Where In TheWorld Were You?As Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee rapidly approaches, celebrating awonderful 60 years on the throne, it gives us a chance to think about the pastand where we were during her reign as queen.

How about in 1952 when the young Elizabeth came to the throne? How many of us werearound at that time, so soon after the Second World War, watching the Flowerpot Men onour black and white televisions and cheering on Newcastle United’s fifth FA Cup win.

Where were you 25 years later in 1977 when Red Rum won the Grand National for thethird time and Abba and the Bee Gees dominated the pop scene? And where will you beon Monday 4th June 2012 as the Diamond Jubilee celebrations take place?

Hopefully, in years to come, you will remember the great time you had at the Grange inEarls Barton taking part in the Big Jubilee Lunch, using your smart phone to check thelatest Facebook entries, wondering how on earth Chelsea had managed to overcomeBayern Munich in the Champions League final.

Whilst we are on the subject of ‘Where In The World Are You,’ we continue to be amazedby the multitude of photos we receive from our readers, showing them reading BartonToday all over the world. The response has been so great this month, that we havededicated a double page spread to this topic. To increase the challenge, we are also askingyou if you can get any photos of famous people reading the magazine. Welook forward to your responses.

Elsewhere in this month’s edition ofBarton Today, the spotlight shines on thebusy life of councillor GeorgeBlackwell, we hear about EarlsBarton under 14’s football teamwinning the County CupCompetition, we are remindedof the upcoming Festival andCarnival and Barton Boobiesreveal all about their 26 mile walkthrough the streets of London.

We hope you enjoy the read and that you willhave a Diamond Jubilee to remember.

Summer Solstice - June 20th

Sol + stice derives from a combination of Latin words meaning "sun" + "to stand still." Asthe days lengthen, the sun rises higher and higher until it seems to stand still in the sky.

As a major celestial event, the Summer Solstice results in the longest day and the shortestnight of the year. The Northern Hemisphere celebrates in June, but the people on theSouthern half of the earth have their longest summer day in December.

Perhaps the most enduring modern ties with Summer Solstice were the Druids' celebrationof the day as the "wedding of Heaven and Earth", resulting in the present day belief of a"lucky" wedding in June.

Today, the day is still celebrated around the world - most notably in England at Stonehengeand Avebury, where thousands gather to welcome the sunrise on the Summer Solstice.Pagan spirit gatherings or festivals are also common in June, when groups assemble tolight a sacred fire, and stay up all night to welcome the dawn.

Pagans called the Midsummer moon the "Honey Moon" for the mead made fromfermented honey that was part of wedding ceremonies performed at the Summer Solstice.

Gary the Guide Dog walks Hadrians Wall.Gary has completed his walk along Hadrians Wall. He enjoyed it verymuch, and was fortunate with the weather. So far he has raised over£1000, there is still time to make a donation atwww.justgiving.com/gary-hornewalkinghadrianswall A young ladnamed Oliver, who goes to EBJS met us at swimming lessons atWeston Favell during half term, and he was so taken by Pepsi andinterested in Guide Dogs, that he insisted on giving his £5 pocket moneyto Guide Dogs. We were so very touched by this, what a generouschild. He has a younger brother and sister, and she was very wary ofdogs, but on seeing Pepsi everymorning, she was happily strokingher on the last 2 days . We wonder ifshe has persuaded "Mum" to have adog yet.

On May 10th, Pepsi went intotraining. It was quite sad for us andour family, as she has found a veryspecial place in our hearts. Soperhaps you can all keep your fingerscrossed that she will do really well inthe next part of her training tobecome a Guide Dog. She definitelyseemed ready for this next stage.

A few hours later that day, we gotAnnie. She is 13 months old. Thereason we were asked to take her onfor the next month is because herPuppy Walker Gillian took her to bespayed, and on being shaved readyfor her Op, her vet found that she was in phantom pregnancy. As aresult, her spaying had to be delayed. Unfortunately, Gillian was due toemigrate on May 13th, by which time Annie should have been intraining. So we were asked to have her, see her through the Op, andfull recovery. Then she too will go on to the next stage of training.

Hopefully we will soon hear of who our next pup will be. Watch thisspace... It will be a very long wait for us and Skye.

The men’s section of Earls Barton BowlingClub departed The Square at 0800 onThursday 3 May for their annual bowls tour –destination Bristol. Dressed in their clubblazers and ties they all looked very smart andprofessional – whether their bowling wouldbe the same remained to be seen!

Of course it was raining as we left andcontinued to drizzle on the way down but theatmosphere inside the bus was one ofexcitement and the usual banter. We arrivedat the Bristol Hotel at lunch time andfollowing a team talk in a local hostelry wemade our way to our first fixture in Bath. Wewere warmly welcomed by the President andCaptain of The Alexandra Bowling Club anddespite the cold and wind the rain kept awayand the match of 6 rinks (4 a side) took place. With Jimmy Johnson acting as coach, supporter and chief photographer we werekept up to date on how the match wasprogressing And at the half way stage EarlsBarton were losing, however after the breakthe bowlers of Earls Barton came good andsecured a close 96-91 victory. Mention has tobe made of Rink 5 consisting of Ray Wake,Brian Groves, Tim Hart and Michael Griffinwho scored a maximum 8 (“Hot Shot”) onone end – well done indeed!

Following the after match speeches wemade our way back to the hotel for dinner andanother team and selection talk in varioushostelries in Bristol.

Day two (Friday) the bowlers had the morningoff to enjoy the city of Bristol and thenfollowing another team talk al lunchtimewhere we met up with Ian Deamer (once ofEarls Barton and now living in Plymouth), weboarded the coach for Clevedon. Anotherwarm welcome from the members of theClevedon Promenade Bowling Club ensureda fun day and with the weather once againholding out we started the match with Ianplaying as a guest bowler. Once againthe bowlers from Earls Barton bowledexceptionally well and gained another victory, this time the score was 131-98 with rink 3taking the prize of best winning rink. Welldone to Alex Ellis, Arnold Orton, Trevor Laneand Terry Williams.

Most bowlers conscious of the match on thefinal day and feeling tired after two days ofbowling had an early night – however somedid not!!

On the Saturday we travelled to Weston-Super-Mare arriving in plenty of time to enjoythe fruits of a seaside town and a light lunchbefore moving on to the Ashcombe BowlingClub. This time we only had 5 rinks asDenny’s Tours – an event that happens oneach tour was underway to the CheddarGorge. The members of this exclusive privateclub are, Trevor Denny (tour operator), ArnoldOrton, Trevor Lane, Gerry Fitzhugh and SteveJepson although Steve nearly did not make itas he missed the first stage of the journey –a taxi from the hotel! To say he was a littleupset would be an understatement but thiswas all forgotten as these merry menenjoyed a brilliant day out!

The match itself was close to start with butwith some excellent bowling especially fromthe novices in the team Earls Barton won thematch 103-86. The winning rink this timewas “skipped” by Club President RichardPaintin ably assisted by Tim Hart, Rick Ceelyand Derek Essam. So three wins out of threeagainst strong opposition was the tour result, which just could not have been better.

The final evening we were given our ownprivate dinning room where we enjoyed a funevening. We discussed where the tourshould be next year and it was a unanimousdecision to return to the same hotel and playother teams in the area. Thanks were givento Richard (Tricky Dicky) Paintin for once againorganising an excellent tour – never an easytask but one that is much appreciated.

The final stage of the tour was lunch in TheGreyhound in Abingdon, Oxfordshire – a greatvenue to sign off a great tour!

Barton Today June 2012

The Earls Barton Youth Club Inclusive Community ProjectThe bottom-line is we need to raise the funds to enable the refurbishment and development of the toilet facilities in our village youthclub. Our 'youth club' is a valuable resource for everyone, of any age, in Earls Barton and the surrounding villages. Some examples ofthe uses of the building include short-mat-bowling, the Evergreen Club, various village events, dog training and of course a place for ouryoungsters to hang out safely.

We have recently been approached by a local Youth Disability group who wanted to use the club on a regular basis and we could notaccommodate this due to the lack of appropriate toilet facilities. Once this issue had been bought to our attention, it led us to investigatefurther, only to find that several of the older people who use the club regularly are disabled badge holders and struggle to use the currenttoilet facilities. We have discussed this issue and the possibility of developing the facilities to have better access with a variety of peoplewho use the club regularly. The project has been very positively received with people expressing the view that this would encouragethose currently excluded by the lack of appropriate facilities, to use the club.

