History

Niall Bracken will be reading from “Bullets and Boots” his light-hearted memoir of his time in the FCA (Fórsa Cosanta Áitiúil – the Local Defence Force). Although it is not intended that “Bullets and Boots” be in any way a history of the FCA, it nevertheless gives a flavour of the Force. Essentially it is one man’s wry memories of one boy’s madcap adventures – circa 1950. On request, it was read a short while ago to the Blackrock Historical Society in Dublin, and was extremely well received. “A group of friends and I joined the FCA, and it was manic. This

was the nineteen-fifties, and we were schoolboys. Five of us teen-angels signed up. We may not have been as pugnacious and wily as some of the Dublin inner-city boys, but we were certainly more creatively delinquent”. Bracken is also author of Boiled Beef and Carrots, a memoir of a Second World War suburban Dublin childhood; Now & Then, a collection of poems and other pieces; and co-author of The Dalkey Persuaders, a fictional account of the Advertising business in 1970s Dublin.
