Directors ReportCAMPING OUT WITH KALYANICongratulations to Mr. Bearfoot, Betty Dillon, Stephanie Westmoreland, Margaret Gilbert, all camp staff, and the amazing volunteers who made camp a WOW experience for more than 1,200 (thats ONE THOUSAND, TWO HUNDRED!!) young people!! We did a quick look, and we believe it has been more than a decade since we have had this many campers.

This was our first year involving a couple of new partner-ships at camp: Special Care and Adoption WrapAround. Special Care is one of our after-school programs at a school for children of all abilities, and WrapAround is a family support group for those who have adopted foster children. Campers and staff alike worked incredibly well with these young men and women to ensure they had a wonderful time. The parents and children were most grateful.

During camp, we also had a National Civilian Com-munity Corp Team with us. Nine young people worked diligently to clean up from last years flood. They moved more than 10,500 pounds of debris; cleaned and graveled our trails; put up more than 600 feet of fence; completed the approaches to the new bridge; excavated a basketball court (we now have two!); cut up literally tons of firewood, moved trees removed from the creek to a central burn pile, and even taught a few environmental classes! Special thanks to City Rescue Mission, Chesapeake Energy, OG&E, Hodges Trucking, Campbells Asphalt, Francis Tuttle, and Franklin Electric for their incredible assistance in making this such a successful partnership.

Speaking of hard work, a group of dedicated volunteers have been working diligently at Camp Cimarron in an effort to resume programming there. Special thanks to those of you who are faithfully showing up for work days at CCas well as our other camp sites!

Lastly, I would like to welcome our newest staff person, Leslie Channell, to Camp Fire and Oklahoma! Leslie will serve as the Area Coordinator and comes to us with a wealth of camping, management, and non-profit experience. Spend just two minutes with her and you will immediately know why we feel so fortunate to have her on board. Leader Training on August 25th will be an excellent time to get acquainted with herplease make her feel at home.

Again, thank you to everyone who endured the triple-digit temperatures to make our summer programs such a phenomenal successwe couldnt do it without you! Looking forward to fall and several new programs in our areas including GOTCHA!WoHeLo,

Kalyani (Blissfully Fortunate, Pamb.)Pam Ballard, Executive [email protected]

Program NewsWELCOME TO CAMP FIRE Hello Members! My name is Leslie Channell and I am excited to be the new Area Coordinator for the Heart of Oklahoma Council. Some leaders Ive met in person and some on the phone but I look forward to spending time with every Leader to discover how I can best serve the Camp Fire USA mission and help each Club and Area thrive.

I have camping in my blood and am a believer in the huge benefits of camping for kids. My mom and aunt were Camp Fire Girls in the 50s (their beads are hanging in my office to inspire me.) My mom and dad met as counselors at sleep-away camp and even worked the summer after they were married as directors. My sister and I attended that camp for years and I went on to work as a counselor, leadership staff and office manager at that and 3 other camps in West Virginia, Connecticut and Texas. Besides camping, my other love is the arts. I have a background in performing arts and was the Director of a non-profit dance school for 10 years in Colorado as well as an Executive Assistant at a non-profit Film and Media Center just north of NYC.

I am thrilled to be joining the Camp Fire USA family and to be a new resident of the great state of Oklahoma!

EXPERIENCED LEADER TRAININGIts that time of year so mark your calendars! Experienced Leader training will be Thursday, August 25 from 6:30pm to 9pm in the Yordi Center. Refresh your memory and get some new ideas for your club members to try this year. Get reacquainted with everyone and meet the new staff. See you August 25!

OKLAHOMA STATE FAIRDon't forget, the deadline for entries for the Oklahoma State Fair is August 15. Contact Helen Mehler at 405-282-7968 or by email at [email protected] for more details.

THANK YOU SO MUCH NCCC TEAM FOR ALL OF YOUR HARD WORK!

HORIZON MEMBER REQUESTHello, my name is Stephanie Harris and I am a junior at Edmond North High School. I am working towards earning my WoHeLo and one of my advocacies is fighting hunger. I am reaching out to my fellow Camp Fire members and friends to help collect food for the Regional Food Bank.

The Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma is the state's largest private hunger relief organization. Their administrative and funding costs are less than 5 percent, so you can be assured that 95 cents of every dollar donated is going to feed the hungry.

I am collecting food donations the month of August from all members of Camp Fire, at the Camp Fire office. I will be taking donations at the Experienced Leader Training on August 25th, and I will be delivering all donations on September 11th. If you wish to help me in this fight for hunger and are unable to make the drive to the Camp Fire office and the leaders meeting, please feel free to contact the Camp Fire office for further information on how to contact me.

For more information you can contact the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma:Phone: 405-972-1111Fax: 405-688-6447E-mail: [email protected]

All donations are greatly appreciated and will help this cause.

Thank you very much,Stephanie Harris, Horizon Member
