Even though for me school is a thing of the past, I can still bring myself back to that magical moment min-utes before the last bell of the year rings. That delightful anticipation makes me tingle even now. Whether it be elementary school, middle school, high school or even college, there is little that compares to the feeling of massive contentment when school first lets out for the summer!

I love summer; it’s my favorite season! It’s all about the ocean for me. I never make it to the beach as much as I would like, but I do try. I think kids love summer because it means no studying, but honest-ly, what compares to the freedom of summer - running around in bathing suits, jumping in back yard pools, spraying siblings and friends with the hose, impromptu water balloon fights, making sand castles, riding the ocean waves.

There are so many exciting activities for you and your kids right here in 4S Ranch -- from the community pool and splash park to Movies At The Park and Boys & Girls Club Camps.

We hope you enjoy the articles inside these pages that are designed to help parents keep their kids mov-ing in a forward direction this summer. Learn some great tips from Krista Hahn, School Psychologist at Monterey Ridge Elementary. You might also be

inspired to do some gardening with the kids after you read Katie Seidenwurm’s article.

Of course, June doesn’t just ring in the beginning of sum-mer; it also hosts a few other very important events: Father’s Day and Graduation! Both are very special in their own way. Dads deserve to be recognized, so from all of us at Back At The Ranch - Happy Father’s Day! Graduation Day means differ-ent things for different fami-lies. You’d be amazed at how many varieties of graduations are

going on -- college, high school, middle school, elemen-tary school and even pre-k! If you know a graduate, give them a high five. They’ve worked hard and achieved success!

Graduation Time!

Congrats to all the 8th graders as they grad-uate from middle school and look ahead to high school. Some are looking at it with trepidation and some will waltz right in seamlessly. We wish you all the best in your journey to high school in the fall. For now, CONGRATULATIONS and enjoy your summer. We’ll leave you with some inspiring words from Emma Schmitt, herself an eager yet nervous new Del Norte Freshman. This is her Oak Valley Middle School 8th grade speech which all 8th graders were expected to write.

I have learned that you should never surrender or give up to a small bump in the road

because it will only take you further if you get past it.

So, on the f irst day of 6th grade, I didn’t come here as prepared as I wanted and started

freaking out because I blanked on what my parents and I had gone over a million times. Where

are my classes? Who’s my teacher? Where am I supposed to be for f irst period? These questions

went through my head as if it were on a never ending racetrack while I walked in circles looking

for someone - ANYONE - that could tell me where to go. But f inally, right when the bell rang,

I found a friend that was going to the same place and we walked to the class together. Later, my

friend and I found our class and we weren’t the only ones that had gotten lost, either.

As I went through my years in middle school, I thought of each achievement as a step for-

ward or up the stairs to success. We start at the bottom and are gradually and continuously mak-

ing our way to the top. If we fall, we must get back up and recover the lost time while down so

that we can move on and continue with the journey to the fullest of our ability. We can never

stop trying, stop achieving, stop prospering for as long as we can, so that we continue to grow

and be the best that we can be.

The wise Confucius once said, “Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in getting up

every time we do.” This inspiring quote means that if something bad happens to you, the best

thing that you can do is come back from it by working even harder than you had before. Use

this quote as an inspiration for high school in case you receive a bad grade or don’t make a sports

team to keep trying and work even harder on the next test or tryout. After failing once, it will

push you to try harder the next time and be happy for what you have succeeded in.

My three years here at Oak Valley Middle School have taught me right from wrong when

it comes to friendship, studying, and test taking. But, I’ve also learned from Elie Wiesel that

“the best victory sometimes comes after the worst defeat because it doesn’t matter if you fall, just

as long as you get back up”.

One of the great dichotomies of life is this time of year. The good news: the kids are out of school. The bad news: the kids are out of school. The kids are overjoyed and the parents, well, let’s just say, we reserve the right to withhold our opinion on the matter. The contradiction of views is quite humorous, but in the end, everyone adjusts and the summer routine soon becomes very comfortable.

