Denny Home
The Home Builders Association of Greater Columbia through the generosity of its members will build a home for the Denny Family. Brian Denny suffered a serious injury at work on March 15, 2010. Brian, an employee of Stock Building Supply in Columbia, had a C3/C4 injury. He currently is paralyzed from his shoulders down. Brian and his wife, Jessica, have two beautiful children, Kendall, 7 years old and Cooper, 5 years old.
The totally accessible home will be built in Fisher’s Woods in Northeast Columbia on a lot donated by C & C Builders of Columbia, Inc. and will be known as Lagniappe (pronounced LAN-yap) meaning “a little something extra” or “an extra or unexpected gift”.
“We feel that the Lord has definitely given us a ‘lil lagniappe by blessing us with this house - it’s more than we ever dreamed, and we’re so thankful!” –The Dennys

The membership met for a General Membership Meeting on
Thursday, August 12 for a rare lunch meeting. The reason
for the new time was the schedule of our speaker for the
day. USC Head Baseball Coach Ray Tanner, fresh off the bus after
leading the college baseball team to the National Championship
title, was our guest. The meeting started with a buffet lunch at
Seawell’s and members filling all available chairs. Although limited
to only one guest each, we managed to fill the entire room with
over 350 people.
The meeting began with recognition of new members of which
we had a good group on hand (see photo). We then recognized
members who have reached new levels in the SPIKE Club (see
photos). One outstanding accomplishment in the SPIKE Club
was made by Johnette Jeffcoat of Boral Bricks, Inc. Johnette
reached the 500d Statesman level of the club. This level has been
attained by only one other member in our association, Frank Clark.
Congratulations and Thank You to Johnette for reaching this level
and helping grow the HBA these many years.
After the awards were given, Coach Ray Tanner entered
the building and he brought along the Men’s Baseball National
Championship trophy with him. The coach entered to a standing
ovation as he found his way to the lectern and the trophy was
placed nearby. Steven Mungo of The Mungo Company, our meeting
sponsor, introduced the coach. Tanner then gave a recount of the
2009 – 2010 USC Baseball season and gave blow-by-blow account
of the year and how the players reacted to each win and loss. The
crowd of members felt the frustration and jubilation of each turn
while the coach recounted what happened.
After the talk, the coach took a couple of questions from the
audience and then was gracious enough to sign some baseballs
that were immediately auctioned off by Jimmy Derrick. Funds
raised from this auction were used to purchase a defibrillator for
the HBA Office and events. After the auction, the coach stuck
around and met with members, signed autographs and posed for
pictures until everyone had been satisfied.
Our next meeting is the Annual Meeting of the Membership
and will be held on Thursday, November 11 at Seawell’s. We will
elect the 2011 – 2012 HBA Board of Directors at this meeting.

Home Improvement SHowthe 16th annual Home improvement Show was held September 24 – 26, 2010 at
the columbia metropolitan convention center in the historic Vista district of
downtown columbia. the change of date from mid-august to late-September
and the change of venue from the Sc Fairgrounds to the Vista brought a new
feel to the annual show.
During the show, Chairman John Westfall visited every booth and chose three displays
he determined added the most to the show with their design and overall feel. One booth
of each size (10’ x 10’, 10’ x 20’ and Over 10’ x 20’) were selected as Best in Show.
Congratulations to Comfort Services, Merl’s Countertops, Inc., and Rock Solid Brick
Pavers & Stone, Inc. on their awards, and a big thanks to these companies for putting
together great displays in the show.
One special feature during the Home Improvement Show was the Environmini playhouse
presented by the Green Building Council of Greater Columbia. Mungo Homes/Mungo
Construction built the environmentally-friendly home and donated it to the Leukemia &
Lymphoma Society – SC Chapter. A silent auction was held throughout the show and
one lucky family from Lexington ended up winning the prize. The winning bid was nearly
$1,700 – a great deal for a wonderful playhouse. Proceeds went directly to the Leukemia
& Lymphoma Society.
Plans are already being made for the 2011 Home Improvement Show. If you’d like to join
the Home Show Committee, please contact a member of the HBA Staff.
Chairman John Westfall with Todd Wagstaff of Comfort Services. Their 20’ x 20’ booth was inviting and informative, and took the Best in Show – Innovative Award.
Merl’s Countertops Inc. made their Home Improvement Show debut this year with a very well designed 10’ x 20’ booth. Chairman Westfall presents the Best in Show – Imaginative Award during the show.
Scaling down to a 10’ x 10’ booth this year but managing to fit in the stuff from a 10’ x 20’ booth took some creativity on behalf of Todd Morris of Rock Solid Brick Pavers & Stone, Inc. He did a great job with it and was presented with the Best in Show – Creative Award by Chairman Westfall.

