JANUARY IS NATIONAL MENTORING MONTH! With over 100 matches of Bigs and Littles, as well as dozens more soon to be matched, now is a great time to show the formal and informal mentors in your life how much of an impact they have had. Taking the time to let someone know the genuine difference they’ve made can be a powerful moment to share your happiness. January is National Mentoring Month with several important dates to mark on the calendar. “I am a Mentor Day” takes place on January 14th, and “Thank Your Mentor Day” takes place on January 21st. Both dates are a great opportunity to share your success stories with friends, family, and the mentors who have positively affected your life. There are many different ways to get involved either online or through conversation.(whomentoredyou.org, NationalMentoringMonth.org, Mentoring.org, BBBSMV.org). January 17th is “International Mentoring Day” celebrating worldwide mentorship on Muhammad Ali’s birthday. Muhammad Ali is a world-renowned icon not only for his athletic prowess, but his steadfast belief in doing what is right, no matter the consequence. Ali’s defining achievement is difficult to pin down in a lifetime of exemplary statesmanship. Muhammad Ali exemplifies the best in the human spirit with his leadership and core principles on life. Muhammad Ali’s six

core principles are; Confidence - Belief in oneself, one’s abilities, and one’s future. Conviction - A firm belief that gives one the courage to stand behind that belief, despite pressure to do otherwise. Dedication - The act of devoting all of one’s energy, effort, and abilities to a certain task. Giving - To present voluntarily without expecting something in return. Respect - Esteem for, or a sense of the worth or excellence of, oneself and others. Spirituality - A sense of awe, reverence, and

inner peace inspired by a connection to all of creation and/or that which is greater than oneself. These principles are an excellent jump off point to start a conversation on what it means to be a mentor right here in the Quad Cities. Stay tuned to our online newsfeed

The National Mentoring Month Campaign will also be providing lots of information on their Twitter (https://twitter.com/mentornational) and Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/MENTORnational/) accounts. Our local Facebook and Twitter accounts will showcase the real world impact made in the Quad Cities by all of our caring volunteers. The daily results of the hard work and dedication of all the Bigs within Big Brothers Big Sisters will be celebrated and praised. “We talk a lot about any problems she or her loved ones have, often with me just listening. As a Big or Mentor,

as I am often called, I have many chances to show Tejana the outside world by taking her to public events. We have attended professional sporting competitions of wide varieties due to my work sponsoring the tickets. Sometimes, we participate in activities with the Big Brothers Big Sisters or my Rotary club such as science night or helping paint homes for those who need help through groups that sponsor the costs. Sometimes we do things like watch a movie together at my house or just paint each other’s nails. We decide our activities together and try to plan ahead as much as we can. By far, this young lady has given me much more than I can give in return. It is my sincere belief that we both look forward to, in the words of her Mom, "Tejana's Cecilia time." I am in this for life and will be there no matter what because Tejana is so very worth the time spent”!

Ayden is a 4th grade Little who is a die-hard sports lover with a fun, competitive nature. This football season, Ayden and his team had an impressive 5-0-2 record (5 wins, 0 losses, and 2 ties) and won first place in their division. Ayden has been matched with Big Brother, Eric Spreit, since March 2015. Eric is proud to be matched with Ayden and they make a great team. Way to go, Ayden! We look forward to seeing many more successes in your future.

Catrina is a third grade Little who is active, loves horses and enjoys spending time with her Big Sister, Brittney Noel. Catrina and Brittney have been matched since October 2015. Catrina loves horses but had never been able to ride. Brittney decided to take Catrina riding so they could spend quality time getting to know one another. From Catrina’s smile she was definitely pleased to have this experience. Thank you Brittney!

Penguin Supplies needed: ● Orange, black, white craft form or construction paper ● Glue ● Pencil and scissors ● Scrapbook Paper ● Crayons ● Googly eyes or make your own Directions: Cut out an oval for the penguin’s body and wings with black craft form or construction paper. Cut white foam or construction paper to make the penguin’s belly. Take a sheet of orange foam or paper and trace the child’s hand prints. Afterwards, cut the handprints out making sure the bottoms of the handprints are rounded. Glue the handprints to the white belly for the penguin’s feet. Add a colorful scarf with scrapbook paper or use leftover white paper and let your Little decorate their own. Lastly, add some googly eyes or draw your own. Be sure to add a beak, and you have your very own keepsake Penguin.

