KINDERGARTEN KG UPDATE

There have been lots of firsts for Kindergarten this year. From their first day of school, first excursion to Oak Vale Farm to their first athletics carnival. Throughout their new experiences we have seen the students develop independence and resilience when attempting new challenges. We have also had the privilege of watching the students transition from starting Kindergarten not knowing how to read and write to now enjoying story books independently and writing little letters to their friends. Students have developed confidence to participate in whole class discussions about a story that we have read

and experiences that we have had. Their favourite experience to talk and write about has been our visits to the Agriculture Farm with Mr Drury. Kindergarten were lucky enough to be involved in National Tree Day where Bunnings generously donated seedlings, pots and soil to all Kindergarten students. How are your plants going? We are so excited and looking forward to the coming weeks and what they hold for us, in particular, our first dance concert in Week 8. We are so proud of the students and how far they have come. What a great start to their schooling journey here at Wadalba Community School!

ABORIGINAL CHILDREN’S DAY

On Tuesday 7th August, the Primary Aboriginal students travelled to Wyong Racecourse with Mrs Fisher and Mrs Fitz.

The students were first introduced to the event with a smoke ceremony which led them to some entertainment. Our Ngara Aboriginal Choir did a wonderful job performing and then the students continued to enjoy watching various schools also perform. These included a school didge group, an Aboriginal dance and some songs which the students joined in with.

There were many highlights from the day, including the opportunity to watch a police helicopter land and take off, having a go at DJing, doing some spin art or sand art, and creating beautiful art works on old vinyl records.

A huge thanks to the families that came along to enjoy the day with their children and to Mrs Malu for organising the excursion for our students. It was a fantastic day out in the sun and there were lots of things to see and do. The students had an absolute blast!

GRANDPARENTS AND FAMILIES DAY

On August 8th, WCS celebrated Grandparents Day and Open Classrooms as a part of Education Week. This is always a big event on the calendar and this year’s activities did not disappoint. At our Grandparents Day assembly we had lots of guests and 8 entertaining performances. We had 4 from our high school students and another 4 from primary. They ranged from drama acts to singing and speeches. All of us were so entertained and the performers did a fantastic job.

At the Book Fair there were lots of books, posters and other little gadgets. The book fair was a great way to fundraise money for our school library so that we have access to a huge range of books. It was also a great way to try Xylia Grover way to get the things you want like she mentioned in her speech.

At the farm the sausage sizzle was very yummy. Though the line was long, it was well worth the wait. Who doesn’t love a free snag?

At our primary cupcake stall, our stage three students and the lovely Miss Hindmarch made a range of cupcakes, jelly cups and much more. This year we raised over $500! The cupcake stall was a huge success and we sold every single thing that was donated. Lucky grandparents like buying treats to spoil their grandchildren!

The one thing the grandparents and family loved the most was the open classrooms. The open classrooms were a hit with the all involved. In 5/6H the families played Kahoot and the families were more competitive than the kids! All up the grandparents, family and students had the best day and we consider ourselves very lucky to be able to share so much with our families.

SPELLING BEE

Over the past few weeks our students from Years 3-6 participated in the Premier’s Spelling Bee, run annually by the DoE Arts Unit. Each class had a spelling bee where students had to correctly spell a random word from the official list created each year by the Macquarie Dictionary team. Each class put forward their 6 strongest competitors for the Stage 2 and Stage 3 finals. These finals were completed this week and the following students were successful in qualifying for the regional final to be held at Peats Ridge Public School on Friday 14th September.

READING TOGETHER

TECH TEAM UPDATE

Thank you to all parents that came along to our Reading Together session on Tuesday. We discussed tips and strategies to help your child become a successful reader. We are running a second workshop on Tuesday 21st August from 1.30-2.30pm in K/1G’s room. Please come along if you are interested in learning more about reading and ways that you can help your child at home.

Ms Goldie and Mrs Farrelly

The students from our fantastic Primary Tech Team have been meeting regularly with Mr McNeill throughout Term 2 and Term 3 to organise themselves to look after technology related jobs within the school. So far our Tech Team have taken over the job of setting up and running the audio-visual equipment for Primary assemblies, and created a roster to make sure a Tech Team member checks and plugs in our set of 30 iPads each afternoon.

