REACH THE CLOUD FASTER.

Richard Wright | 317-431-4229

Today, more and more companies rely on the cloud to access information and share files so that teams can productively collaborate in real time, regardless of location. That means the speed and ease with which you access the cloud is just as important as what is stored there. Comcast Business Class Internet brings you the cloud at speeds up to 64 times faster than T1. Or flexible data solutions like Metro Ethernet make access to the cloud even better.

Restrictions apply. Not available in all areas. Speed comparison between Comcast 100 Mbps service and standard 1.5 T1 (downloads only). Actual speeds vary and are not guaranteed. Call for details. ©2011 Comcast. All rights reserved. NPA85659-0046

By B. Scott MohrAssistant editorWith a sinister and unmistakable laugh,

he rose from his coffin every Friday night as a cloaked, pale-faced ghoul who engaged in banter with his “floating” rubber spider, George.

Such is how most people know Robert “Bob” Carter, 82, who, as host of “Night-mare Theater,” portrayed horror film host Sammy Terry, who’s name is a play on the word cemetery. Carter, as Terry, introduced and occasionally be-rated the films and provided commer-cial-break entertain-ment on WTTV Channel 4 during the 1960s and ’70s and sporadically thereafter.

“He was wonder-ful, and everyone loved him. He be-came an instant hit,” says Phyllis Carter, his wife of 58 years. Sammy Terry was “born” when a furniture company heard Bob’s voice and wanted him to do a six-week com-mercial for them. His costume and makeup wasn’t as elaborate as what he would later don on the show. Phyllis recalls that it took her husband

an hour to apply his makeup and the same amount of time to take it off. And he did it all by himself. He also wrote all his scripts.

“It was a crazy old show, but everybody loved it,” she said with a proud tone to her voice. “I think it was popular because it was a much different time back then. People didn’t have a lot of money, so they made popcorn and drank Cokes around the TV.”

When WTTV purchased 50-plus hor-ror films from Universal Studies, Carter was chosen as the host of “Shock The-ater,” which originally included only still photographs punctuated by voice-over narration during commercials. The pro-gram morphed into the iconic “Nightmare Theater” and garnered Carter a large-scale following in central Indiana for his depic-

tion of Sammy Terry. During the 1980s, the old shows were re-aired at midday. While some might have thought his

antics to be a little strange, Phyllis didn’t think anything of it. “Being in the broadcast-ing business, it was part of his job. He had to wear many hats. We just went with the flow and enjoyed it. Our kids thought it was great, and they knew it was just ‘Dad being Dad.’ ”Even after Channel 4 closed, Carter’s stock was at a premium. He continued to make appearances around the state while run-ning Family Music Center at 46th Street and Shadeland Av-enue. He owned the business 25 years, retiring eight years ago.

Mark Carter, the couple’s young-est son, took a liking to his dad’s new personna and took an active role in the endeavor as a young child, as-sisting whenever he could. His interest grew over the years, and he began mak-ing appearances as Sammy Terry when his dad got out of the business about four years ago.

But that doesn’t mean ol’ Dad has lost his touch. He still has the voice and the sinister laugh, something that Mark practices on. “It’s incredible how recognizable Robert is without the costume. And when people hear that laugh or voice, they know who he is. People always approach him and ask to him to do ‘the laugh,’ and he has no problem with that because he’s gracious with his time,” says Phyllis. Mark has recently taken his show, which

includes an elaborate head-chopping act and eerie stories, to The Children’s Museum, Bloomington, Muncie and Linton.“This is really a busy time of year for him.

A new generation is catching on,” Phyllis says. She and Robert are natives of Decatur,

Ill., and graduated from Millikin University. They started dating when she was senior in high school and he was a freshman in

college. After earning a master’s degree from Syr-

acuse University, he worked as a disc jockey at a Fort Wayne radio station owned by Sarkes Tarzian. Upon moving to Indianapo-lis in the early 1960s, he gained employment at Tarzian’s WTTV studio. Phyllis taught school for 30 years, 25

of them in Perry Township. She celebrated her 80th birthday Oct. 7 and was treated to a grand party by her children. “It was so special that they could all make it. Some traveled from San Antonio and Illinois,” the octogenarian said. The Carters, longtime Southsiders who

lived near Adrian Orchards for 40 years before moving into Rosegate five years ago, have three other children: Kathy (Rick) Lowe, graduates of Southport; David (Sandy) Carter, Perry Meridian graduates; and Elizabeth (Brian) Smith, also a Perry graduate.

