With the end of the school year quickly approaching, and summer vacations for both Littles and Bigs being planned, we often begin to hear questions about how Bigs and Littles can stay in touch and maintain communication over the summer. Managing changing schedules can be a bit difficult, but below are some ideas for how to ensure that you and your Little are able to keep up with the relationship development that you’ve begun.

COMMUNITY-BASED MATCHES:

Share your vacation plans with your Little and their parent/guardian as soon as you know them, and ask what their family plans might be for the summer. Start making plans now to adjust for weeks that either of you might be out of town.

Be sure to confirm your Little’s and their parent/guardian’s contact information now, so that if something comes up over the summer, you know how to reach them to adjust.

Pay close attention to Coaches Corner in May and June. Over the summer months, BBBS plans match activities very regularly (almost one per week!).

SCHOOL-BASED PLUS MATCHES:

While you are limited to only participating in BBBS sponsored match activities (meaning BBBS staff are present), we want you to see your Little at least once per month over the summer.

Talk to your Little’s parent/guardian about their summer schedule and start planning ahead for when those monthly face-to-face BBBS match activities can occur.

If you aren’t able to attend a BBBS match activity with our staff, stay in touch by phone calls, letters, postcards (especially great if you go on vacation!) or email. Verify with your Little’s parent/guardian what

they are comfortable with in terms of individual communication with your Little over the summer.

SCHOOL-BASED MATCHES:

If you are still in an older School-based match, consider transitioning to either the Community-based or School-based Plus programs. This will allow you and your Little to easily have interaction and communication over the summer months.

If you continue as a School-based match, talk to your Match Coach/Program Specialist about how you might contact your Little or their fam-ily over the summer. Sending letters, postcards, and phone calls are all great options as long as the parent/

guardian is comfortable with these.

We know summer will be a fun, busy, flash of time, with many opportunities to share new experiences with your Little, either in person or through other communication. Planning ahead and remembering BBBS guidelines for our various programs will help make for a successful, consistent summer with you and your Little. When in doubt, talk to your Match Coach/Program Specialist for ideas and to communicate with parents/guardians, if necessary.

BBBS PRESENTED 2016 BBB TORCH AWARD

Congratulations to Joe Moralez, of Bettendorf, for receiving a 2016 Excellence in Mentoring Award, in a ceremony at the state capitol building on April 13. Joe is one of only 4 individuals across the state of Iowa to be chosen for this prestigious award. Joe’s wife, Robin, son Nico, and League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) representatives Mike Reyes and Tarsicio Macias were able to attend and support Joe’s achievement. Big Brothers Big Sisters appreciates the time Joe has spent with his Little, Rodolfo (age 15) over the past four years, and look forward to seeing how their relationship grows as Rodolfo continues through high school and beyond. Way to go Joe and Rodolfo!

MAY MATCH ACTIVITY: TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALL GAME!

MAY CRAFT ACTIVITY: SUNDAE BATH SALTS AND POEM PURSE Supplies Needed: Bath Salts Recipe: Ice Cream Sundae Cup 2/3 c. Epsom salt White Loofah 1/4 c. baking soda Anything red for a cherry 1 Drop of red food coloring Straw 1/4 tsp of cherry or any scented oils Long Handle Spoon Hole Puncher and Paper for poem or message Bath Salts or to create your own see the recipe to the right. Instructions: Put store bought or homemade bath salts in a clear food baggie. Put the baggie in the bottom of the cup. Add your long handled spoon and the straw. Next, write or print the message below and tie it to your straw. Add the loofah on top and add something red for the cherry on top.

Print Out or Write it—Poem Below: This is a special sundae, That will leave you feeling great. It's chock full of good things, Even though it can't be ate. Take it in the bath with you. Of course don't take a sip, Cause it may look delicious, But it's made to take a dip. Happy Mother’s Day!

