The Return to In-Person Learning

By Steven L. CookSuperintendent of Schools

We are excited to be returning to In-Person Learning on August 25, 2021. The journey to return to a normal school year has not been without challenges for our students, staff, and the Haslett community. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we continue to navigate through some very difficult decisions for our district. Our goal has always been to provide a safe and caring learning experience for all students. As we look to begin the new 2021-22 school year, our staff has been busy planning for a successful start for our students.

Safety and SecurityThe safety and security of our students and staff continues to be a top priority for Haslett Public Schools. Our district will continue to practice proper COVID-19 safety protocols, including handwashing, cleaning, increased ventilation, and other mitigation strategies, as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, and the Ingham County Health Department. Mitigation strategies will be reassessed as transmission rates change in our area, or if we receive updated public health guidance. We will also continue to follow all safety procedures that were previously implemented, including the lock down of instructional buildings during regular school hours. Parents and visitors will enter our buildings through newly remodeled entrances that only have access through our main offices. Proper identification and sign-in procedures will be required for all visitors.

Haslett Virtual AcademyWe recognize that some students and families may prefer to remain online for a portion, or all, of the 2021-22 school year. A K-12 virtual option will be offered for all students through the Haslett Virtual Academy. This virtual option will be provided by a third-party contracted vendor and will NOT be delivered by Haslett teachers. The deadline for enrolling in the Haslett Virtual Academy is August 20, 2021. Please visit our website for additional information and offerings.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)DEI has been a major part of the Haslett K-12 District Administrative Goals for the past two years. Our staff has been collaborating with Dr. Terry Flennaugh, Associate Professor of Urban Education Initiatives at Michigan State University, along with Haslett’s Voice for Change (a student group comprised of current students and alumni of Haslett High School). One of the main goals is focused on the development of a framework for our DEI Plan. Over the past several months, students, staff, and our community have been surveyed to assist in the framework development of our DEI plan. An Equity Planning Committee has also been formed to assist in facilitating this process and will be holding forums to gather community input. It is a goal of the district to present a formal recommendation to the Haslett Board of Education by the end of December 2021. Additional information regarding the District Equity Plan can be found on the Haslett Public Schools DEI webpage.

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)Social and Emotional Learning will continue to be a priority for the upcoming 2021-22 school year. We recognize the challenges many of our students may face as they transition back to a normal school year. Haslett Public Schools is extremely fortunate to house counselors and social workers in all five of our district buildings. Our mental health professionals, administrators, teachers, and support staff are committed to working tirelessly this upcoming school year to maintain and create supports for those students who may need additional assistance.

We are hoping you are looking forward to the new school year. Thank you for your continued support of Haslett Public Schools. We would not be able to achieve the high level of success in our classrooms without your support. Feel free to contact my office if you have any questions or concerns.

Standard Crossing ProcedureAides are available on Haslett School District Kindergarten bus runs for the first two weeks of school. If your child needs to cross the street at the bus stop, our aides will teach the preferred procedure as outlined below:

• Always cross in front of the bus.• Take eight giant steps at the curb next to the bus

so the driver can see your feet.• Look up - school bus drivers will touch their

hand to their forehead as a signal that it is safe to cross.

• Stop at the traffic side of the bus, look both ways before continuing across, and cross only if no cars are approaching.

• Do not stop or go back if you drop something.• Stop at once if the horn blows.

Follow the Rules for Bus SafetyTo help ensure safe transportation for all our children, please review these rules carefully:

1. Students must be at their pick-up location five minutes before scheduled pick-up time. (Bus drivers will not wait for tardy students.)

2. Students must form a line and wait until the bus has come to a complete stop and the door is opened before boarding. Students must remain seated until the bus has come to a complete stop and the door is opened before getting off the bus.

3. During the bus ride, students are expected to remain in their seat keeping their feet out of the aisles, off the seats, and off the backs of the seats in front of them.