And there’s the 14 grandchildren and two great-granddaughters, who Phyllis says are “wonderful, beautiful and smart.”While the younger ones won’t get to

enjoy the frolicking behavior of the original Sammy Terry on Halloween, they can relish in the next-best thing: his son, who’s gain-ing widespread approval, especially from a ghoulish guy with an ominous laugh.

When Southport-area residents learned Saturday about the upcoming development of Peaceful Grounds at the old Redi-Mix plant location, probably only a few knew it was made possible by the donation of Elaine Norwood, who adopted the city as her home years ago. She be-came deeply involved with Perry Town-ship through her teaching career (mostly music) and also because she married into a family that helped develop Southport.

Now the family legacy cre-

ates another slice of Southport history. Worms already are at work to eventually create crop-growing soil at the site. There also will be a café and farm market later, all a project of the nonprofit Global Peace Initia-tive, head-quartered in Indianapolis.Linda Prof-itt, founder and executive director of the initiative, said the worm farm may continue two or three years. “We are a working farm right now.” The café could open by spring. Already restaurant equipment has been donated by chef Steve Graham and his wife, Dr. Amy Graham, a Southside chi-ropractor, Profitt said. Students from the University of India-napolis also will be involved at

Peaceful Grounds. The Redi-Mix property behind Gerdt Furniture was part of a tract that once was ceded by the United States to a Kentuck-ian, according to papers that Norwood possesses. Her late husband, Bill, was the last of family members who operated businesses on the site. A native of Marion, Elaine, 81, studied piano at Arthur Jor-dan Conservatory of Music, later part of Butler University, and got a master’s degree in voice at Indiana University.

One of her early teaching jobs was at Tech High School, but she soon was at Southport Elementary. “It used to be where the bank (PNC) is now,” she said. “It was a high school for a while. It was an old, old grade school, very smelly. And they tore it down.”Although Norwood’s field was music, she taught liberal arts and English there. “In those days, the trustee would hire you to teach anything if they had a

Colorful leaves mean fall-ing leaves ... and that means it’s time for the Indianapolis Department of Public Works to launch its annual leaf- collection campaign. The program runs through Dec. 2, and DPW expects to haul an estimated 12 million pounds of leaves to the city’s recy-cling facility, Households can put out up to 40 bags of leaves to be picked up weekly free of charge. In hand-collection areas, residents may set out up to 10 bags of trash in addition to leaves. When setting out items for pickup, trash needs to be separated from leaves. In 96-gallon cart-collection ar-eas, bagged leaves must be at least three feet from the cart in order to allow DPW to service the container. Additionally, all trash must fit inside the bin, as debris outside the cart will not be hauled away while leaves are being collected.Residents are asked to place leaves in plastic or paper bags by 7 a.m. on trash day and clearly identify and sepa-rate leaves from regular trash (place them on opposite sides of the driveway or in different colored bags). The city warns that residents should take care to ensure that sewer inlets and drainage pipes are kept clear of leaves and debris to avoid drainage and flooding problems.

Because leaves can be recycled into a useful product, they are composted by DPW and made available free of charge. Compost can be used as a soil conditioner, potting soil or mulch. Compost improves soil aeration, drain-age and nutrient exchange, improving the health of lawns and helping gardens grow.As a reminder, it is illegal to burn leaves in Marion County. The smoke pollutes the air and is hazardous to children and people with heart and lung disease.Call 327-4622 or visit indy.gov/dpw for more informa-tion.

History: Then & Now

The area that would become Beech Grove was first inhabited by members

of the Delaware, Wea, Miami, and Kickapoo Native American tribes. Through a series of treaties the land became the property of the U.S. Government, and in the early 1820s settlers began to buy parcels of land, clearing the timber for farmland. Drawn by the growth in the new Indiana State Capital, Indianapolis, farmsteads steadily replaced the old hardwood forests of the region.

