Bill Miller Band
With fiery lead guitar, smoldering vocals, wailing harmonica
and tight driving bass and drums, the 4-piece Bill Miller Band
gets everyone moving to their high-powered, contemporary
interpretation of vintage blues.
Bill Miller Jr. blows harp and shares vocals with Bill III.
Heavily influenced by Albert King, Bill III took up the guitar in
1997 and first jammed on the Double Door stage later that
year. They've been exciting Charlotte area audiences with
their high energy blues/rock ever since.
Their sound has been referred to as an amalgam of Chicago
blues and Southern rock with influences from Stevie Ray Vaughan
and Eric Clapton.

STEADY AS SHE GOES (RED HOUSE RECORDS) "We were rock stars for a while. And that's not a bad thing." Jefferson Airplane founding member Jorma Kaukonen reminisces with Don Wilcock about psychedelic San Francisco in the 1960s and how his interest in both traditional folk music and electric distortion led to "Steady As She Goes," Hot Tuna's first new LP in 20 years. Read the interview in Blues Revue (www.bluesrevue.com)
Hot Tuna— an American blues-rock band formed by bassist Jack Casady and guitarist Jorma Kaukonen as a spin-off of Jefferson Airplane during the time when Grace Slick was having throat surgery. In the fall of 1969, Jefferson Airplane resumed their shows, and Hot Tuna performed as an opening act with a combination of both electric and acoustic sets, giving Kaukonen and Casady an opportunity to explore their love of traditional blues music, and also giving other Hot Tuna members a chance to explore soul-rock compositions. By late 1970, Hot Tuna became an independent band playing primarily a bluesy, acoustic style. A few years later they morphed into a heavy rock band. The band broke up in 1979, then held a reunion tour in 1983. They’ve played ever since, back and forth between acoustic and electric styles, with occasional new members.

JANIVA MAGNESS ~ JUNE 2 ~ THE EVENING MUSE
Janiva Magness will be in Charlotte performing songs from her latest Alligator Records release, The Devil Is An Angel Too – a hard-hitting collection of material that explores the depths of good and evil, with Magness' glorious, soul-baring vocals burning their way through. Prior to her extraordinary 2008 Alligator Records debut, What Love Will Do, Magness released seven albums on various labels.
A charismatic artist known for her electrifying live shows, Magness was recently nominated for four 2011 Blues Music Awards: B.B. King Entertainer of the Year; Album of the Year (The Devil Is An Angel Too); Contemporary Blues Female Artist of the Year and Contemporary Blues Album of the Year (The Devil Is An Angel Too). She won the coveted 2009 Blues Music Awards for B.B. King Entertainer of the Year (she is only the second woman to ever win this award, Koko Taylor being the first) and for Contemporary Blues Female Artist of the Year, an honor she also received in 2006 and 2007.
"We need real music now more than ever because it gives us strength to pull through tough times," says Magness. "We need it in a real bad way. Blues is a ray of hope. It articulates what's lacking in people's lives." With The Devil Is An Angel Too and her explosive live shows hitting cities across North America and Europe, Magness continues to spread her empowering message of hope through music.
Janiva Magness is a National Spokesperson for Casey Family Programs (her fourth consecutive year) and an Ambassador for Foster Care Alumni of America, promoting National Foster Care Month. "Our fate doesn't have to be our destiny," she says. "I'm living proof of that. And I'm so very grateful." Her deeply emotional music, sung with passion, conviction and soul, and her telepathic ability to connect with an audience, assure her place among the blues elite.

