It has been another stay-at-home summer for us, but we have had several opportunities for visits with family and friends which has helped keep our spirits up --- but we really miss seeing our many dancing friends. Thus far our only away booking is the 2022 National Square Dance Convention in New Brunswick next July. We had hoped that by this time we could see a clear path back to in-person dancing in the early fall, but, as of this writing, Ontario is paused in Step 3 and officials are indicating that we may have to retreat further. With the onset of a Delta driven 4 th wave and the return to school of students, we are once again into a “critical” period. Once again we have to try to remain optimistic that “the final mile” has an end. As well, we have to hope that the end includes conditions and government guidelines that will allow clubs and individual dancers to feel comfortable returning to in-person dancing. We shall continue to monitor the situation closely. Luckily, if you are like us, the summer heat waves alternating with excessive rains have left you with more than a few unfinished outdoor jobs to fill much of your time in the immediate future. We are hoping that fine fall weather will come our way to compensate for the lack of in-person dancing opportunities. We are also fortunate that Jeff and Andrea Priest are continuing to offer Zoom square and round dancing opportunities this fall (see their Shadow Light Dance Club article in this issue for details). On the more social side, Thames Valley Dance Club continues to hold their “Trivia Nights” the 4 th Monday each month at 7:00PM. They are a very welcoming group and you can join in by emailing Doug & Lois Turvey at [email protected] to be added to their invitation list. September 2021 Volume 60 Number 1 President's Message

Hello again fellow dancers,

We hope that all of you have had a healthy and happy summer enjoying our great outdoors.

With the onset of a Delta driven 4th wave and the return to school of students, we are once again into a “critical” period.

On the more social side, Thames Valley Dance Club continues to hold their “Trivia Nights” the 4th Monday each month at 7:00PM. They are a very welcoming group and you can join in by emailing Doug & Lois Turvey at [email protected] to be added to their invitation list.

Now that we have reached the unofficial end of summer, start to think about reconnecting with your dancing friends through Zoom opportunities or a simple phone call to keep in touch and catch up.

Stay safe and positive!

Probably a sign to come for the next little while

While we will probably continue to see the above sign for some time yet, there are still ways to stay involved. Your Clubs may not be dancing, but your fellow dancers are still around. Why not give them a call? See what they have been up to. Get the latest gossip! A quick phone call can make someone’s day. Go ahead – Reach out and touch someone!

Awards News and Reminder The Ontario Federation Trillium Awards for Merit and Long Service are awarded in August each year. The Merit award requires at least 5 years of dance, and recognizes those who have made an outstanding contribution beyond the scope of their normal regular activities at the club and regional levels. The Long Service award additionally requires 25 years of involvement. SWOSDA is allowed to submit two nominations each year. Nominations must be received by the SWOSDA Secretary by January 15th. For detailed guidelines and forms visit SWOSDA.ca, click “About” and scroll down to “Awards”. All enquiries and submissions to [email protected] .

Important Insurance Reminders Liability insurance for clubs, dancers, callers/cuers runs from January to January. All those currently insured will continue to be insured in the New Year (2022) courtesy of Canadian Square & Round Dance Society until clubs open again and are able to collect membership insurance fees. Our dancing liability insurance does not cover any Covid 19 related issues (e.g. claim against an insured because someone contracts Covid at a dance event; claim for costs associated with closing a venue due to an outbreak traced to a dance activity.) All the ramifications of this aren’t known, but when clubs prepare to re-open, they should take care to ensure a mutual understanding with venues regarding Covid 19 related issues.