Supplies Needed: 12 Buttons Glue 1 Yellow, 1 White, and 2 Pink pieces of paper Scissors Markers Ribbon for bow Instructions: Using the pink paper you will make the handle, purse flap and purse bottom 1. Cut the pink paper into a U shape to make the handle 2. Cut the purse flap by first cutting a triangle and snipping off one of the small points 3. Cut out two purse bottoms so they look like the picture (above right). Use your yellow paper to make the purse buckle. 4. Cut out a square, and cut out the inside of the square, so, it looks like a buckle. Once everything is cut, glue the papers together as shown. The second purse bottom will be glued to the back of the purse to make a place to store the coupons. 5. Only place glue on the 2nd purse bottom’s sides and bottom. Be sure not to glue across the top so you can form an open pouch 6. Glue the second pink paper as described in step 5 7. Glue the buckle onto the purse flap 8. Glue the ribbon or bow to the purse’s handle 9. Glue a button in the middle of the buckle, and glue the rest of the buttons along the bottom of the purse 10. To finish, write Happy Mother’s Day on the pink paper of the purse!

DEAR MATCH COACH: RESPONDING TO FEAR OF VIOLENCE By: Tania Duex Let’s face it, talking to kids about terrorism and public violence is tough and something we usually try to avoid. However, there are times that a child may bring something up to you and you might be called upon to respond. Recently, I was talking to a 9 year old about a vacation she was going to be taking with her family. I asked her if she was excited and she said no. She was afraid she might die because they would be flying. After my initial surprise, I asked her why she thought she would die from flying. She referred to the situation in Brussels that she saw on TV and said people are dying on airplanes a lot. Sadly, whether we are aware of it or not, our kids are taking notice and may be harboring fears that we as adults aren’t even aware of. As an adult I felt like I needed to take action so that I could offer some reassurance from her fears. First, I let her

lead the conversation and I reassured her that I understood her feelings of being afraid. Next, I talked to her about the fact that things often make news because they are rare. However, as adults we should be aware that children see scenes being replayed and may believe that these events are continuing to happen. Third, I kept it simple and said that sometimes people do bad things but that doesn’t make everyone bad. Finally, we made a list of people in our lives that do good things and help the community. This list could include Bigs, firefighters, teachers, policeman, parents, or whoever the child may feel safe with. SOUTHERN MENTORING CENTER: SPRING IS HERE! Hello from sunny Macomb! The weather is beautiful [today], and summer is right around the corner. The school year is coming to a close, and summer fun awaits us all! Before we all go outside to play, let’s see what the Southern Mentoring Center has been up to. NEW MATCH!!! As we draw nearer to the end of the school year, new matches come along less often, but those new matches are no less wonderful. We made one new match in leading up to this edition of Coaches Corner, and it’s a really good one! Little Sister Allie is just a great kid, period. She also happens to be our first-ever home-schooled kid! Big Sister Whitney is a local, like a "right-across-the-street-from-Lincoln-School" local. She came in full of good mentoring energy to share. Funny coincidence, Allie's father already knew Whitney before the intro. (Small town we live in.) Bring them together and a wonderful relationship is born. A great match off to a great start!

BBBS MATCH ACTIVITY On 29 March we had a BBBS-wide match activity: WIU Baseball vs. Illinois-Springfield. Unfortunately, Western didn’t win, but we had a great time. Best of all, Little Brother Dion was there to see his Big Brother (Roman) play centerfield for the Leathernecks. (And we had a lot of fun spitting sunflower seeds all over the place.) You’ll get ‘em next time, ‘Necks!

BIGS IN THE COMMUNITY Macomb Police Department Honor Guard presented the colors at Busch Stadium during the first weekend series of Cardinals baseball! The Cardinals played the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday, April 16th. Have a look at the photo…do you recognize anyone? Yep, 3 Big Brothers in there:

LOADS OF FUN AT RecruitONE KICK-OFF More than 50 Bigs attended the Recruit ONE (Bigs recruiting Bigs) kick-off event at The Establishment in Rock Island. Attendees learned about the importance of volunteer recruitment and how they can participate in recruiting at least one new Big Brother or Big Sister a year. 4th Avenue crossing the Centennial Bridge and ends at Veterans Memorial

Fejervary Family Fun Day- May 21 at 12:00-5:00 at Fejervary Park at 1800

W. 12th Street in Davenport. There will be a petting Zoo, a Bounce House,
