WelcomeWelcome to the Autumn / Winter 2018 edition of our Pulse newsletter, where you can catch up on all the latest news from Nottingham Hospitals Charity and see how your support continues to make a difference to patients at Nottingham’s hospitals.

In this issue you can read about the difference our supporters are making to end of life care at Hayward House (page 4), as well as seeing the latest news about our Children’s Hospital Big Appeal (page 5).

As the festive period approaches, we know it is a time of year when people often think of lost loved ones. On page 11 you can find out how to dedicate a special light of remembrance for your loved ones, which will shine bright throughout the festive season.

As our readers and supporters, we welcome your views on Pulse and on what you’d like to see included in the future – so in this issue we’ve included a reader survey, which you’ll find on the tear-off section of the newsletter. It should only take a few minutes to complete, and anyone who sends their answers and contact details back to us will be put into a prize draw to win a day pass for six people at Center Parcs.

Thank you for your support, and I hope you enjoy reading this issue of Pulse.

Introducing the Hopewood Appeal

Nottingham Hospitals Charity is this year – for the first time – joining forces with Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust to transform services and facilities for children, young people and new mothers with mental health difficulties.

The Hopewood Appeal is supporting the development of a new child and family friendly centre in Nottingham, where mental health services for children, young people and families from across the East Midlands will be housed in one place.

The Hopewood site, which opened in summer 2018, hosts: a perinatal inpatient unit for new and expectant mothers experiencing mental health difficulties, where they can stay together with their babies; a Community CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services) Centre for children and young people; and an adolescent inpatient unit, which will include a new, dedicated area for young people suffering from eating disorders.

Jo was an inpatient at the Adolescent Unit and credits CAMHS for saving her life, after five years of self-harm and an overdose.

If you’d like to support the Hopewood Appeal and help local children, young people and new mothers like Rachael during a difficult time, please use the donation form inside Pulse or visit www.nottinghamhospitalscharity.org.uk to donate online.

How you’re supporting end of life care at Hayward HouseThanks to the support of our fundraisers and donors, we’ve been able to give £600,000 over the last year to help patients with terminal illnesses being cared for at Hayward House.

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we are able to support patients at the centre by providing complementary therapy, to help patients relax and ease their symptoms, and art sessions to help patients express and enjoy themselves. We also fund four nursing posts plus counselling staff to help patients and their families through what can be a very difficult time.

Staff at Hayward House also choose to go the extra mile for their patients by holding regular fundraising events. Nursing and

therapy teams join forces to hold themed fundraising days, and get the whole local community and their patients involved.

Carol Parlor, Day Therapy Sister at Hayward House, said: “We love getting staff, patients and the local community together to have fun and raise money. The difference that charitable funding makes is phenomenal – without it, we wouldn’t be able to fund things like the art sessions or complementary therapies that make such a difference to our patients’ wellbeing.”

Children’s Hospital Big Appeal latest:

the Big iMRI Appeal

Thanks to your support, we are halfway to our fundraising target for a new intra-operative MRI machine at Nottingham Children’s Hospital. The Big iMRI Appeal was launched in March 2018, and thanks to our fundraisers and donors after six months we have raised £600,000 of the £1.2m target for the new iMRI suite.

The new machine will be used during children’s brain surgery, to help surgeons get a clearer picture of the size and location of their patients’ tumours, meaning they are more likely to be able to remove all of the tumour first time.

Paediatric Neurosurgeon, Donald MacArthur, explained: “Using an iMRI during operations is a significant benefit as it can help us completely remove tumours whenever there is the possibility of doing this, as well as limit the impact of surgery on our young patients.”

One-year-old Oliver Swift, from Arnold, Nottingham, was diagnosed with a brain tumour at just five months old. Oliver underwent surgery, performed by Donald MacArthur and his team, and is now undergoing chemotherapy to further shrink his tumour.

Oliver’s mum Charlene said: “Oliver is a very jolly little boy and the doctors are amazed at the recovery he has made. I am very supportive of the Big iMRI Appeal and know that it could help children like Oliver in the future.”

Grant a Christmas wish for a child in hospitalThis Christmas, Nottingham Hospitals Charity is launching a brand new way for you to donate online to Nottingham Children’s Hospital. No child wants to spend Christmas in hospital, but we want to make sure that the festive season at Nottingham Children’s Hospital is as exciting and fun-filled as possible.

By donating to Grant a Christmas Wish this December, you will help the Children’s Hospital team purchase gifts from their wish list. All of the gifts have been selected by experienced Play Specialists at the Children’s Hospital. They have carefully chosen items they know will bring joy and excitement to their patients this Christmas.

You can choose between toys, days out, arts and craft equipment and technology. You can also choose to transform the facilities on a ward by purchasing a bundle of items. No matter which gift you choose, your donation will directly benefit children, young people and babies being treated at the Children’s Hospital, which is based at the Queen’s Medical Centre.

By donating to Grant a Christmas Wish, together we can give poorly children at Nottingham Children’s Hospital a reason to smile this Christmas.

To find out more or grant a wish for a child in hospital this Christmas, please visit www.nottinghamhospitalscharity.org.uk/grant-a-wish from the beginning of December

Make a Will and make a differenceDid you know that you can leave a gift in your Will to your chosen area of Nottingham’s hospitals? No matter how large or small, the gifts we receive through Wills every year make a huge difference to patients at our hospitals.

In November our ‘Make a Will’ Month is returning for a second year, and we’re giving you the opportunity to have your Will written or updated for free! Regardless of whether you choose to leave a gift to Nottingham Hospitals Charity, you can make a free appointment with a participating solicitor to have your Will written or updated.

This service usually costs around £100 to £200 for a single Will or £150 to £300 for a joint Will, but our partner solicitors have agreed to waive this fee – all we ask is for a donation to Nottingham Hospitals Charity in its place. Making a Will doesn’t have to be a daunting or complicated task – it is your opportunity to make sure the people you love are looked after when you’re gone, and to give back to the causes you care about.

Our participating solicitors have a limited number of appointments available, which will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. To receive a ‘Make a Will’ information pack or to book an appointment please call Ellis Keay at the Charity on 0115 962 7905 or email [email protected]

Shine a light for someone special this festive season The festive period is a time when we often think about our loved ones and celebrate their lives, send hope to those going through a difficult time, and remember those who are sadly no longer with us.

This festive season you can celebrate, hope and remember by dedicating a light on one of our Trees of Light at the City Hospital or Queen’s Medical Centre. Your light will shine throughout December for your loved one, family member or friend, and you can view our online tributes page throughout November and December at www.nottinghamhospitalcharity.org.uk

To dedicate a light, please use the form in the enclosed ‘Lights to Celebrate, Hope, Remember’ leaflet. If you do not have a copy of the leaflet, please call us on 0115 962 7905 or email [email protected]
