Appreciation Letter from Elaine Cant Hi,
Here is a little story first!
My driver awareness class has been cancelled over about a 6 months period
forvarious reasons.
When arranging to go on the last official date of the course, I said to Richard
hopefully this will go ahead this time, and explained that I am a shift worker and
have had to take annual leavefor all previous dates and for the new date, Richard
then asked if I could email my shifts to him just in case, I thought Ok?
Well unfortunately due to the rain the official date was cancelled and Richard
then said ok I’ve checked you’re shifts and you are not working on 31st August, we
will book in for that day, I thought shite, cool!
Well it FINALLY HAPPENED! I would like to put a BIG BIG HUGE THANK YOU
to Richard Cowell, for thinking out of the square and working around my shifts and
finally getting The Cancelled Girl off the list.
Met up with Richard and also Brian (who was having a refresher) at Woollies at
Lake Cathie, as I had no idea where Richard was talking about where the DA would
take place. Brian and I had a wee chat in the carpark waiting for Richard, and I
explained to Brian how green I am, don’t even know how to work my radio, he said
no worries we’ll get that sorted
Set off about 9.15am where I followed Richard, with Brian behind me and headed
for Dooragan National Park, we had a wee drive around to our picnic area where
the lesson was going to be, and what a beautiful spot it was, I had no idea how
close to home we have such beautiful places.
Banda Newsletter | September 2014 Page 7
When we arrived there a guy (sorry can’t remember his name) on a motor bike also
arrived who knew Brian and they talked a lot about different bits and bats on
4wds and other car stuff (I had no idea really what they were talking about!) and
the Nissan Hilux got a few jibs (that’s the make of my 4WD!) but I listened
quietly.
Anyway we went through the DT Manual with Brian and
Richard taking turns each reading out loud, and explaining very well to me when
they saw the ‘blank’ look on my face. We had a few laughs and Brian (I bought a
jeep, Brian!) shared a few stories and pics from his iPad which was very
interesting, Brian also printed off a complete guide to heading off-road, which
was a great read. Learnt a lot, and some of the information, e.g. twigs and sticks
I never even thought about, I also have LOTS AND LOTS more to learn and read
up on, by the end of the manual my head was spinning, and I might add the Hilux
got a few other jibs, I’m thinking shite what have I bought! The other thing that
stuck in my head from Brian, when out 4WD and you’re not sure ‘have a cup of
tea,’ basically stop assess, take your time and do it right, so I thought to myself
well I’ll be having lots of cups of tea’s After the DT we went for a wee drive and boy can that Richard drive, I was
trying to keep up with him, so whatever Richard done, I followed, but I was
basically up his arse which I realised later that’s a no no! Richard also said that
we would go up Big Brother, which I thought how cool! Anyway we were driving and
I said to Richard when do we get to BB, he then smiled and said you are going up it
now, shite I thought to myself, anyway went up over a few bumps going up the hill
and the last bump was a cracker, and the noises that was coming from under my
car, my heart was racing, Richard got told me to go in gear 1 and we had a
Banda Newsletter | September 2014 Page 8
Anyway we did get over it and got to the top, all safe and sound with a busted
sensor wire on the Hilux, Brian followed and said if his wife was in the car she
would have got out and walked, and Brian shook my hand congratulating me, what
can I say GO THE HILUX ! Mind you won’t attempt to go up there on my own! And
what a beautiful stop that is as well. On the way down on the big bump Richard
and I had another
And we all safely got to the bottom
So again I would like to say a HUGE big THAKYOU to Richard, the club is very
lucky to have him and also to Brian, it was a pleasure. Oh they both said it’s a good
idea to do a couple of DT training courses, which I agree especially someone like
me that is totally green in 4WD world, looking forward to learning.
Oh, I also know now what my car needs is lifts, so if my mate Darren at MC4WD is
reading this, looking forward to your big warm heart giving the wee Scottish lass
,that always asks for help in folding up her rooftop tent, even though he has
shown me 10million times!!!!
50-75% discount.
I hear Darren doing!
Anyway, had a great day, and again thanks Richard and Brian (I bought a jeep)
Elaine, and again go the Hilux!

Father’s Day Trip Report
Our trip consisting of 18 vehicles started at the donut on Father’s Day at 8am. We gathered
together on Beechwood Rd (Wauchope Showground) so that the convoy was organised and Allen
and Maureen could join
us. From there we
headed off to Fire Tower
#1 turning on Bellangry
Rd at Beechwood and
then onto Hastings Forest
Way. At the Fire Tower
Lookout we all settled
down to morning tea
enjoying the vista and the
threatening thunderstorm
approaching.
Tony Lievore once again looked after all the kids by supplying flavoured Norco Milk. My kids have
started asking if “the milk man” is going on these trips before asking if other kids are attending.
Following a nice morning tea
we then headed off to the
Wilsons River Reserve. From
Hastings Forest Way we then
turned off onto Wilsons River
Rd and onto the Reserve.
Once we created 18 parking
spots, majority of us
commenced the 3.5km
round trip walk passing the
magnificent strangler fig,
then through sub-tropical
and warm temperate
rainforest, to a waterfall and pool. Having thoroughly enjoyed the walk we then sat down to a nice
BBQ lunch.
Banda Newsletter | September 2014 Page 15
We then left the Reserve
and headed on to
Beechwood via a detour
along Pappinbarra Rd which
closely follows the
Pappinbarra River and
included two very scenic
river crossings.
Once in Beechwood we
settled in for a beer or two
at the Beechwood Hotel
with some nice background
music provided by Cheryl.
The trip was very successful with all enjoying the company, scenery and trivia questions. Thanks to
all that attended this trip.
Please check out Luke’s professional pictures on our website.
