A Letter from the Editors

As we return refreshed from fall break, some of us are ready to tackle another set of exams, while others

continue to put o! work on their senior theses. Either way, we’re all just biding our time until "anksgiving,

when we can stu! our faces and avoid those awkward questions our families ask us about what we want to do

with our liberal arts degrees.

Celebrations of Barnard’s 125th year continue, and while we appreciate how our college has changed over its

lifespan, we still feel that more progress is necessary. With the recent decision of fellow women’s colleges such

as Mount Holyoke and Mills to accept transgender students who identify as female, many wonder if Barnard

will follow suit. "e College has maintained the position that it reviews applications on a case-by-case basis,

but many on campus feel that the administration should make its admissions policies more open to students

who were not born biologically female. Our centerpiece explores this important issue in greater detail.

Other articles you’ll #nd this month will update you on the increasing presence of diversity in mainstream

television and show you where to #nd the secret gardens of New York City. You’ll also get a sneak peak at the

hottest movies preceding awards season. We hope that this thought-provoking edition of "e Bulletin will

keep you mentally satiated until you can #ll your belly with Grandma Maude’s turkey.

Happy reading and eating!

The Moto-Chic JacketWant an edgy coat to enhance your out!t and reveal your at-titude? If so, say yes to leather jackets. Go for one that stands

out with its embellished shoulders or ribbed arms. Don’t be afraid to embrace color – we’re loving brown and hunter green

leather this season. You can also achieve a more complex and chic look by throwing on a cropped leather jacket detailed with

rose gold hardware over a graphic tee and classic jeans.

The Amplified Trench CoatEven if you’re looking for a unique coat this fall, don’t avoid this classic – we’ve heard it’s getting a makeover. Find a trench coat that is ampli!ed with contrasting color-blocked patterns or tough leather sleeves. If you’re searching for something more feminine, try a trench with a "ared bottom and a knotted belt to enhance your natural waist.

The Parka Jacket!e parka jacket is the ultimate laissez-faire, cool girl coat since it makes ev-ery out"t look e#ortlessly trendy. !e drawstring waist, oversized pockets, and fur-lined hood give this jacket an understated character. Try contrasting a parka jacket with a fancy skater skirt and a pair of knee-high socks. !e thick fur lin-ing will keep you warm as this mild fall transitions into a frigid winter.

The Bomber JacketYou don’t need to date a jock to score one of these sporty jackets. Bomber jack-ets in $oral prints and neon colors o#er a unique twist on the traditional varsity style. For a cozy fall look, choose a quilted cotton bomber as your go-to coat.

In this photo project, we aim to illustrate how individuals of all diverse back-

grounds feel pressure under the strain of societal norms. We hope to give a

voice to those who feel unfairly silenced by outdated bureaucratic rulings.

Page 19: Barnard Bulletin November 2014

“While my story can’t be told through these boxes I also often-

times get frustrated and want to not have to report my identity,

wondering if it’s too complicated, or too unbelievable for the form-

reader to try to imagine. I don’t want to seem like I’m lying to the

reader, but I also don’t want to try to fix my multiethnicity into a

single box or marked category because I do not fit.”

“I think the most important thing for all people to

realize is that there are different kinds of people and

our intersections of identity don’t make us ‘more’ or

‘less’ of whatever gender we identify as.”

“I agreed to participate in this photo project because I often find it hard

to identify myself as a mixed person, since categories of ‘Hispanic white’

and ‘non-Hispanic white,’ ‘mixed/multiethnic,’ ‘Asian,’ or ‘other’ don’t

adequately tell my racial and ethnic story.”

The article, which refers to Viola Davis as “less classically beauti-ful” and calls Rhimes’ leads “in-

example of a much larger, more insidious prejudice: a resistance

to multifaceted female characters, especially women of color.

Sounds of

For many students, music and studying go hand-in-hand. The playlist

for any study session always greatly impacts the studying experi-

ence. New scientific evidence suggests that there are benefits to lis-

tening to music while studying. In addition, Daniel Levintin, a psycholo-

gist studying the neuroscience of music at McGill University, discovered

that music can actually be more effective in calming the anxiety of pre-

surgery patients than anti-anxiety drugs. Music’s anxiety-reducing effects

can help students stressing over term papers and problem sets.

