from the Rabbi's Desk...

Making each day count…Usually, my article at this time of year will focus on “Wherever you go, there’s always someone Jewish,” as we make our way into the summer months and our summer travels. Not quite so this summer.

As we spend more and more time in a new, but hopefully not too permanent, normal, we can lose hold of a sense of purpose in our lives. Too much time at home… Too much time on our own… Too much time between phone calls or zoom meetings… Too much time watching too much television… Too much time cooking much more than usual… Too much time. Period.

In a recent article Mason Harris, business person and inspirational speaker, pointed out just how important having and maintaining that sense of purpose is to our lives. Based on the work of Viktor Frankl, Austrian psychologist noted for his book Man’s Search for Meaning, Harris reminds us of a proven path for survival, both emotional and physical – the power of finding meaning in one’s life.

What enables us to find meaning when we’re overwhelmed with stress, and uncertainty in these very challenging times? What drives people to persevere, no matter what the obstacles?

As we seek to both survive and thrive once again, Harris points to five elements that can very well contribute to our success:

1. Spiritual beliefs: The belief in something greater than us can be helpful in calming our fear of the unknown. [Participating in our weekly online live Shabbat services could very well be more than convenience, it could very well be about gaining critical and spiritual perspective.]

2. Acts of kindness: In addition to our natural desire to protect one’s family and oneself during times of stress, stories and images of others reaching out to assist people in greater need

inspire us. This is an opportunity to be kinder to others, even if separated by a physical door or an electronic connection. Call friends and relatives to check-in on their well-being. [Pay for the person in the car behind you at the drive-through. Tip the people assisting you at the drive-through window. Leave a thank-you for your mail carrier. Call a temple member you haven’t seen for a while to say hi.]

3. Images of loved ones and friends: We may be separated from family and friends during this stressful time, but pictures, video, and FaceTime are wonderful prescriptions for generating smiles, good memories, and optimism.

4. A sense of humor: Go ahead and laugh. [Tell bad jokes to family members or friends; groaners still garner a chuckle! Watch your favorite (or new) comedians online – or the sit-coms you grew up with… still funny after all these years!]

5. Appreciate the healing beauties of nature: From spring to summer, we can trace the new budding leaves to the full-grown greenery on the trees, and the flowers, and the birdsongs…

To these five elements, I would add a sixth: know that you are so worth it! Seek within yourself the energy and capacity to think creatively. Understand that happiness and purpose are found in the doing, not necessarily in the having done.

Viktor Frankl taught us to always be open to new ways of seeing the world and experiencing one’s self in the world; we have the ability to make decisions and take responsibility for our own life through our own actions, based on the demands of each day. It may sound trite, but truly, don’t count the days – but make each day count in some way.

Forward… together, Rabbi [email protected]

Remembering the Destruction of the Temples and Jewish Responses to Catastrophe & Exile

Tisha b'Av commemorates the destruction of the first and second Temples in Jerusalem, traditionally assigned to this date in 586 B.C.E. and 72 C.E., respectively. For Spanish

Jewry, the day has an additional significance, since it coincides with the accepted date of the 1492 expulsion

edict of the Spanish Inquisition. The collection of readings includes excerpts from the book of Eicha/Lamentations,

diaries and poetry across time, and words of song and hope in modern times.

from the President's Corner...

We enter the summer months with an abundance of questions as wide as our minds can conceive; some of us have drawn answers from a similarly vast array of experts and those that think they have attained such status. Funny thing, my mother always said the future was not something to bet on.

Thus, please let me explain what your leadership groups have been doing; what we have been thinking about; what we can clearly foresee and what remains to be decided.

1. The Rosenblum Historical Marker project remains in place; the Ohio Historical Society is slightly behind schedule. I am quite hopeful that the marker will be in place before December 31st, 2020.

2. Our OnBoard Grant has provided funding for simulcast equipment and software.

3. Our educational goals for our youngsters are in very capable and caring hands. Debbie Chessin's collaborations with parents and her fellow educators at BI (and elsewhere) remain in place. Strongly in place.

4. Our building is secure and maintained.

5. Our fiscal year ends on 6/30/20. We're 'in the Black'!!!

6. Our Ritual Leadership remains in place; our Shabbat Services provide a weekly opportunity for everything that can be offered in these times of uncertainty.