JANUARY CRAFT ACTIVITIES: PENGUINS & MASON JAR BANKS

Mason Jar Banks Supplies :

Mason Jar

Slotted Lid at Craft Store or use tinsnips on lid

Spray paint

Pens and/or pencils

White poster board (for Minnie and Mikey Mouse)

Red and black marker (for Minnie) black marker (for Mikey Mouse)

Duct Tape (Proper color for Super Hero Jar you are making)

X-ACTO knife and cutting mat or scissors

Rubbing alcohol and a few cotton swabs

Directions: For Super Heroes Bank: Spray paint the jars, caps and jar rings in a well-ventilated area. While it is drying, sketch your emblem of choice on duct tape with a pen or you can also print off images. Cut out the shapes with an X-ACTO Knife or scissors. You can layer duct tape to create the Superman emblem (cut out the red shape first and then place it on top of the yellow tape). When the jar is dry, center the emblems in the top third of the jar. For Mickey or Minnie Mouse Bank: Follow the steps above then cut out two circles from the white poster board with a small triangle cut to the height of the lids sides to the middle (it should look like a pie with one piece missing on both circles for the mouse ears). Use a black marker to color the ears and glue it behind the slit on jar lid. For Minnie Mouse’s bow trace dots on the white poster board. Use a red marker making to fill in the space around the dots. Glue on the bow then the ears. For Mickey, cut two circles from white poster board and cut out for his two buttons. For Minnie cut several dots out of white poster board and glue them on to her dress.

Dear Volunteer, Sometimes it feels like there are not enough hours in the day for everything that needs to get done. We understand that the 6-10 hours each month we ask Community-Based volunteers to spend with their Little is a significant time commitment. However, we ask that matches do their best to meet this requirement because the frequency of contact between mentor and mentee has been linked to positive youth outcomes. Additionally, matches that are not consistent can actually have a negative effect on youth. Here are a few strategies to help make meeting with your Little a bit easier to fit into your schedule. Embrace the everyday moments. Sometimes the best mentoring moments

happen during the things that may not seem very exciting, but really help build a strong relationship. Take an inventory of all the things you need to do during the week and see if there is something that you can include your Little in. Making dinner, going to the gym, fixing things around the house and shopping all provide a lot of natural mentoring moments. Visit your Little during lunch. Instead of spending your lunch time in the office break room, take a quick trip to your Little’s school. They love seeing you, and your Match Coach would be happy to give you all the information you need to visit. Bring your little to work. Many workplaces participate in a “Bring Your Child to Work” program. Check with your employer to

see if your Little can visit you at work and learn about your job. Consider having a set time that you and

your Little meet every week. This way you both know to keep that time free. Feel free to contact your Match Coach with any additional questions. We are here to help! HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM MACOMB! As 2015 comes to a close, we want to reflect on the incredible year we had in Warren and McDonough Counties. So many matches, so many great people working together, so many generous supporters, SO MUCH ENTHUSIASM! It truly has been a banner year, and everyone involved, on every level, should be very proud of themselves. Allow me to editorialize, just a bit: I want to offer my heartfelt thanks to everyone on my BBBS team; we are changing lives for the better, forever, together. No work I ever did in the past was as fulfilling and rewarding as what I do now. I love going home at the end of the day knowing that I helped children, and I want all of you to feel the same. On to the news: NEW MATCHES WE MADE 2 NEW MATCHES!!! What a wonderful way to wrap up the year; bringing together great people is the best part of the job. These 2 new matches will be the last of 2015, and BBBS is proud to finish on such positive notes. Little Sister Morgan told her mother, “I want a Big Sister.” Then she marched into the office and told BBBS, “I want a Big Sister.” No uncertainty there. The good news for Morgan? Big Sister Allison was waiting. I dare you to find 2 young ladies with better attitudes and bigger smiles. Can’t do it.

Little Sister Nola, on the other hand, was a little anxious about getting started. Big Sister Lindy is the nicest person in the world, and it didn’t take long for Nola’s doubts to evaporate; the day after the intro Nola told her mom that she couldn’t wait for the first match meeting. Sometimes our volunteers take small steps, but steps forward nonetheless. Our volunteers are such wonderful people! SAYING GOODBYE We have had a number of incredible interns at our office over the years, from different departments at WIU and different walks of life. For fall 2015 we had a senior from the LEJA department, Jarvis Hernandez. Every one of our interns has made a huge and lasting impact on our program, and Jarvis is just the most recent in the long string of mature and dedicated young people we have had the pleasure of working with. Jarvis went far above and beyond the requirements of his internship, and we need to recognize his love for children and for the BBBS program. We wish Jarvis only the best in the future, but we know he doesn’t need wishes; Jarvis is a good person with a good heart, and he can change the world. Many thanks, Jarvis.

CHRISTMAS PARTY 2015 Our Christmas party was on Sunday, December 6th, and we had a spectacular time! Balloons, face painting, fresh cookies, Santa, a real band (of WIU students), and gifts for every child. It could not have been any better! The WIU Women’s Rugby team volunteered to do all of the work, and we very much appreciate their support of the BBBS program. As she did in 2014, Board member, Lauren Suprenant dazzled with her balloon-twisting skills. Western Brass, an outstanding student group led by Dr. Randall Faust, serenaded us with beautiful Christmas music. AND we made exactly 125 “anonymous” Christmas cards for the nice people at Wesley Village. BBBS is very proud of everyone who participated in our annual gift to the Macomb community! Many thanks to Housing Authority of McDonough County for donating the space, as they always do.