Clifford Nass, a professor at Stanford University, explains that

the issue is a little more complex. While music can have a positive effect

on a person’s mood, if listened to while studying, music can divide the

student’s attention and potentially make the studying less effective. How-

ever, Nass suggests that if music relieves one’s stress and makes studying

more enjoyable, it may be worth sacrificing focus. He also admits that

in today’s world, social media and the internet can be great distractions,

so music may be a better alternative to constantly checking Facebook or

Twitter. It depends on the individual and what helps them to studying ef-

fectively.

I personally prefer different genres of music while working on differ-

ent subjects. When writing papers on a humanities topic, I listen to pop music.

I find that the catchy lyrics and familiar beats of the music currently playing on

the mainstream radio are just the energizer I need when trying to come up with

fresh ideas on an ancient novel or piece of art. A couple of my favorites are Jason

Derulo with his fast paced beats and smooth voice and Maroon 5 with their classic

sound and sing-along choruses.

When working on math problem sets, I tend to listen to rap music. I’m

pretty sure that I’m allergic to anything involving numbers, so the poetry and

even beats of rap tend to settle me down and get me to focus on the equations.

I’m a huge Drake fan, as I enjoy his clever lyrics and clear sound. I also love Ken-

drick Lamar’s speedy rhythms.

Then of course, comes studying for tests. My preference is EDM, or

any type of Electronica music. The incredible beats and pump-up feel of David

Guetta, Avicii, and the like help motivate me to study for the midterm I have been

avoiding for days.

So whether you prefer these recommendations, have your own set playl-

ist that is your holy grail, or just prefer silence when studying, good luck and keep

jamming out!

Designers of the 20th and 21st centuries were and are innovators, but it turns out many of those eras’ fashions

built on already established styles from the 17th and 18th centuries.

JLaw is back as everyone’s favorite bow-and-arrow-wielding protagonist in this highly-anticipated installment in the Hunger Games series. Mockingjay, Part I takes Katniss to the clandestine District 13. There, she collaborates with rebel leader President Coin (portrayed by Julianne Moore) in an attempt to save her friend and love interest, Peeta (Josh Hutcherson), who the Capitol has been using as a weapon against the rebellion. With Kiwi pop hit-maker Lorde contributing to the soundtrack, you’ll have one more reason to see the movie, if the story and special effects weren’t enough.

Fall Movie Breakdown

Between Gravity and Guardians of the Galaxy, it’s been a good year for the final frontier. The next big blockbuster to launch us into space is Interstellar. Hollywood A-listers Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chas-tain, and Michael Caine team up to tell the story of a group of space travelers who journey through the cosmos via wormhole. Directed by Christopher Nolan, known for epics such as Inception and The Dark Knight, and inspired by the research of theoretical physicist Kip Thorne, this odyssey looks like it will be worth the hype.

Those who like their science a bit more down to earth, blended with romance and heartbreak, should check out The Theory of Everything. Directed by documentary vet James Marsh and starring Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones, Theory chronicles the relationship between the celebrated theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking and Jane Wilde, the literature student he fell in love with during his years at Cambridge in the ‘60s and later married. With Wilde’s memoir, Traveling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen Hawking, as source material, the film doesn’t shy away from exploring Hawking’s struggle with his motor neuron disease, which drastically impaired his speech and his ability to walk. The result is a compelling story that strikes a balance between joy and despair. Plus, with his lopsided grin and thick-framed glasses, Redmayne as Hawking is uncanny.

Steve Carell’s turn as real-life multimillionaire and murderer John du Pont, who killed Olympic Wrestler Dave Schultz, will chill you. In director Bennett Miller’s Foxcatcher, also featuring Mark Ruffalo and Channing Tatum (as Schultz and his brother Mark, respectively), Carell is a man transformed. All traces of Michael Scott are buried beneath a prosthetic nose and an unsettling, almost disaffected cadence. If the preview is any indication, Carell is a believable schizophrenic.