7. Our adult learning has centered on anti-semitism—a subject that will not go away; a virus for which no vaccine will ever be created in a lab. Thus, we stand together and learn together and grow stronger.

8. We WILL plan for a congregational social gathering (of some sort) this fall; maybe at the usual site in Avon.

9. This Bulletin is the final time you will see two members listed as part of our Executive Committee. Jill and Evan Fleisher have served with integrity, thoughtfulness, kindness, and compassion for many years. They will be greatly missed. Digital hugs to our gracious friends.

10. Our semi-annual Congregational meeting is Sunday, June 14. Please consider taking the time to view it on the Zoom link to be provided.

Leadership is an amazing opportunity. You get to look forward with eyes that somehow let you see what's behind you as well.

Best wishes for continued well being. Think good thoughts and make good choices. [My mother told me that as well.]

High Holy Days 2020An ad-hoc committee (Larry, Jay, Rabbi, Luis, Beryl, and me) has determined the following regarding High Holy Days 2020.

• The four main services (counting Yom Kippur as one day) will be Simulcast from the sanctuary. No choir. It's possible that Jay will provide some piano playing. A link will be provided for viewing of the services. Books will be handed out in September.

• On the Bima: Larry. Rabbi. Me.

• Torah reading by others—TBD.

• It will be a shorter service—that's easy to understand when you figure in the lack of Choir time. But, the service itself may be shorter as well. TBD.

• Those without an ability to Simulcast - no computer link, etc. We are working on this issue. We certainly may be able to have attendees sprinkled throughout the sanctuary. TBD.

• NOTE: As you all know, fund raising is a needed compliment to the HH Days. We love having everyone together; we sing and we pray and we read and we listen. But, the HH Days have also (historically) presented us with an opportunity to remind everyone that our budgetary needs remain constant, regardless of the time of the year.

I can only ask and ask and ask. If you are able, please consider continuing to make contributions to our General Fund, as well as our other funds. Please continue to pay your dues, on time and in full.

from Circle of Friends – BI-TWT's Rosh Chodesh Women's Group...

Virtual Zoom Potluck!

Circle of Friends normally ends our year with a potluck supper in someone’s home and we take the time to review the past year’s activities and come up with suggestions for the coming year. Well, in this very unusual time, we will have a Virtual-Zoom-Potluck. Instead of bringing a savory or sweet (or both) dish to share and to stimulate our appetites, I’m suggesting another kind of stimulation and inspiration.

Friends have told me about keeping a Corona-Virus folder, including a file of inspiring quotes or articles. I have long kept a folder of quotes, and I bet many of you have something similar. You may not have a file, but perhaps there is a quote or short passage from something you have read.

I’m proposing that we bring to our virtual potluck, a quote or short passage that is meaningful to you to share and inspire us. You can email them to me and I will assemble them to share with everyone. When we “gather” online you can read and tell us why that quote is meaningful to you. In this way we can continue to “nourish” each other.

Rabbi will host our Virtual-Zoom-Potluck Wednesday evening, June 3rd, at 7:30 p.m., and she will send out the link. You can send your quotes, or if you have suggestions for next year or any questions, please get in touch with me. [email protected], 216-973-2489 (cell) or 216-228-5246 (home).

It would be wonderful to be together and to “see” each other. Hope you can Zoom in!

Stay safe and stay well!

By The BookThis is a new feature designed by Temple President Peter Sackett. This month, the answers are from Temple Educator Debbie Chessin and Office Manager & Bulletin co-editor Pat Outlaw. Participants choose questions to answer from a fun list.

What books are on your nightstand?

PO: Open, Closed, Open, poems by Yehuda Amichai; Davening, A Guide to Meaningful Jewish Prayer by Rabbi Zalman Schacter-Shalomi; The Book of Letters by Rabbi Lawrence Kushner; Words Can Change Your Brain by Newberg & Waldman.DC: My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante.

Describe your ideal reading experience (when, where, what, format).

DC: Being able to enjoy a novel that I am reading for the first time as I sit outside enjoying the warmth of a summer day.

Which writers — novelists, playwrights, critics, journalists, poets — working today do you admire most?

PO: Anna Quindlen, Maria SempleDC: I am enjoying the Neapolitan Novels by Elena Ferrante.

Has a book ever brought you closer to another person, or come between you?

