The Parish Council held an Extra Ordinary meeting to discuss the Lifeboat Station construction project. A working party presented to the Council recommendations and a list of requirements to bring the public toilets/facilities up to an acceptable standard. This took into account previous survey reports received, including the report recently commissioned by the Parish Council.Subsequently, further meetings have been held including representatives of Hamble Lifeboat and all agreed that opening of the unisex toilets as soon as possible was the highest priority. Councillor Keith House, leader of the Borough Council, attended a Council meeting to update the Parish Council on the progress of the provision of a library for Hamble. Working with the County Council, the Borough Council has

identified the former Barclays Bank as the most suitable building for a library in Hamble. The Borough Council has had their offer to buy the building accepted but this purchase is subject to contract.

The Council has received planning permission for a new storage building at the College Playing Fields, so that the groundstaff’ s equipment can be centralised to enable more efficiency.

Tony Daniels, Clerk of Denmead Parish Council, gave a presentation to the Parish Council regarding Neighbourhood Plans, which were introduced through the Localism Act 2011. Denmead was a frontrunner Council to produce a Neighbourhood Plan and he shared its experience in undertaking this process.

Denmead is one of only a small number of Parish Councils who have worked through the process to achieve a Neighbourhood Plan and he was happy to offer further advice if required.

The Annual meeting with Sports Representatives that use the Parish Council’s facilities has taken place. Hamble Club Football Club was please to inform the Council that their new facilities at Parish Community Facilities off Hamble Lane are near completion and will be ready for the new football season.

The Council has undertaken its end of financial year internal audit and completed the Annual Return.

The Council has been informed that one of the government oil pipelines through the parish has been formally abandoned as it has been superseded by newer pipelines.

A new information board has been installed at Westfield Common and received many compliments. Unfortunately within days of its installation it was vandalised by being completely covered in spray paint.

It appears this was done by the person who has caused similar graffiti/vandalism in the area including at the Hamble Halt bridge. The board has been cleaned and people are encouraged to view the new board to find out more about Westfield Common. Westfield Common Information Board

On 3rd September, Hampshire Farmers’ Markets will be returning to Hamble’s Foreshore Car Park from 10am to 4pm for the village’s Festival of Food.

“Around 30 of our producers will be setting up shop for the day,” says Alex Handford, business manager at Hampshire Farmers’ Markets (HFM). “At the last event celebrating St George’s Day in April there was a great turnout and everyone said it was a brilliant day out. We’re hoping this means even more people will come along to see us on the 3rd’”

Back in April, it was the first time producer Cupcakes ‘mmm Cookies had attended a Hampshire Farmers’ Market at Hamble and their delicious treats certainly proved too tempting for some. “I’m really looking forward to this September’s festival,” says owner Tracy Burns. “Our cupcakes and cookies are all freshly baked with lots of different flavours for those who love sweet things. I certainly don’t feel like I’m a new member of Hampshire Farmers’ Markets as everyone has been so welcoming and friendly - I can’t wait for lots more markets,” she continues.

Just some of the other Hampshire producers you will find on the day include the award-winning Ambrose Sausages, as well as New House Venison and Game, both of whom will be selling meat perfect for that last minute end-of-summer barbecue. If it’s new plants for your garden you’re after, then make sure you visit Fernlea Nurseries’ stand, or Whinwhistle Nursery and Cutting Garden.

For freshly baked artisan bread, The Flour Stall will have lots of loaves on offer, plus those hooked on seafood will be keen to see what’s available from Catch Isle of Wight and Kerri’s Catch. Plus, as well as cupcakes and cookies, there will be more sweet delights from Fordingbridge Fudge, Michelle Mason Chocolates and cakes from Beceries.

As an addition to the festival, on the quayside there will also be music from St Andrew’s Pipe Band, face painting, JJ’s cider tasting and Bursledon Brickworks will be putting on activities for children. Best of all, parking is free. The village’s pubs and restaurants have produced special menus and will be getting involved with events throughout the day, including The Bugle, who will be offering tastings from their stand on the quayside.

