Upcoming Events From the Principal Lindisfarne received the NAPLAN results this week for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The individual results for each student will be mailed out this week. Please take the time to look at your child’s results and give positive feedback. Also remember that their performance in a one off test is just that – a snapshot at a particular point in time. It does not reflect the breadth and depth of your child’s education. The staff will be looking closely at the results to analyse overall patterns as well as individual performance. If, for any reason, you do not receive the results, please contact the School. At the Years 5 -11 assembly this week, there was an opportunity to acknowledge the successes of a number of students: those who achieved excellent results in the ICAS Digital Technologies Assessment, the Australian History Competition and in a range of sporting competitions including the NCIS Athletics at Coffs Harbour. At the Assembly I also spoke to the students about a panel discussion I attended recently at a conference in Adelaide where there were representatives from schools across Australia and New Zealand. The panel consisted of five students, two current and three ex-students from one of the schools hosting the conference. All of the students were refugees and/or asylum seekers who through generous support were offered the opportunity to be educated at this very good school in central Adelaide. Two of the girls came from Afghanistan; they met on a boat that left Indonesia for Australia in 2000 and eventually ended up at the Woomera Detention Centre. Then their families were placed on temporary visas, one for three years, the other for seven years. They spoke of their uncertainty of not knowing whether they would be allowed to stay and the relief when they were granted residency. Both girls are now doing Business degrees. Another girl, now in Year 9, came from Iran and she, too, with her family came by boat, followed by a month on Christmas Island before being sent to a detention centre. She has now been in Australia for two years. The final two girls came from Africa: the first girl came to Australia as a refugee after fleeing her home in Liberia firstly to the Ivory Coast and finally to Guinea Conakry. She had a child at the age of fourteen. When she started at the school, she was in Year 11 and her daughter in Kindergarten. You can imagine the scene of both mother and daughter going off to school in identical school uniforms. This young woman is now studying nursing at university. Finally the last girl, now in Year 12, came from Kenya with her mother and three sisters. Her mother had fled Rwanda as a result of the genocide there and waited sixteen years in Kenya to be granted refugee status. All five girls spoke of their commitment to their education and the value they placed on it. Having known the horrors of displacement, war and violence, they had such appreciation for the safety, security and support they encountered in Australia. As I explained to the Lindisfarne students, it is a timely reminder of the extraordinary richness we have in Australia where young people have the opportunity to realise their potential in a peaceful and secure environment. Thank you to all those parents, staff and students who have worked so hard to ensure the success of Funfest. It will be a great community day and one I know that will be enjoyed by all. Whole School NewsG&T CoordinatorOn Monday 17 August we welcomed Mrs Nancy Wines to the Lindisfarne staff. Mrs Wines will work with staff and students across both campuses.

Introducing Nancy WinesIt is my pleasure to introduce myself as the new Gifted and Talented Coordinator for Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School.

I hold a Bachelor of English with Honours from Plymouth University, a Post Graduate-Certificate in Education from Nottingham University and the Certificate of Gifted Education from GERRIC at the UNSW. I have

also recently completed a course on Autism at Swinburne University. I have been a qualified teacher for sixteen years and am continuing my education with the Masters of Gifted Education.

My aim is the creation of a sustainable, nurturing environment for students of high potential, unique abilities and talents at Lindisfarne, whilst also meeting their cognitive needs and abilities. My belief is that the social-emotional development and support is equally as important as academic opportunity.

I really look forward to working with both my colleagues and the students at Lindisfarne.

Nancy Wines, Gifted and Talented Coordinator

Of these fifty students, twenty two have been selected to walk the Kokoda Trail. We are delighted to announce that not only have the five students from Lindisfarne been selected to travel to Papua New Guinea but they have all also been selected to walk the Kokoda Trail.

Congratulations to the following students on this outstanding achievement:

• Jack Jones• Eirenne Donnelly• Mia Tarantini• Jade Wardle• Tiffani Seaton.

Year 11 Senior Induction Service – Change of Date

Please note – this change of date for the Year 11 Senior Induction Service. The service will now be held on

Science NewsYear 12 Chemistry students Yasmine Sutcliffe, Kristopher Smart and Lucas Rossedeutcher won the silver award at the Chemistry Titration Competition for the Northern Rivers hosted by Southern Cross University at the end of June. Their team, “Triple Rince”, was one of five teams of three students, each from the Year 12 Chemistry class, who contested the regional event sponsored by the Royal Australian Chemical Institute. This is a difficult competition that requires a unique combination of laboratory skill and mathematical ability. They now advance to the National Finals where they have to conduct a titration under supervision here at Lindisfarne and submit their results by the end of October. We congratulate them on their success and wish them well in the finals of this demanding competition.

Congratulations are also extended to Clark Long (Year 8), Brody Pullinger (Year 10), Laurence Simic-Bentley (Year 8), and Jett Taylor (Year 7), who all achieved a High Distinction on last semester’s International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS ) Science Competition. This places them in the top 1% of all candidates who sat the examination and, bearing in mind that each year group cohort includes over 20,000 students, they should feel justifiably proud of their achievement.

Year 10 students are working on their Individual Student Research Project this term with reports due 7 September. They are required to come up with a topic, research it, carry out a valid scientific investigation and write up their results in a practical report using accepted conventions. We appreciate the disruption this may cause at home with odd pieces of food mouldering away in the corner or plants appearing on windowsills in various states of distress and we thank you for your forbearance.

The first group of Year 10 students who undertook the accelerated Physics program is now preparing for their Trial Higher School Certificate examinations. This is a trailblazing class and we wish them every success now and in Term Four with their final examinations.

The Science faculty is planning to start regular stargazing evenings at the Mahers Lane campus during the second half of Term 3 and into Term 4. Watch the newsletter for updates or ask Mr Marriott or Mr Inksetter for details.

Hamish Inksetter, Science Coordinator

English and History FacultyThe Simpson PrizeThe Simpson Prize is a national competition for Years 9 and 10 History students. It encourages participants to focus on the significance of ANZAC Day and to consider what ANZAC Day means to them and to Australia. Student winners, runners-up and teacher chaperones enjoy a two-day trip to Canberra where they visit several of the capital’s museums and institutions, attend the presentation ceremony at Parliament House and enjoy a formal dinner at the Royal Military College, Duntroon.

The 2016 trip hinges on the question below, due 15 October, 2015.

‘The landing at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915 is often given prominence in accounts of the Gallipoli campaign. What other events or experiences of the campaign would you argue require more attention? Why?’

The task may be an essay (1500 word limit) or an audio visual presentation of no more than ten minutes, accompanied by a written explanation of up to four hundred words. Details of entry at http://www.simpsonprize.org or see Mrs Makepeace.

Jan Makepeace, History Coordinator

Poetry Recitation Competition EveningThursday 3 September provides a fantastic opportunity for the Lindisfarne community to celebrate the ability of students to engage an audience as finalists deliver their chosen poems. Besides listening to expressive poetry performances from students in Years 1 to 12, guests will be entertained with musical recitals. A light supper will also be provided at intermission.

Stages 1, 2, 3 and 6 finalists are still being determined. However, the following students are congratulated on their success at the Stage 4 and 5 semi-finals:

Stage 4:

Brayden Courtney Kodey Edgar Farrell Kipp Freeman Ella McDonald Jade Reid

Stage 5:

To raise awareness about the benefits of eating vegies Lindisfarne is participating in the Big Vegie Crunch. This is an attempt to set a record for the greatest number of children eating vegetables at a given time.