CD Review Art Bell: Roof Top Parker By Michael ―Wolf‖ Ingmire For this reviewer, the vocals and guitar work of Charlotte based musician Art Bell channels effectively the best aspects of the work of singer-
songwriter J.J. Cale. J.J. Cale, composer of ―After Midnight and Cocaine,‖ has been one of Eric Clapton’s greatest influences. There is a
smoky, subtle quality to Bell’s vocals that recall Cale and a guitar style that
echoes some of the best work of Clapton, SRV and Hendrix.
Of the 15 tracks on Bell’s ―Roof Top Parker,‖ 9 were written or co-written by Art Bell. Bell’s songs are well crafted and well played. Even more
impressive is the fact that with the exception of Bob Enos on drums, all of the instruments featured on ―Roof Top Parker‖ are played by Art Bell. The lyrics of the songs are witty, especially on ―Facebook Fix,‖ which
states ―It doesn’t cost me a bit, won’t you give me a click,‖ and effectively serve the theme and thrust of Bell’s
songs. The covers are part of the songbook covered by many Blues and R&B musicians and include such tried and true standards such as Little Willie John’s ―Fever‖ and Bobby ―Blue‖ Bland’s ―Further On Up the
Road.‖ However, Bell approaches these warhorses with a panache that is uniquely his own. The only criticism that I have is that some of the tracks feature a synthesizer taking the place of more traditional keyboard and
horn sounds. I personally would have liked to have heard acoustic piano, organ, or actual horns on some of the
tracks as opposed to the synthesizer sounds. That aside this is a worthwhile album and one that continues to grow on me with repeated listening.
This was a self produced CD. For more on Art and his music check him out at www.reverbnation.com/artbell
SHAKE ‘EM ON DOWN: RORY BLOCK A TRIBUTE TO MISSISSIPPI
FRED McDOWELL (Stony Plain Records) What’s not to like about Rory Block? She plays a mean guitar, has a voice well suited to the blues, and brings her songs to life. Add beauty and brains and you have the perfect blues woman. She embraced the Delta blues, thanks to meeting and learning from such masters as the Reverend Gary Davis, Son House, and Mississippi John Hurt. But she also developed her own unique style that has become a musical force of her own.” (NY Times) Her latest release, Shake ‘Em On Down: A Tribute To Mississippi Fred McDowell, is part of her Mentor Series project. Block must have been channeling Mississippi Fred McDowell
when she recorded the CD. If you are looking for relevance, then listen to “The Breadline,” a reminder that hard times in the 21st century are just as hard on working families now as they were in the 1930s. Rory Block does a great service to the modern-day blues lover and Mississippi Fred at the same time. For those who are not familiar with the works of Mr. McDowell, you are in for a treat.

TOO SLIM AND THE TAIL DRAGGERS SHIVER (Northwest Music)
Too Slim and the Taildraggers’ new release Shiver is the 10th studio album from this group from Seattle who celebrate their 25th year of touring worldwide. Their last two releases, Free Your Mind and The Fortune Teller, charted on the Billboard Top Blues Chart a total of 17 times reaching as high as #5 and #9 respectively.
Shiver features some amazing guest performances by BMA award winner Curtis Salgado, Duffy Bishop and the Texas Horns. The band has sold approximately 100,000 albums since their debut release in 1988. Too Slim and the Taildraggers have won over 30 Northwest Music Awards

These Ladies Sing the Blues (And Pretty Damn Well Too) Review by Michael ―Wolf‖ Ingmire
When you say Blues to the average listener than the image is conjured up of the sweaty man (with the optional hat) playing passionate Blues guitar into the night air. Well, that is one option. But to be historically accurate, the first Blues recording, ―Crazy Blues‖ was recorded by Mamie Smith in 1928. ―Crazy Blues,‖ actually sold over a million copies and paved the way for the continued recording of the Blues for the world audience. For your consideration are two distinct singers who put their own spin on the Blues and who continue to honor the tradition originally established by Mamie Smith. First up is Jackie Scott and The Housewreckers and her CD which poses the eternal question to all who respect and cherish women: ―How Much Woman Can You Stand?‖ First of all, Jackie Scott is, to use standard street parlance, my home girl from the Hampton roads area of Virginia. She was originally the singer for The Black Rose Blues Band which was lead by one of my old guitar students, Little Jimmy Silvia. One of the reasons I like this CD is that all of the material is written or co-written by Jackie. Some of the best tracks include, the title track, ―Keep Your Legs Crossed, and Mr Devil.‖ Jackie Scott is a world class singer and is deserving of an even wider level of recognition. The Housewreckers are a crackerjack band and there are some sterling guest musicians on ―How Much Woman Can You Stand?‖ such as Williamsburg, Virginia harmonica whiz Bob Albergotti. For more information about Jackie check out her website at www.jackiescottandthehousewreckers.com
Betty Pride, is another world class singer and is based in Charlotte, NC. Her album ―Cold Hearted Woman,‖ is composed mainly of covers such as Bobby ―Blue‖ Bland’s ―Share Your Love With Me‖ and Little Willie John’s ―Fever.‖ But the arrangements, musicianship, and outstanding vocals by Miss Pride elevate this album to classic status. The stand out cuts for me are the originals which include the title track and the King Curtis-like track ―Run Away With Me.‖ Another standout track is her duet with the late Nappy Brown on the R&B classic ―Stand By Me.‖ When I need to be uplifted both of these albums find their way to my CD player. I am proud to know both of these ladies and both of these CD’s come with a hearty recommendation from the Wolf’s den.