Ideas for Keeping in Contact with Your Club Members and Fellow Dancers

o Use your club emergency contact tree to touch base with your members early in September o If you haven’t already, consider emailing your dancers the members contact list in order that they

can connect with other members o Email your members and invite them to join a Zoom session (40 minutes free!) for part of what

would have been your first dance of the season (and/or for other regular dance nights) o Encourage your members to pursue virtual square/round dance opportunities via Zoom & You Tube,

and to share their experiences o Share humour items from the internet submitted by your members

SWOSDA Executive News September 2021

SWOSDA Dance Cancellations! Because of the safety issues associated with the current and projected COVID situation this fall, the executive has decided to cancel our scheduled Oct. 23rd and Nov. 27th SWOSDA in-person regional dances.

Executive Change After many years of SWOSDA leadership as Secretary and recently as 1st Vice Presidents, Linda and Tom Charlton have decided, after much reflection, that they need a break from executive duties. We have accepted their resignation with understanding and regret. Linda and Tom have provided exceptional leadership on the executive as well as in the promotion of square dancing throughout South Western Ontario. They received a Trillium Merit Award in 2011 in recognition of their outstanding leadership, and we were going to nominate them for a Trillium Long Service Award, until we found out that you can only receive one Trillium Award. The executive will miss their leadership, but look forward to continued opportunities to dance to Tom’s calling and to welcome Linda into our squares. Jo and Tom Kahnert have moved to 1st Vice President, and the 2nd Vice President position is currently unfilled.

Dancer & Club Insurance Because the current situation makes collecting liability insurance money for clubs, dancers, callers/cuers impractical, the Canadian Square & Round Dance Society will again secure continued insurance into 2022 until clubs are open again and able to collect and submit membership insurance fees and updated member lists. (Remember the insurance does not cover any Covid 19 related issues (e.g. claim against an insured because someone contracts Covid at a dance event; claim for costs associated with closing a venue due to an outbreak traced to a dance activity.)

Club Contacts We welcome our continuing and new club contacts to another dance year. SWOSDA relies on our club contacts to forward our information to their members. We also rely on them for making sure their clubs’ information on our website is always up-to-date. Please make sure any changes in club and club contact information are sent to [email protected] & [email protected].

Know Someone Who Deserves An Award?

SWOSDA Executive accepts nominations each year for SWOSDA Merit Recognition Awards, for club level contributions to dancing, and provincial Trillium Awards (Merit & Long Service) for club and regional contributions to dancing. Nominations are due early in 2022; so if clubs or individuals have deserving candidates they wish to nominate, it’s a good idea to get started in the fall.

SWOSDA Remember When...

Looking Back through the Bugles – 2021 – 09

Sept ‘71 Two new committees were formed by SWOSDA: 1. Chair Cecil Downham to look after the financial aspects of SWOSDA and 2 Chair Roy Hull to deal with all aspects of the Bugle assisted by new Bugle Editors Lloyd and Florence Clayton. These committees would take some of the weight off the shoulders of the executive. It was reported that after six years Galt Swinging Eights had grown to one of the largest clubs in SWOSDA with a membership of around 90 couples under the leadership of Harold Clark.

Harold Clark was chosen as the new head of Callers Clinic. First SWOSDA dance of the season was at Simcoe with guest caller Jim McQuade. Sept 20-26 was celebrated as Square Dance Week.

Sept. ‘81 Ruth & Stan Melling presented a two-page report on the special dance held by the Princess Elizabeth Square Dance Club with the help of Callers Clinic to honour Square Dance Caller Perry Stuart. Perry had been working for 25 years with the PUC, Board of Education, & Princess Elizabeth PS to introduce a myriad of square dancers to our activity. Perry’s forte throughout his career was his ability to not only make new dancers feel at ease but also keep more experienced dancers on their toes. The committee were so successful the dance was a complete surprise for Perry & Mary on their arrival for what they thought was a regular club dance - there was no room in the parking lot, no room on the dance floor and no room at the microphone for the man who had called for so many years for so many people. The club publicity account also included an account with even more details of the event. Sept. ‘91 Founder and Past-President of SWOSDA Kay Sehl had passed away on April 7 1991. While Eric & Mary Steward were travelling in the USA, they were involved in a traffic accident, resulting in Eric’s death. Mary had become Historian in Mar. 82. Chair couple Doug & Chris Beatty advertised the 8th National Square and Round Dance Convention coming up in July 1992. They had organized the one in 1984 and claimed five and a half thousand happy dancers had giggled and jiggled in Winnipeg then.

