Red Ribbon Week is a time devoted to promoting a healthy, drug free future for America. Austin Elementary School has planned activities for the entire week that are designed to create awareness and promote healthy choices among students and our community. These activities include educational messages through morning announcements, as well as a daily theme for our dress at school that correlates with a positive drug free message. Participation in wearing theme clothing is optional, but we are encouraging our students and staff to show their commitment to a drug free lifestyle.

Pre- K & Kindergarten
We are off to a great school year in Pre K & Kinder. In
October we will be working the numbers 0-10, will
compare these numbers, and introduce the nickel.
Parents, you can support this math at home by having
your child count toys at home, and naming coins at the
grocery store.
In reading we are working closely with story books and
nonfiction books. Please read to your child every night
and have your child tell you about what they heard. In
writing we are telling our own stories through personal
narratives. Have your child write a letter to a friend
about an amazing adventure they may have had.
Kindergarten will have a field trip to the zoo October
19th. All information will be sent in your child’s Tuesday
folder.

Our annual Fall Festival is just
around the corner on October
20th 5 pm to 8:30 pm. This year
we will have inflatables, carnival
games, a haunted house and lots
of food. With Hurricane Harvey
causing so much devastation to
our community we have decided
not to have our annual auction.
Carnival tickets will remain the
same and we will raffle off “For
the days” and Queen of the car
rider line. It will be a great event
of fun and games. Hope to see
everyone there.

Second Grade Team This year in 2nd grade, we began implementing Lucy Calkins Reader’s Workshop in conjunction with the reading curriculum. These lessons are designed to build student’s interest in reading and aid in building their reading stamina throughout the year. Please make sure you are reading to your child daily. In math, we are continuing to implement Guided Math. In the month of October, your child will be adding and subtracting up to 20. We will also be working with coins towards the end of the month.
The 2nd grade team
Fantastic First Grade In October we will be establishing great reading
habits during reader’s workshop. We will work
closely with both fiction and nonfiction books.
During writing we will continue to work on our
narratives, and work towards extending our stories.
Our math lessons will focus on place value, and
comparing numbers up to 20.
In Social Studies we will learn about locations,
maps, and globes. Have your child hold the map
next time you are at the zoo. Our science focus will
be learning about different types of energy.
We are looking forward to a fabulous fall with your
student!
The First Grade Team
Fabulous Fourth Grade Welcome to 4th grade! We will start October
with a field trip to Cynthia Woods Pavilion on
October 12th. Please make sure to send in your
permission slips and lunch order. Looking ahead,
please mark your calendars November 2nd. This
will be our music program at Austin Elementary.
This month in language arts we will be working
on expository essays. Our reading will focus on
fiction and poetry. This month in math we will
be adding and subtracting decimals. Have your
student add up the total when eating out at a
restaurant. Towards the end of the month we
will begin our multiplication unit working with 2
numbers by 2. Please continue reviewing
multiplication tables daily.

Third Grade News
This month in 3rd grade we will
focus our reading towards poetry.
Grab your favorite Shel
Silverstien poem and share a
poem with your child. Our 3rd
graders will be writing procedural
pieces and personal essays this
month.
This month we will begin learning
different strategies to add and
subtract. Please make sure to
check your child's Take Home
folder or binder for completed
work. We will also begin learning
our multiplication facts in a
couple of weeks. Please spend a
few minutes a day practicing
facts to build fluency.
The Third Grade Team
Important reminders from the front office:
· Due to limited space, parents are not invited to eat breakfast with students.
· We are teaching our students independence and ask that parents do not walk their students to class.
· If your student is tardy, please park and walk them in to the front office to sign them in.
· Transportation changes need to be made before 2:00 pm. You may send a note or call the front office.
· Students leaving early must be signed out before 2:30 pm.
Music News
Our music department will be taking our fourth graders
to The Fine Arts Day at the Pavilion. It will be on
Thursday October 12th. Fourth grade teachers have
sent out permission slips and details about lunches. If
you have an Austin shirt, please wear it.
Don’t forget to participate in our annual pumpkin
decorating contest. Details will go out school wide in
Tuesday folders. We can’t wait to see what everyone
comes up with.

Library News
The Austin Elementary Book Fair is coming! It will be here
October 16-20, 2017 8:30 am -1:30pm. We will send home
information about what books will be sold. When sending in
money for books please remember to send about $2 extra
for taxes.

La semana del Listón Rojo es tiempo dedicado a promover un futuro saludable libre de drogas para América. La Escuela Primaria Austin ha planeado actividades para toda esa semana con la finalidad de crear conciencia y promover decisiones saludables entre los estudiantes y la comunidad. Estas actividades incluyen mensajes educativos en los avisos matutinos, al igual que un tema diario de vestimenta que se relaciona con el mensaje positivo libre de drogas. El participar con la vestimenta cada día es opcional, aunque estamos alentando a nuestros estudiantes y personal a mostrar su compromiso con un estilo de vida libre de drogas.