Since summer is about getting out of school and fun in the sun, we asked a group of Oak Valley Middle School students what summer meant to them. Their responses were fairly predictable and for the most part very similar. Karli Renken, Haley Schmitt, Val King, Kourtney Jacobowski, Nathan Judd, Nathan Dybczak, and Kyle Joyce all agreed that summer is about having fun and hanging out with friends. Karli, Haley and Val link summer to going on a great vacation. Nathan J. likes going to the beach to meet girls while Kourtney and Val are clearly hoping they’ll run into Justin Bieber at the beach. Karli is looking forward to a fun camp, whereas Nathan D, Kyle and Val like the idea of relaxation!

However you look at it, summer is here!

Who says Outdoor Movies are a Thing of the Past!

County of San Diego Parks & Rec will once again host the Movies in the Park at the 4S Ranch Community Park. Movies start at dusk. Shay & Associates and the 4S Ranch HOA are back for more as your co-sponsors for the event. The Little League snack bar will be open for snacks! Don’t forget your blankets and chairs, as it gets pretty cold in the evening!

Below are the dates and movies scheduled. It’s an exciting line up, so get ready for some fun Saturday nights this summer! June 18 - how to Train Your Dragon; July 23 - Despicable me;

4S ranch fire Station Spaghetti Dinner

The 4S Ranch Fire Station (Rancho Santa Fe Station #2) on 16930 Four Gee Rd in 4S Ranch will soon be the scene of a wonderful community event you won’t want to miss.

On Saturday, June 18 from 4 to 7 pm, the fire station will host a fun evening for the entire family. The fire station will have several live demonstra-tions including Auto Fire / Extrication as well as Rescue Repel Rope Systems off of the Training Tower. An antique Fire Engine will also be on display as well as the chance for the community to view the Fire Station.

To top it all off, a spaghetti dinner will be served! The cost is $6 for adults and $4 children. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation as well as Firefighters Cancer Support Network. Tickets can only be purchased the night of the event.

10-Year-old 4S ranch resident Performed at Carnegie hall

Soon after spring break, Andrew Zhao, a 5th grader at Monterey Ridge Elementary, was on board a flight across the country. His destination? The Big Apple, New York City! This wasn’t your ordinary trip to visit landmarks; this was some-thing special. On the flight over, Andrew’s mind was definitely not on the Statue of Liberty or the Empire State Building, it was instead on a music score filled with pencil marks and indications.

Andrew had just won the gold medal from the 2011 International Music Festival by the American Association for the Development of the Gifted and Talented (AADGT). As part of the recognition, he was invited to perform Bartok’s piano piece “Six Romanian Folk Dances” at Carnegie Hall. His performance on April 17 won praise from Elena Rossman, President of AADGT, saying that “all three professors of our jury loved his interpretation of Bartok.”

Andrew started learning piano at the age of 4 and his current teacher is Mrs. Inessa Litvin. He has been quite successful in several piano com-petitions, including second place of the MTAC San Diego piano concerto competition, finalist in San Diego Symphony’s Hot Shot Competition, and the Southern California Bach Festival. In addition to piano playing, he is an active participant in community service and was elected president of the Student Council at Monterey Ridge Elementary in 2010. Andrew also has won first place in the San Diego Chinese Essay contest. In his leisure time, he likes to play computer games on his iPad with his younger sister Dora.

Andrew shared, “I enjoy playing piano. I practice 1-2 hours each day.Whenever I play piano, it seems to me as natural as speaking. This is prob-ably one of the most important parts - you shouldn’t force yourself to do something that you don’t like.”

4S ranch resident - making a Difference in KenyaTwenty-one year old 4S Ranch native and gradu-

ate of Westview High, Liz Martin, never imagined she would dedicate her life to helping the poor and oppressed through mission work. She attended college at San Diego State for a few semesters. However, she knew there was something more. She went to Kenya, Africa for a three-month mission trip and Kenya stole her heart.

Coming back to the United States in May of 2010, Martin’s heart was broken for the poor in Kenya. In October, she and three others from her Kenya trip became part of a team of three men and three women all under the age of 28 who have committed the next two years of their lives toward remedying injustice in Kenya, Africa through a project called the Kenya Initiative.

The Kenya Initiative, which is part of Adventures in Missions, a Gainesville, Georgia, non-profit organi-zationl The organization focuses specifically on the Internally Displaced People (IDP) of Maai Mahiu in Kenya who have been refugees in their own country since the 2007 presidential election. These people lost everything they owned in the violence of the elections, and now live in man-made tents and are lucky to eat one meal a day. Martin and the three others on the team ministered to the IDP every Saturday, and their hearts broke for the situation.

