    appeared- I recited it to a charmin# maiden- &ho- &ithout an+ si#n of mental effort- immediatel+ su##esteda chan#e that &as so ine$ita/le- and so #reat an impro$ement- that I ha$e to #et the poem into print a#ain in

    order to mae that chan#e.

    Ten +ears ha$e passed since I &rote the poem and- of course- the impression of incredi/le a#e&hich I lea$e amon# those &ho no& me onl+ from m+ &ritin#s is no& e$en stron#er. When this poem

    &as &ritten- I had pu/lished a mere 66 /oos- and no&- ten +ears later- the score stands at 1'B- so that its

    /een a decade of constant mental confla#ration.

    I no&- said (o#ert. (ut once that /rain &as put in char#e of the ph+sical apparatus of thero/ot- it &as necessaril+ modified- of course.

    Of course- a#reed (o#ert unhelpfull+. (ut unpredicta/l+ and frustratin#l+. The trou/le is that

    precisel+ under pressure that Susan ne$er craced. The tar#et that adarian made could /e a neatl+

    ser$e as the /asis of a mo$ie. I didnt &ant to- /ecause I dont lie to #et tan#led up &ith the $isual media