The aim of the Earls Barton Inclusive Community Project is to provide equity. The refurbishment of the toilet facilities at the youth clubwill ensure that people who are currently excluded will be able to access the clubs facilities. This project will ensure that the club isaccessible and inclusive for the whole community, and not exclusive to non-disabled, bringing it in line with the Equity Act 2010. Despitethe continuing challenge of raising funds in the current financial climate, our commitment to achieving this goal remains buoyant. A goodstart has been made on fundraising for this project and the people of Earls Barton have been fantastic! To date, and with the support ofour local council, we have already raised £3,500.

We are now planning a huge push to raise the remaining monies required. This includes an event for Carnival night on the 16th June - a family event with the brilliant

local band ‘The Deckchairs’ performing to help us dance the night away!! There will also be a hot dogs stall and a raffle. Please support this event by attending,

or even by donating a bottle or sweets to our raffle. With your supportwe can reach our goal of providing a community facility accessible for all.

For further information please contact Helen Stanton 01604 812672 orAmanda Taylor on 01604 812643 [email protected]

Mothers’ Union (MU)On 2 May Helen Bush from Oakham spoke about the ‘hats she had worn’, reflecting her different responsibilities. It was fascinating listening to her many experiences, including as an alms house governor, Bishop’s school visitor and as a member of an independentprison monitoring board.

Our branch leader had much to tell us from the recent MU Forum. The unwanted board games we continue to collect are being wellused in the local prison, prompting us to be described as “a well goodbunch of ladies”! We’ve lots of plans for the future so if you’reinterested in being a part of the MU phone Kathleen on 811452 orcome and talk to us on our stall at the Carnival on 16 June. It had always been a personal challenge for me to complete the Breast Cancer Moonwalk, the idea of raising valuable funds to help fight this awful disease motivating me. During my nursing career, I have had the privilege of nursing many patients suffering with cancer hence it has remained close to my heart. It was with great excitement that I embarked on the training program alongside the lovely ladies of Barton! 12 weeks later and following a very challenging 20-mile walk in rain and gales, I was ready!! Nerves and excitement combined we set off for London on Sat 12th May, armed with decorated bra's and bags of goodies to keep us going. The atmosphere was tremendous, 17,000 people in Hyde Park ready to walk half and full moon walks. The countdown began and we were off, London by nightwas tremendous, the city that never sleeps, and we were still walking when dawn broke over the city bringing welcome sunshine to warm us on a particularlycold night!! What can I say except Wow what an experience, tiring, cold and long but fantastic and with help from our family and friends have managed toraise a terrific amount to keep on fighting this terrible disease. Thank you so much to all who supported us. With love Jo Dodds

The Boobies completed the Moonwalk, but now they tell us why they did it....

I count myself as one of the lucky ones, my mother survived breast cancer. She was diagnosed 8 years ago at a very early stage but this still resulted in part ofher breast being removed, something my mum struggled to come to terms with. This was the main reason for me wanting to do the Moonwalk and alsowanting to set myself a decent challenge before I hit my mid 40's!

Arriving at Hyde Park I was both excited and nervous by the site of the "Pink Palace" and the sheer numberof women (and men) already there and displaying their highly decorated bras, a concoction of both crazyand flamboyant designs! Team Barton Boobies set off at 11.27pm and the first few miles were pretty slowgoing, but each time we stopped to cross the road you noticed on the backs of those in front of you therewere messages for those they had lost to this dreadful disease; photos of mums, sisters, aunts andalthough a humbling experience it also spurred me on to get to the end of what turned into a 9 hourmarathon. The whole experience left me feeling proud for the whole team, grateful for the £3000+ wehave raised but most of all very aware of the need for the Moonwalk to carry on for years to come in orderto keep raising awareness of breast cancer and helping thousands of women and men each year deal withthis illness. I recommend everyone should give it a go at least once in their lifetime. Claire Smith

How did 9 hours of walking go by so quickly? One minute we were squashed into a start line of severalthousand women and the next we were arm-in-arm singing adubious rendition of 'Don't Stop Me Now' by Queen as wecrossed the finish line. The event was a mixture of sheerfrustration at not being able to walk at our faster training pace, waiting to cross roads and queuing for toilets, and, sheeramazement at the huge number of women - and men - who hadturned up to walk 26 miles through London at night to raise fundsfor WalktheWalk. Having lost both parents to cancer, and havingnursed many patients during my career, it was in no way aschallenging as dealing with all the emotions that go with therollercoaster ride that follows diagnosis. I hope that the fundswe've helped to raise in doing the Moonwalk will mean morepositive outcomes for many. Thank you for your support. Angie xx

I did the moonwalk in memory of my mum who died when I was17 of breast cancer. It was an amazing experience and a lot of funother than a particularly long and cold toilet stop at 3 am! I woulddefinitely do it again and thank everyone who sponsored us for anamazing cause very close to my heart, Jenny x

There was an estimated 17,000 ladies and some men power walking the 26.2 miles round London that night with anamazing array of decorated bras and some very poignant messages from people who have survived breast cancer orlost someone to it. The whole event reminded us the importance of the challenge and was quite a humblingexperience.

At 4am when we were cold and achy knowing we had another 4 hours or so to go to get to the finish line the onlythings that kept us going were the fabulous level of support from friends, family and the wider community in theirdonations and words of support and the knowledge that raising money for research and medical care can save livesand bring hope to many.

Thank you for your support. Sally

When I was asked by a very dear friend, if I would enter the moonwalk 2012 I felt really quite nervous, but excited atthe potential challenge ahead of me. Training with a very supportive team was most enjoyable, and made possiblethanks to the amazing support of my family. The whole evening passed in a flash, and I didn’t even feel tired!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank my husband Darren, children Jessica and Ben, friends, family, neighbours and work colleagues for their generous donations to “walk the walk” and support in helping me achievemy biggest challenge yet. Sue

Report on Race Night held on 13th AprilDear Readers,

I am writing to say thank you to everyone who supported the Race Night heldon 13th April to support fundraising for my trip to Peru.

You may remember my letter in this magazine in March. My name is HannahParkinson. I am 15 years old and I have been selected by Girl Guiding Anglia totake part in a trip to Peru in August 2012. Our group will be working with asmall children’s charity called Kiya Survivors who aim to provide a newbeginning for Peruvian children and young people who have special needs orhave been abused or abandoned; to gain independence through education andtherapy, love and laughter.

This is a great opportunity for me and I need to raise almost £2000 to coverthe cost of the trip. The Race Night has taken me a long way towards this goal.

The support I received was overwhelming, especially from local businesses, particularly in the current financial climate and I am extremely grateful toeveryone who made any contribution to the evening. Over 70 people werethere on the night including many family and friends, some of whom hadtravelled all the way from Essex to support me.

The Race Night was a great success and raised £840, most of which will be“match funded” by Barclays Bank through their community investmentprogramme.

I want to thank the following businesses who have helped me by sponsoringthe Races:-

The Earls Barton Village ShowIt’s back! The Earls Barton Village Open Flower and Produce Show is returningunder the new, and slightly shorter title, The Earls Barton Village Show.Following a twelve month break, we are very pleased to announce that whetheryou grow, sew, make or bake, the Earls Barton Village Show needs you!

Some things remain the same. The Silver Band Club has very kindly agreed tohost this wonderful event, which takes place as it always has, in September.Don’t miss the date - Saturday 8th September 2012 @ Silver Band Club.

Full details of all the classes will be published shortly. Suffice it to say that wehave added a few new classes and taken a few old classes away, in an effort tobring you a little something for everyone. We are looking forward to welcomingentries from everyone to create a fun filled competition, full of variety.

You may have a knack for growing the most enormous pumpkin,

Your Victoria Sponge may be the best around,

Handicraft may be your secret passion,

Earls Barton Village Show is where they can all be found!

One young member of Earls Barton will be especially pleased to hear of the return of the Earls Barton Village Show because along with her siblings she had entered a variety of the Junior Classes in the past, with varying degrees of success. In 2010, aged just 9years old, Isabel had won the “Best in Show” Trophy for the replica of her school uniform that she had made forone of her dolls.

Having spent the school summer holidays working hard, making her entry for the 2011 Show, she was very upsetwhen the Show did not take place. Following the Royal Wedding earlier that year, Isabel had made a pattern andsewn a replica of the Duchess of Cambridge’s Wedding dress. Isabel was so thrilled with her efforts; she sentphotographs to the Royal couple. Isabel’s dress may not have been on display in Earls Barton, but Katherine,Duchess of Cambridge, wrote to Isabel from Buckingham Palace to tell her how much she loved it!

The return of the Show is good news for Isabel and all the other supporters, young or old. So whether you grow, sew, make or bake, please join in with the fun.