Sept ‘01 Dan & Rhetha Roy & Geoff & Rosemarie Edwards travelled to Sarnia to visit Mary Steward to collect the various materials that Mary had gathered together as SWOSDA Historian. Geoff and Rosemarie had now agreed to take over the position and continue the monthly article in the Bugle.

Sept. ‘11 Andrea reported on the Callers School which Jeff Priest had hosted in Cambridge in July. It had been attended by 7 students of varying levels, some brand new, some experienced wanting to take their calling to a new level. The students had three busy days of seminars, workshops and calling practice. They all survived the

Page 5: BUGLE - swosda.ca

intense experience, which at times can seem intimidating and overwhelming. They all had the chance to call at the Saturday evening dance.

(I can attest to the intensity of the experience and also to the competence shown by the leaders as I accompanied Nick several times when he participated in a couple of caller schools. IF you are at all interested in learning to call, talk to Jeff. DD)

Carol Down, the Historian, flashbacked to the Forest City Festival, the united effort of the London Square Dance Clubs from 1964-2006. The program offered all square and round dancers plenty to look forward to. For a time, a Friday evening dance was added to the program with a fashion show also added to the program. (A mini convention right on our doorstep. We enjoyed participating several times.) CAN YOU HELP? Noticing that the History of SWOSDA online faded out about 2004 during the pandemic I began scouting the albums and Bugles to collect information to continue the history but found the albums were a bit scant. So we can maintain the ongoing history of SWOSDA and its member clubs , please, submit any accounts of special events, along with photographs, newspaper clippings etc., to me, Dorothy Dahm at 38 Kamps Crescent, Tillsonburg N4G 4Z3, or by email to either [email protected] or [email protected] I also welcome suggestions of items that should definitely be included in the history. I have a portable scanner so if you would rather arrange to meet up with me somewhere convenient, I can quickly scan your photos onsite and you wouldn’t need to let them out of your sight. I’m feeling much better than a year ago, and much more mobile. I’m hoping at the very least to be able to attend dances when they start and visit with my dancing friends, and maybe try a dance or two. We’ll see. In any case I’m hoping to see you on or by a dance floor sometime in the near future. I’ve missed you folks! Dorothy Dahm. SWOSDA Historian

Post Covid “Picking up the Pieces” Missing dancing? Were you, for reasons unknown to others, unable to participate in “Zoom” dances? How are you feeling about getting back to dancing? You may feel overwhelmed and suffer emotional and perhaps even physical complications due to not having danced since this pandemic began. You may be asking yourself questions like “Why can’t things go back to the way they were?” or “Will I remember how to dance?” or “Am I alone thinking that I am the only one left behind?” Will my friends still be there? Should I just “forget it” and move on? You are not unique in your thinking. All the emotions and uncertainties you are experiencing are universal among dancers uncertain about their own future in dance. First, we must know and understand that we are all in this together. Now, it’s time to “pick up the pieces” and move forward. Immediately after this crisis began, we not only missed our routine of going dancing, but the physiological knowledge that the dance hall was empty; an eerier silence. No caller or cuer providing direction, no music. Empty streets. Being told to “stay home”. Think of it this way. Is this the end of the world? Are we not empowering a sense of togetherness, even though we are apart? Is this not an act of dancer solidarity? As we hold on tight to our memories of friends and of what dancing has done for us, we must continue to thrive as a part of that solidarity remaining vigilant and optimistic that it won’t be long now. Soon we will be together again and the new normal will emerge springing forth with even more wonderful memories yet to be enjoyed. You have made the connections. You are not going to “unmake” them. Your friends are still out there waiting, like you, to resume the activity we all enjoy. Winston Churchill said “Success is not final, failure is not fatal, it is the courage to continue that counts” During the pandemic “zoom” dancing has become indispensable and has been key to keeping dancing alive. It has provided a common ground for all dancers, from all geographical and socio-economic backgrounds to interact and keep our activity alive. Just because you have not been involved, doesn’t mean you were not thought of and missed. The future of zoom dancing will remain as an alternative to in-person dancing and provide additional opportunities for people to dance, but our own clubs, our own friends, the social gatherings, the laughter, and the interaction with others that we all have experienced in the past and miss must be revived. Every effort must be made to get our clubs up and running again and every dancer out there must play a pivotal role in it’s success. This means you. Oprah Winfrey once said “It doesn’t matter who you are or where you come from. The ability to triumph begins with you.” Lets pick up the pieces …. Austin Hayward Thames Valley Dance Club