“We have spent time at the camps and have seen the desperate need there,” Martin said. “These people live in conditions that are unacceptable for anyone to have to endure day-to-day. We have stared into the eyes of hungry children and mothers who cannot feed them. After seeing their situ-ation, we were changed forever and compelled to action. The people in the camps have become our friends, and now that we have seen their need, we are responsible to help them.”

This team of six has worked at the AIM offices in Gainesville, Georgia developing a strategy to bring self-sustainability by focusing on five main needs: water, land, community center, business for men, and business for women. They will implement these projects toward rebuilding this com-munity and are moving to Kenya in July and committing to live there for at least a year and a half.

To raise money for this project, Kenya Initiative is hosting an event called 5K for Kenya. They will road trip around the United States and host a 5K race in each of their hometowns. They are hosting Martin’s hometown race in San Diego on June 4 at 4S Ranch Community Park. Registration

Youth Roller Hockey Saturdays are hosted by volunteer coaches who have a passion for teaching young athletes the sport of roller hockey. Catering to both total beginners and the very advanced, the hockey program focuses on the importance of skating and puck handling. They encourage all young skaters to join various leagues throughout the County of San Diego to progress their skills further.

They encourage players to move teams to help balance out lop-sided teams to make the game fair and fun. The league consists of 10 weeks with playoffs and championships to conclude the season. MRES Awarded CA Business for Education Excellence Award

Monterey Ridge was once again awarded the prestigious California Business for Education Excellence (CBEE) Honor Roll Award. The Kindergarten Tree

The Premiere Party of “The Kindergarten Tree”, a film made by Mrs. Power’s Kindergarten class, was a huge success! Mrs. Power’s Kindergarten class arrived in true Hollywood style…..a stretch limo! After walk-ing the red carpet, the class then described how they made the movie with effects such as the chroma key and stop motion technology. Cinco De Mayo

The Cinco De Mayo Celebration was a huge suc-cess! Despite budget cuts eliminating the SRES tradi-tional open house (this was cut at all schools in the dis-trict), parents at SRES were still invited on campus to view and enjoy their student’s accomplishments in the fine arts.

This was a night for families to come together and enjoy the great sense of community we have here at 4S Ranch. This event was not a fundraiser, but a free event sponsored by the SRES PTA. Art work from every student at SRES was displayed. Volunteers sifted through every students work, picking their best piece to be displayed. The volunteers cut paper to mat the work, covered walls and boards with paper, and hung every piece of work for an amazing, professional looking display.

The Cinco de Mayo theme was chosen not only because the event was held on May 5, but also as an expression of our culturally diverse community The family dance was a hit! The brightly colored decorations shouted ‘Viva El Arte!’. The students danced to a live DJ playing clean tunes that were enjoyed by all ages.

Other favorites from the dance were the piñatas – one for each grade level dumped out candy. The family photo booth was decorated with a Mexican theme. Families gave their email address, and the pictures were emailed to them for free. Thank you so much to the PTA for this wonder-ful school event – what a great way to showcase the wonderful work our students do with the support of PTA’s Art Corp program!

Stone Ranch Young Writers Camp

Sharpen up your pencils and join us for two weeks of rocking, writing and sharing stories. The Stone Ranch Camp begins July 11- 22 from 8:30 - 11:30 am and is for students entering 2nd – 6th grades. The Oak Valley Camp begins June 20 – July 1 from 8:30 – 11:30 am for students entering 6th – 10th grades. This year we also have two one-week camps designed for High School Students entering 9th through 12th grades. The first one is July 25 – 29 and the second one is August 1 – 5 from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm. Del Norte Track & Field Teams Full Of Potential

Casino Night Raises More than $10,000

Oak Valley Middle School Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to raising additional funds for Oak Valley Middle School, raised more than $10,000 recently during its first annual “Casino Night” fundraiser. More than 100 attended the April event at the Del Sur Ranch House. The Ranch House was transformed into a Casino, featur-ing gaming, entertainment, dancing, and a silent auction. Proceeds from Casino Night will go toward technology upgrades and other support for Oak Valley Middle School.

