Michael Frank long time friend musical partner and business manager for David Honeyboy Edwards has announced that in honor of and tribute to Mr Edwards The Honeyboy Edwards Fund for the Blues has been established within the National Blues Museum in St Louis MO Preparations for this fund have been underway since medical issues forced Honeyboyrsquos retirement in July 2011 after 83 years of performing

The purpose of the fund is to acknowledge the contributions of other elders of the blues such as Robert Lockwood Homesick James Henry Townsend and Pinetop Perkins This will be done through providing scholarships to blues workshops internships camps and other events teaching blues history musicianship and the business of sustaining a career in the blues business Contributions to this fund may be made to The National Blues Museum and designated to the

Veteran Debbie Davies has performed with a whos who of contemporary blues greats Names include John Mayall Albert Collins Tab Benoit Kenny Neal James Cotton Mick Taylor Peter Green Coco Montoya Duke Robillard and Charlie Musselwhite Thats some pretty good company and critics and fans alike have taken notice In 1997 and 2010 the Los Angeles native grabbed the Blues Music Award honors for Best Female Contemporary Blues Artist In 2012 Debbie finds a new home with Long Island NYrsquos MC Records Her debut for the label [her 11th album total] is called After the Fall and the album of all originals reflects on themes including the passing of her good friend Robin Rogers We enjoyed After the Fall so much we made it our CD of the Month for July (Source TheBluesMobilecom)

I was turned on to this tasty disc from Lloyd Jones back in January and now that I have my own copy I can tell you that this is one of the freshest and unexpected surprises of the year for me and itrsquos very funky too The opening ldquoBend in the Riverrdquo jumps right at you with its churning guitar riffs soulful B3 and Jonesrsquo tantalizing vocals This first cut and the next five that follow are strong tunes making it clearly evident that this is one heck of an album Hopefully this CD will allow Lloyd Jones to attain the nationwide attention he deserves for putting this excellent project together Last but not least I suspect that Mr Jonesrsquo new CD will make it onto many 2012 ldquobest ofrdquo lists too I can tell you that it will likely be on my top ten as Doinrsquo What It Takes is so neatly crafted and precisely conceived from beginning to end (Source BluesWax Bob Putignano)

I Can Make That HappenmdashJohnnie Bassett (Sly Dog Records)

Irsquoll never forget the first time I heard Johnnie Bassettrsquos music almost 20 years ago I knew he was someone worth keeping my ear on The quality in his music is from another era that brought us music from people like BB Guitar Slim Lowell Fulson Robert Nighthawk and T-Bone This CD is full of strong steady songs that donrsquot miss a beat Everyone is going to gravitate toward different songs on the disc but there is nothing to not like unless you really prefer hard blues rock This is a traditional blues album that is a safe bet for any blues fan You can nitpick which songs are the best all you want but you have all the makings of a classic album here The songwriting is witty and can go toe-to-toe with some legends Bassettrsquos guitar licks are sweet as honey The band The Brothers Groove is tight The Motor City Horns appear on about four songs so you get a well-rounded play off multiple instruments that creates a total song worth listening to Kudos to the Bassett Hound and crew (Source BluesWax Kyle Palarino)

Looking Forward Looking Back mdash Eddie Martin (Blueblood Records)

Eddie Martin does a 180 degree shift from last yearrsquos solo acoustic release by plugging in his guitar while getting backing from a band filled with horn players This time the all-original material pays tribute to the rocking blues of T-Bone Walker Johnny ldquoGuitarrdquo Watson and Elmore James Martin is right in the middle of everything handling all of the vocals and guitar parts while adding doses of harmonica and piano It doesnrsquot take Martin long to establish that he has a real affinity for the music he is paying homage to Martinrsquos frantic slide work will keep your blood pumping mdash but the disc doesnrsquot suffer any momentum when the pace slows and Martin shows he can navigate a chromatic harp While they donrsquot blaze any new trails here Martin and his friends obviously had a lot of fun with this project The end result is an unrelenting party with multi-talented Martin as the master of ceremonies I now have a sneaking suspicion that there are similar gems waiting to be discovered amongst Martinrsquos eleven previous recordings You can mark this one down as well-worth a listen (Source Blues Blast Mark Thompson

Andy Griffith ndash

A Serious Musician

(June 1 1926 ndash July 3 2012)