One of Beech Grove’s most famous early residents was poet and women’s rights activist Sarah Tittle Bolton. In 1871 Bolton purchased farmland that she named “Beech Bank,” to reflect the abundance of beech trees in the area. Bolton lived there until her death in 1893, and the property was later purchased by the city and preserved as parkland. Francis McClintock Churchman, a prominent Indianapolis financier, purchased a large swathe of land in 1864 and established “Beech Grove Farm.” Churchman partnered with George Jackson, the first importer of Jersey cattle to America, and ran a successful dairy operation with his pedigreed herds. Other prominent early families included the MacGregors and Cottmans.

Beech Grove was an important farming community, so when the railroads came through a station was built along the line connecting Indianapolis and Cincinnati. Initially called Ingallstown, the name soon changed to Beech Grove Station. When the new town was establishing itself at the turn of the century it adopted the name of the station and officially became the Town of Beech Grove in 1906. When the “Big Four” (Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago, and St. Louis Railroad) completed a new 640-acre steam locomotive repair facility in 1908, droves of workers moved to Beech Grove. Churchman Avenue was

originally a personal road for Churchman that connected Fletcher Bank in downtown Indianapolis to his farm, but this became a major artery for the fledgling community. To accommodate the housing needed for the rail workers, the town established a grid of streets north of Churchman Avenue centered on the widened streets of Main and Fifth.

Beech Grove’s first church, Wesley Chapel, was built in 1837 just south of the current Amtrak Beech Grove Shops. Catholic, Methodist, Christian, and Baptist congregations developed early in the 20th Century. The community’s first school was the 1868 Poplar Grove one-room school, on New Bethel Pike, a mile west of First Avenue. A school was not opened within current city limits until 1907, when the space above William Wheat’s Store at 423 Main Street was converted to a classroom. Holy Name of Jesus School was built in 1922 and continues its Catholic education today.

St. Francis Hospital was built on the west end of downtown in 1914, eventually growing into one of Beech Grove’s largest employers. From 1910 to 1920 the town almost tripled in size, growing from 568 to 1,459 residents.

By 1935 the town had grown to a fifth-class city, allowing it to elect its first mayor and four city council members. In the 1940s the railroad facility peaked at around 6,000 employees. During the post-WWII “Baby Boom” new neighborhoods grew south of the old downtown in the modern style of curving streets and cul-de-sacs. Beech Grove became a fourth-class city in 1961, and when Indianapolis expanded its borders to include all of Marion County in 1970, Beech Grove was one of only four municipalities that were excluded. and towns were absorbed by “Unigov,” but Beech Grove maintained its own city government, school district, and police and fire departments. The city’s last annexation was in 1967, expanding Beech Grove to its current 4.3 square miles.

In the late 1970s the railroad facility was taken over by Conrail and Amtrak, employing around 700 workers. Conrail closed their operations in 1981, but Amtrak maintains the facility today on 108 acres of the original property, repairing locomotives and rail cars and manufacturing parts for trains that operate across the country. The Beech Grove Historical Society, established in 1978, works with the Beech Grove Public Library to maintain the Beech Grove History

Room, where visitors to the library can learn first-hand about their community’s rich history.

Beech Grove maintains a balance between small town and big city, with an old-fashioned Main Street featuring specialty shops and local flavor, and modern commercial and retail thoroughfares with busy shopping centers, national restaurant chains, and expansive industrial parks. While the city is landlocked by Indianapolis, it continues to evolve and grow with the new “Believe in Beech Grove” initiative. With a population of over 14,000, Beech Grove celebrated its Centennial in 2006, looking forward to the city’s next 100 years.

Whether it’s a family vacation hundreds of miles away or a weekend in Chicago, the numerous interstates and highways around Beech Grove make getting anywhere in the United States easy.

Commuting to, or shopping in, Indy can be as simple as hopping on an IndyGo bus and heading downtown. IndyGo’s Beech Grove route follows Emerson Avenue north to Main Street, where it continues west to 17th Avenue and jogs up to Albany Street. Business: Strong & Vibrant

As an historic part of a large metro area, Beech Grove fills the diverse needs of

large corporations, small family businesses, and everything in between. As Beech Grove grows and adapts to its changing public and private needs, residents, business owners, and government agencies work together toward a bright future for the community.