Barton Today June 2012

News from our localPoliceHave fun and stay safe It’s set to be a busy – and hopefully sunny – summer, bringing lots of opportunity for celebrations and parties, with the Queen’sDiamond Jubilee; Euro 2012 football tournament; the Olympic Torch Relay, which comes through our county on 2 July; the LondonOlympics and Paralympics, and no doubt a number of local events too.

We want you to have fun and stay safe during these celebrations and, as part of a major countywide operation, officers will be out andabout throughout the summer taking positive action to tackle violent crime and disorder and anti-social behaviour to help make ourcommunities safer.

Whether it’s getting into a fight outside a pub, abusing a partner at home, or being involved in a scuffle outside the school gates, getting involved in violent crime can have serious consequences.

Our ongoing enforcement activity aims to show offenders that violence will not be tolerated, and a supporting communicationscampaign will encourage people to think about the consequences of violence before they act, as well as provide information andadvice about how to stay safe and reduce the risk of becoming a victim of crime.

Reducing the risk of harm to our communities is a key priority for the Force and a variety of tactics are being employed by officers totackle violent crime and disorder. These include early intervention to prevent a situation from escalating, targeting prolific offenders ofviolent crime, providing support and advice to victims and potential victims, and taking an educational approach by involving schoolsand young people.

As part of the operation, ‘high impact days’ dedicated to reducing incidents of violence will take place across the county over comingmonths. During these days, officers will be carrying out warrants and arresting wanted offenders, visiting offenders on bail for violenceoffences to ensure they are complying with their conditions, as well as calling on people known for getting involved in violence onFriday and Saturday evenings to remind them that drunken, anti-social or violent behaviour is not welcome in our town centres.

We want people to be able to have a safe and enjoyable summer and if you’re out and about, here’s some simple advice for you andyour family to help you stay safe:

• Don’t draw attention to your valuables...keep them out of sight

• Stay in well lit busy areas, stick to main routes and don’t be tempted to use shortcuts

• Having a night out? Be a good friend and stay together – plan your journey home and always use licensed taxis

• Let someone know where you are going, how they can contact you and when you are likely to be back

• If you’ve been a victim of any offence, please tell us – if we don’t know, we can’t help. Call us on 101 or in an emergency call 999

For more crime prevention advice, visit www.northants.police.uk or follow us on our facebook page atwww.facebook.com/northantspolice.

I just want to start this month with a big

thank you to Tracey for letting me share

her weight loss story with you last

month. She is generally a quiet person,

and was a bit embarrassed to start

with, but she is proud of her

achievement and wanted to share the

message that if she can do it anyone

can. Thank you Tracey – you have

already inspired a number of people to

join us at WeightWatchers, and I am

sure more people are making wiser,

healthier choices in their lives.

Let’s start with some information on:

Five Reasons You May Feel Hungry. A

surefire way to fail when trying to ‘cut

back’ is to find yourself hungry. You’re

driving along on your way to work, to

the gym, or to pick up your children

and – bam! – it hits you. That

overwhelming gnawing hunger. The

next thing you know, your pulling into a

drive through and ordering up a storm.

Isn’t it fascinating (and frustrating) how

the “I have to eat now!” feeling can hit

even if you’ve been making good

nutrition a top priority? Experts are

discovering that when you eat and

what your food tastes like can have a

major impact on how often hunger

pangs strike.

1. You eat the right foods at the

wrong times Eating at different times

every day can make it difficult for you

to tune in to your body’s hunger

signals. Haphazard eating can impact

on your weight loss. When British

researchers asked women to eat meals

at either the same time or at different

times each day, those who followed a

predictable pattern ate less than those

who ate at a different time every day.

The Fix: Plan ahead If you’ve been

keeping track, review your food diary to

focus on when you’re most likely to fall

prey to eating at erratic times. (If you

haven’t been keeping a food diary, try

doing so for a few days). Then, says

Moore, write out a schedule that

focuses on eating within 2 hours of

waking up and every 3 to 5 hours after

that for the rest of the day. If you tend

to lose track of time, set your watch or

digital organiser to beep when you

should eat.

2. You eat breakfast, just not the

right kind Although any breakfast is

better than none, the foods you choose

can have a major impact on how

satisfied you feel for the rest of the day.

Take that convenient cereal bar: It

might appear to be a healthy choice

when you don’t have time for a sit

down meal, but it's packed with simple

sugars that may have you rummaging

through the fridge well before lunch.

The Fix: Build a better mix of

nutrients. The key to making your

breakfast hold your appetite at bay until

lunch is building a morning meal

that contains both protein and

carbohydrate foods. It’s important to

combine some protein along with some

complex carbohydrates to provide

sustained energy throughout the

morning. Opt for 'no fuss' choices like

a slice of cheese on wholemeal bread,

egg whites on toast, wholegrain cereal

with skimmed milk, even half a turkey

sandwich .

3. Your diet is flawless but

flavourless If ho-hum, diet conscious

standbys like grilled chicken and

steamed veggies are staples on your

dinner plate, you could be heading for

trouble. You’re going to become bored

and eventually have difficulty sticking

with your weight loss plan.

The Fix: Spice it up Getting creative in

the kitchen will give your stand by

recipes new life, and keep you more

satisfied in the long run. Experiment

with fresh, flavoursome herbs, like

basil, ginger root, oregano, and mint.

Also, adding acidity (a dash of lemon

juice or balsamic vinegar) and

sweetness (a teaspoon of honey or

brown sugar) can make your staple

dishes more complex in taste. Texture

is also key: Aim for combinations of

creamy, crunchy, and chewy. Try

tossing chopped nuts on your greens

or mixing granola into your yogurt.

4. You stockpile your calories Do you

often eat so sparingly during the day

that by the time dinner rolls around

you’re famished? That strategy can

backfire, leading to overeating in the

evening. When you skip meals it’s

harder to think straight, so you’re less

concerned with the implications of

what you eat.

The Fix: Eat regularly Eating regularly

during the day is a must to head off

disaster later on. Even if you’re not

hungry, be sure to eat something, even

a small bite. Treat yourself the way

you’d treat your children. You wouldn’t

let them skip meals.

5. You drink your meals With the ever

increasing popularity of lattes for

breakfast and smoothies for lunch,

many of us are drinking our meals

instead of eating them. But drinking too

many caloric beverages can ultimately

leave you feeling unsatisfied. When

researchers at Purdue University in

West Lafayette, Indiana, gave study

participants 450 extra calories daily in

the form of either fluid or solid food,

those who ate the extra solids ate less

later in the day whereas those who

drank the extra fluids did not. The

reasoning: chewing causes the release

of hormones that start to signal

fullness, and solid food is recognised

within the digestive system as food,

triggering more fullness signals.

The Fix: Rethink convenience

Slurping down a meal might seem fast

and easy, but you could have

something just as quick, and far more

satisfying. Try a slice of toast with

peanut butter or a yogurt with some

fruit. If it’s the comfort of a hot drink you

want, go ahead and have that latte, just

have it with skimmed milk. And instead

of sipping it solo, enjoy it with a few

wholewheat crackers or a banana.

So some food for thought there –

pardon the pun. The biggest mistake

we make in general when trying to lose

weight is to cut back, but not replace,

resulting in hunger. This we all know is

not a good place to be and will

eventually be your downfall. One

fantastic element of the

WeightWatchers ProPoints plan is that

you need never be hungry and many

members say to me in the early weeks

“I cannot believe how much I have

eaten”. If you want to know more –

please do pop along. If you would like

any more details about your local

Weight Watchers meeting please call

me on 07779 081264 or email me at

[email protected]

Talking of popping along – I know a

number of you have become involved

in the jogging club on a Thursday night

– it sounds like a lot of fun, but you do

burn some calories too. It is free and

local – give it a go.

Have a great Bank Holiday at the

beginning of the month – no doubt I will

see many of you around at the many

village events.

The Live Arts Section Local performer Gary L Johnson shareswith us the best entertainment on offer thismonth at our local theatres.

This month it’s all about the family. You’ll soon seewhat I mean. Just a quick note before we start aboutRYTF 201 2. What a brilliant weekend I had (onceagain) at the East Midlands festival. The festivalsees a number of youth theatres from across theEast Midlands come together to share shows, workshops and events over two days. This year theweekend was themed around "superheroes" and allI can say is wow. Each year I wonder how will this year be topped, butevery year it happens. Youth theatres including "the Royal and Derngate","Castle" and Earls Barton’s very own "Starfruit" joined the event this year.(Starfruit have some very good dancers.) Well done to them, other youththeatres and the buddies who joined in with the 2012 festival.