Special thanks go out to the Board of Directors: Kirsten Black-President, Nancy Kane, Kris Meyers, Mylissa Niznik, Kelly Munro, Jane Mcguire, Karen Peterson, Sharon Seikkula, and Sue Otto.

The Foundation is already planning their next fundraiser -- Oktoberfest on October 1. They will also host the second annual “Holiday Boutique”, which was a big hit last year. Teen Writers’ Camp

The San Marcos Writing Project, in partnership with the Poway Unified School District, is sponsoring a two-week writers’ camp for students entering grades 6 – 10. The camp, which will be held here at Oak Valley, will run from June 20 through July 1. ESS Summer Pilot Program

This ESS program is open to Oak Valley students entering 7th or 8th grade and will run from July 1- 29 on Oak Valley’s campus. Enrollment will be limited to 75 students and is on a first come basis. Visit the OVMS web-site for a sample daily schedule. There are two options regarding the hours:

1. Regular – 9 am – 4 pm2. Extended – 6:30 am – 6 pmFees will be $700 for the regular hours and $800 for the extended day.

The Nighthawk Track & Field Teams have shown great promise this season. The boys won their first dual meet April 28 at Canyon Crest, while the fresh-men girls took first place at the Dick Wilkins Frosh-Soph Invitational meet April 30 at El Capitan High School. mores compared to teams that have full classes of juniors and seniors is sometimes a bit too much,” said a supportive Coach Ruff. “We lost a nail biter to Orange Glen (3 Points). Our boys team is very talented at the freshman level and will compete very well over the next few years.”

people in your neighborhood

Chuck and Julie Dilts live a lifestyle that is a little removed from what we are all used to in our little subur-ban neighborhoods. Some of you may already know them, but the reason we are featuring them here is because they are wonderfully giving people and they are able to provide services that might be of use to some of the families in our community. And, well, Chuck is the preeminent Daddy, which fits in nicely with Father’s Day this month.

Chuck is originally from Cuba, Illinois and Julie from Tulsa, Oklahoma. When Chuck was young, he worked on a pig farm and helped with the church youth there in Cuba. He was invited to come out to California to work as a youth leader at the then brand new Green Valley Church, where he remained as the youth leader for many years and is currently still very involved. Julie, also very involved with the church, moved to San Diego as a child and was one of the original students to open Rancho Bernardo High School. Julie became an Emergency Technician and helped with her family’s business.

Chuck and Julie met at Green Valley Church. They were married 10 years ago on the property they now call home: Buckheart Ranch (www.buckheart.org). Chuck and Julie have 4 children, Charlie 8, Jasper 6, Ruby 4, Joseph 2, and a new baby due this month.

Even after a hard day working Chuck still finds the energy to play with the children or read them a story. He often shares fun stories with them about his childhood memories. He faithfully corrects, disciplines, and

encourages the kids to do what is right. Chuck enjoys tak-ing the children on “Daddy Days.” Every once in a while, each of the children individually get a chance to go with daddy for a whole day!

Charlie and Jasper enjoy being on baseball teams and playing catch with dad. They ride their bikes around the ranch and have fun jumping on the trampoline. It’s always a highlight to visit Grandparents - they love spending time with them swimming, playing games, or gardening. Ruby loves babies, dolls, and pretending. She seems to always have a song on her heart and a little dance in her steps. Life on the ranch is about pitching in, so each child

has their chores to do each day. They help around the house and take care of the chickens and their pet dog Daisy.

Buckheart Ranch serves as home for not only the Dilts family, but also for many wayward boys who have lost their way. Chuck and Julie along with a string of other volunteers help get these boys back on track by teaching them life skills, academics, and how to work hard. The Food Bank selected Buckheart Ranch as a distribution center, so every Friday they load up a truck with food staples; milk, eggs, bread, etc. Everything is placed out on tables and 30-60 families show up, grab a box and shop for free. It is fair to expect that some academic regression can occur over the sum-mer when our children are not attending school, but it is preventable.

Fortunately for parents, there are many fun-filled ways to engage children in the learning process without needing a teaching credential! For children in primary grades, try the following suggestions:

• “Painting” letters and words on the sidewalk with ice or water and a paintbrush.

