Von Zubinski includes Kirsten Fabinski and Zuni Fellehner, who founded a graphic design agency together (www.vonzubinski.de). They design merchandising products, illustrate in the FAZ and are authors of the Kinder Künstler Bücher der Ateliergemeinschaft LABOR. Just like Moni Port (www.laborproben.de), who recently published the picture book, Der Krakeeler with Philipp Waechter for Beltz & Gelberg.

You just have to love Bollo. He is always there when the big kids discover something wonderful. Bollo is their small friend who always helps them out. A 24-page cardboard book for young readers who know that playing in the mud is lots of fun!

Bollo is still small, but bigger than a cat. Bollo is curious. And so proud when the big kids take him along to the creek. They run through meadows with lots of flowers down to the creek, where they play in the mud – digging holes, forming balls and things like that. And they discover a salamander. Then Bollo gets stuck. »Don’t worry, Bollo, we’ll help you!« They fetch lots of buckets of water to clean everyone up again. Bollo likes that. Now the three can go home happy and hungry. What an adventure!

Philip Waechter, born in 1968, studied communication design in Mainz, and lives and works as an illustrator in Frankfurt am Main. He is a member of the studio cooperation Labor. All of his picture books were published with Beltz & Gelberg, most recently Der Krakeeler, together with Moni Port.

There are children who are a bit different than the others – Jacob is one of them. He can fly! Philip Waechter tells of an amazing adven-ture, a rescue mission and a celebration among birds. A new magical picture book done in Waechter’s unforgettable style.

Time to leave for summer vacation. Jacob accompanies his parents to the airport, where they board their plane – and he flies off on his own to the south. On the way, he joins 142 birds who are on their way to Africa. When one of the little birds has trouble (his name is Johann), Jakob has an incredible idea how to save him from the bird catcher. Birds are namely clever and stick together. After their mission is accomplished, he contin-ues on his way to join his parents, who are already waiting on the beach!

The world is big to a small tomcat who has lost its way. Being afraid of the unknown, something children know well, is the topic of Lena Pflüger’s debut book as an illustrator. She managed to get hold of the topic and tame it with impressive strokes.

Bang! Tires squeal, loud horns honk – tomcat Murr bolts off. Kristina Dunker accompanies him with light-footed rhymes into the dark realms of the subway tunnels, where Killerkalle, the rat boss, reigns. Luckily Murr meets the raven Hinke-Klaus, who befriends him. Lena Pflüger’s suspending world of illustrations cast a spell over readers, playing with contrasts of dark and light.

How it is to feel frightened about not finding the way home again …

Atelier Flora consists of four female artists who work in Berlin Pankow. They create book projects, magazine articles, advertis-ing, cartoons and radio broadcasts there. The four worked on All Colour for months, scouring their surroundings for suitable ob-jects. It is their first book together – Judith Drews (illustrator and designer), Andrea Peter (illustrator and designer), Cally Stronk (author) and Regina Voss (radio journalist and cartoonist). Judith Drews published the cardboard book series featuring the rabbit Anton with Beltz & Gelberg.

What do Santa Claus, the theater curtain, ketchup and blood all have in common? Right, they are all red! This fascinating concept picture book shows what secrets the world of colours has to reveal. Each page brings on new wonders.

Even the youngest start to tell tales of the playfully connected pictures and adults will find themselves inspired to creatively associate colours and pictures. Atelier Flora has collected the world of colours in paper and clay, in sketches and photos and put them in order, to stimulate con-scious observation. A book of colours that is a feast for the eyes!

Silke Wolfrum teaches at a professional school and works as author for the Bavarian Broadcasting Station. She writes stories, fea-tures, radio plays and comedies for children. Together with her husband and daughter she lives in Munich.

14 Children‘s Book

Every evening, 4-year-old Klee asks his big sister Fanny a question. And because he won’t calm down until she answers his sim-ple question, she dreams up outlandish tales teeming with princesses, kings and knights.

When Fanny puts her little brother Klee to bed at night, it doesn’t take long for him to ask his daily question. There is always something on his mind. Why do we grow hair? Why can’t people fly? Why do we have to wear pyjamas? Although Fanny is only 8, she still feels she has to give him an answer. So she creates one ... People used to sleep naked, she tells him. Then one night a bed spook started skiing on peo-ple’s tummies and that tickled so much, that people have been wearing pyjamas since then. Wonderfully amusing and creative bedtime stories to read aloud or together. And then it’s time to dream on!

Filipa’s father tells her that they are going back to Portugal on her 11th birthday. Great – and all she wanted was a dog! And what does she care if her father has the chance to open his own restaurant there? Filipa is at home in Neustadt, and that is where she wants to stay! She is not about to give in so easily and goes to drastic measures, with the help of her over-protected friend, Nele, to stay in Germany. When the two girls run away to the mountains, things start to get dangerous. Filipa tries every-thing, but she finally has to give in and search for happiness in Portugal. What does Uncle Jorge always say? »If you don’t go out to sea, you’ll never discover new land.«

A small German town. Three girls. And one vision – will they survive?

