David is a multi award winning chartered architect with 25 years experience in the
commercial, industrial and technical real estate sector.
David qualified with honours from Birmingham School of Architecture in 1992.
Joining Robert Seager Associates – a noted Birmingham Practice on graduation, David rapidly built a
reputation for innovative design. Moving to Webb Gray in 1994 to develop his career further, David guided
this 100 year old practice into the 21st century and by 2002 was Managing Director & owner. Under David’s
leadership, Webb Gray became the most prestigious industrial & commercial architects practice in
Birmingham working on projects such as; Brighton Marina, Poundland HQ, Severn Trent HQ, Calthorpe

Neil Ferguson BA (Hons) Arch ACIAT
Following graduation in 1994, Neil began his architectural career working for a
number of small practices in the midlands gaining valuable experience in a broad
range of building sectors, including residential, commercial, leisure, retail and
healthcare.
Neil joined Mason Richards Partnership in 2000 working within the Commercial
Department as a job runner. Initially working in the ASDA Section under a partnering agreement, and was
responsible for the delivery of new build, extension and
commercial fit-out projects. He was involved in over 50 projects spanning an 8 year period.
Neil rapidly progressed through the ranks of Mason Richards Partnership (RPS Planning and
Development from 2004) and was subsequently promoted to Associate and Senior Associate Levels.
The introduction into Data Centre design began in 2006 whilst working for RPS Planning & Development
and through the Fire Control Centre Project in Wolverhampton. This was a £14m pound new build project
incorporating an Emergency Call Centre, Data Centre, Disaster Recovery and Office Suites all with TIA Tier
3 & 4 (equivalent) levels of resilience. Involved from initial planning up to p.c, was initially employed by
Broadlands Developments and then novated over to the D&B contractor Bowmer & Kirkland, the job was
successfully handed over within budget and on time in Dec 2007.
In Sept 2008, Neil joined BHP Design as a Senior Associate to pursue the Commercial, and in particular, the
Data Centre opportunities the practice had to offer. Since 2008, he has been responsible as lead designer
on a number of both completed and ongoing Data Centre projects.
Nick Smith MBIAT Nick studied at Birmingham Polytechnic at the School of Architecture and was
sponsored by Birmingham’s Local Authority, The City Architects Department. Starting
his career on public buildings, urban design and educational projects, he was quickly
snapped up by Special Projects culminating in his inclusion in the National Stadium
Bid Team.
Nick moved on to work in both Goslar, Germany & Cork, Ireland where his growing experience was
essential in delivering pharmaceutical headquarters in both Singapore and Kent, England for Pfizer.
Having worked in both small practice and large multi-disciplinary organisations, from renowned Associated
Architects (The Birmingham Hippodrome Theatre) to AMEC (Pfizer) including high profile practices such as
Nicol Thomas Architects, his rising reputation enabled him to set up a small practice of his own called
Cadworks. This enabled Nick to add to & spread his wealth of experience across a variety of practices and
projects.
In 2005, Nick founded Zebra Architects in Worcester, along with his business partner and growing staff
resource. This RIBA practice specialised in high end designs across a wide range of project types. This
included an exciting development for Aston Martin.
In 2011 Nick was invited to join BHP Design at Director Level and was able to bring his high end design
capability to an already vastly experienced Data Centre Design Team. Nick continues to be involved in
the design of a number of challenging Data Centre Schemes from London to Oman and is relishing the
opportunity to develop schemes across the UK, Scandinavia and Europe wide.

BHP Design have been working with Interxion for the last 5
years providing single point responsibility delivery of their
UK expansion on the Truman Brewery complex.
Although ideally located for proximity to the city, these projects
were extremely difficult due to location (conservation area),
a difficult landlord and a negative uninformed planning authority
complicated these intense projects. However BHP Design have
delivered eight separate planning approvals on this difficult
(highly restrictive) site, allowing the total regeneration of a valuable
historic site. An existing NDA prevents us disclosing much detail,
however over 8000 sq.m of Tier III technical space has been approved.
In 2012 BHP Design (UK) were approached by a major Norwegian developer and International Contractor
to assist in the roll out of their data centre operations across Norway, Sweden and The Netherlands.
Subject to a Non-Disclosure Agreement we are limited in our ability to divulge locations and detail. However,
we are currently engaged in several alternative operating models for this Client.
Discussions are being held with EVRY in respect of the sensitive
Norwegian Government requirements.

Many of our projects over the past years have been refurbishment
of existing commercial / industrial properties – in many instances this
gives the operator a faster route to market, both in construction terms
and with feasibility, in many cases it is easier to sell a building than
a proposal off plan. The images on this page represent some of the
existing buildings that have been converted / refurbished to data centres
by BHP Design.
BHP Design has recently designed a new data
centre in Sweden which is situated in Upplands
Väsby - located between Stockholm City and the
large international airport, Arlanda.
Recently receiving a planning approval, this
facility will provide more than 6,000m² of data
centre technical space and is constructed of a
heavy concrete frame arranged over three levels
with all the necessary data centre facilities,
including:
Conditioned modules at ground and third floor
levels
Air to Air cooling
Hypoxic Air Fire Prevention
Infrastructure service areas
Offices
Disaster recovery areas
Conference facilities
