Charles Sturt University is running a project called ‘Girls in Cyber Security Advancing (GiCSA)’.

The project is aimed at giving girls in year 9 and 10 a chance to learn about cyber security and potential career paths in

information technology in a tertiary setting.

No background knowledge is needed, you just have to be willing to learn.

The project details and schedule of workshops is available on the project website: www.csu.edu.au/gicsa

Workshops will run for 3 days, and will be held across CSU campuses in Albury, Bathurst, Dubbo, Orange, Port-

Macquarie, and Wagga Wagga. The first one is in Wagga Wagga on 20 – 22 November 2018. Others will be held at

various locations in March, April, June and July 2019.

Girls who attend these workshops will experience a range of activities including presentations, discussions and hands-on

tasks. Taking part in these activities will also help prepare the girls for our Cyber Security Challenge in October 2019. Upon completion of the workshop, students will receive a certificate

of participation.

This project is funded by the Australian Government and will not cost anything to the participants or schools except the

travel to attend the workshops at CSU campuses. Travel and accommodation cost to attend the final Leadership and

Entrepreneurship workshop in Wagga Wagga will be covered.

Girls can directly go on the following link and register to participate in project:

https://bjbs.csu.edu.au/schools/computing-and-mathematics/gicsa/the-project/workshop-registration

Each year the Australian Children's Music Foundation run a free songwriting competition that is open to all Australian children of school age. It's easy to enter - students simply need to upload an MP3 recording of their song, along with a lyric sheet, using the online entry form on our website.

The songs are judged by the quality of the songwriting, not the quality of the production. An entry could be as simple as a recording on a mobile phone, with or without instruments, or as complex as a fully produced studio recording - it doesn't matter!

It's completely free to enter - the idea behind the competition is to encourage children to be creative!

Prizes are in the form of cash that must be spent on either musical instruments or tuition - hopefully encouraging a continuation of participation in music for the successful individuals.

More information on the ACMF National Songwriting Competition can be found at http://acmf.com.au/national-songwriting-competition/.

Upcoming FREE Webinar Parties, gatherings and sleepovers:

How can parents keep their teen safe?

Wednesday, 3 October at 6 pm I hour presentation

This webinar is for parents and guardians of teenagers who are looking for strategies to help keep their child safe at parties.

Teenage parties provide young people with valuable opportunities to develop a range of social skills that they need to relate effectively with their peers. As they get older, alcohol is more likely to become a part of these social gatherings and, unfortunately, things can go wrong.

This presentation will examine what we know about school-based young people and alcohol use and its use at parties. It will also provide practical strategies and simple tips for parents considering allowing their teen to attend such events to help ensure they are as safe as possible.

To register go to: https://positivechoices.org.au/teachers/parties-gatherings-and-sleepovers and follow the links.

The Lab

The Lab is a technology club for young people on the autism spectrum.

The Lab brings young people together in a social environment, where they share aspirations with like-minded others. At each session, specialist IT mentors, support staff and the program coordinator are all on hand to help and support participants.

Tulgeen provides an environment where participants can share their interests in thing like gaming together, video creation and sharing, graphic design, programming and game development.

We take an unstructured approach, so every session can be different. The Lab is a cool and accepting place to visit, hang out and learn while having fun.

At the Lab, we are committed to ensuring the safety of everybody attending Lab sessions. We have a range of policies and protocols, including screening of those working with children and training programs and procedures.