Now back to this month’s theatre news and we’re starting at theLighthouse with FIREMAN SAM! (Sunday 3rd June) The Hero next dooris back due to popular demand with his live stage show Pontypandy Rocks!Join Fireman Sam, and all his friends, as Pontypandy hosts its first evermusic festival! Station Officer Steel’s booked a surprise guest star toperform at the festival and it’s a big secret. With so much to plan andprepare Norman Price and Mandy Flood are told to stay out of mischiefbut Naughty Norman is determined to find out who the secret superstarguest will be... at any cost. This day promises to be one of Fireman Sam’sbusiest yet as he’s called on to save a festival that promises to rockPontypandy. Will Sam save the day? Will the show go on? Will Elvis finallyget to perform? And will it all happen before Norman finds out who theguest star is and ruins the surprise for everyone?

This is set to be a BRILLIANT show and you can buy your tickets now fromthe Lighthouse. Tickets start from £12 for children. (Show suitable forchildren age 2+)

Next onto the "Children and Family Festival" at the Castle. (Tuesday 5th– 7th June 2012.) The Castle are offering three "fun filled days" for thewhole family to enjoy. (Entertainment and activities are individuallypriced.) Tuesday includes: Tangled (Disney film) (PG), "Time for Tea!"presented by the Castle Youth Theatre and a BOUNCY CASTLE to enjoy abouncy time. Wednesday sees the HARE AND THE TORTOISE performedby Tutti frutti and York Theatre Royal, "DANCE WORKSHOPS" andCRAFT WORKSHOPS to enjoy. Thursday welcomes the traditionalPUNCH AND JUDY to the festival as well as a PUPPET MAKING andCIRCUS WORKSHOPS. For more information about this festival pleasego onto the Castle website or call the box office NOW!

Also that week at the Castle sees the 2012 COMMUNITY production "Well-Rough" (9th – 10th June) by Deborah Gearing. "Hungry, hopeful peoplehave always come to Wellingborough, looking for a safe place to live, tomake an existence from the soil, the deep seams of iron ore, the water, theindustry. As people come and go, there’s always something left behind –something calling to be passed on, some faint bit of memory that gatherscolour and outline as the story is retold and across the generations onechild calls to another. "Well...rough"! is a collection of stories gatheredfrom the people of Wellingborough - looking back, treasuring the presentfor the future." Well ... rough”, a new play by writer Deborah Gearing, is apoetically crafted, sad, witty and poignant tale of Wellingborough and itspeople. Earlier this year, Deborah led a series of story share workshopsacross the Borough. The contribution of stories through workshops, discussions, interviews and letters became the foundation for the 2012Community Production, brought to life on The Castle stage by acommunity cast. Make sure you support the local performers involved inthis special production and maybe take your family along for a night toremember.

Quick mentions to some GREAT performances at the Derngate "RhodGilbert: The Man with the Flaming Battenberg Tattoo" on Thursday 7thJune. "The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy" from 15th – 16th June. Nextmonth: "Hedda Gabler" at the Royal. See you next month!! More training?

Barton Today's arts correspondent tells us how trainingin Leicester becamemore than just trying

to learn to dance. In September 2010 Idecided that it was time tobroaden my skills in theworld of musical theatre. Ihave always believed that

you can never do "too much" training. I decided to join a musical theatrecourse where I could improve all my skills (dance the most.) The aim ofthe move was to become a dancer as well as a singer / actor. Ok, I can getby with dance normally but I wanted some key skills to take forward formy future career. The first day in September felt like it was back to school.A group of performers meeting for the first time and not really sayingmuch. I remember standing in the entrance and moving ever closer to ataller girl. I thought, "She's going to be the first to talk!" And she was. Hername was Kim, and from that day we became very good friends. Stoodclose by was a second girl called Beth who again (we did not know at thetime) was to become a great friend over the two years. Me and Kim alwaysjoke, saying how Beth just "stood in silence".

All of a sudden I had a feeling that this was set to be more than justtraining. It was going to be the place to meet some of the best people inmy life, and to be given new opportunities as a performer. Anyway backto the training. Now this is when Theatre goes a little mad and you'llwonder WHY? Well we went into the studio on our first day and startedto work with our director who wanted us to turn ourselves into barbedwire. Barbed wire I thought! Ok? I've done stranger things. After the firstday we felt like we had known each other for years. Walking to the theatretogether in the blazing sun, seeing a man hugging the grass. (Never foundout why.) Over the following weeks everything was going to plan! I hadstarted to broaden my skills in dance. "Dear me" I thought "I don't thinkI’ll do dance full time." But we continued and worked on some greatprojects together. It was going so well! Then news broke that a new personwas to join the group, and we'd meet him at the theatre. I made it my taskto welcome him and make him feel at home. His name was Luke and hewent on to become one of my greatest friends.

Over the two years we worked together to create many interesting andexciting projects including a "breakfast not to forget", singing "favouritethings" in our PJs as well as making our brand new show MUSICALSTAGES (Performed in May / June). Whether it’s been shouting "link up"or collecting money in fancy-dress this group has been brilliant to workwith. So thank you to them all - Jack, Kate, Abby, Tia, Sabrina, Beth, Kim,Luke and not forgetting Eddie (the director).

It’s funny when you think about it. Theatre is a funny old business; itbrings so many interesting people together. You make good / best friendsand before you know it you’re all moving on, and away from each other. But one thing I’m sure is that this group won't be losing contact! I'll alsolook back at this past two years and think. "If I never re-trained I’d neverhave been involved with "Hairspray", "Beauty and the Beast" andpresented a "Masquerade Ball."

PS: The dancing finished ok - I performed in a ballet in April and thecharacter / jazz sessions finished well - but the urban needs a little morework I fear! (Maybe never again - Can you see me doing urban dancing?)

Your host:Gary Johnson

Welcome to the second column in which I am trying to live up to mygardening hero. This is of course my self-sufficient Grandfather, whoused to tend his patch in Norfolk. Now I can only visit his life throughhis diaries. I will again be gardening with Granddad.

This time of year everything is about preparation for the new year. Idon’t do a lot of winter vegetables and this year I only have parsnipswaiting in the ground for the first frosts to make them tasty. In 1979,unsurprisingly Grandad was ahead of me and had already dig most ofhis garden before the end of October. This is the time to clear thoseweeds you’ve let grow and dig the ground, incorporating manure if youcan get hold of it. Make sure it is nice and black with little or no odourbefore putting it into your patch. Why dig now? I’ll let Grandad tell you.

March 1979 “The early digging has paid off. The soil is well broken upby the frost. So easy to dig’.

So back to my bed. I will be digging over my large bed today. I’ve pulledout the last of the courgette plants that have now died back. I also liketo get out most of the weeds before I dig. You can do one of two things.Either just turn the soil with the spade or do a trench dig. This is digginga trench along the length of the bed and move that soil to the other end.Now turn the soil from in front of the trench into the trench effectivelymoving the trench down the bed. Go slow and steady and bemethodical. If you have it add manure or compost as you dig to get itthroughout your soil. Any remaining weeds should be buried and thesoil will have air incorporated.

This just shows that people are very much like gardens. They boththrive on our help and attention.

Earls Barton InfantSchool NewsDespite the prolonged wet spell we are stillhaving fun here at school. Our new grass aroundthe playground looks a treat and the children love rollingdown the grassy hill without fear of getting muddy!

Between showers we have managed to squeeze in visits from ouremergency services. Reception children learnt all about the workof police dogs in capturing criminals. They watched withexcitement as Billy the spaniel tracked down suspicious packageshidden around the school playground. Year One children were ableto have a tour around a real fire engine and hear how modern dayfires are dealtwith. This allowedthem to compareand contrast withwhat they hadlearnt about howthe ‘Great Fire ofLondon’ had beencombated in 1666.

On a more seriousnote many of ourstaff receivedtraining from theEast Midlands ambulance service at the beginning of May on howto give basic CPR and use the defibrillator that we now have inschool. The machine has kindly been donated to us through thecharity ‘SADS UK’ as a result of fundraising by Mr and Mrs Hewitt.Whilst we are grateful for this equipment I know we are all hopingit will never have to be put to use!

This term has also seen a visit by the Quantum Theatre Companyto add that little bit extra to the curriculum. Last month the childrenin Years One and Two watched an informative show that enhancedtheir scientific learning on materials.

They are looking forward to thecompany returning in a couple ofweeks with a ‘maths’ show.

Looking forward, preparations arenow well under way for our ‘JuneRose Day’, here at school on themorning of 23rd June. The drawhas taken place amongst Year Twochildren for the King, Queen andtheir 8 attendants and parents arebusy sourcing their costumes as Iwrite. On the day there will be thecustomary crowning of the Kingand Queen, a parade, a wide varietyof stalls and, of course, countrydancing performed by our Year Twochildren who are currentlyrehearsing at every opportunity. I do hope you will all pop alongand support us on the day and that the sun will shine!