Clinton Wheel 'N' Dealers One of the highlights of the summer was the annual Garden Gathering for the Clinton Wheel n Dealer club members. It was held at the farm of Marris and Tina Bos on July 14th. The evening was lovely with another incredible sunset. Everyone enjoyed a walk through the gardens and socializing safely with all our dancing friends. It was so nice to catch up with everyone. We were so happy to visit with Frank Dolmage who is recovering from heart surgery and also Tina who had surgery earlier in the summer. Both were doing extremely well. Mary and Paul Eisler left the following week for a month out west with both of their children and their grandchildren. Some others have been enjoying camping trips and long awaited visits with family and friends. Ian and Debbie are travelling north of Gananoque for two weeks camping at Lake Charleston. We patiently await word of when our dancing may resume. Meanwhile, we wish everyone a happy and healthy autumn.

Denim'N Lace - Flesherton Are we there yet? It’s been a long time since we’ve danced as a Club – back March 2020. But we’ve come a long way; there is a glimmer of hope we’ll be back dancing later this fall – or at least by January 2022. Meanwhile, our members have had a busy summer, some have traveled within Canada, or sailed on the local waters, the farmers have had busy months with the unpredictable weather and the gardeners have enjoyed their flowerbeds and bountiful vegetable gardens and are now filling their freezers for the winter. One of our members, Terry Mather, says food in the freezer is like money in the bank. Some of our members have participated in virtual dancing with Caller Jeff Priest over the summer and plan to continue into the fall. Preliminary plans are in place to returning to regular dancing once we move out of phase 3 Covid limits. We have been in regular communication with our Caller Jim Lee. He continues to practice his chants and singing calls but says there will be no yellow rocks for a while. We have a contract with our previous dance location, South East Grey Support Services Pavilion, Flesherton for the 2021-2022 dance season. It is our intention to continue with our Introduction to Modern Square Dancing group from where we left off in March 2020 and also continue with our plus dancing for seasoned dancers – and address the rusty spots with both groups. It is the feeling of our Club that all dancers should have received the two Covid-19 vaccinations. As well they should be willing to wear a mask in the early weeks with social distancing. No food will be served, and dancers are required to bring their own water bottles. Mel Chamberlain Bugle Correspondent

Huron Bruce Swingers - Lucknow Welcome to "elbow bumps", social distancing, limited gathering numbers, face masks, and NO square dancing ...... yet! Is this the "new normal"? Let's hope not. The concern about the 4th wave is here and with schools opening, there is still a big question ......can we stop the spread? It is hoped that everyone who is able, has got their vaccination. We want to get back square dancing.

Page 9: BUGLE - swosda.ca

The Huron-Bruce Swingers did get two events in this summer. As mentioned in the June Bugle, Elaine and Ross Errington celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. The family organized a "drive by". Fifty-one cars drove by the happy couple sitting out in their driveway. Huron-Bruce Swingers were there on that beautiful July summer's day.