• “Tracing” letters, words or numbers in shaving cream (this is particu-larly fun in the tub or on shower walls).

• Use wet spaghetti noodles to make letters and words.

• “Write” letters, words, numbers or simple math calculation problems in the dirt or sandbox.

• Count and sort items such as coins, buttons, beads, and cereals--use these items to describe differences and similarities, and teach pattern-ing.

• Label items/objects in your home with index cards to teach vocabulary words, including antonyms and synonyms.

• Play board games designed to enrich language skills such as Apples to Apples or Zingo.

• Plant seeds, flowers, herbs, etc. to reinforce following and executing multi-step directions.

• Teach your child to cook using a simple recipe, preferably one with pic-torial directions, to reinforce following multi-step directions and intro-duce measurement concepts.

• Download audio books or borrow them from the local library and have your child listen to the story while following along with the print.

• Download math flashcard & phonics applications to your phone for time sitting in the car or waiting in a line, store, office, etc.

• Access free educational websites for math and reading skills such as Starfall.com.

• Access free keyboarding websites to encourage typing such as Dancemat Typing or Animated Beginning Typing.

• Play board games that require problem solving skills such as Clue Junior, Monopoly Junior, Connect Four, Uno or Memory.

• Visit the 4S Ranch Library.

Preventing Summer RegressionIdeas for upper elementary and middle school-aged children include:

• Introduce more elaborate recipes in which the child must plan a grocery list, shop for ingredients, prepare the food, and measure using fractions.

• Determine a weekly summer allowance and help your child decide what percentage to save and spend. Have your child open a savings account and keep record of funds.

• Ask your child to help plan and organize a garage sale, vacation, family bike ride, or neighborhood carwash.

• Have your child keep a daily summer journal; also, have your child write a summary of special summer activities, vacations or visiting guests.

• Help your child estimate and calculate the mileage and gas needed for a road trip.

• Have your child find the lyrics to her favorite song then write her own added verse(s).

• Create a summer video montage and write a script for it.

• Add a chapter(s) or different ending to a favorite book and send it to the publisher.

• Write a story from the perspective of the family pet.

• Download applications and audio books to personal phones or other elec-tronic devices to reinforce math reasoning and calculation skills

• Enroll your child in musical instrument lessons.

• Access free educational and keyboarding websites.

• Visit the museums in Balboa Park and write a summary describing each type of museum there.

• Visit the 4S Ranch Library.

Parents may also choose to employ a tutor to maintain or improve aca-demic skill level. A good tutor should possess the necessary education, experi-ence, and teaching strategies to help improve a student’s performance in any or all core subject areas (reading, math, writing). Given that the summer is roughly 8 weeks, parents should set realistic goals with a professional tutor and efforts should yield measurable changes in the child’s academic performance. Tutoring sessions should be fun, engaging, varied, and tailored to meet the individualized needs of each student. It never ceases to amaze me how much kids love gardening. The tasks of gardening seem so simple and pedestrian, but yet, perfect for kids.

Watering, weeding, digging and watching are all tasks that are easy to teach and hand off. It’s one place where mistakes are easy to correct or to clean up.

Pots or In-Ground? We have a small backyard with limited open soil, so our garden is in pots. Planting in the ground is preferable since pots are subject to weather extremes and because the pot is essentially an island, it has no way of getting any nutrients except for those that come from rain or the potting soil. Remember to apply vegetable fertilizer regularly. Be sure to choose one that is specifically for vegetables since others may be toxic.

What to Grow? I first found a chart that shows what month to grow what vegetable or fruit. Don’t be confused with harvest lists as those show when fruit and vegetables are har-vested as opposed to planted. There are several on-line, such as: http://www.digitalseed.com/gardener/schedule/vegetable.html. I let my 8-year-old son choose what he wanted to grow based on the month. This was a good exercise in reading a chart and started the excite-ment for the process. In April, there weren’t many seedlings available, but there were a ton of seed packets. The kids loved examining each one with the

Adventures in Gardening with Kidsbotanical illustrations on the covers. After some parent-child negotiation, we choose some seedlings and some seeds. We brought them home along with our pots, potting soil, and hand shovels. In less than an hour, we had our vegetable garden planted.

