Last month‘s
BLUESunday was an unexpected treat!
Charlotte‘s own award-
winning “Mookie” Brill was joined by a
newcomer to our area, Ben Hernandez.
Together, they served up some old style Blues with a modern day twist.
(Well, maybe the wash tub bass
isn‘t so modern!)
An unexpected treat was getting to hear singer/songwriter
J. Edwards who now
lives in South Carolina. His vocal style can be powerful or subtle —
either way, his singing gets your attention! We hope he makes it back again for some
more jammin‘.

The Richard Gere
Guitar Collection
~ Who Knew! ~
Blues Beat Magazine (10/11/11) – We didn't even know that actor Richard Gere played guitar. But if you love guitars, then sorry, The Richard Gere Collection was sold at Christie's (NYC) October 11, and you missed it.
Blues Beat took a look at some of the actor's awesome collection. Whether Mr. Gere plays or not, he has a fine eye for some fine instruments. We couldn‘t get enough of looking through the instruments for sale from his collection.
Mr. Gere had this to say: ―Who doesn‘t love guitars? I‘ve had a love affair with them since I was a kid. They have been my true friends through the best and worst of times. Without ever thinking I was putting a collection together, there seems to be one. I just bought what I liked, what sounded good – what played well. With some I just got lucky. Each has their own voice; their own touch – even the ones that look identical. Each has a story and something beautiful and tender about them. Fragile and tough. Survivors. Each has been played, loved and appreciated. I remember when and why I got each of them and it‘s more than a little painful to let them go. There are some real killer guitars here. But the time has come. All my proceeds from this sale will go to humanitarian causes around the world. Enjoy.‖
The Southern Folklife Collection (SFC) ranks as one of
the nation‘s foremost archival resources for the study of American folk music and popular culture. SFC holdings extensively document all forms of southern musical and oral traditions across the entire spectrum of individual and community expressive arts, as well as mainstream media production.
Established in 1940 at the University of North Carolina, the ―Curiculum in Folklore‖ was one of the first graduate programs of its kind in the country. In 1968, the UNC Folklore Archive was established; in 1983-86, a private collection was purchased, merged, and became the Southern Folklife Collection, The SFC was officially opened for research during the Sounds of the South conference at UNC in April 1989. The SFC holds several conferences and symposiums about folk music each year.
This year the SFC held “A Tribute to Howlin’ Wolf” program on September 19. The program featured both live music and first-hand accounts of the charismatic post-war blues legend, Chester Burnett, known as Howlin‘ Wolf. Steve Weiss, head of the Southern Folklife Collection, stated: ―Howlin‘ Wolf played a key role in shaping American blues, and especially electric blues … He is the perfect figure to launch this series that honors the amazing blues resources here in Wilson Library.‖ Read about the event at:
http://bluesrevue.com/2011/10/blues-bytes- howlin-wolf-symposium-10-7-11/#
The series will continue on Nov. 17 with a panel discussion and concert to remember the Rev. Gary Davis, a Piedmont guitarist. A third event, in February, will recall Eddie James ―Son‖ House.
For more information about the Southern Folklife Collection and future events, contact Steve Weiss at 919-962-7105 or e-mail [email protected]
Reverend Gary Davis was born in 1896 in Laurens, SC – a blind Harlem street singer
who began his recording career in the 1940s. As a finger-style guitarist he developed
a complex yet swinging approach to picking that has influenced generations of
players, including Jerry Garcia, Ry Cooder, and Dave Van Ronk. And as a composer
of religious and secular music, he created a substantial body of work that has been
recorded by, among others, Bob Dylan, Jackson Browne, Peter Paul & Mary and the
Grateful Dead, not to mention Davis's own releases.

MICHAEL FRANK received the 2011 Lifetime Achievement Award by Blues Blast Magazine. Frank moved from Englind to Chicago in 1972, and soon met and became friends with the late David “Honeyboy” Edwards, the last link to the early days of the Delta blues when celebrated musicians like Robert Johnson taught Honeyboy about the music. Michael began playing harmonica with Edwards and helped out in the role of manager. Their relationship grew over three decades with Michael serving as booking agent, harp player, tour manager, and promoter. Through Michael‘s efforts, Honeyboy received well-deserved acclaim around the world including several Blues Music awards and a Grammy award for Lifetime Achievement.
In addition to being a musician and manager, Michael also started his own record label back in 1978 – Earwig Records – using it to introduce new and veteran performers as well as refocus attention on forgotten performers: Sam Car, Frank Frost, Big Jack Johnson, Sunnyland Slim, Jimmy Dawkins, Louisiana Red, Homesick James Williamson, and many more.