Jeanette Wagner, Ulrike Molsen and Miram Sachs are screenwriters and producers between the ages of 35 and 41 years of age. The authors are partially familiar with small town life from their own youth and finally had to write something about it.

16 Youth Book

Charlie (everybody’s darling), Lu (self-pitying ec-centric) and Sunshine (a passionate cynic) live in a boring small town and go to the pub every Friday evening. But that is about all they have in com-mon. If it weren’t for the mysterious vision that the girls have during a thunderstorm. The vision predicts in all clarity that all three will die.

Is it all a bunch of nonesense? When Charlie encoun-ters things she saw in the vision in reality, she starts to feel very worried. Certain she is about to die, she tries to convince her friend Lu to take the vision seriously. But she doesn’t believe in that “esoteric rubbish” and prefers hanging out with Sunshine, the outsider. Charlie is jealous and desperate – and in love for the first time. With Linus. What do you do when your whole life is suddenly in question? Run away? Get high? Enjoy your last days and do everything you’ve always wanted to do? Then something happens that convinces even Lu and Sunshine of how serious things are. And a terrible suspicion falls on Linus. The girls have only one choice – they have to find their poten-tial murderer!

The first of an unusual trilogy full of unexpected twists and turns, thrilling suspension and a setting that finally deserves worthy praise – a German small town with scurillous extras, incredible parties, unbe-lievable boredom, music from yesteryear and pysche-delic sessions at the lake.

Germany in the near future: People are flocking to the cities, nature has been a luxury good and the destruction of the last, untouched paradises of our planet is nearly complete. The great extinction of species and climate change have long begun – with dramatic consequences for humankind...

Cat is a passionate environmentalist. One of her dreams comes true when she starts work in a wildlife conservation project in the rainforest of Guyana. And even better – Falk, her mentor in environmental is-sues and the love of her life, is also participating. One of the last untouched natural paradises on earth is waiting for her in Guyana. Yet there have been phar-maceutical companies from all over the world here since researchers succeeded in making a medication for AIDS from a rare plant. Cat is furious and helpless – until Falk reveals the true purpose of their mission to her: The group has developed a dangerous derma-tophyte to keep people away from the jungle. The first attacks are already in progress. Cat is horrified, but also fascinated at the same time. Is Falk right – does the cause justify such drastic measures? Then a terrible accident occurs. Suddenly Cat has to flee, all alone through the jungle she is pursued as a traitor. Can she prevent the great catastrophy?

To believe or not to believe – that is the question!

Martin Dreyer, born in 1965 in Hamburg, is the founder of the Jesus Freaks and initiator of the project Volxbibel, a free translation of the New Testament on the Internet. Belief and religion are often closely knit in his life and he has spoken at numerous events on this topic. The interviews for this book were exclusive. He lives with his wife, Rachel, and their young daughter in Berlin.

18 Specialised Book

What do people mean when they say they believe? Believe in God? Or Allah or Jahwe? Does it mean that person goes to church, the mosque or syna-gogue? And what does it mean not to believe?

27 texts and interviews with adolescents and adults, celebrities and non-celebrities about their beliefs. This book collects different voices – of Christians, Muslims, Jews, Buddhists and many more.

Actress Jasmin Tabatabai always thinks of supersti-tion when she thinks of belief, whereas Eckart von Hirschhausen asks himself if such monumental build-ings like cathedrals are necessary in order to believe. Laura, age 19, thinks that belief is interesting, but she herself is not a believer, whereas Enise, age 16, openly displays her religious belief at school despite all hostili-ties. Producer Dani Levy thinks about what being a Jew means to him, and Giovanni di Lorenzo is reminded of his mother, who hoped that at least one of her sons would become a priest.

The analysis and examination of belief and religion is personal – just like the texts in this book. It contains exciting and unusual texts on different persuasions and religious denominations that show that there is no hard and fast answer to the question »What do I believe in?«.

Biography Beltz & Gelberg 19

Kurt Cobain was one of the most influential musicians of his time together with his band, Nirvana. A sensitive, irate person and a brilliant musician, who, like Jim Morrison and Janis Joplin, was destroyed by his dreams at the magic age of 27. A profoundly radical life story.

Cobain grew up under difficult circumstances in the middle of nowhere in the American northwest. He found an anchor in music. His authentic texts moved a whole generation, where the song Smells like Teen Spirit became their hymn. Yet he failed to come to terms with his own life, torn and full of controversies, caught up in drugs and shattered by the ruthless music industry.Marcel Feige recounts the life story of the angry outsider and highly sensitive artist as a story of a lifelong search. Cobain, who loved and hated so much and unwillingly became a major celebrity after the Nirvana album Nevermind (1991) came out, just wanted to make music. Nothing less – and nothing more.

»For the moment it was only ninety minutes of concentrated, honest rock, arduous, exhausting, destructive – yet the thing that Cobain loved doing most: making music. Nothing more, nothing less.«Marcel Feige on the Nirvana gig at the Reading Festival
