The 17th Annual
BEALTAINEFESTIVAL2014
May 1st - 31stCELEBRATING
CREATIVITYIN OLDER AGE
2 | Bealtaine Festival 2014
WELCOME
Donegal County Council’s Cultural Services welcomes you to the 17th annual Bealtaine Festival for older people. The Bealtaine Festival in Donegal has one of the most extensive programmes in the country. It features over 80 events in libraries / taobh tíre centres, arts and community venues, community hospitals and day care centres throughout the county. It is organised by the Regional Cultural Centre and Donegal County Library, in association with a wide range of partner organisations.
The range of Bealtaine events contained in this programme has something to suit everyone. All the events in the Exhibitions and Day by Day sections are open to the public and the vast majority are free of charge. There are special Bealtaine concessions available for other events. We encourage you to take advantage of this great opportunity and attend as many Bealtaine events as you can. Bealtaine in Donegal is part of a wider national month long arts festival, celebrating creativity in older age. Coordinated by Age & Opportunity, the festival covers all art forms, offers over 1,500 events countrywide and involves older people as performers, audience members and event organisers. A wide range of bodies throughout Ireland organise Bealtaine events, including the National Cultural Institutions, Local Authorities and older peoples’ organisations.
This year the theme for the festival is ‘And catch the heart off guard’ a phrase from Seamus Heaney’s poem Postscript. It is an invitation to be surprised by joy, to astonish yourself, to find your heart’s desire without looking for it.
FÁILTE
Cuireann Rannán na Seirbhísí Cultúrtha de chuid Comhairle Chontae Dhún na nGall fáilte romhaimh uilig chuig an 17ú Féile na Bealtaine, arna cur i láthair ag an tIonad Cultúrtha Réigiúnach agus Leabharlann Chontae Dhún na nGall, i gcomhar le réimse leathan eagraíochtaí páirtaíochta.
Is féile ealaíne náisiúnta do sheandhaoine í Féile na Bealtaine, atá comhordaithe ag Age & Opportunity. Tugann an Fhéile deis do sheanóirí an fhéith ealaíonta atá iontu a chur i ghníomh agus spreagtar iad le páirt a ghlacadh go cruthaitheach i níos mó ná 1500 imeachtaí ealaíona de gach cineál, ar fud na tíre. Bíonn réimse iontach leathan d’institiúdaí chultúrtha náisiúnta, rialtais áitiúl agus mórchuid eagraíochtaí ealaíona páirteach san iarracht comh-ordúcháin seo.
I mbliana, cuirfidh Féile na Bealtaine i nDún na nGall níos mó ná 80 imeachtaí i láthair i leabharlanna agus in ionaid Taobh Tíre, in ionaid phobail is ionaid ealaíne, in ospidéil phobail is ionaid lae, ar fud an chontae.
Is é téama Féile na Bealtaine na bliana seo ná, ‘And catch the heart off-guard’, líne as an dán ‘Postscript’ le Seamus Heaney. Séard atá ann ná, bheith oscailte do thaithí nua, iontas a chur ort fhéin is dúil do chroí a aimsiú gan dul sa tóir uirthi fiú.

QUARTETLifelong friends Wilf (Billy Connolly) and Reggie (Tom Courtney), together with former colleague Cissy (Pauline Collins), are residents of Beecham House, a home for retired opera singers. Every year on Giuseppe Verdi’s birthday, the residents unite to give a concert to raise funds for their home. But when Jean Horton (Maggie Smith), a former grande dame of the opera fallen on hard times, also Reggie’s ex-wife and the fourth and most celebrated member of their former quartet, moves into the home to everyone’s surprise, the plans for this year’s concert start to unravel. Quartet is a wickedly comic film about redefining old age and growing old with hope; demonstrating how art illuminates life and the human spirit remains undimmed even as the brightest stars start to fade. - BBC FilmsRegional Cultural Centre, Letterkenny, 7.00pm (98 Mins)Admission: Free but booking essential.Booking: 0749129186