With small gatherings being allowed, the Huron-Bruce Swingers held an outdoor/large shed gathering and BBQ in August. It was great to see and visit with everyone. A quick meeting was held but the future is still not clear. The plan is to wait and see what SWOSDA says, but tentative plans were made to meet either dancing or just socially on October 6th. The question is where? We do not know what the school rental situation is or what any rental facility will be for dancing. We might be outdoors or in a shed again! On a sad note, we have to pass on the news of the passing of club member, Bob Weir on July 13th. Bob loved to dance, He and his wife Rose were great to be around, full of smiles and laughter. (It was great to see Rose at our August gathering.) Our condolences to Rose and the family. Now it is a "waiting game". Will we get back to dancing before the snow flies? Who is coming back, where will we dance? How are other clubs doing? Like with so many other things ...time will tell. Stay safe, everyone. Looking forward to "yellow rocks" again, Sharon McDonald, Bugle correspondent. PS. This Club has many old issues of the Bugle going back to the 1980s. If you are wanting any issues, or missing an issue you would like, let me ([email protected]) know and it will be passed on to you.

Huron Happy Hearts - Clinton Well you probably have seen and heard this many times, but still no dancing! We continue to be hopeful that the activity we so cherish will come back to life. We continue to stay in touch, and check on one another. We have been contacted by the school board indicating we should be able to get the school this fall, but few details are available to us at this time; we need to stay tuned! Costing is still unknown as

Page 10: BUGLE - swosda.ca

well as possible extra cleaning costs that may be applied. We will have to follow Public Health Guidelines, wear masks, stay distanced (when not dancing), and use hand sanitizer. Bring your own drink, and no food; lots to think about! The Bugle Guy

Jubilee Rounds - St. Jacobs

Greetings from Jubilee Rounds on Zoom: Summer is almost over and our Fall program is here ……!! As our regular in person club cannot start up yet, we will be continuing on Zoom for the foreseeable future. We are still enjoying folks joining us from all over. As we mentioned last month, we see visitors from several parts of Ontario plus Eastern and Western Canada, along with several from the USA. We have lost a few of our visitors as some clubs have started back up in the US and Western Canada. If you haven’t joined us yet, please do so soon! Although no one really watches the screen, remember you can turn your video off or point your camera at the ceiling if you don’t want folks to watch you dance.

Our Fall program starts on Thursday, September 9th at 7:00pm – 8:00pm. This season we will be featuring a dance teach once a month on select Thursdays starting at 6:00pm – 6:45pm We will advertise these teach dates on our website and send out a mass email to all those registered with our Jubilee Rounds program.

ANOTHER Special Event … A Phase 3 JIVE BLAST!! Friday September 24th & Saturday September 25th … Friday Evening, Saturday Morning and Saturday Afternoon. Contact us for details! [email protected] Virtual Round Dances: Our fall program registration form is available on our website. If you attend regularly, you know you don’t have to register but if you have NOT been Virtual dancing with us, please visit our website and sign up today. www.shadowlightdance.com

We see this version of Jubilee Rounds continuing even after Covid-19, as we find it a lot of fun and very convenient for dancers to attend. No need to fight traffic or spend time driving back and forth. We will still have some kind of physical club but most likely only once a month. So join us now and plan for the future!

Zoom Dancing requires a code to enter the dance. Due to the potential of inappropriate “zoom bombing” we require you to register. We don’t publish our codes; they are sent only to those who REGISTER. Please visit our website: www.shadowlightdance.com select “REGISTRATION” and complete the form.

In the meantime – Stay safe & healthy…. For info: Andrea or Jeff at: 1-519-752-2172 or [email protected] Check out our website and sign up for Virtual Dancing: www.jeffreypriest.com Happy Dancing, Jeff Priest

Sound Steppers - Owen Sound Hello fellow dancers and friends. Hope everyone is doing well and staying healthy. Summer (according to the calendar anyways) has come and gone again. It seems it has gone as fast as it came.

