About Appli Appli is a fast-growing startup building an AI platform that tells students their percentage chances of getting into UK universities based on their profiles. We use massive datasets of previously successful and unsuccessful applicants in order to derive the percentage chances of new candidates and tell them what they can do to most effectively improve those chances. With our help students can make more strategic applications and avoid wasting time and effort in improving their profiles. Our product is available on a paid or partnership basis. Both students and schools can purchase Appli reports independently and we are also building relationships with a range of strategic partners to provide them free of charge to currently disadvantaged applicants in order to widen access to top universities. We’ve had excellent results and validation from our customers in our first market of UK medical school applications and have now built the same AI technology for 85% of subjects at the UK’s top 30 universities. Successful interns will join us during an exciting period as we use our recent funding round to grow with aggressive speed and build both our social impact and market share.

Skills We’re moving at breakneck pace now so the main requirement for any intern is to be excited by the prospect of flexible and rapidly evolving projects! We will work to shape your individual project through discussing your interests and the company’s requirements during your interview. Sample projects could range from working on the front-end development of Appli’s new browser-based platform to managing several strategic partnerships with organisation committed to widening participation at top universities but we’re very open to value that interns could bring in other areas! Applicants are advised to focus on their key skills and areas of interest in their application and interview and are welcome to suggest potential areas in which they could add value. The most important factor is that you are excited by the prospect of taking ownership of your own project. We will work with you to establish key performance indicators to make sure that you can see how your work fits in with the overall direction of the company, but you will be given a large amount of latitude to decide exactly how to achieve these goals! Interns with a particular interest would also be welcome to contribute to the overall strategic direction of the company, through both informal and formal meetings with the founding team, and other stakeholders including investors. Work timing will be flexible. We’re results driven and hate presenteeism: we focus solely on key results and quality of output rather than counting hours!

Professional development Interns working at Appli will enjoy all the benefits of excitement of working at a rapidly growing startup while being able to shape their development to their particular interests. For the entrepreneurially minded this will be an excellent opportunity to see first-hand how a business can iterate rapidly, testing product and business hypotheses and using these to drive growth. For those with an interest in the underlying technology they’ll be able to contribute to the development of novel tech that has the potential to revolutionise the way in which applicants apply to university. Regardless of their particular interest all interns will contribute to strategic decisions, carry out original market research, develop relationships with strategic partners and develop their knowledge of startup legal issues and accounting. For those with a particular interest in startups we’ll make introductions to others in the startup ecosystem (and will be recruiting more full-time employees in Q2 2020!). For those looking to avoid the city after graduation we may be a good fit, but will also happily make introductions to other companies who are hiring! Broadly – each intern will be able to shape their development based on their area of interest, but will also have a great time at an innovative company aiming to truly democratise access to university!

Start-up name Oxford Cancer Analytics

Location Hythe Bridge Street, Oxford and Park End Street, Oxford

Hours Full time

Placement Duration 3 months (commencing April 2020)

About Oxford Cancer Analytics Oxford Cancer Analytics is an award-winning start-up company focusing on early cancer detection to enable curative treatments. We have developed, DECancer.AI, a deep machine learning platform for early cancer detection and personalized treatment determination. Cancer killed 9.6 million people worldwide in 2018. The deadliest cancers are often diagnosed at the final, incurable stage, because current diagnostics are invasive, expensive, and cannot reliably detect the deadliest cancers early. Cancers are curable when detected early. DECancer.AI provides the solution for early cancer detection using liquid biopsy, a blood test that can sensitively detect cancer materials shed into the blood in a minimally invasive and cost-effective manner. DECancer.AI uses advanced AI technology to analyse multidimensional liquid biopsy data (DNA, protein, epigenetics), and selects succinct panels of clinical biomarkers for early detection of specific cancer subtypes. Thus, we aim to enable early cancer detection and guide personalized selection of the most suitable curative treatment.

About MO Intelligence MO Intelligence is an artificial intelligence startup consists of a group of top-tier research scientists, developing advanced machine learning and robotics technologies for construction industry. We empower machines with perception abilities to sense the real world and create digital twins with full of semantics. Construction, as one of the largest sectors of the world economy, suffers from low productivity, labour shortage and onerous management. An estimated 20% of the schedule delay is caused by data vulnerability, around 30% of the work performed by construction companies is actually rework, and the cost reaches 5% of the whole budget. The issue is caused by the fact that most of the construction projects still rely on humans with primitive tools and technologies to record and evaluate construction process periodically .

