Bridge Assessment and Reconnaissance Team

Introduction:

Route reconnaissance is an important issue for NATO

forces in order to maintain freedom of movement.

When it comes to facilitating friendly movements, the

most efficient and intelligent approach is to make use of

the existing transportation infrastructure.

But in foreign territories not many or no technical plans or

documents are available.

Although the engineer commander in NATO is supposed to

provide reliable information on the carrying capacities of

bridges.

Levels and Methods of Assessment:

• Levels of expertise of the Assessment Team

• Levels of reliability of the Assessment

Procedure

• Aim: Understand who did the reconnaissance

and assessment and with which procedure + make

exchange of information and documentation possible

Reconnaissance for an Assessment Team with Expertise LEVEL C:

• Route Recce Form (STANAG 2021)

• Bridge Reconnaissance Report (BEL)

• Specialised Reconnaissance Reports (Tailored to the mission)

• Specialised equipment:

Hilti Ferroscan: to visualize rebarbs in concrete Sauter durometer: to determine tensile strenght of metal

Leica Tele Lasermeter: mesures distances Krautkramer scelometer: to determine strength of concrete

Assessment: Bridge Assessment Documents, Programs and Methods
