The third instalment in the Call of Juarez series dumps the old

Wild West by the wayside in favour of something a little more... modern. There’s no reason to fret, however: it’s missing the spittoons and stirrups, but it promises to remain faithful to the series by being every bit as wild as it’s always been.

“Drug cartels are the new outlaws,” states the game’s press release. When a Mexican drug cartel bombs a US law enforcement agency, the US government has a bit of a freak out and puts together a special task force to track down this cartel and dispense a bit of much-needed justice. The task force unites a trio of eccentric companions. There’s Ben McCall, a no-nonsense LAPD officer and descendant of Ray McCall from the previous CoJ titles. Eddie Guerra is an obsessive gambler who also happens to be a DEA agent. Finally there’s Kim Evans, street urchin turned FBI agent who’s got some connections in gangland. Each of them has their own skill set and personality. Experience the game’s story alone or cooperatively with friends. Once you’re done with that, engage in frantic online multiplayer with numerous game modes.

EA Sports’ FIFA series has been around for eighteen years, releasing one

core iteration almost every year. With each new release comes updated player rosters, improved visuals and gameplay elements, and better technology driving the beautiful game within. This year’s clockwork release will be no different and, despite FIFA 11’s great reception and matching sales figures, the development team insists that they aren’t resting on their laurels.The most important focal point for development has been expanding on the Personality Plus feature that enabled FIFA 11’s players to behave just like their real-world counterparts. This time round, the entire AI-controlled team will be able to read each individual player’s personalities and respond accordingly. David Rutter, producer on the game up at EA Canada, gives an example.“As an example, a team [will] spot that if Peter Crouch in the area, they can lay a load of high balls onto his head.”They’re also working on improving the fluidity of the game by better integrating set-pieces into the gameplay. For instance, players will be able to perform quick throw-ins and quickly select free-kickers.

It’s been 18 months since Jacinto fell. The Gears have moved to the island

of Vectes, living aboard a converted aircraft carrier called the Raven’s Nest. The COG is no more. The Imulsion that once powered Sera’s cities has had a terrifying effect on some of the Locust, mutating them into a deadly new enemy called the Lambent: foes that threaten the Locust and humanity’s survivors alike.

That’s the plot outline for what is sure to be one of the biggest games of this year. Players once again take control of Marcus Fenix, but occasionally control will switch to other characters throughout the single-player campaign – which will supposedly bring answers to all those burning questions that players have regarding the Gears storyline. Horde mode is seeing vast alterations, rebranding itself as Horde 2.0. It sounds like an exciting mix of tower defense-style strategy with familiar Gears action. Dedicated servers will now power the multiplayer side of things. New game modes, new weapons and new unlocks can all be expected from the multiplayer, which will apparently be a blend of the multiplayer experience from the first and second games.

This third iteration of the popular Uncharted series will once again

see players take on the role of Lara Croft’s male counterpart Nathan Drake. Drake, together with his mentor Victor Sullivan, will travel the world in search of information leading to the legendary lost city Iram of the Pillars.

Drake will, of course, come with a host of new abilities to keep Uncharted 3 in line with the hordes of action-adventure games it manages to trounce. He’ll now be much more adept at hand-to-hand combat, with the ability to grab items from his surrounds and put them to use, such as using beer bottles as a last-minute weapon or pulling the pin from an enemies grenade (naturally still strapped to said enemy) and letting him explode. He’ll also be able to take on multiple enemies at once, performing new finishing moves and even leap down onto his enemy’s head from above.

Thanks to its predecessor’s decent performance in the multiplayer market, Uncharted 3 will also ship with a fully-fledged multiplayer component with multiple game modes (including free-for-all deathmatch) and a persistent ranking system.

Resistance 3’s campaign sees you in control of Joseph Capelli as he makes his dangerous journey from Haven, Oklahoma to New York City. Along the way you’ll discover other survivors fighting to stay alive in the aftermath of the invasion. It’s playable either solo or via two-player local/online co-op, promising to add a plethora of new weapons to the Resistance arsenal, as well as offering fan favourites from the two previous games. Iconic weapons like the Bullseye, Rossmore, Auger and Marksman return, every one of which will be upgradable via the new weapon upgrade system. Fans will be delighted to hear that the much-loved weapon wheel from the original game is making a welcome return.

