MAY 2018 Vol. XXXIII No. 5 The Barnard Bulletin EAST BARNARD YARD SALE To Feature 16 Households by Virginia Glass Schlaabach When I wrote my last column on March 17, I wrote hope- fully that the snow from our third nor’easter would leave the landscape well before our April 21 grounds clean-up day at the Community Hall. That’s only a few days away and, although the earlier snow was mostly gone by last week, it’s April 17 and the ground is white again from another late snow and ice storm and it’s snowing again. Still, we hope to be able to clean up the village green on Saturday and clean up our roadsides on Green-Up Day and - as I wrote last month - we anticipate better conditions by May 19, the date of our big community-wide yard sale. (Hope does spring eternal….) Green-Up Day, Saturday, May 5: Joani Yankee, who is heading up the efforts in East Barnard, says: “Most of the roads from the village are already assigned, but we can always use a few more hardy folks to help spruce things up along our beautiful roadways.” Call Joani at 763-8627 for information on how you can be involved. Community-Wide Yard Sale, Saturday May 19, 8:00 a.m.- 3:00 p.m, rain or shine: To date, 16 households are planning to sell on-site at their homes so there will be lots of treasures to be found! Maps showing all the locations can be picked up at the Community Hall, where there will also be some vendors as well as a Community Club table selling quilt raffle tickets, tee shirts, and the remaining reprints of the 1976 East Barnard history books. Hungry shoppers can stop at The Little Brick across the road, where Sue Schlabach and Ryan Newswanger will sell breakfast food, including homemade baked goods and coffee, from 8:00-11:00. Although many people joke that you can’t get to East Bar- nard from Barnard or anywhere else, just follow the yard sale directional signs that will lead you to the village from Barnard, Pomfret, and Sharon. This sale benefits our village as all participants will give a portion of their earnings to the Community Club, sponsors of the event, to be used for local projects. Need additional information? Contact Fred Schlabach ([email protected]) or Joani Yankee (763-8627). Other Upcoming Events: The first community potluck of the summer season will be held at the Community Hall on Sunday, May 27, and the first service of the summer at the East Barnard Church is on June 10. To keep up-to-date on events, check the Community Club website: ebvtcc. wixsite.com/ebvtcc Pictured below are Mary Croft, Paige Gibbs, and Marlene Rand tying the East Barnard Community Club’s 2018 raffle quilt, “Star Mosaic”. The finished quilt will be displayed during the May 19 yard sale, where tickets will go on sale for the first time. The raffle drawing will take place at the Largely Local Dinner on September 9. LOCAL CRYPTOGRAMA cryptogram is a code in which one letter is substituted for another. For example, the word “Church” could be written BWMSBW. The letter B would be the letter C and would be throughout the entire message. In this message N = S. The solution is found by trial and error.

“K D X E N P D Z J A N T Z C X E- P C J G,

O G P B D X P G X P C D Q N Y T Z C K,

O C X P G Z B F C K K C X E P F G K Y T

D H M G Z A J Y A; I Q P Y P K G X E P F

P F G N G Y N D X D H N Q J J G Z W D G N

B D J G.”

- P F D J Y N B Y Z K A K

The answer to the CRYPTOGRAM can be found on the inside of the back page.

NEWS FROM HELPING HANDSWill spring ever really come? George doesn’t look as though he will fall through the ice any time soon. I think the latest he has fallen in is April 25th, but he may break that record this year. There were people out on the ice fishing this past weekend. And will the snow along the roadways be melted in time for our annual Green-Up Day clean-up?

Speaking of which, Barnard’s Green-Up Day is scheduled for Saturday, May 5th and will be coordinated by Helping Hands. We hope many of you will sign up to help pick up the trash that litters our roadsides. Trash bags will be available for pick up at the Barnard General Store between 8 and 11 AM on the 5th. Watch for an e-mail on the list serve to direct you to Sign-Up Genius to sign up for your clean-up area or sign up when you pick up your bags. You will then be entered into a raffle for one of two $25 gift cards for the BGS. Participants will also receive a voucher, good for that day only, for a BGS cup of coffee, tea or hot chocolate and a mini muffin. Full bags can be put in the dump trailer at the BGS or taken to the recycling center. Please remember to wear gloves and sturdy shoes. Joani Yankee is in charge of the East Barnard clean-up, so please call her at 763-8627, if you would like to help. If you have any questions, please call Mary at 234-5541.

Our local food shelves are still serving a record number of individuals and families. Many thanks to all of you who add food to our collection box at the BGS. Please help us keep it filled to overflowing. There are many in our com-munity who depend on both the Woodstock and Bethel Food Shelves to supplement their food needs. Here is a list of items that are always needed: pasta and pasta sauce, hot and cold cereal, canned tuna, canned soups and stews, canned and packaged meals, peanut butter, jam and jelly, coffee and tea, mayo and ketchup and personal care items such as shampoo, toothpaste and toilet paper. Thank you for supporting the food shelves!

Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you or someone you know could use a helping hand. We have people ready and willing to help. If the job is too big for us to handle, we can refer you to other available resources.