Following his portrayal of notorious WikiLeaks mastermind Julian Assange, Benedict Cumberbatch stars in another big-budget biopic (coincidentally, he has also played Stephen Hawking in a BBC TV drama). This time the fandom-favorite actor of high cheekbone renown appears as the British mathematician and computer scientist Alan Turing in The Imitation Game, helmed by Norwegian director Morten Tyldum. Based on Andrew Hodges’ biography, Alan Turing: The Enigma, the flick is set during World War II and follows Turing and his ragtag team of academics and logicians as they try to decipher the Nazis’ Enigma code from the confines of the top-secret Government Code and Cypher School at Bletchley Park. Keira Knightley co-stars as Turing’s fellow code-breaker, Joan Clarke.

Out this month are a handful of high-profile features for your cinematic enjoyment. Escape into futuristic sci-fi and fantasy worlds, or get a dose of history (with helpings of romance, drama, and intrigue).

Tired of breakfast at Hewitt, but not will-ing to spend a fortune

to pretend you’re Blair Waldorf at Sarabeth’s? Not to worry, Manhattan offers all its brunch-crazed citizens many options in between! I am an avid brunch- goer myself and recently visited The Smith, a casual American brasserie that has a great menu. The Smith has three different lo-cations in Manhattan, but I went to the restaurant in Lincoln Cen-ter. It’s the closest one to cam-pus, but it’s still far enough for those of you who want to step out of the UWS bubble. On a Friday morning,

I made my way to The Smith. I was seated immediately because there wasn’t a huge crowd and the restaurant is spacious. This is definitely a plus, especially in comparison to popular SoHo brunch spots that may serve de-licious avocado toasts and acai bowls, but make you wait for hours on end just to sit down. The décor of the restaurant is nicely done but not too fancy and creates a modern American diner feel. As recommended by a friend, I ordered the Vanilla Bean French Toast ($12).For those of you craving a savory dish in the morning, she also recommends

the Potato Waffle Benedict ($16). My dish came a quick ten to fifteen minutes after order-ing it and my French toast was delicious! The bread was thick and cooked perfectly -– crunchy on the outside and fluffy and soft on the inside. I could taste the vanilla, but it wasn’t sicken-ingly sweet. Just make sure not to put on too much maple syrup! The caramelized bananas were a good final touch, adding a sweet fruity taste to top off the meal. Overall, I had a lovely experi-ence dining at The Smith and will certainly come back to try other options, especially since I know it won’t hurt my wallet.

THE BULLETIN  -  35  -  November 2014

New York City’s history can be found in a plethora of loca-tions and the city’s real estate

is surely no exception. One of the finest historical houses, the Morgan Library & Museum, spans half of a block on East 36th Street and can be accessed for free with a Barnard ID. Large in stature and eclectic in architectural style, the mu-seum consists of the classical building that originally served as John Pierpont Morgan’s library, a construction known as the Annex, and the nineteenth centu-ry brownstone on 37th Street that was the home of his son, J.P. Morgan Jr. As an American banker and philanthropist, J.P. Morgan was an integral figure in consolidating various banks and electric companies into large, singular corpora-tions. He was also an avid collector of art and literature. Each building in the museum is connected internally to re-veal a series of galleries, archives, and reading rooms that reflect the various intellectual pursuits of one of America’s industrial forefathers. The library’s lobby features an installment by Spencer Finch entitled “A Certain Slant of Light.” Finch has ap-plied various colored films to the four stories of glass windows in the library to create a dynamic, seasonally-colored calendar. Although this modern piece initially appears to contradict the oth-erwise traditional nature of the house’s reading rooms and galleries, it immedi-ately draws the visitor into the library by being eye-catching and interactive. The first floor also houses the East Room, which displays three floors of Morgan’s books. Highlights include elaborate murals positioned above the fireplace and three copies of the Guten-berg Bible, a significant feat given that