Andy Samuel Griffith was an American actor television producer Grammy Award-winning Southern-gospel singer and writer

As a student at Mount Airy High School (NC) Griffith cultivated an interest in the arts and participated in the schools drama program Griffith learned to sing and play trombone from a local minister who led the townrsquos brass band A growing love of music particularly swing would change his life

After graduating from high school in 1944 he became a student at the University of North Carolina where he was a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia a national music fraternity for men He graduated with a bachelor of music degree in 1949

Beginning in the early 1950s Griffith made various recordings ndash comic monologues old-time hymns and what we now call Americana In 1959 he released an album titled Andy Griffith Shouts the Blues and Old

Timey Songs which includes a guest appearance by bluesmen Brownie McGhee and Sonny Terry

Griffith sang as part of some of his acting roles most notably in A Face In The Crowd and in many episodes of both The Andy Griffith Show and Matlock In addition to his recordings he made an album of upbeat country and gospel tunes during the run of The Andy Griffith Show which included a version of the shows theme sung by Griffith under the title The Fishin Hole

In recent years he recorded successful albums of classic Christian hymns ndash his most successful was the 1996 release I Love to Tell the Story 25 Timeless Hymns which was certified ldquoplatinumrdquo In 2008 Griffith appeared in country singer Brad Paisleys music video Waitin on a Woman (mdashRM)

While researching Griffithrsquos musical history I came across someonersquos home-made memorial album titled ldquoRock Blues

roots music record label

Damn I wish I had thought of that title but then again I wish Irsquod thought of almost everything in A Face In the Crowd

For the past thirty years I have listed Night Of The Hunter as my all-time favorite movie A Face In The Crowd just took that title belt

When I wrote my column about Andy Griffith it had been nearly a decade since I had seen the movie The parallels between this movie and events as recent as last week continue to move this picture from interesting to lockndashyour-doors chilling in its surreal

foreshadowing of July 2012

Free Man In the Morning

As a instrumental version of ldquoKey To The Highwayrdquo plays in the background we roll up on an idyllic town square in Arkansas Patricia Neal is a reporter with the local radio station doing a ldquoman on the streetrdquo series of interviews

When she decides to enter the local drunk tank we descend from Mayberry to Cape Fear The hoboes are surly and filthy The main holding tank is for whites and in the background a cell resembling an animal stall houses the lone black inmate Her attempts to get

some humor out of the men result in an obscene impression of a jackass by real-life southern comic Rod Brasfield

The sheriff kicks a sleeping form under a blanket and we get our first glimpse of the vile lecherous drifter named Lonesome Rhodes He eyes Neal from head to toe and pulls out his guitar

Running his hands gently over it her proceeds to inform her

ldquoYou see unlike a woman I can always count on this guitar Yeah

when she getrsquos out of tune I just give her a little twist and she straightens right outrdquo The word ldquotwistrdquo is delivered with a snarl and a laugh sinister beyond words

He then proceeds to hit an ldquoErdquo chord and sing ldquoIrsquom a thousand miles from homerdquo This is Hollywoodrsquos first and last use of the blues at itrsquos most stripped-down bare-bones honesty hellip [Read the

A Face In The Crowd is the darkest movie Irsquove ever seen it may have forever spoiled The Andy Griffith Show for me

Therersquos not one single moment of comic relief none Forget Oh Brother Where Art Thou mdash this is the real post-war South

I wonrsquot spoil it for you but check out the scene at the end briefly

hinting that Rhodesrsquo true personality has been hidden the entire

time

The Charlotte Blues Society (CBS) is dedicated to the promotion and preservation of the American Blues tradition through the presentation of concerts forums workshops and educational programs in Charlotte and surrounding areas Founded in the Spring of 1993 CBS has steadily

grown in membership and popularity in support of this musical art form

CBS is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization governed by a Board of Directors and is an affiliated member of The Blues Foundation the umbrella organization for a worldwide network of 165 affiliated Blues societies and has individual memberships around the globe The Blues Foundation produces the Blues Music Awards Keeping the Blues Alive Awards Blues Hall of Fame Induction and the International Blues

CBS members gather on ldquoBLUESundayrdquo the 1st Sunday of each month 800 PM at The Double Door Inn Meetings include announcements and updates special guests and an Open Mic Blues Jam BLUESunday is free to CBS members and only $500 for non-members The Board of Directors also meets every 1st Sunday Meetings are open to

the membership