Beech Grove’s location is a key factor in its successful business community. With easy and quick access to major interstates and an international airport, area businesses are at an advantage over more remote locations. The transportation infrastructure also aids businesses by getting commuters and customers in, out and around Beech Grove with ease.

Beech Grove’s traditional commercial and retail “downtown” stretches along Main Street from Emerson Avenue west to 8th Street. Two Centennial Towers mark the entryway into downtown, where there is a mixture of retail, services, restaurants, and office space.

Emerson Avenue is Beech Grove’s busiest thoroughfare and is lined with even more offices, restaurants, and retail shopping. In 2008 the Emerson Avenue redevelopment project was awarded a Community Achievement Award to mark the revitalization of the corridor. This included new pavement, sidewalks, lighting, landscaping, and planters. Much of the recent commercial construction has centered around the busy intersection of Emerson and I-465 on the city’s south side.

Much of southeastern Beech Grove is dominated by business and industrial parks. This area stretches east from Emerson Avenue along Elmwood Avenue and surrounds the intersection of Arlington Avenue and Churchman Bypass. Amtrak Beech Grove Shops is a repair and parts manufacturing shop that sits on 108 acres in eastern Beech Grove. This 600-employee facility services Amtrak engines and cars, from the Locomotive Shop to the Trim Shop.

As Beech Grove continues to evolve and improve, several key organizations help the business community prosper. The Greater Beech Grove Chamber of Commerce promotes area businesses, offering guidance and support.

Recreation

Beech Grove residents enjoy outdoor recreational activities year-round, from

Little League games at Hartman Park to enjoying some leash-free time at the Paw Patch dog park. The parks system encompasses around 100 acres, and includes four parks and a community center.

The largest of the properties is Sarah T. Bolton Park, a 30-acre park purchased in 1930 from the Bolton Estate and named in honor of the Hoosier poet. Located near the heart of Beech Grove, Bolton Park is also the location of many festivals and celebrations throughout the year. Residents come to the park to watch Independence Day fireworks, listen to free live concerts, compete in the annual Halloween Costume Contest, and meet Santa Claus. Additionally, special children’s programs and sporting events are held frequently during the summer months.

Hartman Park is the focal point for youth baseball in Beech Grove. The park’s five diamonds are busy all summer long, and are used for several age groups. Continuing south on 9th Avenue from Hartman Park is the small South Grove Park. Adjacent to South Grove Intermediate School, this park features a picnic shelter and a playground.

On Beech Grove’s east side, just west of the high school and next to Hornet Park Elementary School, is the Hornet Park Community Center. This is a popular facility for large receptions and events and has a banquet hall with attached kitchen. The Community Center also includes the Fitness Center, which is open seven days a week and offers memberships. Classes at the Fitness Center range from spinning to belly dancing, with traditional weight training and aerobics classes offered throughout the year.

In 2007 the city was awarded a $1 million grant from the Indiana Department of Transportation for the development of a new 4.2-mile pedestrian greenway through the city. To be constructed in three phases, the final trail will connect the Community Center, Sarah Bolton Park, and a proposed 36-acre sports park at the northwest corner of Subway Street and Emerson Avenue.

Shopping & Dining

Beech Grove’s retail options cover all of the basics and include specialty shops

unique to the community. Groceries are available at two Marsh Supermarkets, west of downtown and on Thompson Road, as well as Wal-Mart and Kroger on the far south side. Numerous convenience stores are around town for a quick gallon of milk or other basic necessities.

Downtown offers a wide variety of shops, including boutiques, a meat market, hard-ware store, flower shop, jeweler, quilt shop, and shoe store. Several pharmacies and small shops are near the former St. Francis Hospital campus northwest of downtown on Albany Street.

Most of Beech Grove’s shopping is concen-trated along Emerson Avenue the length of the city. This newly rehabilitated corridor is a mixture of retail, dining, and services. South of Churchman Avenue clusters of shopping centers and plazas make it easy for residents to park once and shop at several stores.

