Fonda San Miguel Estimated Distance: 6.3 miles

2330 W. North Loop Austin, TX +1 (512) 459-4121 Website: http://www.fondasanmiguel.com/

Even though Austin has a serious food reputation, its residents can’t count that many Mexican joints that stand up as the best in the state, or the country. Fonda San Miguel, while now a bit kitschy (having been founded in 1975), does fit the bill, and it anchors the city as its premier Mexican restaurant institution. Opt for the mole poblano or cochinita pibil, and remember, there’s no charge for handmade corn and flour tortillas with entrées. Bring your friends—tables seat up to 20.

Austin, TX 78701 +1 (512) 494-4011 Website:

Peché is distinctly Austin’s 1st absinthe bar where pre prohibition style cocktails are prepared perfectly by our expert bartenders. Our chefs have created one of the best menus in Austin. As an ordained clergyman from One of Those Churches in the Back of a Magazine, Rob Pate can pour you a drink or pronounce you man and wife. Take your pick.

Motivated by an adjective in my review of his restaurant in February 2009, the owner of Péché became a minister. That adjective was ‘evangelical,’ and I used it to describe his powers of persuasion behind the bar.

Asking people in Austin to pick their favorite breakfast taco is like asking about religion—dangerous and divisive—but the morning tacos and tortas from this trailer on South First Street are delectable. (512) 299-2489

Cirkiel opened parkside—the city’s first gastro pub—to much fanfare. The accolades continue on for this sophisticated spot, which is housed in a converted two-story space on East Sixth Street, as they do for Cirkiel’s subsequent ventures: the backspace, a widely popular Neapolitan-style pizzeria, and olive & june, an updated version of family-style Southern Italian dining. Cirkiel’s passion for local and seasonal food extends beyond the scope of his restaurants and has become a driving force behind his notable community engagement.

The Texas State Capitol

1100 Congress Ave Austin, TX 78701 +1 (512) 463-0063 Website:

http://www.tspb.state.tx.us/spb/capitol/texcap.htm

The Texas Capitol is an extraordinary example of late 19th century public architecture and is widely recognized as one of the nation's most distinguished state capitols. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1986 for its "significant contribution to American history." Completed in 1888 as the winning design from a national competition, the Capitol's style is Renaissance Revival, based on the architecture of 15th-century Italy and characterized by classical orders, round arches and symmetrical composition. The structural exterior walls are "sunset red" granite, quarried just 50 miles from the site. Additional structural support is provided by interior masonry walls and cast iron columns and wrought iron beams. The foundation is limestone. Texas paid for the construction not in dollars, but in land: some three million acres in the Texas Panhandle that would later become the famous XIT Ranch. The 1888 Texas Capitol is the largest in gross square footage of all state capitols and is second in total size only to the National Capitol in Washington, D.C. Texas Capitol surpasses the National Capitol in height, rising almost 15 feet above its Washington counterpart.