Due to a heightened interest in new homes in the greater
Columbia area in recent months, the Home Builders Association
of Greater Columbia is bringing back the popular Parade of
Homes in May of 2011. Northeast Columbia’s Lake Carolina will
host the event in The Peninsula neighborhood.
We currently have four builders signed up to build five homes in
the 2011 Parade of Homes. They are Capogrossi Construction,
Inc., Essex Homes, Southeast, Hallmark Homes International,
Inc., and Mungo Homes/Sovereign Homes (see above). Lots are
still available but you must act quickly. Call Earl McLeod at
(803) 256-6238 today.
The Parade of Homes is a single-site showing of new homes that
are fully decorated and landscaped. Attendees are able to walk
through each home and see the latest in building techniques and
technology and enjoy beautiful home décor.
Lake Carolina, situated on 1850 acres in Columbia, South
Carolina, has been named Community of the Year nine times in
the Sales & Marketing Council of Columbia’s REGAL Awards.
With over six miles of shoreline on a 200-acre freshwater lake
where families can swim, fish, sail and ski; resort-style amenities;
a Town Center complete with everything from doctors’ offices
to restaurants; Columbia’s newest YMCA; and one of the finest
school districts in the state, the interconnected, traditional
neighborhoods of Lake Carolina have become the new gathering
place for Columbia families. Lake Carolina truly provides a place
for its residents to live, work, learn and play.
The Peninsula is the only gated community of Lake Carolina.
This neighborhood is nestled on the southwest side of Lake
Carolina and features large lots with beautiful views.

September after Hours at Creative Tile
The Columbia Remodelers and the Green Building Council of Greater Columbia met for an After
Hours at Creative Tile in West Columbia on Tuesday, September 14. The flagship store of the
three-store local franchise was recently renovated making for a better display of products and
flow. So, although we had been to this location in the past, it was like a new visit for our members.
If you were unable to make it to the event, we highly suggest you visit in the near future. The store
is located at 149 Queen Parkway, West Columbia, 29169.
Special thanks to everyone who attended the event and to the staff of Creative Tile for once again
putting together a very nice event for our members. We certainly do appreciate it!
The membership of the HBA of Greater
Columbia Remodelers met on Monday, August
23 at Seawell’s for a Quarterly Membership
Meeting. Over 40 members and guests were
in attendance.
Our guest speaker for the meeting was HBA
and council member Roy Kramer of CSC
Habitat for Humanity. Roy told us about the
organization and how it helps to put families
into homes. He also gave us information on
future projects the organization will take on
including the rehabilitation of existing homes.
He reminded us about the Habitat for Humanity
ReStore located on 378 in West Columbia and
how members can donate to the store. If you
are tearing out or demolishing a home you can
call the ReStore to set up a Harvesting of that
home. Their team will come to the property
and remove anything of value and take it to the
ReStore for sale. Traditional donations of new
or used building materials, furniture, etc. are
accepted year round. For more information
on CSC Habitat for Humanity and the ReStore,
please visit www.habitatcsc.org.

Giving Your Business To?Who Are You
Most of our members businesses, and that probably includes
yours, are struggling during this down economic cycle. They are
working harder than ever and some have been forced to think
work differently and to develop new markets as old market
opportunities disappear. We are all looking for new customers.
If it’s any comfort, we know we’re not alone but it should also
remind us to think of the other people that are in the same
situation. A new contract or the next sale could influence the
future of their business too.
Imagine if all 1,000 of our members agreed that they would buy
only from other members. It seems to me that it would create
instant prosperity for us all. Whether you need a new deck, a
roof, a vehicle, home remodel, car insurance, a new driveway,
etc., it’s all in your Membership Directory. And it would mean
more business for you too.
We’ve tossed around the “Do business with members” catch
phrase long enough. Today there is every reason to give your
business to a member. Take a look at your vendor list and move
your business from non-members to members. Look in your
Membership Directory before you give your business away. Your
business could depend on it.