New E-Book: STEADY ROLLIN’
Bob Margolin is one of the Blues World‘s great guitar players. He is also one of the Blues World‘s finest writers. His long-running column in Blues Revue is one of the popular features and many Blues Revue readers have reported that his column is the first thing they read. Bob has long talked about writing a book and he has been working on it for nearly as long.
A few weeks ago Blues Revue/BluesWax shared the introduction to Steady Rollin‘, which
was later followed by an excerpt from the chapter, ―Snapshots and Their Stories,‖ which includes some of Bob Margolin‘s famous photography and how he got into photography.

―… you can browse this book and start anywhere, as with an album of
recorded songs and unlike with a novel. Start with a short story at the end if you want. You don‘t need the context of anything in the beginning of the book, including this introduction.
―I choose to focus only on my writing and photos in this eBook. Even my short autobiography highlights here relate only to my professional life. I am blessed with a wonderful family and friends, but they‘re not in this
book.
―I hope my book plays to your heart, as music should. It might make you think too, but only if you want to. It‘s my pleasure to share our love of music and musicians. You certainly can get to know me better from however much you browse or digest. If you would like to make it a conversation, please write to me at [email protected] - I‘ll try to answer everything you write as much as I humanly can.‖

George "Mojo" Buford (Nov. 10, 1929 – Oct. 11, 2011)
On July 4, George ―Mojo‖ Buford returned home to Minneapolis following a gig at Yoshi‘s nightclub in San Francisco, where he performed with his fellow vets from Muddy Waters‘ band, Hubert Sumlin and James Cotton. A day later, the
legendary blues harpist went in for heart surgery and never fully recovered, according to family. Buford, 81, died of heart failure on Oct. 11
Buford was born in Hernando, Miss., in 1929 and later moved to Memphis, where he began studying the blues and the harmonica. In 1952, he set up shop in Chicago, forming a band
and befriending the late Muddy Waters, the man known as the father of modern Chicago blues. He wound up joining Waters‘ band a few years later and played with Waters off and on until his death in 1983, including gigs with the Rolling Stones in England and with many of the legendary San Francisco bands at the Fillmore in the late-‘60s.
Buford moved to Minneapolis in 1962 to pursue his own career. Buford earned the nickname "Mojo," thanks to his crowd-friendly cover of "Got My Mojo Working," a song popularized by Waters. In 1963, Buford issued his first album, "Exciting Harmonica Sound of Mojo Buford," and recorded sporadically over the years. He was most prolific in the latter half of the '90s, releasing several discs on Minneapolis label Blue Loon. Buford lovingly credited Waters as a mentor and continued to play with him off and on until Waters' death in 1983.
"His music will live on forever," Abe Markoe said of his father. "And his great smile, people will certainly remember his great smile."

EG Kight:: Lip Service (VizzTone Records)
Producer Paul Hornsby (Marshall Tucker Band, Charlie Daniels, The Hour Glass with Duane and Gregg Allman, Bonnie Bramlett, Bobby Whitlock, Wet Willie, and more) has worked on previous Kight albums, and as you would expect there‘s that southern rock groove in this latest release. Yet Kight stamps her own signature vocals and contributes songwriting (and co-authored) credits on 11 of the 12 songs.
Kight dedicates this fine recording to Koko Taylor – ‖Koko‘s Song‖ is an obvious tribute and I‘m cer-tain Koko would have approved, both musically and with the appropriate lyrics that include ―Wang Dang Doodle,‖ ―Let the Good Times Roll,‖ and statements saying that Taylor will always be the Queen of the Blues and so forth. John Nemeth guests on ―Somewhere Down Deep‖ and nails it alongside Kight; it‘s incredibly soulful as these two really meld extremely well together.
Lip Service is Kight‘s seventh album. At just 45, the future continues to look bright for this classy southern lassie. Kight vocally impresses from end to end, and (with the help of Paul Hornsby) both know how to assemble a stellar band, plus there‘s above-par songwriting that is potent. What‘s not to like here? Nothing!
--Excerpt from a review by Bob Putignano, contributing editor at BluesWax
Steve Miller Band:: Let Your Hair Down (Space Cowboy Records)
For those familiar with his entire background, Steve Miller‘s return to his blues roots with 2010‘s Bingo! came as no surprise. What was surprising, however, was the ease with which Miller jumped back into the blues after a studio absence of some 17 years. Miller returns less than a year later with another solid collection of blues and R&B covers. This current release also features the last recorded performances by Miller‘s long-time musical foil, beloved blues harp player Norton Buffalo.
Let Your Hair Down delivers inspired performances of songs by Elmore James, Howlin’ Wolf, and Jimmie Vaughan, among others. Miller reinvents Muddy Waters‘ ―Can‘t Be Satisfied‖ with a Delta-by-way-of-Frisco slinky guitar riff that mesmerizes the listener, capturing Waters‘ spirit while adding a bit of contemporary edge to the song. Throughout Let Your Hair Down, Miller pays his respects to the blues tradition with performances that match his love for the music with his own unique musical vision. While Miller‘s sub-dued vocals are throughout much of the album, his guitar-playing is superb, nuanced, and full of life, enhancing rather than diminishing the legacy of these songs.