The newest and largest retail area is along Emerson Avenue from the I-465 overpass to the busy intersection at Thompson Road. “Big box” stores like Lowe’s and K-mart are surrounded by smaller retailers selling auto parts, pets, furniture, clothing, paint, cell phones, electronics, and lawn & garden

supplies. Services in the area include fram-ing, movie rentals, equipment rentals, ship-ping, auto repair, and gas stations. Some of the prominent centers are Emerson Plaza Shoppes, Emerson Plaza, and South Pointe Commons.

Beech Grove’s dining options are as varied as the tastes of its residents. A blend of local establishments, national chains, ethnic restaurants, fast food, and pizzerias share the same busy thoroughfares as Beech Grove’s retailers.

Main Street is home to several unique res-taurants that are favorite local haunts. From upscale Italian to a traditional small town diner, these establishments add to the flavor of downtown. Northwest of downtown sev-eral restaurants are on Albany Street west of 17th Avenue.

Fast food chains are sprinkled along Emerson Avenue from Main Street south to the Thompson Road shopping centers. Most of the popular national and regional chains have locations in or near Beech Grove. Altogether, more than 25 restaurants can be found just along Emerson Avenue. The variety of options includes Mexican, Chinese, steakhouses, pizza, and sandwich shops. Among the shops of Thompson Road are interspersed additional dining choices.

Lifestyles & Neighborhoods

Beech Grove has experienced several “growth spurts” since its incorporation

over a century ago. Many of the houses built in the first boom of the 1910s have been replaced over the years, but some historic homes still dot the neighborhoods around downtown Beech Grove, where traditional residential blocks and an old-fashioned Main Street remind us of the city’s humble beginnings.

Although Beech Grove is landlocked by Indianapolis, it continues to evolve and grow within its own borders. With just over 14,100 residents, the city draws newcomers from near and far in search of an independent community with all of the advantages of living in a large metropolitan area. Beech Grove offers good schools, reasonable tax rates, and a wide range of housing choices. Older, more affordable homes in traditional American Foursquare and bungalow styles are available, as are newer, spacious homes in the subdivisions on the city’s south side.

For the city’s older residents, senior housing and assisted living centers offer comfortable and affordable homes where residents enjoy social activities, outings, and access to quality healthcare. Beech Grove Meadows and St. Paul Hermitage provide for all stages of retirement, from “Garden Homes” to hospice care.

The housing diversity in Beech Grove includes single family homes, apartment complexes, townhouses, and duplexes. The average cost of an existing home in the city is $89,850, though newer homes in the southern subdivisions can be found for between $155,000 and $265,000. Most homes for sale are in the older neighborhoods of the north side, where prices trend much lower.

A majority of the single-family homes sit on quiet residential streets lined with sidewalks and dotted by mature trees. Beech Grove is a city where children can ride their bikes and play in front yards, and families can take long walks together.

The City of Beech Grove is continually improving the quality of life for its residents, from the rehabilitation of Main Street and Emerson Avenue to the City Digital Project, which brought free high-speed internet service to all homes and businesses. Beech Grove residents take a lot of pride in their homes, community, and city, and this pleasure is reflected in the faces one passes on the street.

Government: Serving the People

Beech Grove is governed by the City Council, elected officials that represent

four districts within the city limits, with two additional councilpersons that elected by the community at large. These council members serve four-year terms and meet the first Monday of the month at 7:00 pm at City Hall.

An elected Mayor oversees Beech Grove’s day-to-day operations, and a Clerk-Treasurer serves as the city’s fiscal officer. The city operates a city court and a senior citizens center, and also oversees sewer maintenance and trash collection.

Each component of city government, from the Greenscape Commission and the Parks Department to the Redevelopment Commission, works with the council and Mayor to manage the growth and development of Beech Grove, while ensuring that the high quality of life expected by residents does not diminish in any way.

The Beech Grove Police Department has been active since 1906, working hard to ensure the safety and security of the city’s residents. The department works closely with the Beech Grove Crime Watch and mentors children through the DARE and Shop with a Cop programs.

Also answering the call to duty are Beech Grove’s thirty-two career firefighters. In addition to civilian paramedics, three-quarters of the firefighters are certified paramedics and the rest are EMTs. The department is very active in fire prevention through inspections and educational programs. All K-3 students “Learn Not To Burn” from local firefighters and 8th-grade students receive two weeks of CPR training.
