Academic Support

Introductory Academic Program (IAP)

The Introductory Academic Program is intended to provide AAS students with a range of skills necessary to make a smooth transition to and enhance performance in their academic programs. The IAP is compulsory for AAS students, and students must arrive prior to its commencement.

The IAP is four weeks in duration and takes place prior to the commencement of your academic program. The first week of the IAP includes some orientation activities to help you settle in to the University and to Adelaide.

Language and learning services

The Writing Centre and the Maths Learning Centre offer individual consultations to assist with all aspects of coursework involving writing and mathematics. All services, seminars and courses are free for students enrolled at the University of Adelaide.

The Australian Government requires all international students and their families to have health insurance in Australia through the Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) scheme. The OSHC helps pay for medical care which you may need when you are studying in Australia.

As an AAS student, your OSHC (Single) cover will be paid by your scholarship. The University’s preferred provider of OSHC is Allianz Global Assistance. When you accept your Placement Offer, the University will arrange an OSHC (Single) membership for you with Allianz. You will receive your OSHC membership card on arrival.

Allianz Global Assistance has staff available on North Terrace campus Monday to Friday 10am-4pm to assist with queries and claims. Other support and advice is also available online allianzassistancehealth.com.au/ en/student-visa-oshc/

If you have dependants on your student visa you will be required to purchase OSHC (Family) membership by paying the difference between a single and family cover.

Students with families

international.adelaide.edu.au/life/studying/children/

If you are planning to bring your family to Australia, you are strongly advised to arrive on your own first for at least the first six months. Once you have settled into your new living and learning environment and have found long-term accommodation, you will be in a better position for your family to join you in Australia.

The Australia Awards Scholarship does not provide any financial or other support for your dependants. If you intend to bring your children to Australia, please be aware that there are costs associated with childcare and schooling in Australia.

Childcare

adelaide.edu.au/childcare/

Quality childcare services are available at the University’s North Terrace and Waite campuses, and at many childcare centres throughout Adelaide. Fees vary from approximately AUD$98 per day to approximately AUD$$485 per week. Students receiving Australian government scholarships (such as AAS) may be eligible for a government subsidy of part of these fees (the Child Care Benefit).

Childcare services generally cater for children between the ages of three months and five years of age.

Kindergartens or preschools located throughout Adelaide and suburbs offer educational programs for children who are four years old. Fees for kindergarten may be from AUD$80 per term (10 weeks).

For children who are attending school, many public primary schools offer afterschool and vacation care for a fee (currently around AUD$10 per hour for after school care and approximately AUD$35 per day for vacation care).

Education for children of international students

South Australia has a range of excellent public and private schools. As a holder of an Australian Government scholarship (an AAS award) your dependant children can attend public schools and pay the same low fees as local students.

School attendance is compulsory for all children in Australia aged between six and sixteen years, with most children commencing school at five years of age. School attendance is from Monday to Friday and generally from 9.00am – 3.30pm. The school academic year commences in late January and the year is divided into four terms.

Schools available to the dependants of international students include State government-operated public schools as well as independent schools.

To be eligible for this, you will need to obtain a document called the “Letter of Authority” from the Department of Education and Child Development (DECD). Once you make a request for this letter through International Student Support to verify your student and scholarship status to DECD, the ISS will facilitate the Letter of Authority for you after your arrival in Australia.

The School Materials and Services Fee is payable each year. This is a fee paid by all parents – local and international. It helps the school to buy exercise books, pens and other personal resources for students. This annual fee is set by the school and ranges from A$110 up to A$920 per child per year depending on the school and level of services offered.

Intensive Primary English Course

If your primary school aged child needs English language instruction, you can enrol them in the Intensive Primary English Course (IPEC), which is an intensive English course designed to provide young children with the skills required for entering mainstream primary education classes. Students usually attend the IPEC Program for one year. They can then continue at the school in the mainstream program or go to their local school if you wish. Similar intensive English language support is also available at secondary school for older dependant children.

For details of primary and secondary schools offering intensive English language support in South Australia contact:

ACCOMMODATIONadelaide.edu.au/accommodation

Adelaide has a wide range of accommodation options including University-managed accommodation, residential colleges, student hostels, private rentals and share-housing. University-managed accommodation and residential colleges offer many advantages, as they are close to campus and offer furnished rooms with the cost of electricity, gas and water all included in the fee.

Students accompanied by family members will find private rental accommodation in houses or apartments is the most suitable option. It is easiest for students to arrive in Adelaide alone initially in order to arrange suitable permanent family accommodation. International students requiring temporary accommodation may be provided one week of single room temporary accommodation upon arrival (a fee applies – approximately A$355 for a single student for one week at the time of printing).

This service is provided by the Accommodation Service and must be arranged before arrival.

“Studying a Master of Education will enhance my teaching skills. I have been able to collaborate with other students with different cultures and have received support from the academic staff. The style of learning known as blended learning has enhanced the learning outcomes.”

M Nural Ikhsan Saleh, Master of Education, Faculty of Arts

“Being enrolled as an HDR student in The University of Adelaide allows me to learn and collaborate with the world class researchers in a professional research environment. The university also provides me with opportunities to develop my skills beyond research, particularly in communication and professional networking. Maintaining a work-life balance can be tricky for a researcher. Fortunately, I have chances to join the university clubs and getting involved in the local community activities, which help me to make new friends and relax. Importantly, I also have a great International Student Support team who assists during my transition to Adelaide and within my study period. Thanks to The Australia Awards, I can have this priceless and incredible journey with The University of Adelaide and Australia.”