Look out for us too in the village carnival on the weekend beforethat when we’ll be ‘Going for Gold’!

NIAMH CURRY'The People's Angel'You were a blessing to yourparents and touched thehearts of the nation.

A loss to us, but a gain to heaven. RIP to the bravestlittle girl ever!

The people from Earls Barton send their heart felt condolences to the family.

Chris Heaton- Harris MP’s WestminsterReport - May 2012I write this monthly article on the same dayas one of the most important events in theparliamentary calendar – the State Openingof Parliament by Her Majesty the Queen.

It is a quintessentially British event and is anexample of why people from across theworld come to visit the United Kingdom –no other country in the world does pompand ceremony like we do. I know there are sceptics out there, butthere can be no doubt that it is great for the British economy, it isgood for jobs and it is good for the general ‘feel-good’ factor of ournation.

Let’s face it, where else in the world would an MP be takenhostage (at Buckingham Palace!), before the Queen makes herway to Parliament, in order to guarantee her safety. A quirky, buthistorically important tradition.

I have to say I am delighted that we can look forward to a wholesummer of pomp and ceremony with the Queen’s DiamondJubilee and then the summer Olympic and Paralympic Games.Let’s hope this ‘drought’ period comes to an end and the sunshines for what should be a great few months for our country.

I also welcome much of the content of the Queen’s Speech inpolicy terms, with its focus on economic growth, justice andconstitutional reform.

I know that the predominant aim of Ministers at the moment is tosecure economic growth – underpinned by a sustainedcommitment to reducing the deficit and restoring economicstability. There really is no other choice.

As such, I welcome moves to reduce the red-tape stranglingbusinesses, to strengthen the regulation of the financial servicessector and to reform the electricity market to ensure prices arefairer to the consumer.

The Government is also committed to reducing and preventingcrime and with this in mind, the Government will introduce a Billto bring into being the National Crime Agency, in order to tackleserious and organised crime and strengthen border security.

Crime constantly features as one of the key issues of concern inthis country and I welcome the steps the Government is taking totry and advance the fight against it.

Much has also been made by the media of the issue of reform ofthe House of Lords, but this is only one small part of theGovernment’s constitutional reform agenda. In contrast, little hasbeen said about the Government’s plans to introduce individualvoter registration to improve the administration of elections and itsefforts to reform the rules governing succession to the crown.

On the specific issue of reform of the House of Lords, I have tosay my mind is very open and I am keen to listen to the views ofmy constituents and to the debates held in Parliament on thisissue, before coming to a decision in due course.

Clearly, aside from the pomp and ceremony, today has been veryimportant in conveying to the country the Government’s keyobjectives for the parliamentary session ahead.

It really is an honour and a privilege to be your Member ofParliament and if I can ever be of any assistance to you then pleasedo not hesitate to contact me using the details below.

With best wishes,

Chris

Local resident George Blackwell shows that just because you are getting alittle more advanced in years does not necessarily mean that your life has todecelerate to a slower pace. In fact, trying to get to see George is no easytask as his many and varied commitments mean that he is nearly always onthe go. As a county councillor, borough councillor and parish councillor he hasa very busy timetable, attending meetings and responding to the needs oflocal people. Add to that his passion for Northampton Saints and sport ingeneral, his membership of the Earls Barton Sports Association and the BowlsClub and his presidency of Earls Barton Cricket club, not forgetting the factthat he is often found to be on long haul journeys across the world, visitingfamily or watching sporting spectacles, then it’s no wonder that he is a hardman to pin down. This month however, we are pleased to say that we wereable to catch George and shine the spotlight on his interesting and very fulllife.

George Blackwell was born in West Street, Earls Barton on September 21st1934. His father Harry, a chauffeur and gardener, originated from Hackletonand was married to Mabel. They were to have four sons. George was thethird born of the four brothers; Ken and Ray, both no longer with us, wereolder than him and the youngest was David who now lives in Earls Bartonwith his wife Jill.

Fast forward from 1934 to the present and George does not seem to havestrayed far from his roots. He is still living in the village which he loves somuch, having moved home all the way from West Street to his current housein White Way, where he has lived since 1966. It may only be half a milebetween those two homes, but the intervening seventy seven years havealso seen George relocating 12 000 miles to the other side of the world, experiencing life as a family down under.

Those intervening years also saw a very happy forty four year marriage to hisbeloved wife Pat, who sadly passed away in 2005, a household enlivened bytheir four children, Cindy, Wendy, Julie and Robert and a working life devotedto supporting colleagues as a full time trades union representative of theAmalgamated Engineering and Electrical Union.

As a child George did not venture too far from Earls Barton. His school dayswere spent at the local village school where he stayed until he was 15 yearsold. In those days, only the lucky few who passed the 11 plus examination, left the village to move on to an education at grammar school. Interestingly, when reflecting about his life in local politics, George cites the introduction ofcomprehensive secondary education for all across the county as one of thesignificant milestones of his time working as a councillor. This possiblyprovides a clue about why George has worked so hard for so many years’ asa county councillor, borough councillor and parish councillor; his belief that weshould all be treated fairly and equally.

As a young man, George was friends with Alan Wyman and Keith Line. Oneevening they decided to venture to the Half Moon pub in Grendon for achange of scenery. It was a decision that was to have a major influence onthe rest of George’s life at it was here that he met Pat, his wife to be. Patwas from a household whichwas active in the LabourParty and she too took on herparental beliefs and found awilling ally in George. Herfirst marriage to Ron endedtragically four years laterwhen he died by which timethey had had two children,Cindy and Wendy. Georgeand Pat were married in 1961and had a daughter Juliesoon after.

Not long later, the Blackwellfamily decided to try theirluck in Australia and this wasto mark the beginning ofGeorge’s declared love affairwith that country. In factGeorge says, if it wasn’t for all of his commitments he could happily alternate, spending 6 months in Australia, where his son Robert now lives, followed by6 months in UK. He loves the outdoor life Australia has to offer and is alsopartial to a pint of Victoria bitter.

The Blackwell family arrived in Australia after 6 weeks at sea on board one ofthe £10 immigration passages that were available at that time. George hadsecured a job as a toolmaker, having completed a 6 year apprenticeship inWellingborough. The family loved the way of life in the Australian sunshineand there was a further addition to the family when their youngest childRobert was born. During his time working in Australia, George was to become active in the trades unions and became a shop steward.

In 1966, the family decidedto move back to the UK.They briefly lived inWellingborough. Georgelanded a job in a Coventrytool room and thoughtabout relocating there. This was not to be andthey moved to theircurrent address at WhiteWay. What a blessing thatwas for Earls Barton.

George was eventually tobecome a full time officerof the AmalgamatedEngineering and ElectricalUnion. His work involved alot of travel to differentparts of the countrydealing with unionmatters. He recalls thatwhen he was working atBritish Timken there wasan unfair difference between the pension rights of ‘staff’ and the men andwomen workers. He proudly recalls that union negotiations helped to erasethose inequalities.

George loves sport and especially rugby. Having played himself for 27Command Workshop REME, during his two years in the army, as well asTrowbridge and later Wellingborough, he has an encyclopaedic knowledge ofthe game. One of the highlights for him was when he travelled back toAustralia to the Rugby World Cup in 2003. By this time, Pat was alreadysuffering from cancer but it was a trip they wanted to make. He remembersthe moment during extra time in the final, when Johnny Wilkinson scoredthat memorable drop goal to beat the Australians in their own backyard. Itwas a trip that he is glad he and Pat made together as it brings back such richmemories.

George was first elected as a county councillor in 1973 and has been on theNorthamptonshire County Council continuously since 1981, onWellingborough Borough Council since 1979 and is the longest servingmember of Earls Barton Parish Council. He describes Earls Barton as a goodplace to live, with a real community spirit, surrounded by beautifulcountryside. He also adds that he feels privileged to have represented thelocal people for so many years. Not that it has always been plain sailing. He

remembers getting a rather irate phone call from Don White, who wasa very well known local boot and shoe factory owner as well as a Saintsand international rugby player. He had got wind that the new link roadfrom the A45 up to the village would be passing very close to his housein Aggate Way. He was not a happy man. He demanded to see Georgestraight away. “What’s all this about that new road coming through myfront garden?” he wanted to know. As is often the case, once time hadbeen taken discussing and explaining what was going on, Don’s angerwas vented and he was left feeling a lot happier. Indeed, he remaineda family friend for many years.