The current focus of MO Intelligence is on autonomous mobile surveying, which grants the abilities of monitoring the whole construction progress with automatic specifications while eliminating human errors from the traditional workflow. We provide intelligent and efficient surveying solutions based on our advanced robotics technologies to create digital twins for constructions, which bridges the gap between the offline construction sites and online management service. The intelligent automation workflow brought by MO Intelligence not only digitalises the construction work with minimum human labour, but also enables delicacy management over the whole construction process. Placement title Internship

Start-up name myo

Location Hythe Bridge Street, Oxford and Park End Street, Oxford

Hours Full time

Placement Duration 3 months (flexible, otherwise commencing April 2020)

About myo Think about care homes: what is happening on each day? Most people have no idea – we hope that our grandmothers are being well cared for but aren’t really sure. We decided to get an inside look. Spending four months working as caregivers, we experienced first-hand how much effort and love the carers, nurses, and other staff members put into bringing joy and comfort into the lives of their residents. Good news, right? Well, yes – the trouble is, no-one knows about it! As a result, myo was born. We open a window into the lives of people living in care homes, providing a technological solution to increase transparency and contact for relatives and friends. Imagine getting a notification: “Grandma Betty had a great time at the museum today!” You open the myo app and see a photo of your granny peering at the exhibits, having a coffee in the cafe, and buying a toy dinosaur that you suspect is going to be part of your next Christmas present.

You send back a comment: “Looks like fun! 💖” Founded in 2017, myo is one of the first start-ups in Germany to bring digitalization into the space of elderly care. Since late 2018, we have brought the business to the UK market – with an office in the heart of the City of London.

About the team The myo team consists of 16 full time employees. We have 7 people working on the tech-side of the business while the others are responsible for operation, covering areas such as Business Development, Sales, Customer Success, Operations, Fundraising. The founders of myo are: Jasper Böckel – prior to his MBA from ESADE Business School, Jasper was a strategic consulting with Stern Stewart & Co for 6 years. He is responsible for sales, business development and product management. Richard Böckel – after studying PPE in Germany and at New College, Oxford, Richard joined a serial entrepreneur in Munich, being co-founder in one start-up whilst being employed in the main med-tech company. He is heading the UK business. Felix Kuna – prior to his MBA from IESE Business School, Felix was an investment professional with Blackstone and Quilvest for 5 years. He takes care of operations and all financial and legal matters such as fundraising and budgeting.

Skills We are looking for a motivated intern to help us in bringing our vision to the UK market. You are intellectually curious, have good people skills and like to think creatively and problem oriented. You have a hands-on mentality and are curious towards the healthcare/care market. Excellent communication skills are desirable as this is a people’s business. Being a native English speaker would be helpful, as you might be working on linguistic topics. This 3-month internship offers a fantastic opportunity to experience the fast-paced start-up environment and to be part of a relatively young, small team in the UK. You will be working very closely with us on our day-to-day tasks and have the chance to gain experience in:

• Operations – how do we implement our product in care homes?

• Business Development – how can we develop our product and what partnership opportunities are recommendable?

• B2B & B2C customer success – what do our users want? How do we ensure that our customers are satisfied? What is our competitive advantage? What do we learn from our analytics?

• Sales activities – how do we acquire new customers?

Professional development

At myo, our people come first – before product, definitely before profits. That’s because without

good, happy people on board, it’s impossible to create a world-class product, let alone achieve

sustainable profits. What does that mean for you?

● Create your own path and learn as you go. All things equal, we prefer cleverness to

experience, because the world is changing so fast that yesterday’s experience won’t

matter for long. Your development is our top priority so you will receive mentoring and

an education budget to put towards whatever you want to learn

● Shape the company and share the success. Got an idea for a new feature? Let’s talk!

We want you to leave your mark on what we are creating together and in turn we share

the success through an equity-based compensation component

● Make tomorrow better than today. Life is messy, and start-ups are chaotic. We accept

that and focus on making each day slightly better than the last

● Feel like part of a team. Our social committee will organize plenty of opportunities to get

to know and have fun with your colleagues

● Be fun, be different. Life is too short to accept boring. At myo, we don’t think that work

should be something to be endured, a place to hide your true self – we want your true

colours to shine through! We really believe that being fun and being different are sources

of strength for the business, not just empty bullsh*t to use in recruitment material like this

We look forward to your application and to share part of the journey with you.

Skills We look for people who are impatient and disciplined about making things happen as part of a high-performance team. We work in agile ‘sprints’ and structure our work based on each other’s strengths and interests. Each of us often take on high level of responsibilities from early on, then growing to become a team lead. We value driven teammates with good judgment, structured thinking, a focus on delivering results, and a passion about solving long standing world-scale problems, like poaching.

Experience in any of these areas would be beneficial:

• Marketing: supporting social media campaigns, creating promotional materials and contents, building brand outreach and improving engagement metrics.

• Market development: conducting primary and secondary market research to support commercialisation strategy and decision-making

• Business development: supporting commercial proposals, customer acquisition

• Implementing best practices, processes and systems to improve efficiency

• Building (high-performance) teams: building our brand, help attract and support talents

You must have very good spoken & written English, and previous experience delivering high-quality work/outputs as a team.