4. No talking or noise is allowed when the bus is approaching or crossing railroad tracks.

5. Side windows may be lowered only half way.

6. No loud talking, shouting, whistling, or profanity is allowed on the bus at any time.

7. No fighting, wrestling, or horseplay will be tolerated.

8. Animals (including reptiles, amphibians, and birds), skateboards, weapons, knives, fireworks, and dangerous objects are prohibited. MP3 players, iPods, and radios with headphones are permitted.

9. Aisles must be kept clear at all times. Items not able to fit under the student’s seat are prohibited. Eating, smoking, chewing tobacco, or possession of intoxicants or illegal substances is prohibited.

10. Anyone apprehended for deliberately damaging a bus (tearing seats, breaking windows, etc.) will be suspended from riding the bus and held financially responsible for repair or replacement.

11. No glass containers are allowed on the bus.12. A written request from the parent,

approved by the principal, will be necessary before a student may be admitted or discharged at a stop other than his/her regular stop, or be allowed to ride a bus other than his/her assigned route.

13. Transportation will be denied to any unauthorized persons.

14. Cell phones are prohibited from use on the bus.

15. Students will be suspended from riding a school bus for failure to obey the rules or when their actions in any way are considered detrimental to the rights, safety, and property of others or to the control of the bus.

Cameras on Board BusesCurrently, all of our school buses have cameras on board, as well as on the outside of school buses, providing our bus drivers with the ability to observe motorists. The pictures of vehicles in violation of bus safety rules will be submitted to the local police.

The camera system provides better safety and security for all of our students who use district transportation.

Equal Opportunity for AllTeaching children to respect others for who they are and what they can accomplish is as important as any lesson a school can provide. In addition to the fact that it is state and federal law, it is the policy of Haslett Public Schools that no person shall be discriminated against on the basis of gender, religion, race, color, national origin, disability, age, or any other protected characteristic, nor shall individuals be excluded from participation in, denied the benefits of, or otherwise be subject to discrimination on these grounds in any program or activity. Persons who believe they have been discriminated against should contact Diane Lindbert (Associate Superintendent and Title VI and IX Coordinator) at 339-8242, or James Polasek (Section 504 Officer) at 339-8205. Programs for vocational education are open to all students, regardless of race, sex, English language proficiency, or handicap. Vocational educational programs are available through the Haslett High School Office at 339-8249.

Integrated Pest Management (Advisory to Parents/Guardians)Dear Parent or Guardian:

State of Michigan law requires that schools and day care centers that may apply pesticides on school or day care property must provide an annual advisory to parents or guardians of students attending the facility.

Please be advised that Haslett Public Schools utilizes an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach to control pests. IPM is a pest management system that utilizes all suitable techniques in a total pest management system with the intent of preventing pests from reaching unacceptable levels or to reduce an existing population to an acceptable level. Pest management techniques emphasize sanitation, pest exclusion, and biological controls. One of the objectives of using an IPM approach is to reduce or eliminate the need for chemical applications of pesticides. However, certain situations may require the need for pesticides to be utilized.

As required by State of Michigan law, you will receive advance notice regarding the non-emergency application of a pesticide such as an insecticide, fungicide or herbicide, other than a bait or gel formulation, that is made to our buildings or grounds during this school year. Notification is not given for the use of sanitizers, germicides, disinfectants or anti-microbial cleaners. In certain emergencies, such as an infestation of stinging insects, pesticides may be applied without prior notice to prevent injury to students, but you will be notified following any such application.

Advance notification of pesticide applications, other than a bait or gel formulation, will be given by at least two (2) methods. The first method will be by posting at the main entrance of the building. The second method will be by posting information on our website.

Please be advised that parents or guardians are entitled to receive the advance notice of a pesticide application, other than a bait or gel formulation, by first class United States mail postmarked at least 3 days before the pesticide application, if they so request. If you prefer to receive the notification by first class mail, please contact the District Operations office at (517) 540-8010 to be added to the list.

Parents or guardians of children attending Haslett Public Schools may review the district’s Integrated Pest Management program and records of any pesticide application upon request.