Trying to encapsulate such a busy and varied life into a few words is noeasy task. George says that looking back he could not have managedwhat he has done without the love and support of his wife, family(which now extends to 8 grandchildren) and friends. He says that losinga partner is very hard and that it is difficult sometimes not to feel lonely.Perhaps that is one of the reasons why George still throws himselfwholeheartedly into so many aspects of life. Or perhaps it is his politicalbelief that there should be a fair and equal society and his concern thatthe gap between rich and poor is widening, demonstrated by obscene

salaries and bonuses.

Earls Barton is very fortunate to have such a committed and hard workingmember of its community. Speak with him when you can, before hedisappears to another council meeting, another assignment with a concernedlocal person or another journey to the other side of the world. Even now heis planning a trip during summer 2013, so that he can take some time out towatch the British Lions rugby team on their tour of Australia. There will bemany people thinking that, god willing, when they reach the age of 77, theytoo will continue to have the same drive and passion for life that GeorgeBlackwell so clearly has.

Brian Emerson Writes…I don’t know about you but I have been struck by the recent series of“adverts” on BBC advertising their politics coverage. Everything, sothey say, is politics. Education, the minimum wage, benefits forcarers, for children and for the disabled, transport, bus passes, trainfares, pensions.... Politics is all about the sort of society we want tohave, the sort of society we want to live in.

I was also stuck by the fact that in Greece (like Australia and othercountries) it is a duty to go and vote. Far more than a right, it is a duty.It is a duty to think about the sort of country you want to live in. InFrance, where, like most countries elections are held on a Sunday, there is no electioneering and no polls permitted on the precedingSaturday, to allow, supposedly, people to think about the sort ofcountry you want to live in and therefore the person you are going toelect.

By the same token, perhaps, everything is religion. The Old Testamentof the Bible, especially that part known as the Law, was written togive people the sort of society which is pleasing to God and right forpeople. Jesus said “ Do not think that I have come to abolish the Lawor the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfil them. Itell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallestletter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear fromthe Law until everything is accomplished.” (Matthews gospel, chapter 5 verses 17 - 18).

The Law of course is not just the Ten Commandments although Jesussaid that they could be summed up by “Love the Lord your God withall your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with allyour strength. This is the first and greatest commandment. And thesecond is like it: Love your neighbour as yourself. All the Law and theProphets hang on these two commandments.” (Matthew 22 verses37 - 40)

Our problem today is that we often read the commandments andthink about punishment for disobeying. Heres one example:- “If yousee your brother’s ox or sheep straying, do not ignore it but be sureto take it back to him. If the brother does not live near you or if you donot know who he is, take it home with you and keep it until he comeslooking for it. Then give it back to him. Do the same if you find yourbrother’s donkey or his cloak or anything else he loses. Do not ignoreit.” (Deuteronomy 22 verses 1 - 3).

What is the underlying principle behind this? It is nothing to do withan ox. It is to do with handing back property which you find whichdoes not belong to you. Finders keepers is not what the Bible says.So wouldn’t you want to live in a society where caring for another’swelfare or property is the norm. Everything is......

Dear Eric,

I do not live in the village but popped in to the Stag pub lastweek for a drink. I was very impressed with the food menuand the service I received from a lady called Wendy wasexcellent. I shall definitely be returning as all the peoplethere seemed so friendly and the back garden looks perfectfor a summer’s drink. When I left the Stag I took a strollaround the village and noticed that it has a “Silver BandClub” – can you tell me what night they practise as I playthe French Horn and would be interested in joining.

John Le Marchant

Hello John,

I have made a few enquiries on your behalf and it seems thatonce upon a time, when the local boot and shoe industry wasflourishing, Earls Barton had its very own band which “met” atthe Silver Band Club. Apparently, partaking in the local brewwas seen to be just as important as perfecting their tunes. It’sa shame that there is no longer a band.

Mind you, there are quite a few people who go to the SilverBand Club who like blowing their trumpets, as long as it is theirown, and I am sure you could find others like yourself, whoenjoy blowing an instrument. It would be great to hear onceagain the reverberation of Earl Barton’s very own band.

Good luck,

Eric

Dear Eric,

I am very confused as when I read about the exciting skislope project for Earls Barton. I couldn’t wait to tell myfriends but when I did they started to laugh. I was hurt andupset as this happens to me from time to time so I askedmy best mate to explain. “It’s an April fool joke, mate,” hesaid. I read the article again and phoned the Parish Councilwhere a lovely lady explained that it was still going throughthe early planning stages. Please can you tell me the truth?

Donald

Hi Donald,

It can be very humiliating when other people laugh at you butit may be you who has the last laugh. I am pretty certain thatthe proposed winter sports complex is for real. I hope so, asmy Hilda has already started waxing her skis and wants me tohave a few lessons so that I can go on the piste with her.

Regards,

Eric

If you have any concerns or issues that you want answering, why not write to Barton Today’s veryown agony uncle. He works under the pseudonym Eric, to maintain his professional anonymity. Ericis steeped in wisdom and worldly knowledge and is very keen to provide advice and guidance to thepeople of Earls Barton to help them make those difficult decisions. Whatever your problem, don’tthink twice about contacting Eric on [email protected]. He looks forward to hearing from you.

Dear Eric,

I have now been married to my second husband for justover ten years. When we got married in 2001 he told methat he was 43 years old. I was very pleased with myself atthe time as I was now able to boast that I had bagged a toyboy. I was just over 55 on our wedding day, making me aright old cougar.

Imagine my shock recently when I was looking throughsome of his old family photo albums, only to see himjoining in the party fun during the celebrations of QueenElizabeth’s Coronation. He was showing off a nice pair ofsartorial sideburns. By my reckoning, that must make himat least 75 now, which is 10 years older than me. Whatshould I do? He doesn’t know that I have seen the photos.Should I confront him with this revelation?

Yours,

Shirley

Dear Shirley,

I can’t imagine the shock this must have been. There arecertain questions that need to be asked. Is he still firing on allcylinders or has his big end started to go? If you are stillsatisfied with him, then why not hang on to him, especially ifhe has a bit of money. If, on the other hand, life is not a bed ofroses for you, you could always threaten to expose him (notliterally!) and post his deceit on Facebook. By the sounds of itthough, it’s highly likely that he is more conversant with thesmall ads in the Evening Telegraph than he is with social media.

Good Luck.

Eric

Dear Eric...Dear Eric...

Dear Eric.

I am very unhappy. Because of the current ban brought inby Anglia Water, my husband has not been able to get hishose pipe out for over a month. My garden is ratherneglected. Although the garden can be tended manually, this does not bring the same benefits as a proper hosing. What makes matters worse, is that my friend Sheila wholives in Lancashire, boasts about the fact that her husbandcan use his hosepipe whenever he likes. I am so concernedthat I have even considered relocating up north so that I canget back to using a hose pipe as and when I want.

Regards,

Germaine

Dear Germaine,

It would be a drastic step to up sticks and leave good oldNorthamptonshire, hose ban or not. I believe that if sufficientnumbers got together and petitioned Anglia Water about thisban, they might change their policy. Mind you, don’t get tooexcited. From what I hear, most of the women I know, preferthe manual watering of their gardens and would not mind if thehose pipe ban became permanent.

Sorry I can’t be of more help,

Eric

Five More Myths About DogsExpert Dog Advice from Graeme Hall, “The Dogfather”

The subject of dogs health, dog behaviour and the law surrounding dogs is always surrounded by myths and misunderstandings. We ran an article about that last year which was very popular, so here are five more myths and truths about Man Best Friend:

Dogs MUSTN’T eat raw bones. Surprisingly, perhaps, that’s not entirely true - Raw bones and meat is what they were designed for! So long as they are big enough not to choke them, it’s no problem for healthy dogs. “As fit as a butcher’s dog” has been a stock phrase for a long time! Smaller cooked bones, however, can splinter. They’re the ones to avoid at all costs.

Dogs have NO concept of time. In fact, dogs have a very accurate biological clock. If you regularly feed your dog at the same time of day you’ll that your dog develops his own special way/s of reminding you it’s dinner time! You may notice that in Spring and Autumn when the clocks change they fail to adapt immediately. Incidentally, they also have memory - If not, how could we train them..? They do, however, think “in the now” in a way that’s quite different to people. We’ve discussed this in Barton Today before.

Puppies need LOTS of exercise to burn off energy. They certainly do have boundless energy on tap some of

the time. Puppies are often a handful, but over-exercising them can cause long term b o n e a n d j o i n t d a m a g e . A t f o u r months old, even 30mins is too long for most. Ask your vet about your breed. Hydrotherapists know this too - sadly they often treat even one year old dogs with problem caused by

over-doing exercise. Don't let it happen to you! The answer, incidentally, is lots of mental exercise to help tire them.