Professional development Explain some of the ways you would plan to support the intern(s) personal and professional development during their 3-month internship placement with your venture, highlighting opportunities for knowledge/skills development (e.g. regular 1-1s with founder(s), offer innovative learning experiences, create performance/growth plans, etc.) We have run internship placements since 2016, supporting from MBA to STEM and social sciences students, with the following structure:

• Each intern spends the first week with technical and general onboarding to learn about important concepts, skills and workflows, using a mixture of reading, recorded and live presentations, semi-guided tasks, and (paid) online courses.

• By the end of first week, we also help you set high-level tasks & goals to be achieved, plus training needs during your placement.

• Each 2-week work sprints involve a Monday sync (planning, setting results to be achieved, retrospectives, reviewing progress and priorities).

• You will be paired with one of the founders whom you report to, and other support buddies.

• The supervisor has the responsibility of reviewing your work, providing ongoing quick steers and feedback, and biweekly 1:1.

• There are also ad-hoc, broader team knowledge-sharing sessions (live or recorded). We also encourage you to participate in any events the company is participating – which we find useful for building commercial awareness.

• All interns can access our paid online learning platforms to learn in their own time. We are happy to consider follow-on opportunity with our successful candidates, whether that be a permanent position, or potential research collaborations. Placement title Internship

Start-up name Sibyl

Location Hythe Bridge Street, Oxford and Park End Street, Oxford

Hours Full time

Placement Duration 3 months (commencing April 2020)

About Sibyl Sibyl supercharges professionals to boost their impact. We are currently working with a top 50

UK law firm and a leading European insurer.

We trust professionals with some of the most important jobs in our society, but the way they operate hasn’t changed for hundreds of years. As a result, professionals are frustrated by repetitive work and the essential services they provide are not keeping pace with the modern world. Sibyl believes that technology can simplify these services, allowing professionals to focus their energy. We will transform multiple professions, starting with legal. Our current focus is on building a claim assessment tool for insurers and law firms, which will transform the way claims are handled. At the moment, a skilled professional has to read through paper piles for each claim and come to a view on prospects, likely costs and payouts. This process is expensive. Every year, organisations spend about £1.2bn and 16m hours on this initial assessment. In the cases where the outcome is obvious, there is no ongoing value as the case will settle quickly. Sibyl removes the need to read the claim documents. It instantly predicts quantitative claim statistics such as the chance of success and the potential costs. Organisations can resolve claims where the merits are clear, and let their best people concentrate on high-value marginal cases. This improves speed of service, and allows professionals to focus on the cases where they have most impact!

About the team The Sibyl co-founders all met at a Legal Hackathon organised by the Court Service (HMCTS), where they won the prize for coolest tech. Since then we have also recruited a fantastic developer. Nikul Vadgama, Head of Product and co-founder: Nik is a doctoral candidate in engineering at Oxford, with experience at Rolls-Royce and in the investment research industry. He makes sure the team is working together fantastically and that we’re building the right things. Sivo Daskalov, Head of Technology and co-founder: Sivo is a doctoral candidate in machine learning with commercial development experience at EuroRisk Systems. He works his magic to build solutions to the knotty problems our customers face, and has a track record of smashing every challenge.

Richard Strauss, Head of Commercial and co-founder: Richard is qualified lawyer with 5 years post qualified experience across the City, in-house and Government. After experiencing first hand the burden of repetitive work, he looked to technology to change this. He leads the sales effort, as well as providing legal insights for the product. Sneji Yanakieva, Developer: Sneji has a Master’s in computer science and commercial development experience working on a predictive portfolio management system. She works with Sivo across all elements of the stack, with particular experience in systems architecture.

Skills Above all else, we want to work with fantastic people who bring a different perspective to our thinking. You’ll need to have:

Professional development Our business is about helping people fulfill their potential in order to make a positive difference. That applies both to our customers and our team. To achieve this, we’re building a culture where everyone is clear on priorities, feels like they belong and can share mistakes and vulnerability. We will expect you to be open about what we’re doing well and where we can improve. And we promise to do the same. The internship is an opportunity to learn about all aspects of our business over a critical three months. We will be turning a successful pilot into an ongoing service, rolling out that service to early adopters and making sure they love it, building our brand, as well as raising money to support our growth plans. You will get rare insights into building a company through this exciting period. We need you to help:

● Develop our go-to-market strategy ● Talk to customers and ensure we stay focused on their biggest pain ● Make sure Sibyl is a thought leader on subjects that concern our customers ● Build our proposition to investors

You will be based at the Foundry but working closely with our remote team. This will involve a mix of regular 1-2-1s with founders and whole team meetings. We will agree a development plan with you and be clear about how this links to company objectives, making sure we review regularly and track progress. We’re confident it will be an exciting and rewarding experience!
