n Overnight Camp: Most offer a variety of programs for children starting at age 7. Overnight camp options include coed, single sex and specialty camps that focus on a particular program and have varying overnight accommodations, such as cabins, tents and tepees.

n Day Camp: Similar to overnight camps, these camps take younger children, starting at age 4, and everyone returns home at the end of the day.

A Camp for EveryoneThere are camps to meet every interest, price range and

schedule. Knowing your options, as well as your child’s personality, will help you identify the best programs for your child. The following information will help you as you start your search.

Research tools to help with your camp searchn Go to a camp expo. You’ll find lots of camp information under one roof. You can talk with representatives of the camps you’re interested in and gather brochures. (Atlanta Parent’s camp expos are Jan. 25 at North Point Mall, Feb. 22 at Town Center Mall and March 22 at Perimeter Mall (all expos are from 11 a.m.-4 p.m.)

n Research online. Most camps have extensive information and photos to give you a picture of what camp life is like.

n Ask your family, friends and neighbors. Many of them were campers themselves or can tell you about their child’s experience at camp.

n Specialty Camps and Programs: Campers can embark on adventures as varied as learning how to ride a horse, water ski or dance. If your child has a special interest, there likely is a camp that specializes in it.

n Special Needs Campers: A physical, medical or mental disability is not a roadblock to a camp experience. Each year more than 1 million special needs children benefit from summer camp. Some camps specialize in serving certain groups while other camps integrate special-needs campers into the total camp population.

n Session Lengths Vary: Children may stay at camp for a few days, a few weeks or the entire summer. At camp, there’s a session length for every child, budget and schedule.

n Cost: Camp remains a very affordable option for most everyone. Fees can range from $15 to $120 per day, depending upon the choice of camp, the facilities offered and the camper’s needs. Many camps and other organizations offer financial assistance based on need.

For overnight campsn Visit the finalists. If you’re unsure which camp is best, take your child and go for a tour. Some camps have open houses, and you’ll get a good sense of how your kid will spend his week or weeks at camp. Consider starting your search a year in advance and visiting a summer camp in progress to see what goes on.

n Get the names of former campers. Camps you’re interested in should be able to help you contact former campers who can tell you what your child can expect.

Choosing the Best Overnight CampYour child is your best source of

information when selecting a summer camp. With a variety of programs and activities available, summer camp offers adventures to match a child’s interests and maturity level. So it’s important to consider her personality and identify the camp programs that will benefit her most.

The best way to make the perfect match is to include your child in the decision-making process. Together, you should explore the camp options and examine the materials the camps provide. In addition, many camps have websites that include photos, maps or virtual tours of the camp facility, sample daily schedules and menus, and information about the directors and key staff. As children become better acquainted with the camp experience and more involved in the decision-making process, they will have less anxiety about going away to camp.

What locale do I want (for example, mountains, oceanfront, close to home)?

Do I want a traditional camp that gives my child a wide variety of experiences or do I want to select a specialty camp that focuses on a particular activity or set of skills?

Will my child feel more comfortable in a large or small camp?

How rustic do I want the camp to be?

How structured do I want the program to be? Does my child like to have lots of choice in the activity schedule?

Is my child ready to be away from home for an extended stay? This will help you to select either an overnight or day camp setting.

What session length is best for my child and our family plans for the summer?

How can I stay in touch with my child during camp? Does the camp allow mail, phone calls or e-mail? Does the camp have parent visitation days?

How will the camp meet my child’s special dietary or physical needs?

What is my budget for camp tuition? Remember, some camps offer financial aid.

There are more than 12,000 camps in the U.S. with 7,000 overnight and 5,000 day camps.

9,500 of those camps are nonprofit associated with religious organizations and children’s’ programs. The other 2500 are privately owned for profit camps.

11 million children and adults attend camp each year.

Camps employ more than 1,500,000 adults each year to work in a variety of positions. 20% of those workers are from other countries.

Camps report they have at least 75% of staff return each year.

The Bedford School/Squirrel Hollow Camp

Squirrel Hollow Camp is a 4-week summer program,

June 16-July 10, for children who need an academic boost.

The program is held on the wooded 45 acre campus of The Bedford School in Fairburn, approximately 15 miles south of the Atlanta Airport.

Students receive academic tutoring in small groups in the areas of math, reading and written expression.

Multisensory materials and techniques are used and individualized for each student. Parents receive a detailed report and recommendations at the end of camp. Students also participate in recreational activities on the Challenge Course, the soccer field, the gym and the outdoor pool.