ROBIN ROGERS WINS BLUES MUSIC AWARD!
Named "Contemporary Blues Female" of the Year
Robin Rogers was posthumously awarded the "Contemporary Blues Female" Blues Music
Award on May 5 in Memphis. Tony Rogers, her husband and musical partner, graciously
accepted the award, given by the Blues Foundation, in an eloquent speech at the annual awards show. He poignantly related that Robin learned of her BMA nomination on Decem-
ber 15, and that on the 16thshe made him promise to go to Memphis to pick up her award. She passed away the following day, December 17th, succumbing to liver cancer at
age 55.
It was the second BMA nomination for the beloved singer and harmonica player, who said
in an interview on National Public Radio shortly before her death that she felt "blessed."
Before the award was announced, Tony
joined singer Janiva Magness onstage for
a tribute to Robin. They performed one of Robin's compositions, "The Plan," a track from her Back In The Fire album, which debuted at #3 on the Billboard Blues chart three months before her death.
After the awards show Tony said, "It is fabulous that Robin continues to touch people even after she is gone. A lot of folks have asked how I was
able to keep it together playing and accepting Robin's award. I've been through a lot tougher things than that and I wanted to celebrate Robin's
life and honor her in the way that she would want me to - by playing
music and having a good time doing it. As Jim Brock (Robin's producer) said to me the next day, 'We can put her to rest now.'"

A Tribute to Robin Rogers, the person and her voice What was most special about Robin wasn’t her incredible singing voice — it was the way she loved people and how she treated each and every one of them. To meet Robin Rogers was to love her; you couldn’t walk away from an encounter with her — no matter if it was 30 seconds or 30 minutes — and not have a smile on your face.
Even as she was becoming a bona fide star, she took time to talk to every one of her fans. Because she had been through the hard times, she truly appreciated the fans that were helping to bring her success.

JUNE 2011 ________________ 9
Dear Robin,
It wasn’t until I was sitting there at the Blues Music Awards with two tables full of your
family and friends that it hit me: you really have departed Planet Earth. Sitting next to your devoted husband Tony and looking at the ―Remembering Robin Rogers‖ tribute in
the BMA program, my heart finally caught on to what my head had known for some time. You had shuffled off this mortal coil for the juke joint in the sky. It had only been
abstract theory for me to that point, but Tony at the BMAs without you? Irrefutable proof that you were gone.
Your friends were smart to bring a box of tissues; let me tell you we had plenty of need for them. You know, Robin, how every year there is a moving video montage of the blues brethren who left us in the past year? It
really knocked us for a loop when this year’s RIP presentation, lovingly crafted by Mako Funasaka, started with a video of you which Tony had never seen. And the soundtrack used throughout the montage was your song
―Moan.‖ Did you have a hand in that, Angel Robin? You brought us together to celebrate your life one more time.
Tony had a trick up his sleeve, too. After making up a lame excuse for
carrying his guitar around, he surprised us when he joined Janiva Magness on stage as she performed your magnificent number ―The Plan‖
in your honor. Then came the moment we’d been anticipating all these months: the BMA for Best Contemporary Female Artist. You had stellar
competition in Janiva Magness, Candye Kane, Karen Lovely, and
Shemekia Copeland, but it was your name called as the winner.
You would have been so proud of how Tony held it together long enough to deliver a lovely acceptance speech on your behalf and even
remembered to thank the other nominees for encouraging their fans to
vote for you. Your generous nature has inspired us all, Dear Robin.
Now Tony can finally get your headstone engraved with the title you earned with your years of hard work: ―BMA Winner.‖ The best title I ever received was when you called me your friend.
Love, Stacy