only fifty copies of the Gutenberg Bible exist today. Although tattered and torn, the Bible serves as a reminder of the progress made in Western publishing. Unsurprisingly, opposite to the East Room is the West Room, which served as Morgan’s study. Morgan was known to meet with various art deal-ers and colleagues in this dimly lit room lined with red velvet wallpaper and dec-orated with matching red velvet love-seats. A step further in-side the West Room reveals M o r g a n ’ s private book vault which p r e s e r v e s m e d i e v a l manuscripts, original mu-sic scores by Mozart and other notable composer s, and the pri-vate letters of various well-known individuals. Although the West Room is beautiful in its extravagance and dis-play of Renaissance paintings, the most outstanding aspect of the house is the library’s Rotunda. The Rotunda was designed in 1906 by architect Charles McKim and it comprises the entrance hall to Morgan’s private library. With delicately painted ceiling art by Henry Siddons Mowbray, the Rotunda is remi-niscent of a church from the Italian Re-naissance. While most of the first floor showcases the history, preservation, and restoration of Morgan’s library and

house, the second floor contains galler-ies with rotating exhibits that vary in style. One particularly unique exhibit entitled “From Here to Here: Richard McGuire Makes a Book,” details the cre-ative process of this important illustra-tor. McGuire became famous following the publication of his comic “Here” in RAW Magazine in 1989. He went on to publish a second edition of “Here” as a graphic novel and e-book and this

exhibit showcases McGuire’s sketches from his original comic publication and from his new pursuit. Located in a beautiful neighbor-hood just 20 minutes away by subway, a visit to the Morgan is an exceptional way to familiarize oneself with New York City through art and history. With a stunning facade and classic interior decor, the aesthetics of the library are worth the trek to the East Side. Com-plete with art pieces and historical arti-facts dating from the 1800s to the 21st century, this historical house is a must-see for those with eclectic interests.

Secret Gardens

As of late, a serious crime has been taking place at night behind the gates of Columbia and Barnard. The crime is

that of the un-apprehended Hydrangea Stealers. Who can blame these criminals, when these gorgeous flowers

make such beautiful dried bouquets that brighten up one’s dreary dorm room? It’s so tempting to pluck crimson

and white flowers from the stunning array of the green hydrangea bushes that grace our campus. The lavender that blooms

outside of Riverside Church is equally irresistible, as is the white Dogwood that grows in Butler’s shadow. In nature, we

find both the harmonious joy of collective replenishment as well as the comfort of interior connections. Walking amongst

the verdure, we seem to glean a glimpse of ourselves in the shade of a wilting Morning Glory or in the enrapturing smell of

Calla Lilies. We all seek to discover the pleasures of our own secret gardens and we may start by simply sensing the abundant

floral beauty that surrounds us on our very campus.

of NYC

However, seeking transcendentalism through nature may also require exiting the gates of our institutions

and entering the many gardens hidden throughout this concrete jungle. At the Noguchi Museum in

Queens, sanctuary, nature, thought, essence, and the idea of being all can be found amidst its

zen rock gardens. Exhale the stress of midterm mania by experiencing the warmth of

the stone sculptures found here. Bathe yourself in the solitude of the untrodden

rocks and open yourself up to the exquisiteness of a natural element that

we so often overlook in their search for lush, green Romanticism.

Who said that all gardens had to be verdant and dewy? Can’t

a drier landscape of rocks, moss, and trees also show

us the essence of nature? Meditate on the raked

rocks and tranquil sculpture art to find

the simple beauty of bare rock.

However, if you are feeling nostalgic for pictur-

esque English gardens, lose yourself in the Wild Garden of

Wave Hill, designed by William Robinson in the spirit of the

truly English “natural” aesthetic. Located in the Bronx, the

Wild Garden climbs atop the hillside peak of Wave Hill and

no matter how obvious its charm may appear, one may never

truly discover all the delights of exploring a place where nature

seems to have planted its own beauty. If there is one thing worth

the hike up the hill, it is to see the maiden grass shimmering in

the autumn winds.

Furthermore, if one is in search of a self-remedy, rejuve-

nation can be found in the mystical garden of St. John’s or in the

conveniently close secret pathways of St. Luke’s. Cellphone use is

prohibited, so sit amongst the many benches and grasp onto the

warmth of the last grace of golden foliage before the gray months

of winter.