matt mungo assumes new roleThe Mungo family of companies is pleased to announce that Matt Mungo has assumed the role of Vice President. Matt began his career with the Mungo Companies as a young teenager and represents the third generation in the Mungo family business.
Matt’s function as vice president will be to seek out opportunities for new land positions in the Greater Columbia area. His current focus has been to identify, research and pursue lots in already developed neighborhoods that may have been abandoned by other developers and builders due to the tough economic climate.
Matt is a Licensed Home Builder, a member of the Greater Columbia Home Builders Association, serves on the board of the Central South Carolina Chapter of the American Red Cross and the Columbia/Charleston Better Business Bureau. A native of Irmo, South Carolina, Matt is a graduate of Wofford College.
mungo announces 3rd annual campaign to Benefit Harvest HopeFor a third year, Mungo Homes has committed as much as $100,000 to Harvest Hope Food Bank to help with an increased demand for food during these tough economic times. Harvest Hope has provided food for nearly 1.4 million people this year, but expects that demand to grow by another half million people in need. This translates to about 40 million pounds of food required for the coming months.
Harvest Hope CEO Denise Holland said, “Seeing the faces of hungry people every day is heartbreaking. You can look at these faces and see their pain and fear. It is a huge blessing once again to have this campaign.”
Mungo Homes will match every dollar raised – up to $100,000 – during the month of September. Area businesses are encouraged to follow the lead taken by Mungo Homes and help in the relief effort.
The previous two years the community dug deep and, along with the Mungo match, funds raised during each of the 30-day campaigns topped $400,000.

to earn the designation of Certified Master Builder. “This means that Wade has gone far beyond merely holding a state builders license,” said Master Builder Chairman James Graves.
Graves explained, “The Master Builder Program was created by the Home Builders Association of South Carolina as a way to increase the professionalism of home builders in the state and to provide an increased level of protection for consumers.”
In order to reach this level, McGuinn had to participate in 20 hours of continuing education, provide seven reference letters, assure a one-year warranty on all his homes and show at least five years’ experience in home building.
Master Builders must sign an agreement that requires him or her to provide the client with a construction contract and that he maintain membership in the Home Builders Association.
Although South Carolina has one of the most rigorous licensing requirements in the country, the Home Builders Association of SC has begun this program to allow builders to go up even higher.
“This program is good for our builders,” said Graves, “but it is even better news for consumers.” Graves said only twenty states require a person to take a written test to be licensed. “Although we are one of those states we have felt we could do even better,” said Graves.

Washington, D.C.,– Home Builders
Institute (HBI), the workforce development
arm of the National Association of Home
Builders (NAHB), announced that it has
been awarded a three year grant from the
U.S. Department of Justice to operate an
industry-sponsored mentoring program
for underserved, at-risk and court involved
youth. The Construction-Coaching
Opportunities for Reentry Employment
(C-CORE) program will match 5,000 youth
aged 16 to 18 with over 1,600 mentors
recruited from Home Builders Associations, NAHB Student
Chapters, other business organizations and local community.
“HBI has long recognized the need to provide on-going support
during the critical post-training period, in order to ensure
successful community reintegration, create positive role model
relationships and outcomes for youth,” said Fred Humphreys,
president and chief executive officer of HBI. “By matching youth
with industry mentors, we hope to further strengthen their
commitment to a career in residential construction.”
Mentoring will be career focused to help improve job placement
and retention in home building industry related careers. In
addition to creating positive peer-relationships, the program
aims to reduce recidivism and youth involvement in substance
abuse, truancy and other high risk behaviors, while improving job
placement and retention opportunities.
As with other HBI programs, the program will include student
involvement in local community service projects. Local
intermediary organizations in 35 locations will facilitate the
day-to-day operations of C-CORE under the supervision of HBI
Regional Coordinators. The 11 states served by the program
are Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana,
Mississippi, Nevada, New Mexico, South Carolina and Texas.
