Introduction

Jamnagar, the Land of Birds, is well known for its abundance ofbio-diversity. This district of Gujarat is the richest in marine andavian fauna. It is indeed a signif icant mark on the global birdingmap.

Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary is situated at 22º 30’ 50.88”N latitudesand 70º 09’ 14.64”E longitudes, which is 15 km away fromJamnagar, Gujarat-INDIA. Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary is spreadover an area of 604.86 hectors. Out of this, the first 182.90hectors have been declared as a Sanctuary under the WildlifeProtection Act, 1972 vide Government of Gujarat, Forest andEnvironment Department on 27 th May, 1982 and remaining421.96 hectors were included on 6 th November, 1982. Formerly, this area was the seacoast and marshy revenue wasteland ofthe villages Khijadiya, Jambuda and Dhunvav of Jamnagardistrict. Before Independence, reclamation bunds were built toprevent salinity ingress and storing the water of the riversRuparel and Kalindri by His Highness Maharaja, the JamsahebShri Ranjitsinhji of Nawanagar State in 1920. It was renovatedby Government of Gujarat in 1956. The Ministry of Environmentand Forest, Government of India has recognized Khijadiya BirdSanctuary as one of the important National Level Wetlandsunder “NATIONAL WETLAND CONSERVATION PROGRAMME”,due to both - the fresh and marine water eco-system existing atone place. Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary is listed among theImportant Bird Areas of India with IBA code: IN-GJ-07. Thissanctuary needs to be classif ied as per International Conventionof RAMSAR as a “CLASS – A” type Wetland Sanctuary.

Although the area of Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary is relatively small, but it has an amazing variety of habitats like, rivers, fresh water, brackish water, saline water, tidal mudflats, mangroves, grassland, scrubland and agricultural land. These numerousmicro and macro habitats form a unique eco-system. Thetemperature varies from 7º C in winter to 42º C in summer andaverage rainfall is about 555 mm.

Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary is a paradise for waterfowls, waders andterrestrial birds. More than 300 species of birds have beenrecorded in and around the Sanctuary and among them nearly200 species are seen regularly during the year. In addition tobeing a wonderful Avifauna habitat, it is also a home to otherfauna like mammals (Blue-bulls, Jackals, Jungle cats,) Reptiles(Snakes, Monitor Lizards), invertebrates (Butterf lies, Insects)amidst some signif icant f lora.

This habitat provides an excellent breeding ground for migratorybirds like Great Crested Grebe, Glossy Ibis and globallythreatened species (as per Bird Life International), like Black-necked Storks, Painted Storks, Darters, Black-headed Ibis,Eurasian Spoonbills etc. Geographically, Khijadiya Bird Sanctuaryis an important location on the migratory routes covering North toSouth Asia along the Western Flyway and the West Coast of Indiaadjoining the Gulf of Kutch. Some of the characteristic specieslike Dalmatian Pelicans, Pallid Harriers, Greater Spotted Eaglesetc. stay here for the whole winter making it a remarkablewintering ground and some species like European Rollers,Spotted Flycatchers etc. make it a passage before migratingSouthwards.

The legendry Indian Ornithologist Dr. Salim Ali visited theSanctuary in 1984 and he proclaimed, “Khijadiya Bird Sanctuaryis such an amazing Treasure of Birds.”

Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary is divided in two sections - a) Dhuvavand b) Jambuda. There are three watchtowers in both thesesections which provide an excellent vantage point forbirdwatchers during the nature trials. Every winter, a NatureEducation Camp is organized by Marine Forest Department-Jamnagar for school & college students. I would really like toappreciate Marine Forest Department, Jamnagar for their effortsin conserving Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary.
