DECEMBER 2018 BUDDY 3 TWO-TIME GRAMMY WINNER TFloyd Domino announced the re- lease of a critically acclaimed solo album, Floyd Domino’s All-Stars. Domino has been honored with the Austin Chronicle Best Keyboards Award, as well as being a Buddy Texas Tornado and designated Academy of Western Art- ists Western Swing Instrumentalist of the Year, and in 2017 was in- ducted into the Texas Music Legends Hall of Fame. Auditions for the 9th Annual Rusty Weir Songwriter Competition got underway on November 28 hosted by Brett Dillon of KHYI. KNON will host the Reckless Rock Radio CD Release Party at the Ridlea Theater on December 14. The release party will feature Joey C. Jones Band, Legacy, Infidel Rising and Blackstar Republick. Events IN THE WAKE OF THE CRITICAL success of Blaze, directed and co- written by Ethan Hawke, and the acclaim for musician Ben Dickey in his first acting role as Blaze Foley; Ethan Hawke, Charlie Sexton and Louis Black announced the launch of the SexHawkeBlack record label. Dickey, who was awarded a U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for Achievement in Acting at the Sundance Film Festival 2018, will be the first musician signed to this new imprint in conjunction with the Nashville based Dualtone label. Mu- sic industry veteran Erika Pinktipps will oversee operations. Dickey re- leases his three song EP today titled “It’s All Different” which is set to coincide with Dickey’s appearance on the Today Show and NBC’s Jimmy Fallon, with Blaze director Ethan Hawke. The three song EP was re- corded in March 2018 in Austin with Charlie Sexton as producer and re- corded at the legendary Arlyn Stu- dios. “To have Charlie produce and play on a record for me,” Dickey says, “is an overwhelming dream that I never thought I would be living.” The full-length album, A Glimmer on the Outskirts, set for release in Janu- ary 2019. A documentary telling Sam Bush’s full story, Revival: the Sam Bush Story, was released digitally on Nov. 1 via Amazon for rent or purchase. Written, produced, and directed by Wayne Franklin & Kris Wheeler, Revival not only chronicles the life and career of the newgrass- creator, but weaves an emotional, inspiring story about the risks and rewards of being a musical icono- clast. Since its debut at the Nashville Film Festival in 2015, winning the audience award for Best Music Docu- mentary, the crowd-pleasing film has played to packed houses and stand- ing ovations at independent film fes- tivals (Sidewalk Film Festival, St. Louis International, Big Sky, Noise Pop, IF Film, Durango, Port Townsend, Woods Hole, and Hurri- cane) across the country and has screened at IBMA, Telluride, Film Falmouth, and Hear BG, picking up three more best documentary awards along the way. Dan Johnson released the “Hemingway” project earlier this year, a 5 song EP and companion book that addresses the issue of veteran suicide that is considered a crisis in our country. The “Hemingway” project is a deeply emotional piece of work that has attracted national at- tention since its release both through the music and stories and the US tour. NPR’s All Things Considered featured Johnson’s personal message to all military veterans, and all of us civilians who can truly help and be- come a part of the solution. Donna The Buffalo joined forces with legendary Producer/ Engineer BLAH By Bellicose Bullfeather BLAH Rob Fraboni to record Dance in the Street at Sonic Ranch Studio in El Paso, Texas. Best known as producer of The Last Waltz soundtrack, Fraboni is also acclaimed for his work with Bob Dylan, The Band, Eric Clapton, and The Rolling Stones. Fraboni set out to capture the es- sence of Donna The Buffalo’s live performances on a studio record. The Americana dance band re- leased Dance in the Street, their first new album in five years, capturing the dynamic energy that has earned the band the love and respect of their fans, “the Herd”, for thirty years. Cuban-American singer- songwriter Johnny Goudie released his new solo EP Leper Hands.” This four-track record heavily features Goudie’s piano playing, mixing in vintage guitars and upbeat drum beats with his smooth vocals. A new collaborative CD from Hand Drawn Records for Austin- based artist Brandon Callies (of Black Tie Vendetta and Brandon Callies & The American Revival) and Dallas musician Paco “Francisco” Estrada (best known for South FM and Paco Estrada & One Love, Callies’ label mate) released recently. The musical duo teamed up to form a new project called Heart of the City. The band’s debut self-titled album – a fusion of rock and soul bridges the gap between Austin and Dallas – and delivers a Motown-inspired album that’ll please music fans across Texas. Austin-based record label Big Indie plans to debut a recurring event where the local label shows off their biggest and brightest talents. “Big Nights” will take place December 16 at Antone’s with Jackie Venson. Sydney Anderson released her debut EP, out this month. The record is a searing blend of Texas and Nash- ville country that announces the pop- country artist as a force to be reck- oned with in the country music scene. Prior to her EP, Sydney spent years performing well-known honky-tonk stages like Tootsies and The Stage, took voice lessons from Linda Septein alongside Demi Lovato, and even made an appearance on Oxygen’s The Glee Project. Houston-based Grand Old Griz- zly released their new spitfire Ameri- cana album Country Music Pyrite , a combination of western Americana wisdom and Gulf Coast grit. The robust 12 tracks are a lyrical feast. “Pure Country Pyrite” explores themes both poignant and peculiar, and drips with irony and humorous wit. in Memoriam NO MATTER THE SIZE OF THE ROOM, WHEN HE SPOTTED ME ON the floor, he’d give me a thumb’s up. We (Buddy magazine) almost lost Brook Mays as an advertiser when my interview with these two, laced with f-bombs at a rapid pace, ran as-is. They were colorful, entertaining and honest.