For more information and a ful list of the producers who will be there visit www.hampshirefarmersmarkets.co.uk

FRIeNds CRICket CLUb Friends Cricket Club was formed in 2012, primarily by Hamble resident David Tyrrell. We started with one team in the 4th division of the Hampshire league, but now have a Saturday team, an evening league team and an indoor league team. Both Saturday and evening teams have achieved 3 promotions since 2012. Cricket has played a strong sporting role in Hampshire village life since the 19th century. Hamble certainly had its famous cricketers, including CB Fry, who was the principal of the naval training school, and brought many cricketers to play at Hamble.Friends Cricket Club is keen to recruit and develop cricketers from Hamble residents, as we believe local talent and enthusiasm is essential for the long term future of the club. We would like to hear from anyone who is interested in playing Saturday league cricket (42 overs), evening league cricket (16 overs), indoor league (12 overs), or Sunday friendly cricket. We would also like to hear from Hamble parents who would like their children to be playing cricket.• Friends CC aim to encourage and support the playing of cricket in Hamble• We would like to support local people of all ages, who want to play friendlyand competitive cricket• We hope to continue the strong tradition of Hamble cricket into the future• Friends CC looks forward to hearing from any Hamble residents interested in getting involved with the club. Please contact [email protected] or the Parish Office for more details.

HaMbLe LadIes gROUPOur summer outing took us along to the Bombay Sapphire Distillery which is based on the site of what was once the Laverstock Mill near Whitchurch here in Hampshire.A water-powered mill has stood on this site for more than 1,000 years and Bombay Sapphire state that they are proud to now occupy the site which is steeped in history, tradition and exceptional craftmanship. It is situated alongside the crystal clear River Test and is surrounded by beautiful natural countryside. We were given a guided tour of the distillery which was extremely interesting and we found out that they distill 90,000 litres of gin per day and that every drop of Bombay Sapphire Gin is distilled there. At the end of the tour we were taken to the Mill Bar where we were served with a cocktail of our choice and we were able to sit and relax and enjoy it in the beautiful surroundings.Even if Gin is not your preferred ‘tipple’ I would highly recommend a visit as it is not too far away and it won’t matter if it rains or shines. We didn’t go far for our lunch as we had booked in at the Watership Down public house just down the road where we were warmly welcomed and ate a very delicious meal.Another successful outing so well organised by our secretary Joan Fitzgibbon - well done Joan.amme for the rest of the year is as follows:Our programme for the rest of the year is as follows:9th August Rev Robert Sanday - Chaplain with Deaf People13th September Val Archibald - Walk the Way Camino de Santiago11th October Joanne Burns - Wild Fox Floristry8th November Sandy Foster - Bishop’s Bells Handbells Team13th December Christmas DinnerAll meetings start at 8.00pm are held in the Priory Centre. “we wILL ReMeMbeR tHeM”I would like to take this opportunity of thanking everyone who helped me with the centenary commemoration of the two Great War Battles at Jutland and The Somme.Without their commitment and enthusiasm it would not have been possible to put together such a successful and all-inclusive event worthy of the occasion. We were delighted to see so many people marching down the High Street led by the St Andrew’s Pipe Band. Representatives of the Royal British Legion, The Royal Naval Association, The RAF Association, Warsash Sea Cadets, The Coastguard and The Air Transport Auxiliary attended in number. We were also joined by many members of the yachting and sailing fraternity including the Commodores of the Royal Southern Yacht Club, the RAF Yacht Club and the Hamble River Sailing Club. The Royal Southern Yacht Club also generously provided a free reception for all attendees after the ceremony.Fr Graham Whiting conducted the service with able support from The Mayor of Eastleigh, Cllr Des Scott & the Chairman of the Parish Council, Cllr Simon Hand who each read some poetry linked to the two battles.Charlotte Ralph and Kaya Finch gave two excellent readings on behalf of The Hamble School. Their History teacher Mr Barry Brown also attended along with their families.Solent Sound and Fire Systems Ltd of Hamble provided the PA system which enabled everyone to hear properly.BP Oil UK Ltd as always gave their support to a local Hamble community event. My colleagues, Richard Clarke, Chris Ayres, Steve Uden and Jeanette Symes were on hand to help me set everything up on the day. Finally, our friends in Brass Force provided excellent music throughout and sounded the Last Post and Reveille with great skill and dignity. Please take a little while to view some of the photographs of the event published here.Everybody who attended the commemoration felt that it was a fitting tribute to all those who gave their lives during the two battles. Without doubt the event brought together the entire community from within the village and beyond in commemorating the sacrifices made at sea and on foreign fields all those years ago.