Seeds or Starters? I found that it was beneficial to grow some vegetables from seed and others from starters (small plants). Planting a seed is simple enough, but bare soil in the early stages of seed growth is not very exciting for the younger crowd. The kids water and wait – sometimes a few days to a week for that first leaf to sprout up. Though their enthusiasm may wane, the day the first leaf bursts though the soil to spout, watch out, because your kids will be doing a happy dance. (I joined in.) My kids were talking to the sprouts like they were new puppies.

Adventures in Sunflowers: The most exciting plant we selected was the “Mammoth” sunflower seeds (Girasol gigante ‘Mammoth’). The package boasts that the sunflower plant could reach 12 feet tall with large flowers packed with edible seeds. When my kids heard this description you would have thought the circus was coming to town. “How are we going to reach the flowers if they are 12 feet tall? Will we need a ladder? Can we climb the beanstalk?” This is when we had to have the serious talk of gardening real-ity. We had to talk about the all the things that could go wrong with these sunflowers – lack of water, too much sun, they would be planted in a pot and likely wouldn’t grow to full height, a bird could eat the sprouts, etc. As grim a picture that I painted, the kids were determined to give it their all to get a tall sunflower. Sure enough, within a few weeks, we had 18” tall sun-flower plants. Unfortunately, they have since stopped growing and we don’t know why. We have had many discussions about the sunflowers and what to do with them. I will take these dinner discussions any day. Speculation, hypothesis, trial and error are all things that the kids have learned from the $1.79 seed packet.

Although the sunflowers have not been fully successful, we have had some victories. We planted Arugula, which forms seedlings in less than a week. Just when my kids were losing their patience with looking at bare soil, the arugula sprouts popped up and offered some salad greens soon after. I love to ask the kids to go pick out some arugula for our salad at dinner. Similarly, we have had success with carrots, strawberries, cucumbers, lettuce and blueberries. Although we have had equally as many failures in the gar-den with lost plants and seeds that never sprouted, it has been an adventure for our whole family. Every day offers a new glimpse at what has changed and what has stayed the same. Who knows, maybe tomorrow we will have 12-foot tall sunflowers.

Kara Pearlman came into this world running. She was exercising to Jane Fonda workouts in high school and was the physics and anatomy teachers’ favorite student because she just could not get enough of learning about how the body works! Kara has been in sports and dance her entire life. She earned her degree in Exercise Science and did everything from managing corporate fitness programs and large fitness clubs in Chicago to being a Reebok Master Trainer. Along with a partner, she even wrote a book entitled “The Complete Guide To Adventure Racing”. Back in the 90’s, extreme sports were globally popular and this book was all about extreme racing through the wilderness via every mode of movement you can imag-ine – hiking, biking, horseback riding, kayaking, climbing – multi-sporting!

Kara and her husband Jay had been living in Chicago, but they are both outdoorsy, active people and the Windy City kind of cramped their style. So they took that infamous leap of faith and followed some very good friends out to San Diego. A friend told her about this “Pure Barre” class and never having been one to pass up a new exercise opportunity, Kara tried it. She participated in her first class in September of 2009 and was teaching her first class by November. She was completely and totally hooked.

After scouting numerous locations, Kara found the perfect one here in 4S Ranch. Pure Barre is a total body workout using a ballet bar as the basis for most of the exercises. A small ball and light weights are also used.

The workout uses small isometric movements, which exercise and sculpt the body. These exercises strengthen your core and shape your body. The upbeat music keeps you energized and the best part – most people see results in as little as 10 classes! There are many classes scheduled throughout the day and they last 55 minutes.

Summer Selling Season

Here in 4S Ranch, the summer is our prime home selling season as families look to move in for the school year. To get the highest possible price, follow these time-tested steps:

1. Look at your home from the street. What is the first thing buyers will notice? Replace brown grass and faded bark. Add colorful plants to borders to create a brighter look.

2. Do the same when you walk in your front door. You want the house to grab a buyer and this is their first impression. Make sure the paint looks good and everything is clean.

3. De-clutter. For two reasons: It makes your home appear larger and it lets buyers pay more attention to your home than your “stuff”. The buyers are interested in your home, not your National Geographic collection.