So September is here which means fall leaves are turning, corn and other fall crops are being harvested, fall fairs are being held, some are only virtually now, taking in the gardens and fruits for canning, kids are back to school, (watch out for all those kids excitingly running to the school buses) and on a normal year we would be back "dancing". But thanks to all the numbers growing again, we will have to wait a while longer again this year. Our club has been busy in our own ways, canning, spending time with our families and enjoying the weather at social distant get-to-gethers. We have sadly lost 2 members of our club this summer, Helena Szczepanowska in June and Bob Weir in July. They will be missed by everyone. We will wait patiently and look forward to the ok for in-person dancing to begin again... Until then, be well and take care of each other Friends. Hope to see you soon on the dance floor. Strathroy Swinging Duo's Summer is almost over and September is normally the beginning of another square dance season. Not this Year! The month of September marks the 30th anniversary for our club. Due to Covid restrictions we have not made celebration plans. Our executive held an outdoor meeting on August 6. The Anglican Church hall will be available for our club to dance on Tuesday nights once health restrictions have been lifted and the church opens their doors again. We are hoping it to be soon, but not likely until January 2022.

We keep Gerry Richardson in our thoughts and prayers as she is recuperating from surgery to mend her broken ankle. We anticipate to seeing her on the dance floor in the near future. We also keep Keith and Dorothy Wilton in our thoughts and prayers as Keith is currently in the hospital. We hope everyone had a good summer and we can’t wait to meet you in a square soon. Till then, Jake and Jean Hamstra

Thames Valley Dance Club – Woodstock Weeks, months and even a year have come and gone, and still we wait, still we anticipate dancing again. We, as a club have continued to communicate with each other through various means, primarily through our monthly trivia, catching up, sharing news and expressing interest and concern about others.

Page 13: BUGLE - swosda.ca

We have appreciated all those people that have joined us from other clubs at our trivia nights. Know that your concerns are ours because we know that your love of dance is the same as ours and sharing is medicine, not a cure, but knowing we are not alone soothes the painful reality of what this pandemic has inflicted upon our activity. We are thankful that our Club President Couple, Doug and Lois Turvey are committed to seeing the Thames Valley Dance Club through this troubled time and we all know when this is over we will have survived. We are all committed to growing our club, not only in numbers, but in restoring our club to the greatness we had achieved in the past. Bugle Correspondent

A mature (over 50) lady gets pulled over for speeding.... Older Woman: Is there a problem, Officer? Officer: Ma'am, you were speeding. Older Woman: Oh, I see. Officer: Can I see your license please? Older Woman: I'd give it to you but I don't have one. Officer: Don't have one? Older Woman: Lost it, 4 years ago for drunk driving. Officer: I see...Can I see your vehicle registration papers please. Older Woman: I can't do that. Officer: Why not? Older Woman: I stole this car. Officer: Stole it? Older Woman: Yes, and I killed and hacked up the owner. Officer: You what? Older Woman: His body parts are in plastic bags in the trunk if you want to see The Officer looks at the woman and slowly backs away to his car and calls for back up. Within minutes 5 police cars circle the car. A senior officer slowly approaches the car, clasping his half drawn gun. Officer 2: Ma'am, could you step out of your vehicle please! The woman steps out of her vehicle.

Older woman: Is there a problem sir? Officer 2: One of my officers told me that you have stolen this car and murdered the owner. Older Woman: Murdered the owner? Officer 2: Yes, could you please open the trunk of your car, please. The woman opens the trunk, revealing nothing but an empty trunk. Officer 2: Is this your car, ma'am? Older Woman: Yes, here are the registration papers. The officer is quite stunned. Officer 2: One of my officers claims that you do not have a driving license. The woman digs into her handbag and pulls out a clutch purse and hands it to the officer. The officer examines the license. He looks quite puzzled.
