Bugle Online

Welcome to the online August edition of the Black Mount Bugle. Thank you to all the people who have contributed to this edition. We would love to hear from you and welcome new contributors as well as regulars. The deadline for contributions to the November 2017 edition of the Bugle is 15th October 2017.

Note from the Editor

You will have noticed that your regular printed Bugle is much reduced this month. This is quite simply due to a current lack of funds available to the Community Council for this purpose. We are looking at ways to remedy this and would welcome any suggestions. We will continue however to post all the information we can online and hopefully this will suffice until we can resume normal service. My apologies for any disappointment.

We Need Your Help

Join your Community Council and make a Difference

The Community Council meets every month or so for about an hour on a Monday evening. As I always mention – everyone is welcome. This is your Community Council not ours, and as legislation changes it is increasingly important that the area has a strong, vocal and active Community Council.

However, there have been a couple of changes over the last year and we are currently working with the minimum number we need to make it work. Though thanks to the efforts of my colleagues we have hopefully maintained our effectiveness.

But the BMCC is now vulnerable for the future. In other words, it will not continue for long if we cannot grow our numbers. So, we are looking for new candidates. People in the area who would be willing to join a small friendly group trying to make a bit of a difference. With more members we can better represent the whole area, access more expertise, and share any tasks that arise. When I mention this in conversation to people I can sense their unease that it might be too formal or too onerous. Neither is the case.

Please do contact myself or any of the Community Council members and we’d be very happy to tell you more – and invite you in.

Sam Cassels

Note from our Councillor

It seems a long time ago but it was only three months ago that we had the council elections, this resulted in complete change for the Blackmount area with three new councillors elected. The new councillors are: Myself Alex Allison, Eric Holford, and Ian

McCallan, all have strong links with this area and I’m sure will work together for the betterment of Clydesdale East. The election also brought change to the council, with no party having overall control and parties unable to come to any agreements regarding forming a majority administration, it is a minority SNP administration that will run the council. This will mean that they will need to get the support of a number of opposition councillors to get their policies implemented, I would hope that this would lead parties to work together for the benefit of the area.

With almost half the councillors being newly elected the first two months have been spent on training and getting organised, allocation on committees and different roles being identified. If you would like more detail on these roles they can be found on the council website. All this withstanding, many issues still need to be dealt with, speeding is a common problem raised and

discussions between the three local councillors and the police have taken place. There are also a number of roadworks taking place this summer with the largest being in Carnwath when the high street will be closed for three weeks for major improvement works in September. The diversion is a long one for HGV’s, being through Biggar to Abington and back up to Hyndford bridge, this is necessary due to low bridges. It is work that is required to be done and I hope we can work around the inconvenience to let it progress.

Continued overleaf…

Note from our Councillor

When we return after the recess on the 8th August we will be into a full rota of meetings, and as we enter the Autumn will start to discuss the 2018-2019 budget. The chief executive has indicated that this will be the most difficult to balance yet and we will need to think most carefully where we are going to

prioritise our spending as funds are set to be cut. Councillors are currently deciding what surgeries they will be running and they are due to be started when the schools go back later in August, for details please look on the council website.

I look forward to working with everyone in the next five years and tackling the issues that concern residents in Blackmount. I would like to finish by thanking the three retiring councillors for all their work while in office.

Cllr Alex Allison

Annual Wreath Laying Ceremony

You are invited to attend the Wreath Laying Memorial service at the Elsrickle SMALL memorial on Saturday 11th November 2017 at 11:00 a.m.

Those attending should assemble outside “Townhead Cottage” by 10:55 a.m.

After the brief but nonetheless meaningful service, coffee/tea will be served.

Once again, Police Scotland has been requested to attend and provide protection during the ceremony.

Despite the community Council declining to support my submission to apply for a grant from a National £1 million Millennium budget to improve access and egress, facilitating the safe access whilst laying of the wreath. These changes have been undertaken by generous contributions from local persons, and it is hoped that concrete bollards donated by a National Company, as a good will gesture will be in place soon to provide protection to the memorial once South Lanarkshire Council has granted approval.

Neidpath Castle Hosts Wayside Market

On Saturday, August 19th, the annual Wayside Market, for Lyne & Manor Church, takes place in the grounds of Neidpath Castle, by invitation of David and Lady Benson. Neidpath Castle has not been open regularly to the public for some years but anyone attending the Wayside Market, will have the opportunity to go round the castle. The castle will also host an exhibition with information about the life and history Manor Valley. The Market will be opened at 2.00 p.m. A Wayside Market is a very traditional community event with stalls offering the famed baking by the ladies of Manor and fresh produce and plants from the Manor gardens as well as bric-a-brac, books, and toys. Literally hundreds of scones have been baked, together with pots of new made jam for the cream teas - always the great attraction. There are games and competitions, a puppet show and pony rides, which will make a good day out for the family. Entertainments include live music, always guaranteed to provide

a cheerful party atmosphere. Organisers hope for a lovely sunny day, so visitors can enjoy the fine surroundings but, ‘just in case’, most of the attractions will be tented, so protected from the elements. The Wemyss family do not reside in the castle, but have maintained it and improved it where possible to this day and we are most grateful for their offer to host the Wayside Market.

Neidpath Castle Hosts Wayside Market

Visitors to Neidpath are unlikely to meet the ghost but will be able to see the magnificent vaulted basement and hall, hung with the spectacular Neidpath batiques. From the gloomy pit prison to the airy battlements, the castle itself tells a story of seven centuries and this is a rare opportunity to explore the

building and its history. There is a small car park at the castle but plenty of parking in the main car park in Neidpath Road from where there will be a shuttle to take visitors to the castle (and back).