There can only be ONE pack leader in the house. Dogs will happily learn to take everyone’s lead if you all learn how to be good leaders. A little professional advice can go a long way and being a pack leader certainly isn't about bullying them into submission. That doesn’t work with people and it’s not the right way to treat your dog either. You all need to be ‘singing from the same hymn sheet’ too, of course.

If your dog’s microchipped, you DON’T need a dog tag. You do! The Control Of Dogs Order 1992 requires every pet dog in a public place to have a visible identity such as a disc on the collar. The information required is your name and address. You can add other things too such as a contact phone number. That’s a good idea. Experts agree microchips are a good thing (They may soon be a requirement) but you still need a dog tag. Is your dog legal?

That’s it for this month, friends. You’ll find more free dog articles, tips and help with dog training at www.DogfatherTraining.co.uk.

June Services at All Saints

All Saints Church NewsInformal service “a hit”“Welcoming and relaxed,” said my new friend when we had a chance to talkin groups during the service on Sunday. “That’s how this feels. If only morepeople knew it was less rigid.” Said another, “I thought it would all be forchildren, but the balance is right. The first part of the service is child friendlyand then when the children leave partway through for their own fun in thehall, it becomes more adult orientated.” That Sunday some 50 people enjoyedsinging, listening, discussing, watching the drama and praying together.

If you’d like to see for yourself what the service is like why not go along to AllSaints Church at 10.40 am for coffee, cake and chat before the service startsat about 11 am? The dates in June are 3rd, 17th and 24th and 1 July. ParishCommunion is at 9.30 am on all these dates too. The All Age and Paradeservice is at 10 am on 10 June with Said Holy Communion at 8.30am.

There’s now a wide choice of worship at All Saints, so why not try it? Goingby others’ experience you’ll be made very welcome.

Annual MeetingThis was held after Sunday worship on 22 April, giving all a chance to reflectback on 2011 and look forward to the future. During the year with the help ofthe community the church (yes I do mean the people!) discerned anddeveloped the Vision that we believe God has for All Saints in this place. Thegreat thing is that we are beginning to see the results already. As well as abusiness meeting it was an opportunity to thank everyone, elect new officersand the Parochial Church Council and hear suggestions for the future. Afterthe meeting a bring and share lunch was enjoyed by all. Next year’s AnnualMeeting will be held on Sunday 14 April 2013.

God in the Ordinary and the ExtraordinaryThe Men’s Breakfast has returned to the village! Thanks to the good work ofPeter Harper and Bob Smith, “the Team in the Kitchen” – Tom, Margaret andGlynis – and around thirty guys from all walks of life who turned up for themeal on Saturday April 28. One new approach for the payment of the mealwas that there was no setprice. You were asked topay what you felt thebreakfast was worth, anice touch.

The speaker, introduced byColin Suter, was the RevdCanon Chris Peck whospoke about God in theordinary and extraordinaryaspects of all our lives, from the mundane of twomen just chatting to oneanother to God revealing his will through signs and portents in the twenty-first century. A brilliant talk that went down well and prompted manyquestions.

Peter announced that because of the massive interest in the breakfasts otherswill certainly be planned throughout the year, so look out for moreannouncements in your village magazines and at a church close to you. Ofcourse, you do not need to be a churchgoer to come along, just contact Peterfor more details.

In fact it was interesting that those expressing an interest in the next mealwere asked to give their email addresses to Peter – could the Church bearriving in the Internet Age? Only time will tell.

In the meantime, an excellent repast of Crunchy Nut Cornflakes, Juice, Tea,Coffee, Eggs, Bacon, Sausages, Fried Bread, Baked Beans and Hash Brownswent down well, along with second helpings, and plenty of Toast, Marmaladeand Jam. As one of the guests remarked at our table, “Funny, after this I amattending a meeting of the local Stroke Association!” Who says Christianityis just spiritual? Good Food, Good Fellowship and a Good Time – can’t be bad!

FAIRTRADE NEWS

Fairtrade Coffee Morningon Saturday 9th June

10am - 12 noon at the Church Hall

for homemade cakes, fresh coffee, Traidcraft food andgifts, new and secondhand books & children’s activities.

Supermarket Campaigns Success! The Campaigning has definitely been worthwhile as the Queen’sSpeech included acommitment to thelegislation needed to setup a supermarketswatchdog, known as theGroceries CodeAdjudicator. So thanksto all those of you whoplayed a part in this bywriting to their MP orby signing paperchainsfrom our ‘Big Brew’event in Fairtrade Fortnight, which were delivered directly to theDepartment for Business, Innovation and Skills. (one campaignerhad decided to rename the department as you’ll see from the photoas this leglisation has been a long time coming!)

While all three main political parties committed to setting up theAdjudicator in their 2010 manifestos, the legislation needed to setup the body was still not forthcoming. The people that pick, packand grow the food we buy everyday were still being squeezed bysupermarkets with no route to recourse. So Traidcraft campaignerskept up the pressure. Alongside supporters from organisationsincluding Friends of the Earth, Action Aid and the FairtradeFoundation. Norman Lamb, the minister responsible for theAdjudicator, indicated that he was hopeful that the body would beup and running soon.

When you’re campaigning on an issue like this for a long time, it’snot always easy to find the energy to keep going. But Traidcraftsupporters have never lostsight of the importance ofa watchdog to protectfarmers, workers andproducers fromsupermarket bullying. Soit’s fantastic to get thiswin!

We hope you will continueto work with us in the fightfor a fairer food chain. Youcan keep up to date withall the latest supermarketscampaign news andactions at www.campaigns.co.uk/supermarkets.

Please continue to support Fairtrade by coming to our next coffeemorning as part of the village festival fortnight, details below, andlook out for us on the Churches Together stand at the carnival….

March 2011 55.

Ah don’t they look sweet ….. like butter wouldn’t melt !!! The Under 12’s squad consists of: Dan Talbot, Dan Webb, Lewis Carvell, Harry McNeill, James Perry, Charlie Lawrence, Luke Booker, Nikhil Khatri, Alex Woodruff, Sam Fidelia, Jake Channer, William Dodwell - and missing from the photo Jonathan Ashworth, Jake Lay and Jack Smart. The team is managed by Darren Booker and Assisted by Dave Dodwell.

Not one of the biggest squads at Earls Barton Football Club but the boys all get on very well on and off the pitch(and although go to no less than 8 different schools, they still manage to communicate during the week, evenif it is on the xbox or playstation)…………..

At the start of the season it was decided that it would be good for the boys to embark on anew challenge, so the decision was taken to move from the Kettering Weetabix League over to the Northants John Henry League. With 3 divisions, the team were entered into the U12C league. Unfortunately, although coming across some really friendly opposition, the majority of games have been won with ease for most of the season, hence they are proud to be sitting at the top of their league - having scored 80 goals and letting in just 8 in their fi rst 10 games so far. The team have done extremely well and are due to play Nether Heyford in the quarter fi nals of the League Cup and by the time you read this article they will either be sad or on their way to the semi fi nals……….

Training for the U12’s is on a Wednesday night at the Pioneer Sportsground6.30pm - 8.00pm. If you are player that can add something to our team, please dont hesitate to join us at one of our training sessions.

Tesco for Schools & Clubs Voucher Scheme is back for 2011 !!!

Vouchers will be available in store and with online grocery orders from Monday 28th February until Sunday 8th May, so get collecting! Last year went well but let’s make it a record collection this year!! The more vouchers we collect, the more equipment we can get for the club.

If you collect the vouchers and would like to donate them to EBUFC, please contact anyone on the General Committee - where they will be gratefully received! If you would like a collection box and poster to put in your workplace, please email us at [email protected]

Under 14’s - Double Champions!!!!Steve Biggs and Adrian Tuck would like to congratulate the Under14 squad on a fantastic season in which they have won 2 majortrophies. The boys have not only been crowned champions of theWeetabix 1st Division but have also won the County Cup Final for thefirst time in EBUFC youth football history. Quite a season and we areincredibly proud of them all !!!

League Division 1 Champions A hard fought title race this year sawEBUFC win the league by just 1 point ahead of our big rivals HighamColts. Since the boys were Under 8’s we have always had a battlewith Higham and the 2 sides have remained the constant class actsover the last 7 seasons whilst many other teams have come andgone. We won the league in style at the penultimate game of the season this year at home to Rockingham Forest 5 – 1. The league title is veryimportant to us as it judged over a whole season and reflects the consistently high level of skill and commitment the boys show week in week out.

