Principal’s Report Achievement = Engagement It was very satisfying to be able to celebrate students' high rates of attendance for the first 70 days of this school year at recent Year Meetings. Several students were acknowledged for 100% attendance so far, and every student is encouraged to stay engaged as much as possible - for their own learning success and for their future health and wellbeing. The attendance rate is currently 85%, with more than 675 students above 80% and everyone is reminded that even missing a couple of hours of school a week all adds up to missed opportunities.

Reporting Season This week Year 12 students were the first to receive academic reports produced using data from the new Sentral database. If you have any questions about report content please contact the school to speak with Mrs Jennifer Smith or Mr Scott to discuss (64929000). As has been mentioned earlier, parents and carers can access student data, and now reports, in the Sentral parent portal - just ring to receive an access code.

Future-focused Meeting the educational and social challenges and opportunities afforded students, staff and the Bega community is an ongoing focus of Bega High School. A recent panel of community and education representatives contributed to realising that goal by selecting a new Principal - I had great pleasure in accepting the position and look forward to working with Bega valley students into the future as they develop into self-confident and lifelong learners, and informed, compassionate and responsible citizens.

Learning and Engagement Survey Students who attend school regularly are more likely to achieve educational success, and increase their career and life options. Student attendance has been identified as an important aspect of a student’s wellbeing, while poor patterns of attendance place students at risk of not achieving their educational, social and psychological potential.

Reduced engagement with learning opportunities and with peers could also reduce the quality of choices that individuals are able to make in later life situations.

Communities benefit from students who regularly attend school and are achieving. These benefits include greater student safety, community wellbeing, and a sense of connectedness for all.

The school is looking at possibilities for celebrating and acknowledging students who demonstrate their engagement in learning through their attendance rates.

We are also revising strategies for increasing the school’s attendance rate for all students. In this survey we are asking students, parents/carers and staff members about their preferences and asking for other suggestions.

Quota International’s 2016 Student of the Year Quest

Quota International of Narooma Inc has pleasure in inviting Bega High School students to participate in the 2016 Student of the Year Quest. Students from Years 9, 10 and 11 are eligible to participate.

Our club hopes that a number of your students will be encouraged to accept this opportunity to gain valuable experience through participating in the Quest.

The Quest has two aspects. Firstly, a panel of independent judges will interview and assess the contestants on personality; sporting and cultural interests; general knowledge; citizenship and leadership potential. These interviews will be followed by the public speaking section of the competition held in the evening after dinner.

Additional Information: Please bring warm clothes, drink, hat and sunscreen. Asthma sufferers are asked to bring their medication. A canteen will be organised as a fundraiser for Cambodia, so please bring your money or food for lunch.

Students attending the carnival must stay with their age group for all sessions so that there is active supervision all the time. Students will be encouraged to compete at each event. Students will not be allowed to get a pass during the day.

Students are reminded that the Skate Park, The Reject Shop, McDonalds and other shops within the vicinity of the Recreation grounds are all Out of Bounds.

Buses have been arranged to drop off and pick up the students near the Primary Fields.

Squash Report Trials were recently held at Bomaderry courts for selection into the South Coast Regional Team.

This team plays against all other regions at the State Championships, which are to be held at Coffs Harbour in week 10 this term. Traditionally the South Coast team has a strong component of players from Bega High and this year is no exception.

Congratulations to Blake Dowling, Joel Tamatea, Jordan Tarlinton, Nikki Tarlinton (all year 12) and Chloe Harlow (year 11) for their selection into the team.

Blake and Nikki will be enjoying their second year on the team and will be excellent role models for their team mates.

Congratulations also to Alexander Eadie (year 9) for being selected to represent the South Coast in the 15’s competition. This will add to the experience he gained last year playing for the team.

Thanks go to David Eadie for providing transport on the day and driving some of the students to Bomaderry. His time and support were greatly appreciated.

We wish these students all the best as they train and fundraise for the Championships.

Bega High Interschools Equestrian Championships 28 April – 1 May Five students from Bega High participated in this event at Snowy Mountains Grammar School, Jindabyne.

The team was fifth overall in the school point score out of a large number (roughly 40) of very competitive schools from all of NSW and the ACT.

Individual results are as follows:

Esther Black: Year 10 Age Champion Champion Secondary Showjumper 3rd place in the one day event Division 3 3rd place in Interschool showjumping challenge Equal 1st in Secondary six bar – jumping 1.25 m Equal 8th in a dressage test 2nd place in showjumping (105 cm) 1st place showjumping (115 cm) 5th place Stockman’s challenge (year 9/10)

2016/17 Rural and Regional School Travel

From 12 May 2016, applications for free school travel in rural and regional NSW will need to be completed online instead of using paper forms.