Expect to battle foes that are smarter and lither thanks to Insomniac’s new “awareness and cinematic traversal technology,” which allows enemies to traverse the environment with greater agility in order to reach you. There’ll be new enemies as well, each one more than willing to take a bite out of your face.

Multiplayer is seeing numerous enhancements, offering progression-based action for up to 16 players – Humans versus Chimera. Each match takes place in locations from around the globe, with many of the maps inspired by fan favourites from the previous titles. Earn points as you play to spend on customisable load outs that’ll let you tailor the experience to match your play style. Each side gets their own unique kill streak rewards, such as the Human’s energy-based riot shield, or the Chimera’s ability to temporarily transform into a powerful Chimeran Ravager. New active abilities include things like deployable bubble shields and the ability to drop ammo for comrades. Selectable passive abilities include the usual stuff like increased clip sizes, fire rate and hip-fire accuracy.

If there’s one thing developer Relic Entertainment knows better than

most other developers out there, it’s Warhammer 40K. The studio has vast experience working with the franchise and licence-holders Games Workshop, so to move their knowledge into a third-person shooter seems like a good idea.

Space Marine will take place on one of the thousands of Forge Worlds throughout the human empire. Players will take on the role of Space Marine Captain Titus, honour-bound to serve the immortal Emperor’s will and safeguard the empire. The ever-present green skin threat has a new goal: to obtain the ancient technology and weaponry that is currently undergoing construction on this Forge World. It’ll be up to Titus and his squad mates to defend the planet from the Ork invaders, but a dark Chaos plot looms behind the entire saga.

As a Space Marine, Titus will have access to an arsenal of Ork-slaying weaponry, both ranged and melee. He’ll gain new weapons and equipment as you progress through the campaign (playable alone or with a co-op partner). The game will also feature an 8v8 competitive multiplayer mode with selectable player classes and weaponry.

It’s a scientific fact that every gamer loves killing zombies, and Techland

is here to give you more than enough opportunity to do just that. Dead Island, unsurprisingly, takes place on an island that’s become overrun with the walking dead. While on holiday in this tropical resort, you’ll stumble into your room to pass out after a night of partying; when you wake up in the morning, you’ll find that the island paradise has gone to hell, and it’s up to you to stay alive and find out what on Earth has caused this.

Dead Island combines first-person combat with role-playing elements. To keep the action as personal as possible, the focus will be on melee combat and interactive environments that will force you have quick reflexes and a keen instinct for survival. The game’s RPG elements mean that your chosen player character (from a roster of four) can gain experience and levels – learning new skills and improving existing ones – to make them more effective at killing and evading the zombie hordes, and helping any other survivors to stay alive long enough for help to arrive.

With the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand on the Horizon, fans of the sport will be eagerly

anticipating the event. Sadly, “Down-Under-And-Then-Some” is a little far for most of us to travel, so this 100% official RWC2011 game might be just what you need, especially if the Springboks perform worse than expected.

You might be a bit confused to read that the publisher of this game is 505 Games and not EA Sports, but don’t worry, the developers, HB Studios, are the same team who brought you the last official Rugby Union title: EA’s Rugby 08 – so you know that your beloved sport is in good hands.

With the formalities cleared up, here’s what you can expect in this new title: First up is the mentality that HB is bringing into the development – they’ve been working very closely with The Rugby Forum to gain a better understanding of just what a rugby fan would want of such a game. Players will now have access to a player editor to create their perfect sports star or edit the roster as they see fit. The game is expected to include all 20 qualifying teams for the RWC, and HB has already secured the exclusive rights to include Ireland, Wales, Scotland, France, England and South Africa, but a rival title scheduled for release later this year could cause some trouble with the licensing of the remaining teams. Regardless, you’ll be able to play as every team in some capacity at least.