Two of North Carolina's finest songwriters
Michael Reno Harrell & David Childers
The Charlotte Folk Society's next second-Friday Gathering brings together two of North Carolina's treasured veteran songwriters, David Childers and Michael Reno Harrell. This will be an evening to remember as David and Michael trade songs and share their views of 21st century life in the South.
To read more about these artists, go to: www.folksociety.org/2011_12/ChildersHarrell.shtml
The concert gets underway at 7:30 PM in the Great Aunt Stella Center, 926 Elizabeth Avenue, in Charlotte.
Doors open at 7 PM.
November 18 ~ Joe Bonamassa
Ovens Auditorium
Tickets: http://auditoriumcharlotte.com
As Joe Bonamassa grows his reputation as one of the world‘s greatest guitar players, he is also evolving into a charismatic blues-rock star and singer-songwriter of stylistic depth and emotional resonance. His ability to connect with live concert audiences is
transformational, and his more recent albums bring energy that‘s more powerful than the album before.
Last year also coincided with Bonamassa‘s twentieth year as a professional musician, an extraordinary timeline for a young artist just into his 30s. A child prodigy, Bonamassa was finessing Stevie Ray Vaughan licks when he was seven and by the time he was ten, had caught B.B. King‘s ear. After first hearing him play, King said, ―This kid‘s potential is unbelievable. He hasn‘t even begun to scratch the surface. He‘s one of a kind.‖ By age 12, Bonamassa was opening shows for the blues icon and went on to tour with venerable acts including Buddy Guy,
Foreigner, Robert Cray, Stephen Stills, Joe Cocker and Gregg Allman.
The Cash Box Kings:: Holler and Stomp (Blind Pig Records)
On their Blind Pig label debut, the Kings explore the various byways where traditional 'blues' and 'country' music intersect. They cover classic sides by Hank Williams, Sr., the Rolling Stones and Muddy Waters, seamlessly mixed with their own originals. Holler And Stomp is one of the freshest and most distinctive blues records in recent memory.
"Now it's one thing to say you're interested in this old music, and even to be able to play a few of the tunes with some accuracy. But it's another thing entirely to be able to re-create the originals and write new material that's faithful to this 1940's and 50's style, and do it with authentic vitality."
- Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
"The word on the street is that The Cash Box Kings are the up-and-coming young guns of the Chicago blues scene, and with good reason. The music has the liveliness and energy that only roots music genius can provide." - Chicago Blues Guide

The Charlotte Blues Society (CBS) is dedicated to the promotion and preservation of the American Blues tradition through the presentation of concerts, forums, workshops, and educational programs in Charlotte and surrounding areas. Founded in the Spring of 1993, CBS has steadily
grown in membership and popularity in support of this musical art form.
CBS is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization governed by a Board of Directors and is an affiliated member of The Blues Foundation the umbrella organization for a worldwide network of 165 affiliated Blues societies and has individual memberships around the globe. BLUESunday is free to CBS members and only $5.00 for non-members. The Board of Directors also meets every 1st Sunday. Meetings are open to
the membership.
Members receive a monthly newsletter and free admission to monthly meeting entertainment (unless otherwise posted). In addition, members receive discounts and co-sponsored or CBS-advertised events. Annual dues (12-month period) are $20~ Individual, $35 ~ Family, and $75 ~ Sponsor Membership. Corporate sponsorships and individual
contributions are welcome and are tax deductible (excluding dues).
The CBS Bluesletter is published monthly and distributed to approximately 600 readers. It includes information on Society activities, a
local blues calendar, and a variety of blues-related items of interest.
CBS is proud to call The Double Door Inn home. The Double Door Inn, winner of the 1994 Keeping the Blues Alive award from The Blues Foundation, is located at 1218 Charlottetowne Ave., Charlotte, NC (704-376-1446) Over the past 35 years, the DDI’s stage lights have shined on Willie Dixon, Koko Taylor, Lil’ Ed & the Blues Imperials, Marcia Ball, Saffire ~ The Uppity Blues Women, Lonnie Brooks, Eddy ―the Chief‖ Clearwater, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Luther Allison, just to name a few. (And that doesn’t even include the countless local and regional performers who otherwise would not have had a stage to stand on.) Thank you, Double Door, for all your support for live blues, zydeco, reggae, Americana, and most of all, your support of the Charlotte Blues Society!