PO: Too bad you couldn’t have been following me and Someone Who Shall Be Nameless as we walked on Edgewater Beach with me explaining Betty Friedan’s The Feminine Mystique to Nameless and his patronizing poo-pooing, and my increasingly agitated and passionate defense of her premise, and his delight in how agitated I was. Just remembering it makes me grind my teeth in frustration.

What’s the most interesting thing you learned from a book recently?

DC: The Art of Gathering offers insight as to how and why we gather. It also provides structured ways we can all create more meaningful and interesting gatherings and meetings.

What moves you most in a work of literature?

DC: I enjoy reading a novel that explores deep and complex relationships between individuals. One that offers me insight into relationships in my own life.

How do you organize your books?

PO: By category. I have so many that it helps me find what I’m searching for.DC: In alphabetical order on my shelf.

Which genres do you especially enjoy reading? And which do you avoid?

PO: I am reading much more non-fiction these days covering a wide range of topics. I am reading one Jewish book after another. I also enjoy books about people who have formed a bond with a creature—a sparrow, an owl, an octopus. But I feel an urge to re-read some children’s literature—just for comfort. I avoid thrillers with women in peril.DC: Historical non-fiction novels. I also enjoy reading classic novels and poetry. I tend to not read fictional or non-fictional novels about war or crime.

What's your favorite book no one has heard of?

PO: Wife for Sale by Kathleen Norris, published in 1932. A romance written during the Depression.DC: The Art of Gathering by Priya Parker.

What do you do when a book is disappointing? Finish it or stop reading?

PO: Stop. Life is limited. As a wise man once said “If you don’t enjoy what you’re doing, why in the H___ are you doing it?”

Recommend one book!!!!

PO: Einstein and the Rabbi, Searching for the Soul by Rabbi Naomi LevyDC: My Brilliant Friend. by Elena Ferrante (see below)

My Brilliant Friend is a semi-autobiographical novel written by Elena Ferrante (a pseudonymous name for the Italian novelist). This novel is the first in a series called the Neapolitan Quartet. The four books chronicle the lives of two young Italian women who are growing up in an impoverished neighborhood in Naples, Italy, from the 1940s to 1970s.

The first of the four novels follows the deeply complicated friendship of two girls, Elena and Lila. Both young women are desperately trying to gain their independence and find a way to educate themselves during a time when women are marginalized and discouraged from pursuing an education or their own careers.

This book is a fascinating, poignant, and well-crafted story about an often complex relationship between two young women. It is one of the best stories that I have read recently, and it should be added to anyone’s book list this summer!

from the educator's desk...

June 2020As we head into summer, our lives will look a little different this year. For many of our children summer camp and sports have been cancelled, and family trips

may be postponed. Now more than ever is the time to use a little creativity and find ways to connect not only with family and friends, but our Judaism as well.

If you are looking for a bit of an escape from what is going on in the world, the following are some ways to embrace Judaism with your family at home this summer.

1. Visit Israel…virtually- The Facebook group “Virtual Israel” offers remote experiences with outstanding Israeli tour guides who can “take” you to a national park, walk you through the streets of Israel, and do a learning session on Israel-all from afar.

2. Observe Havdallah! Havdallah (Hebrew word for “division” or “separation”) marks the formal end of Shabbat, separating it from the beginning of the new week. Learn about the history and rituals of Havdallah, and then try it yourself.

3. Try a new “challah” recipe. Check out “All Things Challah”- for 14 delicious challah recipes. There are also helpful hints for baking, braiding and more!

4. Attend Shabbat services on-line. Even though Religious School is finished for the year, there are still opportunities during the summer to see your BI-TWT friends. There will be virtual Shabbat services on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings. We will also offer a virtual Tefillah one Sunday each month.

5. Do a mitzvah! In Pirkei Avot, the rabbis wrote, “Mitzvah goreret mitzvah”, one mitzvah

(commandment/good deed) leads to another. In a time when so many people are struggling, try to find ways to help another person in our community.

Important information for Summer Activities:

We have not yet made any final determinations about Camp Kee Tov. It is currently scheduled to run from Monday, August 3 - Friday August 7. Our final decision will be based on the most current state and federal guidelines, and the availability of parks and other venues.

Debbie Chessin**This position is partially funded through the Fund for the Jewish Future of the Jewish Education Center of Cleveland.