POstCaRds FROM HaMbLeHamble Local History Society

Thursday 8th September, 7.30pm

Society Chairman, Ian Underdown, will be giving a pictorial view of postcards of the village, from the introduction of picture postcards in the early 1900s to the present day.You will be able to find out how the postcards and Hamble have changed during this period and some of the interesting messages written on them. What were people writing on the backs of their postcards 100 years ago?The golden age of postcards was the decade before the First World War and this has given an excellent pictorial record of Hamble during this time. You will be able to view over 150 postcards of Hamble in this presentation and find out something about the history of postcards that have been available in the village. Come along to enjoy the scenes of Hamble over the years of postcard production.New members and visitors are always welcomed to our meetings at the Roy Underdown Pavilion. The cost is £2 a meeting. 2016 RIveR HaMbLe gaMes – aNOtHeR sUCCessFUL eveNt eNjOyed by aLL A committed team of organisers, hundreds of competitors all willing to take part in a fun and friendly community event, plus invaluable support from sponsors, marshals and other volunteers, were undoubtedly the key ingredients for another successful River Hamble Games held on Saturday 18th June. And not to mention how fortunate we were with the weather!

With the results now in, the third bi-annual Games enjoyed a record number of competitors, and by the end of the day we had seen a range of personal bests and record-beating times in all events. A big congratulations to all of our winners, and to the Average Joes who scooped the team award. A full list of results can be viewed at www.RiverHambleGames.com/2016-results.

Memorable highlights from the day include the crabbing competition … with 77 children taking part, we’re surprised there were any crabs left in the River Hamble that hadn’t been caught! The ever-popular Tug ‘o War competitions also drew the crowds, as did the Tae Kwon Do display by Phoenix School of Martial Arts. A lot of people also commented how wonderful the talented Kings School Winchester Student Steel Band were, as they performed two brilliant sets of music from a repertoire of popular songs.

When it came to the all-important medal ceremonies, we were delighted to welcome Ian Walker to the podium. As the skipper from Team Abu Dhabi who won the 2014-5 Volvo Ocean Offshore race, he was a fitting choice to hand out some of the medals. Also handing out medals was Jason Scott, the River Hamble’s Harbour Master and a critical member of the volunteer organising committee.

Thanks again to everyone who competed, sponsored, volunteered and gave up their venues, time and facilities to make this happen. The Games really do showcase the very best of a wonderful river and the communities that live on its shores. We look forward to the next Games in 2018 … watch this space!

legal Problem? ‘ask eric’!eric Robinson Solicitors is challenging the status quo for legal services with a membership scheme that offers quick and easy access to free legal advice.

‘The perception of solicitors is that as soon as we open our mouths or lift a finger, people are parting with their money,’ explains Managing Partner, Catherine Maxfield. ‘I wanted to challenge that by endorsing the same business philosophy as that of retail or trade where people can ask questions, understand their situation and then get a quote for what they might expect to pay for any professional help they need.’

And so ‘Ask Eric’ was born.

The scheme is a free legal advice service for individuals or businesses that gives quick access to specialist lawyers without any charge through the online booking of telephone appointments.

‘I think it is time the legal profession started to do business like all other sectors,’ explains Catherine. ‘Advertising agencies pitch, manufacturers make prototypes and car dealerships will take you for a test drive. ‘Ask Eric’ is our way of showing people that we are both confident and caring enough to introduce exprtise and knowledge without any cost.’
