Mother Theresa’s ANYWAY prayer

People are often unreasonable, illogical, and self-centered; forgive them anyway. If you are kind, people may accuse you of

selfish, ulterior motives; be kind anyway. If you are successful, you will win some false friends and true enemies; succeed anyway. If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you; be honest and frank anyway. What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight; build it anyway. If you find serenity and happiness, they may be jealous; be happy anyway. The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow; do good anyway. Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough; give the world the best you’ve got anyway. You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and God; it was never between you and them anyway.

Breathe in Love,

Exhale Peace.

FATHER GERALD KAGGWA

We welcome with joyful hearts our new priest, Father Gerald Kaggwa! He would like us to

call him Father Gerry.

Father Gerry was born in Uganda on October 15th, 1962 to a large and loving family including 4 sisters and 9 brothers. His love of learning led him to studies outside of Uganda

for the greater part of his life—to Kenya, England, Tanzania, Italy, Germany, and the United States. Along the way, Father Gerry

earned higher education degrees in Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies. He also managed to pick up a few languages: Luganda, Italian, Swahili, Spanish, German

(reading) and English. After attending seminary in London, England,

Father Gerry was ordained in 1990. Before coming to the United States, Father Gerry

was both Rector and Principal of a college in Tanzania for 14 years, until 2013.

In Virginia, Father Gerry served as Parochial

Vicar of St. Bridget Church in Richmond. After that much loved job, he was honored to

be named as Pastor for a cluster of three Virginia parishes: St. Catherine of Siena in

Clarksville, St. Paschal Baylon in South Boston, and Church of the Good Shepherd in

South Hill. Like Church of the Visitation, these three parishes are all mission parishes

with many parishioners who are retired. While there, Father Gerry worked very hard

and with great success to raise money for their building campaigns as well as their

Living Our Mission campaigns.

It is our privilege and our joy to have Father Gerald Kaggwa as our new Pastor.

PARISHIONERS IN THE NEWS CONGRATULATIONS!! Becky Nunn, COV parishioner and Vice-Mayor of Kilmarnock, was crowned Ms. Senior Virginia on July 14, 2016 in Falls Church, VA. The Ms. Senior America Pageant searches for "the gracious lady who best exemplifies the dignity, maturity and inner beauty of all senior Americans. "Finalists compete in four categories: interview, philosophy of life, evening gown and talent presentation. For her talent presentation, Ms. Nunn performed Portia's pleading to Brutus from Shakespeare's Julius Caesar. Becky will represent the Commonwealth of Virginia in the National Ms. Senior America Pageant in Atlantic City, NJ October 18 -20, 2016. For more information talk to Becky and see senioramerica.org. KUDOS to our Top Tomato Farmers! Recently, the Southside Sentinel (July 28 edition) featured a great photo and an article about the Tomato Contest winners. COV parishioner Kathy Kauffman won prizes for the biggest tomato as well as for the best plate of three tomatoes. Jim Vajda joined Kathy in taking top honors for the biggest tomato, and he also was a co-winner of the Salsa Challenge. Jerry Suyes, full-time dentist and part-time farmer, took a prize for the best tasting tomato as well as one for the weirdest looking tomato.

PARISHIONER DEATHS As previously noted, we celebrated Beryl O'Connor's

Mass of Resurrection yesterday. We learned last week that former parishioner Tom Dundon passed away two weeks again Wisconsin where he had gone to live after his wife Fern’s death in 2012. Fern and Tom were long

time parishioners of Visitation.

FAITH FORMATION Faith Formation will begin September 18th. If you have any

questions, need to register, or are interested in helping with the program in anyway please see Barbara Hollingsworth.

22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

Seeking humility

Reading I: Sirach 3:17–18, 20, 28–29 (humility)

Reading II: Hebrews 12:18–19, 22–24a (God the judge;

Jesus the mediator)

Gospel: Luke 14:1, 7–14 (a lesson in humility)

Key Passage: Jesus said, “But when you give a banquet,

invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind.

And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay

you, for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the

righteous.” (Luke 14:13–14)

Adult: Has the hunger for status and influence in the

world around you endangered your life as a Christian?

Child: Does it make you a better person to be chosen

first for a team or some other honor? Why or why not?

SCRIPTURE REFLECTION

ENTER

Will there only be a few saved?” This is a hard

question with a hard answer: “Enter by the nar-

row door for many will try and will not suc-

ceed.” The Lord came to save the “nations of every language,” each

and every one of us, but even the Lord relies on our free response to

the offer. So “hold up your limp arms and steady your trembling

knees and smooth out the path you will tread” when following the

lead of our Savior. There is hope—“those now last will be first.” Can

you step out onto the way of the Lord?