This change makes it easier to apply, as you only need to complete one form that covers all situations, including journeys that involve multiple transport operators.

This change only affects the application process; no changes to any public transport services are planned.

Pathways to a Career in Health On Monday 16th May, a group of 16 Year 10, 11 and 12 students were welcomed by the University of Wollongong, Bega Campus for a health career day.

Students were shown around the simulated hospital ward and shown many aspects of working in nursing. The staff and nursing students gave practical demonstrations from taking blood pressure to changing patient linen.

Our students were able to use equipment and gain practical experience in a range of nursing skills. It was wonderful to see the students interact in a professional environment including past students of Bega High now enrolled in the nursing course.

After being treated to a delicious lunch hosted by the University, students had the opportunity to listen to health workers in a variety of health services, including nursing, mental health, drug and alcohol rehabilitation, disability and other social and community services.

The speakers gave students practical advice and told their personal experiences of getting into their chosen fields. These talks enlightened students about the many pathways available to gaining experience and qualifications in a range of health careers. Overall, students gained insight into the realities of working in health and the many options available to them.

Local services also provided students with hats, t-shirts, pamphlets and a range of goodies promoting different issues and services in the local area.

The staff and students at Bega High School thank the staff and students and speakers at the University for their time and practical advice. The University plans to offer similar opportunities to our students in the future.

Zone Cross Country Wolumla 20th May Bega High recently took a team of 35 students to compete in the 2016 Zone Cross Country. The students representing our school had a fabulous attitude. They encouraged and mentored one and other, fostering a fun but competitive spirit. They also looked great in our new representative athletics singlets.

We finished the day with 15 athletes finishing in the top 6 of their field and 2 students as reserves. These students will be off to Cambewarra on Friday to compete at the Regional level.

Four Winds Presents: RADICAL VOICE #2 with Costa Georgiadis

Costa Georgiadis, landscape architect and well known TV personality, is coming to Bermagui. Costa will be visiting three local schools during the day and will learn more about the Four Winds Native Species Arboretum when he visits the Four Winds site.

Costa will deliver Radical Voice #2 – a talk in which he will speak about his experiences of the arts, ecology, environment and community – and how this fits in a national context. The 45-minute talk will be followed by an audience Q and A – come and put your questions to Costa.

TAIKO Japanese Drumming | Beginners Workshops for Young People & Adults

11-12 June, Long Weekend, 2016 Windsong Pavilion, Four Winds, Bermagui

Warm up your June long weekend with a Japanese Taiko drumming workshop with Ryuji Hamada from Taikoz.

There are 90 minute beginners’ workshops on Saturday – for young people, and Sunday – for adults both starting at 1pm in the Windsong Pavilion. No previous experience necessary.

The Crossing

July fruit tree grafting day at The Crossing A fruit tree grafting day will be held at The Crossing on Thursday 28 July thanks to the help of Neil Barraclough, an heirloom and heritage fruit grower from Gippsland

Workshop registration of $20 is needed by the end of May so that we know how much rootstock to order for the Thursday July 28 Workshop. Please bring your own labelled scion and rootstocks to share/swap/barter if you have any. Each grafted tree will cost $10 on the day and all funds raised will go towards The Crossing. Please indicate on enrolment how many rootstocks you may wish to purchase.

Sea to Snow 2 months still to go Half the applications are now filled for the 9 day Sea to Snow Journey for Year 10 students.

This 250km ‘journey with altitude!’ is an incredible achievement for young people, a conversation starter with new employers and an excellent leadership certificate for uni scholarships applications.

From the sea at Bermagui to the Snowy Mountains of NSW, this experience becomes a lifetime memory. Up to 7 guys and 7 girls are accepted each year for the journey. But first they must apply for and complete a 3 day leadership training camp at The Crossing in August that prepares everyone for the journey in September.

The 9 day journey starts two days before the end of Term 3 in NSW and goes into the first week of the September school holidays.

There are also two journey scholarships available for aboriginal students who complete the training camp. These two scholarships are provided by the Biamanga National Park Board of Management.

Sea to Snow Leadership Achievement The Sea to Snow Journey develops leadership skills and confidence, and provides life-long friendships. The Journey can also contribute to a gold Duke of Edinburgh Award. This involves an additional online application to the NSW Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme with an associated registration fee. ‘Get into the wild and find yourself’