The league trophy will be presented to the team at EBUFC presentation day on the 24th June at the Grange by an official from the WeetabixLeague.

County Cup Champions The County Cup is played at U12 / U14 and U16 agegroups; we had been knocked out in the semi final by the eventual winnersParklands Tigers in 2010, so to go one better and reach the final was our goalfor this year’s competition.

The cup has teams from as faraway as Peterborough as wellas teams from several leaguesin Northampton including ourown Weetabix League. Thisyear we swept through the 4early rounds only to meetHigham Colts in the semi finalwho we beat 4 – 3 on a verywet, cold miserable muddyday at the Pioneer, the boys

played as well as could be expected in the conditions but at the end of the game they hadjust wanted it more than Higham so on to the final…….

Our opponents were Northampton Falcons from the Northampton Youth League Division 1, they were already league champions and also intheir league cup final so they were on for the treble and considered a very good side by their peers!! We did our homework on them and feltprepared for the final which was played at Cogenhoe FC on 5th May.

EBUFC took the lead early, through our skipper Ollie Gravestock, in the first half only to see the score levelled from the penalty spot before halftime to make it 1 – 1. We dominated the second half but couldn’t get the breakthrough when against the run of play Falcons scored to makethe score 2 – 1 to them with time getting short. More pressure from EBUFC led to an equaliser with 4 mins to go direct from a Dan Parker cornerso the game finished 2 – 2 and went straight to penalties.

EBUFC held their nerve during the shootout (which is more than can be said for Adrian and I) andwe won 4 – 3 on penalties after a cool Kieran Starmer slotted home the winner during sudden death.

A well deserved and hard fought for trophy that we can proudly display alongside the WeetabixDiv 1 trophy, amongst others, for the next year at the Grange.

Over the 7 seasons Adrian and I have coached the boys we have accrued some fantasticmemories and have had great support from the EBUFC committee and all the parents. The boysthemselves have collected some significant silverware and titles during that time; I thought it wouldbe worth reflecting on just what they have achieved over the years!!

Many of the boys in the squad are from the village and have been with us a long time, we haveboys who have played 300+ games for EBUFC and 6 of the starting line up at this years County CupFinal played for us at Under 8 age group.

We also need to give a mention to Michelle Biggs, Carl Andrews and all the othermums and dads who help out with the running of the club along with our sponsors atBLC British Leather Technology Centre and Rudi Consultancy.

Finally, I hope all the boys sign for us again next season but I’m already 99% sure wewill lose our skipper, Ollie Gravestock, as he will no doubt be leaving us to sign forNorthampton Town Centre of Excellence post his current trial there, well done, thankyou and good luck to Ollie!!

It has been a long, hard, emotional season and we are very proud of the squad butwe can now sit back and have a rest (until the tournaments start that is in a fewweeks!!)

Forget and Survive…The light bulb in the bedroom has burned out. The new bulbs are downin the kitchen. So you wander downstairs, walk into the kitchen andask yourself “What am I doing here?” Are you losing it? Not accordingto Professor Gabe Radvansky of Notre Dame University; instead, youare surviving. In a series of tests he discovered that participants in hisresearch forgot items once they had crossed the threshold of eachdoorway. His conclusion is that the brain deliberately pushes old stuffout from your mind so that you can focus on what’s going on now. “It’sa good strategy for cavemen and cavewomen,” says Radvansky,“particularly when they cross from forest to open land where differentpredators may exist.”

So you are not losing your marbles, or getting old. You are maturelyassessing a new situation for threats and opportunities. Take a post-itnote with you next time and write down what you need. Or take theburned out bulb with you…

Have your Sayto B2Day...

Dear Editor

In the May addition of Barton today on page 11 in the bottomright hand corner a picture is printed on safari in SouthAfrica. It is a fine picture intended for use, however theperson in the picture is my son in law Keith Joughin taken bymy daughter Jude Joughin (previously Chantler). The captionstates that the photo is of myself Mike Chantler. Clearly it isnot. I have lived in the village for over 30 years and know anumber of people.

I suppose the onlygood thing is thatKeith is not wearinga Liverpool footballshirt as he supportsthem. That wouldhave been too muchof an insult if thishad been the case as

I supportManchester United. Therefore would yoube good enough tocorrect this in the nextaddition please. Thank you in anticipation.

Kind regards Mike Chantler

Sorry about that Mike and am very glad to correct this error. Also commiserations about how the season ended for you…hope the heart was able to withstand the tension.

Litter PickDear Editor

Just to say, Earls Barton, especially Station road and the walkdown to the river look so much better since the litter pick. Iwould like to thank all the volunteers who went out in the coldto clean Earls Barton up.

Carol Moriarty

Well done to all the volunteers who took part in the Litter Pickwhich you can also read about elsewhere in this magazine.

Classic Car

The Co-op Dear Editor

Earls Barton is much admired for it's community spirit, andit's range of independent retailers. However I amdisappointed to inform you that the only "national" retailer inthe village doesn't share our love and support of thecommunity.

My vintage fairs have proved very popular with not onlypeople from within the village, but have attracted people fromas far as Leicestershire, Bedfordshire and Warwickshire witheveryone thoroughly enjoying themselves! This can only helpcement our reputation as a wonderful village!

Not according to the new management at "our village" Co-op.... Who flatly refused to support my recent fair, andwon't even put up a small poster! I have been informed thatthis is "in line with company policy".......... Perhaps theyshould consider what is best for "community policy"?

Kind Regards Julia

Hi Julia, Thank you for your letter. I am sorry to hear that youwere unable to get your poster displayed at the Coop. Perhapsthere has been a misunderstanding. It might be worth askingagain just to double check this information. I know that lots ofpeople like skimming through shop notice boards to find outwhat is happening locally. Why not write to head office to askthem to reconsider 'company policy.'

Whist DriveDear Editor

Many thanks to the people who have supported the whistdrives during the winter months - we are sorry to say that wewill not be holding whist drives during the summer months.Look forward to seeing you all again - drives will hopefully re-commence on Wednesday 26th September, held on 2nd, 4thand 5th Wednesday of month.

Best wishes Marilyn

Hope all you whist players don’t have too many withdrawalsymptoms and will be able to find other ways to occupyyourselves during the summer months.

Dear Editor

Good evening, I live in Earls Barton and organise the ClassicCar and Bike Meet at White's Nurseries on the lastWednesday of every month from May to September. In ourfirst year we attracted over 125 vehicles at each "meet". Theidea behind the "meet" is to enable likeminded enthusiasts totalk about anything and everything to do with cars.

I wondered if it would be possible for me to advertise thisevent in Barton Today?

Kind regards Eliza Morgan

Glad to be of help. Perhaps we will be able to hear more aboutthis event in a future edition of Barton Today.

ChurchWill you please pass on to Whom It May Concern, that I think

that the Planned Giving Cards in the pews at All Saints church

are a brilliant idea? For years I have stood there watching

people with the offertory plate deciding whether to approach

a pew or not, unsure if the members of the congregation

already gave by Standing Order or not. Now there is no

problem! We can all show that we have something to give to

the church.

Brilliant! Other churches, please note.

So the world of technology has arrived at All Saints with some

church members committing to standing orders…

A Message from NigelDear Friends,

Only once before in its history has this nation celebrated amonarch’s Diamond Jubilee. In 1897 Queen Victoria had reignedfor 60 years, and the nation celebrated with great gusto. Thenation’s slogan for that Jubilee was “Peace and Plenty.”

Now we are getting ready to celebrate with enthusiasm ourselves, though maybe for most of us, with an eye to the bank account andthe uncertainties of the future. I don’t think “Peace and Plenty”would be our country’s watchword for these times, although itwould be good to remind ourselves of where we have ‘travelled’over these last 60 years and what, at our best, we can achieve.

To have had our Queen on the throne for such a long time hasgiven our nation stability and a fixed reference point. For manypeople today, Queen Elizabeth II is the only monarch we have everknown. What gives the Queen stability and points of fixedreference in her own life?

Well, as the recent documentary by Andrew Marr showed, herlong lasting marriage and family life are vital to her. However whatis not often mentioned, but demonstrated every Christmas Day, isher personal and deeply-held faith.

As Head of the Church of England, and Defender of the Faith, theQueen only preaches one sermon a year, but far more people listento it than to any preached by local clergy. She leaves no-one in anydoubt that for her, Jesus and his teachings are a treasured part ofher life.

So as we celebrate this rare and special occasion, a DiamondJubilee, let us hold on to the thought that what has kept the Queengoing through all the joys and sorrows of her life, can sustain andsupport us now and in the future.

Have a Good Time!Nigel