Pre-K & Kinder
Hemos tenido un buen comienzo escolar en Pre-K y
Kinder. En octubre trabajaremos con números del 0 al
10, los compararemos e introduciremos el “nickel”.
Padres, ustedes nos pueden apoyar en casa poniendo a
sus hijos a contar juguetes y a nombrar las monedas
En lectura estamos trabajando con libros de cuentos y
libros de no ficción. Favor de leerle a su hijo todas las
noches y pedirle que le diga lo que está escuchando. En
escritura estamos contando nuestras propias historias a
través de narrativa. Ponga a su hijo a escribirle una
carta a algún amigo acerca de una aventura que haya
tenido.
Kinder tendrá su paseo escolar al zoológico el 19 de
octubre. La información será enviada en el folder del
martes.

Nuestro Festival de Otoño Anual
está a la vuelta de la esquina: 20
de octubre. Esta vez tendremos
inflables, variedad de juegos, casa
embrujada y mucha comida.
Debido a la devastación causada
por el huracán Harvey, hemos
decido no tener subasta este año.
Los boletos tendrán el mismo
costo. Habrá rifa de “Directora
por un día”, “Consejero por un
día” y “Reina de la fila”.
Será un gran evento de diversión y
juegos. Esperamos verlos a todos.

Segundo Año Este año en segundo empezamos a implementar el Taller de Lectura de Lucy Calkins conjuntamente con nuestro curriculum regular. Estas lecciones están diseñadas para inculcar en los alumnos el interés por la lectura y en construir lectores de largo aguante. Apóyenos poniendo a su hijo a practicar la lectura en casa todos los días. En matemáticas, seguimos llevando a cabo Matemáticas Guiada. Durante el mes de octubre, su hijo estará sumando y restando hasta el 20. También trabajaremos con las monedas a fin de mes. Equipo de Segundo Año
Fantástico Primer Año En octubre estableceremos grandiosos hábitos de la
lectura durante el Taller de Lectura. Estaremos
trabajando con libros de ficción y no ficción. Durante
escritura seguiremos trabajando en nuestras
narrativas extendiendo nuestras historias. Nuestras
lecciones de matemáticas se enfocarán en el valor
de posición y en comparar números hasta el 20.
En Estudios Sociales aprenderemos acerca de
locaciones, mapas y globos terráqueos. La próxima
vez que vaya al zoológico dele el mapa a su hijo.
Nuestro enfoque en Ciencias será aprender sobre los
diferentes tipos de energía.
¡Estamos deseando tener un fabuloso otoño con su
estudiante!

Fabuloso Cuarto Año ¡Bienvenidos a Cuarto Año! Comenzaremos el mes
de octubre con un paseo escolar al Pabellón
Cynthia Woods el 12 de octubre. Favor de enviar
el permiso firmado y su pedido de almuerzo.
Háganos favor de marcar su calendario el 2 de
noviembre, es el día de nuestro programa musical
aquí en la Primaria Austin.
Este mes en Artes de Lenguaje trabajaremos con
ensayos expositivos. Nuestra lectura se enfocará
en ficción y poesía. En matemáticas, haremos
sumas y restas con decimales. Dígale a su hijo que
calcule el total de la cuenta cuando salgan a
comer. Para finales de mes, empezaremos la
unidad de multiplicación y trabajaremos con 2
dígitos por 2. Favor de repasarle las tablas de
multiplicar diariamente.

Noticias de Tercero
Este mes en tercer año estaremos
enfocados en leer poesía. Tome
su poema favorito de Shel
Silverstien y compártalo con su
hijo. Nuestros alumnos de tercero
estarán escribiendo piezas
procedimentales y ensayos
personales.
En matemáticas, empezaremos a
utilizar diferentes estrategias para
sumar y restar. Favor de revisar
que se complete el trabajo del
folder/carpeta “Para Llevar a
Casa”. En un par de semanas
estaremos aprendiéndonos las
tablas de multiplicar. Practíquelas
diariamente con su hijo para que
adquiera fluidez.

Recordatorios importantes de la oficina:
· Debido a que el espacio es limitado, los padres no están invitados a desayunar con los estudiantes.
· Estamos enseñándoles independencia a nuestros alumnos. Les pedimos a los padres que no los encaminen al salón.
· Si su hijo llega tarde, favor de estacionarse y traerlo a la oficina para registrarlo.
·Los cambios de transportación deben hacerse antes de las 2:00 pm. Puede llamar a la oficina o enviar un recado escrito.
· La salida temprana es antes de las 2:30 pm.
Noticias de Música
El departamento de música llevara a los alumnos de
cuarto año al Día de Bellas Artes en el Pabellón. Esto
será el jueves 12 de octubre. Los maestros ya
mandaron la forma para el permiso y el conteo de
almuerzos. Si tienes una playera de la Primaria Austin,
póntela ese día.
No se les olvide participar en nuestro concurso anual
de Decoración de Calabazas. Los informes y detalles
serán enviados en el folder del martes. ¡Ya queremos
ver las ideas de todos ustedes!

¡Ya viene la Feria del Libro! Sera los días 16 al 20 de
octubre de 8:30 am hasta la 1:30 pm. Les haremos llegar la
información de los libros que estarán vendiéndose.
Acuérdense de agregarle los impuestos a lo que desee
comprar, aproximadamente $2.00