Last week they began learning to use our new Sphero robots in order to be able to support other students and teachers in using the new resource in their classroom. The first step was just learning to drive the robots, using an iPad app. The next step involves learning to code the robots using visual programming in order to navigate them around a course. Later this term the Tech Team will begin more involved lessons in visual programming (coding).

NED SHOW

On Wednesday 8th August the NED Show visited Wadalba Community School to share a special message with the help of a classic yo-yo. The 45-minute assembly promoted positive attitudes and encouraged students and staff to do their best every day!

N stands for ‘Never Give Up!’

E stands for ‘Encourage Others!’

D stands for ‘Do Your Best!’

The NED Show visits 2 million schools every year across the UK, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and Canada at no cost, because a school before ours participated in the Pay-It-Forward sale. The students of WCS raised $1119 by purchasing the Ned Yo, Boomerang and Excelerator yo-yos, making it possible for the NED Show to visit the next school. Congratulations students on a job well done!

Please join us for our Book Character/Theme Parade on Thursday morning 23rd August, outside the primary hall. It will commence at 8.45 after roll call. Students are encouraged to either dress as a book character or to think creatively and come representing a book. There is no need to buy expensive costumes. See what bits and pieces you already have at home. The theme this year is, “FIND YOUR TREASURE” and we want the students to know they can find their treasure in BOOKS!

BOOK FAIR REPORT

During Weeks 2 and 3 this term our Primary Library was the venue for a Scholastic Book Fair. Each year we run this fair because a certain percentage of sales comes back to our school in the form of points, thus enabling Mrs Crowther to buy new books for the library throughout the coming year.

Students first viewed the merchandise and younger students were assisted by senior primary students to fill out their ‘wish lists’ that they took home to discuss with their parents and carers. It was lovely to see the older students interacting with the younger ones and then reading them a story before the end of the lesson.

Thank you to staff who assisted with sales on Grandparents’ Day and thank you to Mrs Hanlon, with a special thanks going to Mrs McLelland who took over the financial side of things when Mrs Hanlon took ill.

Your support as parents and grandparents means so much to us and your financial contribution to our success in raising funds for our library helps to increase reading options for our students and to improve their reading and writing skills.

We sold over $4000 in stock which means we receive 30% back in rewards points.

This is great news for our library and our students. Thank you to all who bought from us.

Kerry Crowther (Primary Teacher Librarian)

ATHLETICS CARNIVAL

Our school Athletics Carnival this year proved to be another big success on our sporting calendar. For the second year we used the track and field facilities at Warnervale Oval. These facilities provide correct lanes and field event areas for the students to use. Almost all students from Kindergarten to Year 6 competed in their age races and events which was fantastic to see. Sportsmanship and having a go are positive traits that benefit students for the rest of their lives. K-2 also enjoyed the novelty events after their age races.

A big thank you to Katy Bryant and Rose Miller for ordering and organising the pizza lunch and also to the ladies that provided assistance in handing them all out on the day.

For students who placed 1st and 2nd in their events (some events were timed finals) they now will compete at our zone carnival at Mingara on Thursday 30th August. All permission notes have been handed out to those students.

PSSA PRIMARY BOYS HOCKEY UPDATEOn Monday the 13th August, our very eager Primary PSSA Boys hockey team geared up for what was going to be a very exhausting day at the Wyong Hockey Complex.

At 9:30am, the team were on the field looking very serious in their warm-up. As they waited for the goalie to gear up, they stretched, gave each other pep-talks and were ready to give it their all in their game against Tuggerah PS.

In the first half of the game, Wadalba were up 2-0 but during the second half, the team came together playing even stronger and by the end were ahead with a score of 7-0!

Smiles across their faces and looking a little tired, the team knew they were not finished yet! Soon they would be versing Loftus PS from Sydney and it was only a matter of time until they were on their way through the gates and on the field ready to play.

At 12pm, Loftus PS were ready to put WCS to the test! With some great tackling and trapping on both teams, our team were feeling the challenge. However, by the end of the game, Wadalba had yet another victory with a score of 5-2.

Our team have now progressed to the quarter finals which will involve a road trip to verse the winners of North Coast. A huge congratulations to all the students for making it this far!

Thank you to the families that came to cheer on the team and for helping with gearing up the goalie. Another huge thanks to Janelle Swift for assisting with locking up, and to our umpires, Bailey Moore, Zac Follington and Jack Finnerty who all did a fantastic job!

Well done team!!!
