by the Cleveland Automobile Club in August 1914,
“This system is, perhaps, destined to Revolutionize the handling of traffic in
congested city streets & should be seriously considered by traffic committees for
general adoption.”

ACCORDING TO ROLLING STONE MAGAZINE, WHAT SONG IS THE BEST SUMMER SONG OF
ALL TIME?
"Dancing in the Street," Martha & the Vandellas
Summer is the time for dance jams, backyard cookouts, and partying at
the beach. The music industry knows this.
Summer's arrival spawns some of the most sizzling
songs to hit the charts. Rolling Stone Magazine ranked summer hits - from oldies to classic
hip-hop, from indie-rock to hard-core rock 'n roll - of all time. The winner is "Dancing In the Street,"
by Martha & The Vandellas. This song encourages the world to transform into a giant summer block party (with proper social-distancing, of course!). The iconic party-jam lyrics were co-written by
Marvin Gaye. Source: RollingStone.com
August 2nd is Friendship Day! Just like the name sounds, it’s a day to honor and celebrate our friends. In the United States, Friendship Day is celebrated on
the first Sunday in August. Of course one of the best ways to spend any day is to
hang out with friends. Be smart, and stay safe, but good friends can be one of the great joys in life and
Friendship Day is a great time to let your friends know how much they mean to you!

The United States Coast Guard is much
older than many Americans realize. It was
founded on August 4, 1790, by Treasury
Secretary Alexander Hamilton & was known
back then as the Revenue Marine. Hamilton
authorized the construction of ten vessels
known as Revenue Service cutters, which were intended to enforce
the earliest United States tariff laws. In 1915, President Woodrow
Wilson signed an act of Congress into law that
combined the Revenue Marine with another
agency known as the United States Life-Saving
Service with the intent of having a single entity
responsible for maritime law enforcement &
life-saving. The merger was accompanied by
a change of name to the United States
Coast Guard.