Students gain academic skills as well as gains in self-esteem, confidence and social skills. The program is open to students currently in K-8th grade.

The Dunwoody Nature Center recognizes the importance of science

Georgia, High Meadows Camp offers a structured outdoor recreational program focusing on personal responsibility and environmental respect. In a relaxed, caring, and non-competitive atmosphere, each camper is encouraged to engage in new experiences and build relationships.

Each day, High Meadows Camp welcomes 300 children, from age four to 14, to participate in a traditional camp experience. Pace Summer Programs

Pace Summer Programs offers 7 weeks of camps during the

months of June and July. We have day camps for 3.5 year olds through 12th grade. Paceketeers, a day camp for preschool campers, is one of the only programs of its type in the Atlanta area. Campers participate in arts and crafts,creative play, tumbling, American Red Cross swim lessons under the supervision of an experienced and highly trained staff.

Pace Camp offers exciting opportunities for rising K-5th grade campers. Olivia’s Dollhouse Tea Room is a fairytale dollhouse that specializes in private

dress up tea parties and making all of your princess’s dreams come true. Nationally known and recognized for their “royal treatment” dress up tea parties, Olivia’s in Johns Creek is now offering princesses their fairytale every day of the week during upcoming school breaks.

Princess Charm School (for boys and girls ages 5-12) is a half-day camp that runs Monday through Friday, from 9AM until 1PM during Spring and Summer Break. Filled with fun and fabulous girlie activities including dress-up, makeovers, and pamper sessions, as well as dance, music, role-playing and crafts. Porter Academy Summer Camp

While summer vacation carries happy memories of family,

friends, and the great outdoors, it also has a downside. Many students suffer significant academic loss over the summer, and this loss seems to be exaggerated for children with learning differences. Porter Academy’s goal is to help children maintain academic levels within a fun, relaxed atmosphere. Each of the five weeks has a different theme: Animal Planet, Time Travelers, Winter Wonderland, American Fiestas, and Detective Days. Academics are interwoven into fun activities throughout each day as well as directly taught in small groups. This balance of fun and academics allows campers to relax and enjoy their summer while having academic skills reinforced.

Campers participate in PE, Occupational Therapy, Music Therapy, games, arts & crafts, and hands-on-learning activities as well as in-house fieldtrips including the Art Barn and Nana Nature. Porter Academy creates a fun and fulfilling summer program that keeps students engaged and learning throughout the summer, thereby linking their academic success from year to year.

Children of all ages are on a journey of discovery every day when they take on the program challenges and field

trip adventures planned by the staff at Robotic Explorers in Roswell. Each of this non-profit education organization’s six weeks of camp offers a different assortment of LEGO building and programming challenges. Campers as young as 6 and as practiced as 17 can find the right amount of new missions to explore and new challenges to conquer. Both full-day and half-day camps are offered in both June and July. Lunch is included for full-day campers with a broad menu selection from which parents and campers can choose. Camp begins at 8:00 am and ends at 5:00 pm. Early drop-off and late-pick up service is available.

Machine campers aged 6 to 8 learn to design elaborate LEGO models and machines and create computer programs using LEGO WeDo and its icon-based elementary programming language. LEGO Mindstorms campers become mission strategists to match a different challenge each week. They solve problems using a robot equipped with sensors to help their programmed solutions hit the mark. Older campers learn to write computer

programs in JAVA and design robots for a multi-bot competition. They explore professional connections while meeting each week’s expert guests. Camp challenges and full-day field trips are inspired by each week’s theme: June 9-13 “Giants of the Sea”, June 16-20 “Siege!”, June 23-27 “Jurassic Jungle”, July

Sandy Springs UMC’s All Star Day Camp

Sandy Springs UMC’s All Star Day Camp offers summer fun of all sorts to campers

ages 4-12 throughout the summer. Campers explore themes such as “Fun with Food”, “Sportsapalooza”, “Wild Kingdom”, and “Up in the Air” through games and sports, art, creative play, science experiments, exploring nature, and more under the caring and enthusiastic guidance of our summer staff.

All Star Day Camp is held at the Sandy Springs UMC Activities Center. This location allows campers to enjoy the beautiful gym, classrooms, playground, and fields of the Activities Center and provides easy access to field trips around Atlanta.

The Sandy Springs UMC Activities Center also hosts Club Scientific, Engineering 4 kids, Nike Elite Hoops, and The Skill Factory camps in conjunction with All Star Day Camp, providing an opportunity for campers to dig deeper into sciences or hone athletic skills.
